Thank you to everyone who joined in last week's Flavor of The Week, Berry Blends.
As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
This week's flavor is: Pineapple
Past FOTW posts can be found here
Prepare yourselves, next week's FOTW will be: Blackberry
The week after that will be: Cucumber
The week after that will be: Peanut Butter
The week after that will be: Coffee
The week after that will be: Donut (thanks /u/king_cheefer_420)
The week after that will be: ??? You tell me. Please take this opportunity to suggest one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that). Otherwise I'm going to pick something like passionfruit or papaya just because I feel like doing Ps. Edit: More P's from /u/tranceinate: Pistachio, pandoro, panetonne, pumpkin, pasta, paprika, parfait, pastry, pesto, pickle, potato, praline, pretzel, pulled pork, pizza, pancake, pie, pie crust, pie filling, peppers, plantain, pudding.
If I'm going to contribute anything to Pineapple, it's just to never, ever, ever order FA Pineapple. It tastes like what I would imagine dragster tires doing a burnout in dog shit would taste like. FA should really do everyone a service and just pull it.
What the fuck, FlavourArt?
FA Pineapple is the juiciest most complete pineapple ever.
- 6% FA Pineapple
- 9% TFA Cheesecake
- 3% TFA Honey
If you mix this up, be sure to send some to /u/ID10-T
Edit: /s
I love the way /u/loco_mojo used Pineapple in [Somnambulist] (https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/20999#somnambulist_by_locomojo) it seems to play around in the background while changing the familiar flavor of the other ingredients. It's subtle yet vital to the recipe.
And of course there's /u/ID10-T's fantastic Pina Colada where the pineapple is much more in your face.
I've had some pretty delicious results subbing FLV Pineapple at half the % of INW. I find it to be a lot juicier but a little less "well rounded"
I love all your recipes! Ordering now! /s
I worked on that one for 10 years ;)
Is that your durian recipe?
Absolutely. Putridly delicious.
I probably should have put an /s somewhere in there.
As someone who loves durian, is it actually made to resemble durian or do you just call it that because it tastes bad (considering it contains some of what this sub considers the worst flavors)?
And if it is made to be a durian recipe, is it made to be what durian smells or taste like? Durian smells awful, but when you taste it it's a wonderful crazy complexity. According to me. :P
For a natural tasting, juicy pineapple I have been enjoying a combination of INW Pineapple with CAP Golden Pineapple. I am most proud of my usage of this combination here:
Detox
LA Banana Cream - 2.5%
FA Banana - 1.5%
INW Cactus - 1%
INW Pineapple - 2.5%
CAP Golden Pineapple - 0.75%
TFA Orange Cream - 1%
FA Pear - 1%
I learned about INW Pineapple from /u/ID10-T because I just HAD to mix up this piña colada recipe.
Looks delicious, any chance subbing LA bc with TPA bc would work?
LA will give you a lot brighter banana flavor and tfa has the better creaminess in my opinion with a mild banana flavor. could definitely change the recipe but could still be very good
That Detox is so good! I get flavor ADHD so I almost never make more than 30ml of anything but Detox is one that I'd like to have 120ml of for when I get tired of everything else and just need to detox.
I worked on that piña colada recipe off and on from April 2015, when I got my first five flavors which included TFA Pineapple and TFA Coconut, until June 2016. I'd still be working on it if I hadn't found INW Pineapple. It's unfortunate that you have to pay the same INW price without getting the usual INW strength on that one, but worth it to me to have a pineapple flavor that tastes like pineapple juice and not tinny canned pineapple tidbits or a pineapple lollipop dipped in battery acid.
HS Pineapple is bomb.
Pineapple Cheesecake
HS Pineapple 2%
Cap Golden Pineapple 1%
TFA Dragonfruit .75%
Cap NY Cheesecake 4.75%
TFA Cheesecake Graham 2.5%
FW Graham Cracker 2%
FW Whipped Cream 1%
Dragonfruit really helps out pineapple
I want a pineapple that tastes like a fresh and perfectly ripe chunk of the fruit. Can HS Pineapple help make this happen?
INW Pineapple and CAP Golden Pineapple together can do that, with INW as the main flavor and just a little CAP Golden to make it more chunky and less juicy.
But HS might be able to do it better; I don't even know why I haven't tried that one yet, everyone has such nice things to say about it.
INW Pineapple: more of a fresh pineapple juice, weaker than most INW stuff imo, best around 7-10% solo or at 4-5% with some CAP Golden Pineapple (1-3%).
