FA Perique Black
submitted over 8 years ago by PerennialPhilosopher

Setup: Goon LP, dual SS316L fused claptons 26/34 @.13 ohms, 80w power, 420F temp limit, full cotton wicks.

Testing: FA Perique Black @3%, 70/30, steeped for one month

Flavor Description: Are candied Bell Peppers a thing? that's the most noticable thing about this flavor right away. it isnt very strong, and considering how gross it sounds, its actually not unpleasant at all. it reminds me mostly of smoking a cigar, the way that the spice kinda builds up if you puff away at it. There is an earthiness here that is rather subtle. i was really hoping for something similar to American Spirit Black cigarettes (my old cigs) but this needs a ton of help to get there...

Off-flavors: sweet bell pepper...

Throat hit: not very harsh, but not perfectly smooth either

Uses and Pairings: the only things i can think of are 1. small amounts to bring some realism to your cigar recipe and 2. that candied pepper recipe you always wanted to try, but were too afraid to attempt. i would suggest starting at .5-1% in a mix with other tobaccos and try it solo first to see what you get out of it.

Second opinions found here: opinions range all over the place from analog cig to "just chemicals"

Edit: added a little description to the flavor description.

I'm using it at around 0.5% in Tobacco mixes and i get some ashyness from it, you don't seem to get it at all, right?

And i was tasting pepper in some mixes and blamed my nicotine, i'm gonna check to see if it isn't just steeped Perique, thank you!

The ashiness you get might be that flavor I'm describing as "slight earthiness" and the pepper is almost certainly coming from this flavor.

Well at least it hits you with something edible (the bell pepper). Below 0.5% I get some weird earthy sweet ash, above that the only thing I can compare this to is inhaling hot asphalt with sugar syrup. I'm not a fan of FA tobaccos (except SOHO which is not strictly tobacco) but this flavor.... ugh!

Yeah it seems like everyone tastes something different in the reviews I read.

I get distinct "charred green pepper" from a few tobacco flavors, so candied bell pepper seems within the range of possibility here.

Yeah it's the strangest thing. It's not even unpleasant really. I didn't change my Cotton after testing this morning so all day I've been vaping JF forest mix with a hint of pepper

My wife was digging trough my mixing box tonight and found this one. WTH is "Perique black?" she says, and opens the bottle to take a whiff. "Hm, smells like tobacco." "Oh?" says I. "Green Bell pepper" I said. "Try it again" her: <waft> "WTF HOLY CRAP YUCK!!"

Haha! That's hilarious. My gf just guessed raisins and then I told her. She just said wow
