First, let's get the recipe out of the way so we can get to the good parts.
RY4N Reynolds
INW 555 Gold- 1.5%
Acetyl Pyrazine- 1%
LA Butter Rum- .25%
FA Caramel- 1%
TFA Coconut Extra- .25%
TFA DX Brown Sugar- 1%
Vanillin- 2%
TFA Maple Syrup- 2%
SC Turkish Tobacco- 4%
TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream- 1.5%
On ELR
Edit: forgot to mention steep time! Give it 2 weeks. It'll be good after a week, but better after 2. The Butter Rum needs time to settle down, and the Maple Syrup has a bit of an after taste if you get at it too soon.
On to the notes!
The RY4 Base (Wall of text)
This all started about a month ago when I decided I wanted to make an RY4 mix. I knew that TFA RY4 Double didn't actually have any tobacco in it, so I looked up what was in it. Luckily, the TPA website has all the flavor molecules listed. Ethyl Maltol (sweetener), Cyclotene (maple, caramel, bready, nutty nuances), and Vanillin (take a guess.) So I figured I'd try to hit all of those aspects, and then add a Tobacco to the mix. Why not just use RY4 Double with another tobacco? Short, that's not very fun. Little longer, I really wanted to make it a bold flavor. So instead of one flavor molecule making up the maple, nutty, caramel note, I wanted to hit each of those individually with their own flavor that has more molecules backing up those notes. I wanted to strum the fuckin' guitar, not just hit a note once. So for sweetness, I picked TFA DX Brown Sugar. Mostly because it's the closest thing I have to a sweetener. I don't really use them much. For maple, I went TFA Maple Syrup because I actually had that on hand because I read somewhere that as a single flavor it could pass as Red Man chewing tobacco. I was curious, so I got it. Caramel, FA Caramel because I read good things. Earlier goes at getting this RY4 base down, I used INW Caramel, but there just wasn't much flavor to it. FA Caramel is a stronger flavor in my opinion. Vanillin, I just used Vanillin and boosted the vanilla note with TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream just to give the juice a rich, creamy feel. For the nutty aspect, I of course went with Acetyl Pyrazine. Since I got that I think I've put it in just about everything. It's just a really nice thing to have in the background in just about everything I mix.
The Tobaccos
The INW 555 Gold is mostly there to buddy up with the AP. It's a smooth and nutty tobacco flavor. When I first got it, I thought it smelled like wet dog, and I never used it. Then I decided to throw it in a mix, and it is delicious. The SC Turkish Tobacco has quickly become my Tobacco of choice if I am shooting for a savory, dessert type of tobacco. It's somewhat creamy and sweet. Not really any ash or noticeable tobacco leaf taste. I might even be so bold to say it could probably be used in non-tobacco mixes and you wouldn't even notice, but I don't really have much experience with non-tobaccos, so I won't be that bold today. In my review of INW Turkish someone said that they thought it was close enough to sub in a mix, but I prefer the SC.
The Unexpected Star
LA Butter Rum. By golly, what a strong flavor. At .25%, it is still right up front. I originally added it at such a low percent because I wanted it to work side by side with the Coconut Extra in providing a little texture. In an earlier iteration, I had the Coconut Extra a bit stronger, and I could really taste it. I didn't want to taste it here. I wanted to feel it more than anything. Maybe a slight little tickle on the tongue and a creamy feeling going down the throat. So I dropped the Coconut down, and that made way for the Butter Rum to take its place as the heir to the throne. If you shake and vape this, it's going to taste like rum. If you let it sit for a few days, the rum flavor dies down a little, and you have this nice, rich butter flavor with a hint of rum sitting up front. It wasn't necessarily what I was aiming for, but it sure is delicious. Also kills the coils. So just be warned of that.
Could you sub the Maple Syrup, Vanillin, Brown Sugar, and Caramel with RY4 Double? I suppose you could give it a shot. I haven't tried it personally, but I'd probably suggest trying it somewhere in the 4%-5% range.
And a little bonus recipe because this one didn't really do what I set out to do- boost the tobacco note in an RY4 mix. This one uses the same RY4 base, but has a much more prominent smoky Pipe Tobacco.
RY4N Gosling
Acetyl Pyrazine- 1%
TFA DX Brown Sugar- 1%
FA Caramel- 1%
Vanillin- 2%
TFA Maple Syrup- 1.5%
TFA Kentucky Bourbon- .3%
INW Dark for Pipe- 1.5%
Amazing names, Like big ups I wanna make this because of the name alone.
Haha I'm working on a whole RY4N line. Meg RY4N and RY4N Started the Fire coming soon.
Love everything about this except not having the flavors to make it and not being much of a tobacco fan. Sexy name, sexy recipe, sexy notes, sexy creator (probably). Just plain sexy.
I think that the tobacco fan part isn't really a requirement for this one. It almost has a buttery chocolate quality to it. I don't necessarily mean it tastes like chocolate, but it's kind of rich a creamy like chocolate. It's definitely in the dessert tobacco arena.
I've got another pretty good one that I'd like to post, but I'm guessing there's not going to be a whole lot of people that have a key ingredient. Hoping the BCF guy has some luck with being able to stock some because right now I can only find it at Wizard Labs.
Key ingredient that you can only find at WL? The suspense is killing me!
INW Fortuna Strike. I reviewed it a while back. It's almost like a prune syrup with a little bit of smokiness. Alone, it's yummy. In a mix, it's fantastic. It blends so well. It's thick and has a dark sweetness. It's one of those things that doesn't really stand out too much, but it just wouldn't be the same without it.
