So I decided to make my uncle some ejuice, he's been a smoker for over 24 years and made the switch to vaping, but recently went back because the only vape shop around which sold Butter Rum Tobacco stopped carrying it.
He gave me a little taste of what he had left, and the butter rum tastes just like the LorAnn's Butter Rum. But the difficulty has come in picking a tobacco(s) to pair it with. Ducatt Gold? RY4's? I was looking at Canadian Tobacco as well because we live in Canada and he smokes 'Canadian Classics' all the time.
I've done a lot of hunting on ELR and am yet to find any recommended pairings of tobacco and butter rum.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance!

^ this never works for me -- Not sure why...
You might have some setting for username mentions turned off? or it could be that you keep getting mentioned in groups and I forgot there's a limit to how many people you can page in one comment.
FLV Kentucky Blend @2-3% is quite nice, needing only a short steep. Based on me liking that, /u/t_mace recommened FLV (I think) Red Burley. Not sure about it's steep time. So there is 2 to start with. I sure some others will chime in....
I only just got Red Burley a week ago, 3% steeped a week so far -- I was pretty surprised by it and am pretty stoked to play with it more. I did notice the dry, earthier side leaning towards what I'm perceiving as patchouli... Is anyone else getting that? I'm lovin it! Can't wait to see what it's like at lower percentages as an accent for vanillas (yeah, I'm kinda pointin elbows at NN).
didn't get a patchouli note but I've only gone up to 1.5% with it
It's on my wishlist. I am very impressed with KB, and when tmace said Burley is similar, I knew I couldn't live without it. Now you come along, I guess I'll pull the trigger on my order a little early:)
How do you like INW DNB? I thought it might be a welcome addition since I am starting down tobacco road.
I'm not a regular user of it -- It's been a while since I've used it; Others swear by it for replicating an analogue, for me though, it has a slight warming sensation in my lungs that's kind of off-putting. Again, it's probably just me -- I'm a little more sensitive, I think, than most; having not used it regularly I'm probably just not used to it -- paper and ash definitely has it's place for the overall profile though and it does work nicely to that effect. I'd say go for it!
Thanks man, the short steep might be a selling point just so i can get something in his hands fast while I work on perfecting the recipe
My steep time on Red Burley is zero to 2 weeks depending on how impatient I'm feeling. It's pretty good right off the bat I find. Then again, I don't mind rough edges when it comes to tobacco, so take a drip right away and then try it again in a week or two to decide what's good for you.
I've played with Inawera Dark for Pipe and Black for Pipe and I'm thinking Dark may fit here. Especially if you are going the rich sweetish route that butter rum is going to take you down. I have paired it with some butterscotch and some caramels and its quite nice. Black may be a little too rich but it's worth a shot too. Black needs something bright/sharp in my opinion to break that tobacco richness up.
Canadian Classics is, from what I read in a tobacco newletter from an online distributor, 40% Canadian tobacco and Virginia; Reviews on a few other tobacco review sites say it's a pretty bland smoke. A reviewer for FW Virginia Fire Cured on ELR says at least two smokers converted to vaping on this flavor looking for a replacement Canadian tobacco blend.
Inawera and Hangsen both have Canadian Tobaccos, but I've never had either; Reviews for both say maple tobacco, so that may or may not work well with the butter rum
If I were sticking to the Butter Rum profile, I'd suggest INW Virginia Tobacco Absolute is probably your best bet for Virginia if you're gonna keep it closer to a blander style tobacco; INW Cavendish turns out a nice Virginia with a little more depth that might lend itself to the butter rum better than the one dimensional absolute. Never had the Fire Cured from FW...
As far as Butter Rum flavors, I was only able to find FlavorWest and Lorann on BCF and ECX; DIY Flavor Shack also has a Butter Rum... I've never mixed any of these butter rums, but reviews suggest LA needs help (usually butterscotch); the profile is brown sugar, an excessive amount of butter, honey, spice (allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon in equal parts) and rum. If you need an excuse for more flavors, FA has a really tasty Jamaican Rum that might replicate the spices and rum... I'd probably go with Butterscotch for support of the butter rum if you go LA, (FW Natural Butterscotch is my go to) but Medicine Flower Butterscotch is pretty decent too.
