Hey guys. This is my first "from scratch" mix. I have made several that others have made, trying to learn how some of the flavors meld and such. I decided to post here as a WIP type thread. The plan is shake and vape to get first impressions. Let sit for a week and steep, try again, and then again for one more week. At that point I think I might have a good idea on how the mix is going and can start over with alterations where needed.
I wanted to make a Matcha Latte. I love green tea, probably too much. I have looked into a couple out there that exist and they weren't "authentic" enough for me, for lack of a better term. I tried MYLK's Green Tea they have and it was too sweet and creamy for me. The Green Tea didn't come out the way I wanted, and was more "Green Tea" than Matcha to me. I looked into Tea Up's flavor they had, but in the flavor notes they talk about a mocha. To me, Green Tea Latte isn't coffee/mocha tasting. I didn't try it so I can't say I wouldn't enjoy it, just didn't sound what I was looking for. Sorry for the long windedness, just wanting to be thorough. So here goes:
Matcha Latte
- Green Tea (FE) 1.2%
- Sweet Cream (TPA) 2%
- Fresh Cream (FA) 2%
- Meringue (FA) 1.2%
- Dairy/Milk (TPA) 0.5%
FE - Green Tea: This is the going to be the prominent flavor. I used /u/exclusivegirl Green Tea Kitkat and the amazing green tea notes that were used, into account. I tried the same 3 green tea's as her recipe and found very similar results. This green tea is the best, hands down. At the right %'s there is even some of the mouthfeel there that exists when drinking the latte.
The cream notes are as follows. I decided on the ones here mainly due to the lack of vanilla tones. I am looking for a straight, good cream mix.
TFA - Dairy/Milk: This to me was slightly creamy. I get a little butter, or almost fatty aftertaste and it hits me with a small, earthy tone in the end.
TFA - Sweet Cream: This is the heavy cream that I am looking for. It reminds me of a good heavy whipping cream or fatty whole milk. I found no vanilla in this, and again, in the aftertaste I got a small nutty taste on my tongue after trying the flavor
FA - Fresh Cream: There was a lot of density to this. I added for a good mouthfeel. It has a slightly sweet taste to it, so I figured it would be a good start to add a dense feel to the latte
FA - Meringue: I added this to get some more of the cream, but moreso to try and simulate the frothyness of the Matcha Latte after you finish whisking it together. I am hoping it can achieve this.
Shake and Vape: I started off by just smelling the mix. The green tea did not seem to come out at all. There was a slight sour note to the smell as well. After I saturated the coils/cotton the green tea smell came out a little more and the sour note had dropped some.
I then tasted a drop to see how it went. There is a slight sweetness to the mix. There were not any sour notes that I picked up from the taste, thank god. There was a good amount of creaminess to the mix here. The green tea starts to show its face, and there was an earthy aftertaste
Once I vaped it, the green tea really came out. Mostly on the inhale, not much on the exhale, which I am hoping for. I am looking for a slight green tea exhale with heavy cream notes. After the vape, there is a nutty/buttery taste that lays on the tongue and in the mouth. It is fairly dense, has some mouthfeel. I hope this continues through the rest of the steeping process.
There you go, notes on how I felt for each flavor and the shake and vape impressions. I will update each weekend for the next couple of weeks to see how the mix matures. Of course I am open to any criticism. From what I have seen, most of this community is very positive on the comments and criticism. Thanks for reading!
Edit: I apologize for the recipe tag in the title. I thought it was a tag, not flair.
UPDATE: One Week Steep
So, its been a week since I mixed this up and I feel its coming along nicely. I don't think it will change from this week to the next, but I will soon find out.
The smell right at first still has a slight sour smell that is soon overcome by the floral notes of the FE Green tea. I am now seeing what /u/thediryproject and others mentioned. It seems more floral with the creams than by itself. I might try to play with other Green Tea's for this mix. I enjoy the floral, almost Jasmin of this though, so I can't say I dislike it at all.
I tasted the mix and it comes off much sweeter and creamier. The floral notes come out as well in the mix. I vaped it and I can say I am enjoying it so far. Its very creamy and slightly sweet from the creams I used. There is very little to no vanilla notes, which I was trying for. There is a slight throat hit from the mix, which was surprising, but nothing horrible. It fades after the second or third draw. It is floral, as I mentioned. Very creamy on the exhale. There is a nice mix of earthy, nutty, buttery tones left on the tongue and leaves a good aftertaste.
That wraps up the first week. I think with just this first week test, this will surely be in my rotation. I enjoy Green Tea vapes and this one is pretty good for those looking for a slightly sweet, fatty green tea with not much vanilla in it.
For me, the ideal "matcha" latte has the perfect balance of earthiness and sweetness. The benchmark would probably be a Starbucks green tea latte. And after multiple reiterations, I have found that FE just doesn't play well with the rest of the creams (way too floral).
I've been having some success using TFA Green Tea. However, the issue with TFA's version is that it's a fragile flavoring. Use too little and you won't get much out of it. Too much and it just tastes like flowers.
Starfucker
-
TFA Green Tea - 4.5%
-
CAP Sweet Cream - 2%
-
CAP French Vanilla - 2%
-
TFA Vanilla Swirl - 2%
-
FA Meringue - 1.5%
-
TFA Cotton Candy - 0.5%
Even this, I feel it's not quite there yet. It's missing that richness that greets your palate the minute you sip a green tea latte. Frothy, earthy, sweet with rich vanilla undertones. I'm still playing around with it but I'll definitely report back if I make any breakthroughs.
That looks like an amazing mix. I can see that being very close to the Starbucks drink. I'm more of a fan of the cream, but not the sweet of it.
So far the FE has been ok. This is my first experiment mixing it with creams, so I may hit the floral notes you mentioned after some steeping. My issue with TFA may have been not hitting that sweet spot yet with it. I may try with it some more as well. The creams I chose seem to have earthy, nutty tones on the exhale and on the tongue so I'm hoping that will play into the green tea some. I may mix yours up to try though, looks good!
FE Green Tea is great but it's not exactly matcha. Not earthy enough, more on the floral side. Been meaning to experiment with Taro and see if that helps. Recipe looks good though!
I'm so happy to see someone else found, in the words of /u/Apexified, "something to use my bottle of FE Green Tea for other than the recipe everyone bought it for."
Fantastic notes here, gunna mix this up once my new flavors arrive in the mail today! I have been chasing my white whale (cloning adirondack's McKinley) since the day I started mixing, so any creamy tea recipes are always very helpful but this sounds delish all to its own :)
