Yeah, this isn't a throwaway.
Let me go ahead and just preface by saying how much a appreciate everyone in this place, even the haters. I love everyone here, the postive the negative, it all comes together to make everyone learn and push the artform forward. I love mixing, I've recently had issues with my throat but I still push through, I don't nearly vape as much I used to, I wish I could but it hurts so much, but I still try every day. I love you guys more and more every day. Super welcoming here.
I have the feeling that to say I want to give a shoutout to the people who keep things moving solid and together, IDIOT [sic], dirtyprojector, ConcreteRiver, whiskey, skiddlzninja (I love you, we should have been together, think about it, Manson, EdibleMalfunction, diketones, Vurve, other people I forgot about offhand, but constantly interact with every day cuz I have too much free time. Everyone who helps new people out in the new mixers thread. It's just really postive and really brings me up. I have emotional problems sometimes, but seeing people help each other, and helping people just makes me feel better about stuff sometimes. It's all real good stuff. Thanks guys.
Another thing that really adds up is the constant influx of flavor notes and information, ConcreteRiver, ConcreteRiver, also ConcreteRiver, HashSlingingSlashur, mysticrosell, wh1skeyk1ng, and everyone else! Also ConcreteRiver! Superb notes all around, helps me every day, every month, when thinking of flavors to get. I use it all the time. Love yah, love it, thank you.
But, also notice how organzied the weekly threads are? I believe thats kirkt? Weekly New Mixers Questions thread, Weekly New "What can I make threads", monthly recipe threads, contests. The moderator team is fuckin killing it. A shoutout to everyone who is keeping that shit down. You guys are fucking making magic happen every day. Love yah guys. Keep it up.
I'll tell you. Wow.
The entire bloody group is pack of saints, taking the piss and shit of new people and giving it their all, day in, and day out.
There should be daily "Thank you team" posts, honestly.
That being said, I'll continue to try to help this great group of people as best I can and hope that we can spread some postivity around these parts. And I hope EVERYONE keeps posting, keeps adding, keeps helping, keeps moving forward and doing what they can to see this beautiful community keep moving on up.
Because an entire post that's just all negative is just dumb. Come on dude, don't be such a fucking asshole.
LOL, #DoDLivesMatter
I'm just glad that douchebags like /u/abdada are gone because that guy was a real pain in my ass.
Things are way better here now.
Agreed.
Glad they banned his narcissistic sociopathic Dunning and Kruger style ass.
Thanks for the shoutout! I definitely wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for this place.
Rant time.
You know..I used to call this place my home. For about a year and a half, every day, I would comment something, interact with people, etc. Something seemed to change with this sub. Maybe it was the influx of new guys. Maybe it was the "veterans" getting bored. Who knows what the catalyst was. We all saw it happening slowly, and we miss what this place used to be.
Some of the veteran guys have vanished, some have moved onto bigger projects, some have had families and have no time now. But the one thing that bothers me the most is that a lot of the new guys see the veteran guys as being "elitist" since we're not as active anymore. This is especially true for the DoD group/crew/possy/gang..whatever we're referred to as these days. You know who we are, because we get shat on for it any time it's brought up. If any of you read this, just know that we're not intentionally trying to be "elitist" in any way. We've formed friendships with each other and, since DoD is our new home now, a lot of people see that as us just giving up on the sub.
I can't speak for the group as a whole, but for me, it feels like we've sort of stepped aside to let the newer guys take our place. The constant influx of "fuck Skiddlz, fuck Manson, fuck Wayne", etc. is just further distancing the DoD people (whether it's us, or the members) from this sub. New people see this, and assume we're all just completely pretentious assholes. I don't want any of you to think I've abandoned this place completely. It just gets frustrating being called out for something we try to help so many other people with.
As I said, I can't speak for the group as a whole. But this is me reaching out to the people saying those things and hoping we can all just get along with each other and stop the name-calling and bickering from both sides. We're all just people who started mixing to stop smoking. Let's not pretend anyone is better than anyone else because of that.
I miss you guys <3
I haven't seen any amount of negativity specifically directed towards DIYorDIE except for myself just saying that it's probably not worth the money. I've never expressed any negative feelings towards any of the members that's for sure!
I literally didn't know anyone even cared that much about DIYorDIE or DoD (I guess) and the members who are in it until I saw the thread earlier today. I just thought it was so dumb I had to make a mocking post here. [removed]
BTW really excited to try Pebbles when I get the rest of the flavorings needed.
BTW what do you think of new FA Yogurt?
He called the new FA Yogurt "Pickled foot mayonnaise."
/u/NotCharlesManson, as one of the newer guys you have stepped aside for, those are some big shoes to fill. Any advice at all you can give about making it more like the place you miss would be greatly appreciated.
