Substitution Help
submitted over 8 years ago by SlashaLO

I have a Chocolate Covered Strawberry that I personally love. Got a buddy who is scared of Acetoin and wants me to try to pull out the Caramel Original I used. I am trying to figure out a good Caramel sub. I dug through the reddit and found many conflicting things. Anyone have any suggestions?

Chocolate Covered Strawberry

  • TPA - Ripe Strawberry 9%
  • TPA - Bavarian Cream DX 4%
  • TPA - Clear Double Chocolate 3%
  • FW - Sweetener 3%
  • TPA - Caramel (Orig) 2%

I am thinking of replacing TPA Caramel with either FA Caramel or possibly WF Caramel Butter. Any suggestions to get that great caramel taste with the mouthfeel that comes with the original?

Just use the DX Caramel. I swapped it into production recipes when they released it with very little reworking.

I had this thought also. I didn't know if I needed to drop the % much or not. I've heard they take a little longer to steep, but that's not a big deal.

Try it at the same %. One recipe needed to drop 1%, one needed to go up a bit, the other 2 stayed the same. Negligible impact on cure time. [sorry, I'm pedantic about not using 'steep' in reference to e-liquids, unless you're actually steeping something in alcohol or pg.]

Feel free to use whatever words you want but, the Food (flavor) is steeping the the liquid (pg/vg mix) to extract the flavors. STEEP 1.soak (food or tea) in water or other liquid so as to extract its flavor or to soften it. The only reason i posted is because you want to be so "Pedantic" Also Cure means to preserve food stuffs, not to age for flavor.

I use FA Caramel. On it's own merit, it is a very good Caramel. It is a very convincing caramel, with medium darkness, zero bitterness, and is on the sweet side. Sadly, it has no butter or cream elements in it, so it is more like a hard caramel, or a fat free caramel sauce. Surely, not the soft gooie milky caramel sauce or chewy caramels. That being said, it's a staple in my flavor cabinet.

I would honestly throw that stuff out and wouldn't use it.

Caramel Original Ingredients: Natural & Artificial Flavor, Propylene Glycol, Water, Corn Syrup, Caramel Color

Acetoin is the least of the worry in that flavor.

I only use my caramel original in my coffee now, just to use it up.

I could see that. That doesn't bother me personally, but I can see why others could be.

Well if not for the health reasons that stuff will gunk up your coils really fast, too. Just something to keep in mind.

Oh ya. That's for sure. My p.u.c kilos my coils in a couple days haha
