Lack of throat hit with DIY
submitted over 8 years ago by stayinwonderland

I visited home in the UK over christmas and bought some of my favourite eliquid as I'd yet to find anything I liked in the US. (for those over that way, if you like custard, Digby's Mum's Custard is awesome). I bought 3mg.

It gave me such a blast of throat hit and also quite a strong nic buzz. I brought a small amount back with me and been rationing it out. So between using that I've been sat here, surrounded by my DIY bottles, trying to find something of equivalent satisfaction. My DIY feels like zero nic now. I even made some 4mg which feels like nothing.

I've been exclusively DIY for a while now (until Christmas when I bought the Mum's Custard) and I was reminded how dramatic the difference is in throat hit between SOME bought eliquids vs my home made. I don't know that I've ever managed to create a decent throat hit with my own recipes.

Not sure if maybe my nic is getting old? It's been in the fridge for about 6 months shrug not sure if that's an issue.

So two questions - is there anything folks are doing or bearing in mind, with regards to throat hit, when creating their own eliquids? and is there any guess as to why the Mum's Custard is packing such a punch?

What VG/PG ratio are you making your liquids?

Just a quick search of Digbys Mum's Custard shows that it's mixed at 50/50 which is likely why you're getting that throat hit.

> Everyone and their dog has a custard nowadays. Ours is a little bit special, Vanilla Custard with slowly simmered milk and brown sugar. This 50/50 juice will leave all you custard hunters wanting more.

I use 60/40. But the hit feels like the nic. I think anyway. Not sure if certain makes of PG/VG have a stronger hit than others. But like I say, the mum's also feels like stronger nic, so I'm more leaning towards the type of nic used.

It could be the nic. Maybe they are using nic that isn't as good as what you are buying. By not as good I mean that it has a more peppery throat hit to it and the stuff that you are buying might be a lot smoother.

A ratio with more PG than VG does yield a stronger throat hit in my experience. Try mixing at 50/50.

PG definitely causes a throat hit. I can't vape 50/50 stuff because I can't stand the throat hit.

I'm a fan of vanilla custards, and always looking out for a way to add a little something to make my DIY VC special. I'll have to try adding a touch of brown sugar.

I have two dogs and neither one of them has a custard.

....TFA Brown Sugar right.....not like just off the shelf brown sugar.

I'd attribute it to either a calculation mistake at the shop or a lack of them shaking their 100% VG nic. Shop juices seem to be the most inconsistent juices out there. A lot of them don't even bother with mixing by weight.

doubtful, it's not a shop, it's an eliquid company of a few years. That said, it's gotta be something along those lines.

Quick question, are you hoping to get that throat hit? I've seen many experienced mixers suggest using a drop of TFA Jalapeno to achieve a throat hit.

I am up for the throat hit yes, but I feel it's a nic thing. I mean, I personally feel they have stronger nic or something, it literally just feels like there's MORE nic in there. But I don't think they themselves are putting in some harsh ingredient to add an extra bite. It's also evidenced by the fact that I'd feel high as a kite after a few hits.

You're likely right that the nic being used by them is possibly a higher concentration than advertised if you are getting a noticeable buzz compared to juices you mix at the same nic concentration. But like I said, if you want to stay at your current nic concentration in your liquids, consider researching TFA Jalapeño.

I recently have taken some part time work at a vape shop that makes juice from scratch in house.

I would advise against custard flavors, as they are the ones most likely to contain the chemicals that lead to popcorn lung.

As for too much throat hit, it's the PG ratio. Try going to a 70/30 or an 80/20 if you don't have a mod that can do pure VG.

The chemicals that lead to popcorn lung, diacetyl, is found in concentrations up to 750 times higher in cigarettes. Yet not one case of popcorn lung has been attributed to cigarettes.

Please stop spreading inaccurate information, just because you work in a vape shop doesn't mean this info is accurate.

You have terrible reading comprehension. OP wants the throat hit so how would a higher VG ratio help with that?

Also, to anyone reading this, I would advise against going to the vape shop that /u/Lurking_Still works at. He clearly has terrible reading comprehension and has shown a lack of knowledge when it comes to safety. He's probably the type to send a new vaper home with a hybrid mech mod, and EFire battery, and a sub ohm tank.

Well, I suppose fuck me for misreading that he wanted more throat hit.

That being said, this sub is salty as fuck about me sharing info I was given by my boss about custards having more diacetyl in them than say, fruit flavors.

Whatever, I joined this sub to learn about infusions for flavor bases, it seems to be a bit too angsty here to share information.

I thought I was fairly polite. The issue isn't that you're sharing information, but that you're spreading misinformation. This is the same misinformation that the FDA is trying to use to demonize vaping.

You have absolutely zero idea what you are talking about with in regards to custard flavors. Go back to lurking.

Sure, ok. Fuck me for relaying information given to me by my boss, who makes the flavors we sell.

He may make the juice, but he doesn't make the flavors. And if your boss is talking about popcorn lung in regards to vaping, he is completely full of shit.