I call this place my home. Or a better description would be my neighborhood. There are a few hateful mofos but you'd get that in any neighborhood. I understand your frustration obviously but you know that attitude represents a very small minority and there are many wonderful people here who stay positive and enjoy helping others and honing their craft together. There shouldn't be any DoD vs. reddit nonsense. In general, the two complement each other very well and what's good for one is good for the other. People discover one though the other and if mixers are smart, they'll use both -- as well as various other forums and resources -- to get and share information. DoD and the sub aren't in some kind of competition with each other, and if they are competing in some area or another, well, that just makes both better, doesn't it? Or at least has the potential to.
lol, I searched for about half an hour trying to find the pickled foot mayonnaise quote. All I could find was so much love and admiration for FA Yogurt OLD,.... reading it, honestly it's like a reading a tragedy "I love FA Yogurt, its so good" "I heard they changed it" "I haven't tried it yet" "Its probably not as good" "I don't know still haven't tried it yet, it might be alright"
Really sad knowing the ending.
>I was kind of hoping everyone would keep shit positive within this thread, but I feel like you kinda left a wide opening for that not to happen.
Meh..if people just see the DoD mention and not read my entire novel of a comment, maybe. But hopefully they'll see it as me being sincere and we can all just have a nice, long, greased up hug.
By the way, sorry for hi-jacking your thread. I just thought it would be a good opportunity to express how much I miss this place and the people in it, while explaining my absence. No harm intended, man.
Also, the new FA Yogurt isn't really a yogurt flavor. They've tricked all of us into vaping footmilk.
By the way, the top comment chain of this very post contains negativity directed specifically at DoD. Maybe you don't notice it, but the "veterans" who call DoD home now certainly do, and it's the reason most of us don't post here much anymore.
I'm gonna have to get a bit of context or sourcing there. I'm not understanding. I see a vague reference to DoD. Does that really count as someone targeting you guys specifically?
I mean....I wasn't even aware you, manson, or....other person, not vurve....I knew vurve was in there. Theres another one, can't remember it. But really, I think you guys are blowing it out of proportion because of some trolls.
I have noticed that the trolls fucking LOOOOOVE hating on ~~enwreckrer~~ wayne and DIYorDIE. But its starting to be where I'm seeing more hating of people being targeted then actual people hating. Fuckin #DoDLivesMatter up in this bitch.
I still lurk here at least once a week. Still listen to In the Mix. Still mixing new recipes, and this will be the first and only place I share the truly worthwhile ones. The problem, or at least the reason I do not actively participate much anymore, is all these new guys that don't share that view. They post shit, and then they band together in defense of each other's shitposts. We've been run out of our home by arrogant assholes.
If you're reading this and have ever thought "fuck the old timer elitests" you're probably an arrogant asshole. I'm a hubristic asshole. There's a distinct and important difference. My arrogance is well founded, but I allow that there are many people that are better mixers than I.
Skiddlz is a seriously weird dork, but he's a better mixer than just about everyone here, including me. He gets to be as eccentric as he wants to be, because he put in the work. The new guys don't appreciate that because he's not shitposting lazy flavor notes.
There's so much truth here. I hate to make it about new guys vs. old guys. But once the veterans left, we started seeing an influx of entitled cunts, people who expected shit spoonfed to them, people who created dupe accounts to mass downvote others for no apparent reason, people who have contributed absolutely nothing (except stealing recipes and selling them on DIY_classifieds), yet still have the audacity to call me and many other senior mixers out for silly things.
You're a good mixer and you've released a few good recipes. It's quite a shame that you don't post here anymore. We need more people holding down the fort and carrying the torch since NCM, skiddlz, botboy and the rest of them aren't as active.
Thank you for explaining my "elitist" rant in more appropriate vocabulary. Elitism doesn't carry the sense of accomplishment that Hubris does. And thanks for the defense, always much appreciated.
Much like Manson, i used to call this place home as well.
My goal in here? Make sure everyone knows how to mix delicious e-liquid to their liking.
It was a tough road at first. There was little information curated towards beginners. There was so much to talk about. I taught people how to understand flavor layers. How to do single flavor tasting. How to review flavor reviews; as a matter of fact, the very ones you mention from Concrete River are an adapted layout from the way I suggested to do them.
Along the way though, i felt like the beginner thread and my posts were some of the only safe havens. So many downright rude and disgusting posts from people I've never even heard of. I slowly felt less and less appreciated posting beginner content in a subreddit that explicitly and brazenly bashed beginners.
Despite the fact I've always been a part of DoD, i always kept my posts here because i considered this home. However, the aforementioned behavior caused me to seek out an alternative where the information would be put to better use. Cue me moving Modest Monday to DoD with the stipulation that all my beginner articles will continue and always be free.
Everyone in the DIYorDIE social medias are always met with warm open arms. Everyone is willing to help and being a jackass is liable to get you booted from the groups. It's a community designed to help each other succeed. We are a family. No question too stupid to be asked.
I still post here on occasion, helping new people. The decision to move over wasn't over night though. It just slowly happened over a period of months, with me spending my time where i felt more needed and more helpful.