CAP Golden Pineapple: more tart and it's got more depth to it, also very sweet. This one is tangy and above 4 or 5% too much bite for me. Like /u/wh1skeyk1ng said it's like a canned pineapple. Great paired with INW Pineapple, I hear it's good with hangsen pineapple also.
If been told that, for cheapskates or people who just don't like feeling ripped off by paying the usual price for such an unusually weak concentrate from INW, FW Pineapple Natural is a pretty good sub. Ever tried that one?
I haven't but I will check it out. It's funny because I've seen reviews for INW Pineapple that say 1-3% is fine. At 3% it's noticable but it's like having Pineapple water.
Except it my Mango Colada recipe. I haven't done the experimenting that would be needed to try figure out what the heck is actually going on in there, but the combination of other ingredients is somehow amplifying the pineapple. I started at 5% INW Pineapple in that one and just kept walking it down in version after version because it was way, way too pineapple-forward. In utter disbelief each time that it was still so pineapply. I was dumbfounded to find that 2% INW + 0.75% CAP Golden somehow turned out to be plenty of pineapple in there, but it really is.
Anyone have experience with Lorann Pineapple? It's one of my favorite flavors, but I haven't tried any other options.
Anybody got the flavor bible? I would love a readout of all the things that can go with Pineapple.
Not from flavor bible but:
Caramel
Cilantro
Basil
Mango
Banana
Passionfruit
Orange
Grapefruit
Apple
Pear
Peach
Strawberry
Dragonfruit
Melons
Rum
Some Beers
Butterscotch
Butter
Black tea
Chocolate
Coffee
Some nuts
Lots of other stuff you wouldnt vape and stuff I forgot to mention
Edit: forgot coconut
Oh....my.....god...........
So each "Flavor" has a set of "Pairings" which is just a list of other "Flavor"'s right? stay with me here
What if you automatically looked through that list of Pairings making a larger list of flavors, building a large list of all the accumulated flavors. Then any that popped up each time will fit a profile.
I'm excited..... this is good stuff.
INW pineapple: Not as potent as most of their stuff, but a great tasting and realistic pineapple. The only thing that some might think that it's lacking is a bit of sourness, but I much prefer it this way. Great at 5%, moderate throat hit. Like a lot of INW stuff, I feel that this flavor should be the centerpiece and not used to backup other flavors due to it's complexity and "fullness" if that word makes sense.
TPA pineapple: Slightly more throat hit, less sweat and more sourness. Not a big fan of this one as a stand alone vape, but there are some great recipes that utilize it to it's best potential.
TFA Pineapple is tricky. The flavor is great but it's very potent and should probably never be used above 1.5%. I'm terrified to see some recipes calling for 5% when even at 2% all I get is straight up vomit from it, for others it's battery acid. Use sparingly.
Fuck yasssss
Pineapple fan?
Very much so. My favorite ejuice by far is pineapple custard. I have probably 6 revisions but I'm not satisfied with one yet. I'd love to see what the community can come up with
So /u/StardustCoyote and I initially made this recipe to submit to that ATF contest that went down a couple months ago (the one with the multiple levels where each recipe had to use certain flavors from a given list, etc). But for whatever reason we didn't submit it, probably because I knew I would be way too busy over the holidays to work on contest entries if we happened to advance.
We looked up a bunch of pineapple (food) recipes online to see if anything interesting jumped out at us for inspiration, and she found a recipe for pineapple/strawberry salsa served atop cinnamon-sugar dusted tortilla chips. Of course we HAD to try this. No name for this recipe, will gladly accept any suggestions :p
TFA Ripe Strawberry 2%
CAP Cinn Danish Swirl 1.5%
CAP Golden Pineapple 1.5%
CAP Cereal 27 1%
FA Fuji 0.5%
FA Joy 0.5%
Normally with our pineapple recipes we tend to go for a mix of CAP Golden, HS and TFA, but if I remember correctly the contest restraints limited the first round to 6 ingredients and HS wasn't eligible for use. TFA by itself as a main pineapple note is kinda underwhelming, so we went for our happy medium of CAP. Cereal 27 with the little touch of Joy made a great crispy fried flour tortilla and the CDS brings the cinnamon-sugar dusting to the top. The Fuji is there to add a little bit of extra sweetness to the salsa and also because it was a required ingredient for that round :v You could probably leave it out and it wouldn't affect it too terribly much, I'd imagine. (Edit: After seeing /u/deejaymillsnyc's post upthread the Fuji could likely be subbed for TFA Dragonfruit and I am going to attempt this later.)
