Is this PG vapable? Bought 500 ml for about 10 USD
submitted over 8 years ago by zoorakhan

Is there any way to tell if a bottle of PG is vapable if grade isn't mentioned ?

M= 76.09 g/mol 1l=1.04 kg

Specification Assay(C3H8O2) >=99% Density (d 20/4 degree C) Water <=0.2%

I couldn't find any PG in my country's amazon. (Amazon.com though is filled with them, what else is PG used for, or all those are vaping related?)

So I PG is usually get is from a guy who rebottles it and sells them for about half price for the bottle I bought from a lab supply shop.

I read online that usually lab grades are usually higher than food grades. So I thought to buy my own from a company whose packing I could trust than a single guy.

But the company, merek whose bottle I bought states:

"For many applications, you don’t need solvents with highest purity – you need a cost-efficient solution with reliable quality and available in high quantities. EMPLURA® is EMD Millipore’s alternative to high-purity qualities, offering adequate specs with the most important parameters

EMPLURA® grade solvents are tested mainly for preparative lab applications or for standard production processes. We check only for basic parameters that are important in the described application, i.e. for purity, identity, density, evaporation residue and water content. The minimum assay generally exceeds in most cases 99 %" Link to page

That doesn't fill me with confidence. But what freaks me out is that the PG I have been vaping since starting about 4 months ago is priced half that.

I'm gonna go with no, you definitely want pure propylene glycol. I mix juice myself and I would not use that, I understand that it's hard for you to find the proper ingredients in your country but you should really find a good source. Maybe try vendors outside of amazon? Best of luck to ya

Yeh, I guess that is fair. But hurts that it's 600 bucks down the drain. I should probably research alternate uses for PG so I don't have to literally drain it down the toilet.

Also the resellers are dodgy as hell and they sell PG priced half of product what you say is unsafe.

If that cost $600, I would hope you could at least resell it and recoup some of your investment!

Na re, 600 inr that equates to around 10 usd but due to purchasing power parity feel like more to me due to my depressed salary. (Not that I m complaining, my other expenses are similarly depressed but if you are into electronics from outside the country it's brutal)

That is PG >99% quality. That should be suitable enough for vaping. You never get 100% PG. ~~USP grade is 99+%.~~ See for example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/1000ml-1L-MPG-Pharmaceutical-grade-superb-quality-Make-minerals-water/dp/B00BXKETDA

EDIT: In the bulletin of http://www.usp.org/usp-nf/official-text/accelerated-revision-process/accelerated-revision-history/propylene-glycol is that PG USP grade needs 99.5%. That's why it doesn't have a grade. I don't know if possible 0.5% less PG are that important.

I also don't know. Also why I m not scrutinising my VG (http://www.sharrets.com/VEGETABLE-GLYCERIN---32-Oz-100---Pure-id-2525133.html) and that is why I m assuming the amazon seller's positive answer as to whether if it it's vapable is definitive. I don't have a lot of choices here.

In 3rd world countries vaping versus smoking comes down to health concerns as smoking is very cheap here and economics don't enter into the discussion at all. (3 usd for a pack of 20 good quality cigarette packs).

It almost seems safe to me .. they say over 99% purity and that it's tested for "purity" meaning I would assume impurities such as anything hazardous ..

https://www.emdmillipore.com/Web-US-Site/en_CA/-/USD/ProcessMSDS-Start?PlainSKU=MDA_CHEM-822324&Origin=PDP

That says it was tested in USA and "No hazardous ingredients according to OSHA" so it should be safe ..

That number on the top of the bottle is its "catalog" number and allows you to look it up.

It's from Malaysia. Needed it in a hurry so it would not be useful. But seems nice and hoping the shipping rates aren't as killer. Have you ordered something through international order from them, I might just use them if I could find out what vendors do they source their flavours from and testimonials to their quality because it's the first I heard of the site.

It is a PG alternative and is vapable but I do not like the "For many applications, you don't need solvents with the highest purity" and "we only check for basic parameters". My gut instinct tells me it would be completely fine and any impurities will mostly be H2O, but don't go off just my advice, hopefully someone more knowledgeable on the subject will chime in. The reason it is so expensive is because it is not naturally extracted like PG is as far as I know, some people use this as an alternative to PG because some have a sensitivity to vaping PG even at low quantities.

It is PG, not an alternative, what he wants to know is if it's safe. What your thinking of is PDO or 1,3-propanediol.

Edit: I see you already realized this, hadn't read the other comments yet.

Yeah I got it mixed up, he corrected me on my comment. Thank you! :)

I don't think it's a PG alternative, it's actully an alternative name of PG itself.

Edit: yup, as per multiple sources on the net
1,2-propanediol = PG https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/1_2-propanediol

Ahhh you are correct, I mixed the two up. 1,2-propanediol is PG and is petroleum based, what I was thinking of is 1,3-propanediol which is plant based and is what people are using as a PG alternative. Sounds to me like it would be totally fine.

Man maybe I should look into that. Petroleum impurities in lungs sounds so much worse than plant impurities. Also side note I dunno if golden state is actually 1 one your 50/51 usa states but I immediately thought of the Nba team of same name. Which is a good thing coz they are winning a bunch (although last year they were even more exciting)

In plain English, PG is mainly made from petroleum. The process of extracting the PG is very difficult to have impurities except of water. So your PG will be safe to use if you don't mind the water. But of course it's your decision.

Man I was ready to write it off, but if extraction yields mainly water as impurity I m torn. I was thinking since it's yielded from petroleum the impurities would be more combustible. I'll just try it out in 2 ml test batch then.

Thanks.

Can't speak to whether or not it is safe, but to answer your question PG is used in a variety of medical, food, and animal industries. I have a gallon I bought at a farm supply shop (USP, good stuff) that's used for ruminants (cows, sheep, goats). It's a quick energy source for them. We use it for when one of our stock is weak or sick.

That's good to know, I have cows back at my home (I live at two places in a month coz of work.) I probably divide the 500 ml between the three of them within a couple of days.

1-2-Propanediol is the scientific name for what's colloquially refers to as PG in vaping circles.

Please tell me I m not mistaken at such a simple fact.

Yup I m almost sure after some further googling. I bought the bottle just after reading the name off the wikipedia page so I was kinda thinking I made an elementary mistake.