As an aside, (it's not butter rum, but is sorta in the same vein) /u/wh1skeyk1ng's Stag Night is pretty bangin; It might be heavier than what you're looking for, though and needs a solid couple weeks steep time to really shine... I subbed FW Butterscotch Natural for FLV and it was pretty divine, but utterly destroyed my build...
Finally someone tags me in this thread!
If you're looking for a pairing with Butter Rum, check out FA 7 Leaves Ultimate. It's a bit light and dusty, similar to an actual cig, and will allow the butter rum taste to show itself without over-powering. Otherwise, INW has a "for pipe" line that is definitely worth looking into. I can say Black for Pipe is pretty robust and almost too rich and smoky for my ADV liking. Dark for pipe is a bit nutty and almost malty or chocolately, and has a nice middle of the spectrum tobacco taste. Gold for pipe is a bit sweeter, as if light tobacco was accented with raisins and some sort of syrup.
As stated above, Stag Night is bangin and always in stock for me, albeit might be a bit on the sweet side for someone just getting off cigs.

oh trust me Canadian Classics are bland as cigarettes go, it'd be safe to say the taste is similar to accidentally taking a swig from somebody's chew cup! I'll take a look at the flavor profiles on the INW Virginia Tobacco, thanks for the suggestion!
INW Virginia tobacco absolute is pretty bland all by itself -- It's more of a mixer which is the direction I was heading but failed to complete my thought. If you want a tobacco note to stand out from the butter rum while remaining a little more true to what he's been smoking, you'll probably want something like INW Cavendish -- it has a little more character and depth to it, while still remaining a pretty tasty Virginia. You could probably pair the Virginia Absolute with Dark for Pipe as /u/kindground suggested to get there, too...
1.) How long has he been vaping? is he familiar enough not to be botherd by dripping?
2.) what was the brand of butter rum tobacco?
3.) did he smoke canadian classic regular or silver(lights)?
> 2.) what was the brand of butter rum tobacco?
OP, here's a couple that look like they're regulars in Canada:
He's vaped for about three months, and hes not a dripper as much as I wish, hes on a kangertech Subox and running the atty that comes with it. Also the brand was Loranns Butter Rum arguably the better of the few on the market & he smoked nothing but regulars.
INW S'camel (might be called something else now), Garuda, and Dirty Neutral Base would be a good start.
Also, Flavorah Cured Tobacco with DNB would be good as well, although the flavor tends to fade after a while.
I will randomly throw tobaccos together to see what it turns out like, the most recent was:
- AM4A (INW) 2.00%
- RY4 Double (TFA) 3.00%
- Cured Tobacco (FLV) 4.00%
- Garuda (INW) 1.60%
it was good, but probably not what someone fresh of the smokes is after.
I'd suggest
- INW s'camel 3
- INW garuda 2
- INW DNB .5 (leave this out if it's not your thing)
- FLV cured tob 3
for a strong cigarette like tobacco.
In my experience, people fresh off the smokes (or ones that just are craving a cigarette taste) respond best to dark, bold, less sweet flavors. Replicating a cigarette is not really possible, and once the person realizes that and gets the idea out of their head, I have found that they gravitate initially toward these types of flavors. I make this for my buddy that craves cigarette taste all the time and he loves it:
- Coffee (INW) 2.00%
- Creamy Hazelnut (FW) 3.00%
- Dark Chocolate (MF) 0.70%
- Cured Tobacco (FLV) 1.00%
> INW s'camel
I just did a post on S'Camel, my conclusion (unsubstantiated except for some anecdotal confirmation by bobbysavage) is that it's pretty much Ethyl Maltol and Acetyl Pyrazine. I would personally cut that out of your suggested mix or drop it down to 0.5% for a "real tobacco" vibe. But then again, I like my baccos strong as fuck.
While I believe attempting to replicate a cigarette requires a pyrazine aspect, I prefer more intense tobacco flavors. I love strong, bold pipe types. Personally I'm unimpressed with pyrazine-y concentrates such as nutty P, HS T5, INW 555 gold, 3 five, HS Indian, etc.
I love gold ducat and am4a types. Got any suggestions for me? I've been looking at black or dark for pipe among some others and it sounds like we like similar types of tobaccos.
