4% TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
2% INW Biscuit
1% FA Caramel
1% FA Nut Mix
0.75% TFA Horehound
0.5% FA Lime Tahity Distilled
0.5% TFA Koolada
The Journey: Ever since tasting Quey by 2OHM6 Vapor I've had an itch to recreate something close to it. It's such a unique and satisfying flavor. I had some attempts a while ago and it wasn't really coming close but recently revisited it and found a mix that works rather well. Quey is described as "a vanilla ice cream cone swirled with caramel, lime zest, herbs and nuts". It's an interesting combo that works really well. I started out with trying to make this recipe more complex than necessary and ended up making some simplifications that ended up working out well.
Base: Vanilla Ice Cream/Ice Cream Cone
I thought I'd be fancy and tried to make my own vanilla ice cream and cone with Vienna Cream, Vanilla Swirl, and Cheesecake Graham Crust. It was ok, but the flavor was too heavy on vanilla and the cheesecake graham crust wasn't coming across as that cheap ice cream cone flavor that I know and love. I decided to simplify and use TFA VBIC and INW Biscuit which worked wonders. (I had tried CAP Sugar Cookie for the cone, but found INW Biscuit to be better).
Mid-Layer: Caramel and Nuts
I don't actually have a ton of experience with caramel since I'm not typically a fan, but I used FA Caramel in this recipe which seems to work just fine. The nuts part was more of a guess and experimentation. Quey has a walnut type nut taste to me so I tried FA Nut Mix and it seems to fit in the recipe nicely with a walnut and pecan type flavor, although I'm tempted to sub in some pistachio on occasion.
Top Notes: Lime, Herbs, Cool
The lime in Quey has a zesty, clean, and bright flavor but is not overwhelming. I thought FA Tahity Lime Distilled at low % would fit the bill and it does exactly that. Now for the secret sauce...the herbs! I get a slightly licorice flavor in Quey and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out what it was. I tried anise and I tried Black Touch (licorice). Niether of these worked. I was reading through reviews of Quey and someone mentioned Horehound, which I had never heard of. I decided to buy a tiny bottle of TFA Horehound and low and behold - this is the flavor I was missing. It tastes like a less potent licorice and mint flavor. It's a weird one, but it works wonders in this recipe. Lastly, there's a cooling, non-menthol aspect to Quey that I can only describe as Koolada.
This was a fun recipe that caused me some grief early on, but I think I ended up in a place that is pretty close to the original. Hope you give it a mix!
Horehound is a great flavor to have around. It pairs well with RY4Double (i mean, what doesnt?) and HS ginger. Makes for a nice ry4 mix. Not quite spicy, not quite floral, not quite mint. horehound and ginger have been used with toffees and caramels since the late 1800 in candies and its a flavor profile i really like these days