This works pretty well as a shake-and-vape but after a few days you really start to see the layering of the fruit and the chips. I can't speak to anything longer than two weeks because like everything else I make I don't have the impulse control to wait that long.
That sounds almost like a pineapple foster, or like brown sugar and cinnamon glazed pineapple, grilled.
Did you try the actual food recipe? I really really want to.
What's your usually ratio for CAP, HS, and TFA pineapples used together?
I have not, mostly because I am a defective human and don't eat fruit. (Long story short, extremely sensitive to weird textures and most fruit tastes bitter to me). I'll try to find the recipe for you though!
Looking at our two pineapple-forward recipes, we tend to go equal ratios with CAP and HS and half that of TFA. TFA is pretty much there to fill in some extra background notes.
I think this was the recipe we based it off of: http://www.bakedbyrachel.com/strawberry-pineapple-fruit-salsa-with-cinnamon-tortilla-chips/
I mixed this just now, I'll drop some feedback in a week.
have you uploaded this to ATF or anywhere i could also rate/comment?
Question. I have TFA Juicy Pineapple. Is this different from the dreaded TFA Pineapple?
I found it( TFA Juicy Pineapple) to be fairly mild and smooth, but still tasty in a 3% single flavour test. I did a sidebar search and couldn't find the answer. And I agree on the FA pineapple being total garbage.
Definitely different.
Word has it Hangsen Pineapple is the greatest pineapple.
Am I the only one that gets sweaty socks from Hangsen Pineapple? I mixed it at 1% to test and the bottle smells like sweaty socks and tastes like it too. Was really disappointed since everyone has said a lot of good things but maybe its just one of those flavorings that doesn't sit right with me.
How about the Donut flavor for after coffee? Might be able to pull them together :)
Concerning TFA pineapple
I have seen where opinions vary with this flavor. Some have had luck with it, others like myself, have not. I wanted to understand why or what was causing some to have the flavor cause the juice to become cloudy and have a terrible after taste, but others reported no such thing. So, I called TFA and find out. Here is what I was told.
TFA pineapple does not mix well with VG, which results in the cloudiness. This would explain why some have had theirs cloud up and others haven't.
As for the terrible taste, the TFA pineapple basically has an attitude, various components can cause the flavor compound to separate. This factor, along with the insolubility in VG leads to the terrible taste, you are tasting the molecules that comprise the flavor of pineapple separately rather than as a compound. When using the TFA pineapple it should be approached the same as with making a heavy cream and butter sauce. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, so I'm not quite sure what the magic method is.
I would assume this could explain why people have had similar experiences with other flavors that I have seen with Pineapple, but I didn't ask.
Also, when I spoke with Linda from TFA she told me that they taste all of the flavors with a spoon of whipped cream to get a feel of what the flavor profile is. I don't know how the flavor profile will translate from whipped cream to vape because I have never eaten any flavors before. I just thought it was an interesting bit of information that I would share. It could save time and supplies for someone.
That is very interesting, thank you!
Thanks, you're welcome. I kind of am second guessing myself putting it where I did instead of making its own place. I'm not sure if it will be found by someone who is having similar issues with a different flavor. She did tell me it happens with more than just the pineapple.
My first recipe post:
This is Everlong. It's a clone of my favorite juice named for my favorite song.
Cap Golden Pineapple 4% LA Raspberry 3% TFA Key Lime 2% Koolada (optional, but the original recipe included it) to taste. The original was cold, but not menthol heavy. I took the percentage down because I may have an overly diluted batch of koolada and I don't want someone to ruin a batch based on bad numbers.
It's supposed to be a clone of Pink Spot. It's fairly close, but I'm still working on it. I've tried a different pineapple (LA I think), with Harvest Berry, and with various amounts of Koolada. This is as close as I've been able to get it. If you like fruity flavors, give this a shot. It's the flavor that kept me from going back to cigs, and I think it's worthy to share.
I recommend letting it sit for a few days so the lime can relax. It can be a shake and vape, but the sooner you vape it, the more kick the lime has. The original had a little bit of koolada to it, other folks seem to like it without.
Is that supposed to be 0.75% Koolada?
I'm using it at 7.5%.
I really like menthol, some people really don't. It could be used at a lower percent as an accent, I'm sure, but I haven't perfected that yet.
Thanks for the clarification. And that's TFA Koolada? If so, I think something might be wrong with your Koolada, like it got over-diluted somehow. Some people are more sensitive to it than others and I see it used in the 1 to 2% range at times, although I prefer to keep it below 0.75%. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone using it at 7.5%... it seems like it might be physically painful to do that.
A pineapple-raspberry-key lime combo sounds delicious though.