I love Dark For Pipe. It's my fav from the For Pipe collection. Also look at Super Concentrates from BCV. There's a bunch of good ones. Cohiba is the one I'm messing about with right now. French Pipe is interesting, more on the aromatic side and not that tobacco-y. You could also try Maxx Blend, Black n Mild (Black Mile), Mild Seven (Seven), Seven Stars and Turkish. I have those all steeping for testing right now but a buddy of mine who knows his shit recommended them.
Just stumbled on this in the January Monthly by /u/dericksermon:
A nice authentic tobacco blend with caramel and light rum, well balanced and not too dry.
White Ox
FA Shade 3%
FA Soho 8%
FW Salted Caramel 2%
FA Caramel 1.2%
LA Butter Rum 3.5%
INW Dirty Neutrel Base 0.5%
INW Canadian is a sweet virginia type tobacco. I'm just drop tasting a 9 month old sample right now but I'm not getting any maple flavor like I did when it was fresh. I am tasting honey though along with a slight flue-cured type of taste.
For butter rum tobacco I'm thinking you'd want a drier, darker, earthier tobacco vs a cigarette type tobacco. Hangsen Gold & Silver, Hangsen Deluxe, and SC/VZ Pall Mall would all probably do quite well.
Been meaning to try INW Canadian and Hangsen Canadian. A buddy told me add to combine them 3% each and add a few drops of Bitter Wizard to get somewhere close to Canadian tobacco. Must try.
How's Silver, Gold, Deluxe and Pall Mall? Like, some real rugged tobacco vibes goin on there or what?
'Gold & Silver' by HS is supposed to be a cherry sort of pipe; It's pretty good but fails to deliver on the cherry, IMO. Steeped a week or so comes out more as a plum and over a short time eventually prune... Might have been the 3% I was at, though.
I'm putting together an order right now and I'm throwing butter rum in there. I'll keep you posted if I find any winners.
Thank ya, I'll be sure to do the same
Got it in last night and included it in a couple RY4 mixes I'm working. Sure is a strong flavor! Tried it at 1%. Dropped that sucker down to .25%. I think the whole mix is going to require a pretty long steep, so it's a bit too soon to tell.
Don't know if you came up with anything or quit looking, but I figured since I bought this flavor based on this post I might as well share the recipe I used it in. Kind of a lot of stuff in there, and oddly enough the Butter Rum still comes through the most.

Dude I dont know what Butter Rum is, had to google it (we dont heat many beverages in the south).
Sounds great though, and I think you got some good recommendations.
Inawera's Wera Garden has some great tobacco absolutes like
- Virginia
- and Garuda
INW DNB (Dirty Neutral Base) could help to make whatever you get "more ashy" use sparingly though
I havent tried a lot of Hangsen so i cant say for them
so disregard my lack of hangsen exp: I think everyone here is spot on
Hahahahaha I can't say I knew what it was before he introduced me to it, not exactly a flavour that jumps off of the shelves but it's the only, and I mean ONLY flavour my uncle insists on vaping.
I'm going to try and get him into some other flavors slowly but surley but for the time being this is it. I was curious about the DNB, I might use it in another blend down the road, as i'm not sure it would mix so well in a Butter Rum.
OP, you've sparked quite a discussion thread here. Echoing some of the choices from my peers, I would recommend INW Dark For Pipe, INW Virginia, INW Cavendish, INW Dirty Neutral Base.
Personally, I would skip Gold Ducat, it has a honey note that might put the butter rum over the top and land you in desert tobacco territory which I don't think you're looking for. Some people detect the honey note as molasses or something but either way, too sweet.
And skip RY4 too. Not for a smoker who wants the real.
How tobacco-y was the tobacco in your uncle's adv? That would actually give us more clarity. Maybe RY4 will do fine if it was not a hardcore blend. Matter of fact, what flavor was it exactly? If we can find it online, we can try to clone it. I'm Canadian :)
Ah, howdy fellow Canuck, I'll be sure to skip the ry4 and ducat, also he just smokes Regular Canadian Classics, its nothing special more of a budget brand in Nova Scotia. I'm quite sure its a cured Virginia tobacco. I'm not saying it would be difficult to clone, but I think that the simplicity and lack of depth to the smoke would honestly make it quite troublesome