Call me elitist if you want, but I'm still posting free beginner articles and material nearly every week despite working a 60 hour a week job and helping everyone i can that has a question.
oooo, Vurve, you were supposed to be on there was well. I miss the the Modest Mondays. I remember the last one just having a bunch of people bitching about the DIYorDIE site, and I didn't get it, because....the whole thread was there anyways.
I still plan on posting them in here, with full text.
It's been a while since I've gotten around to writing a new one.
I really appreciate them, I went back and saw that the Cereal Base one was only available to be read via DIYorDIE.
I realize it is free and of course it takes a lot of time and extra effort to reformat/dumb down the content to fit reddit's styling. Would it be offensive if someone else were to go through and do that for you and would you still post it here as well?
I don't like jumping back and forth between websites and DIYorDIE is a very content heavy website. And it really puts a heavy load on my laptop and my work pc. Like.....really bad. The homepage itself crashes my laptop's graphics card usually. That's my problem I understand... but reddit itself never gives me problems.
Also, if you care, i posted one of the legacy Modest Mondays on Monday.
Was going to officially post in Monday with my new article, but i might go ahead and do it tonight
http://diyordievaping.com/2017/01/16/modest-monday-layering-flavors/
> I'm still posting free beginner articles and material
You forgot to mention hosting the best podcast in vaping!
There are some warm open arms here too and it the best source of searchable information with comment sections offering various helpful opinions and experiences rather than not being searchable or having only the opinions and experiences of a few. But you do have to deal with dickheads as well, and such is the nature of reddit itself, I think. DoD social medias and other forums are little less freedom of speechy in the sense of what's allowed and what's likely to get you booted. So there are some real pricks and they're not going anywhere. And I can't fault anyone for wanting less of that kind of negativity in their lives. But I hate that you felt unappreciated for all you have done to help beginners, which is what everyone who's not a beginner should either do or GTFO.
I still think this is an awesome place. I love it and many of the people in it. You might not ever feel at home here again because of shit you've dealt with here and the respect and appreciation you can get elsewhere, but from someone struggling to make this sub even better than it already is, any advice you can give to make it more like the home it once was to you would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I applaud your stipulation that all of your beginner articles remain free. I wish you'd get on with rewriting the ones about single-flavor testing and single-flavor testing setups. I linked to those so many times when trying to help people in the "What Can I make with these flavors" thread and elsewhere and will continue to do so wherever they are.
I think this place is doing great. The move to more objective information, flavor notes, etc. have benefited the sub drastically, something I've been a proponent of for a LONG time. I don't care too much about the little dorks who make 12 alts to shit on my little website all day. I've dealt with it since the first time I showed my face. But I don't like when the work of the others gets minimized just because of the association. Nor do I like when the community that chooses to stick around DOD more often, get's minimized because they get their information on a different forum. I completely agree with /u/ID10-T and think the two entities compliment each other well. It is a shame though when supporters of DOD feel like their walking on eggshells around here because of only a small few. But I guess thems the breaks.
It's a god damned shame. We don't have tools to effectively silence them though, because they'll just make new accounts if they are nasty enough to get their current accounts banned. All people who choose to spend time on reddit can really do is try to outweigh the negativity with positivity. You see a lot of people doing that with their up- and down-votes, but actually speaking up would be even better. And if wading into shit isn't their thing, just doing their best to make valuable contributions and be encouraging, helpful, and supportive to others would go a long way.
That post you linked to was inspirational.
> There should be daily "Thank you team" posts, honestly.
What about like a weekly or monthly "Best of" post? Best post, best comment, best tip, funniest comment, whatever. A place for people note things they wish they could give more than one upvote to.
I actually really love this idea. I have wanted to pop in, and comment, just to thank people for the work they've put in countless times. At the same time, I don't want to flood informative threads with my thanks.
Also, I wish there was a better way to give back to those who do create content consistently, but don't sell any goods or services. Honestly, I'd like to be able to give something back because everything you guys do costs you not only time, but money as well. The community should be able to patronize you guys if we're willing because what you guys do is literally destroying the learning curve in mixing your own liquids. All of you are collectively making it easier to get into DIY, as well as making it easier to do it cheaper, and more successfully.
The people who are destroying your learning curve had theirs destroyed by those who came before them and are now just paying it forward and generally enjoying doing so. I can't speak for all of them of course, but I'm willing to bet most would say your thanks is enough. And I don't think a few kind words are going to clutter up a thread so much as to interfere with their informativeness.
If you love this "best of" idea, how'd you like to be in charge of writing it up and making sure it gets posted every week (or month if weekly seems too frequent for such a thing), like I'm doing with the Flavor of the Week and Kirkt does every month with the monthly recipe thread? If not, that's ok, I bet we can get /u/Tipup300 to volunteer.
I understand a lot of people do it for the gratification that comes with helping others, but at the same time it doesn't seem like enough. Although I've only been lurking here for 3-4 months, I've read a ton of this Sub's "history" while researching various topics. I've noticed that some of the popular contributors have just dissapeared. I think the trend of some of the most active members just disappearing from the DIY scene completely might have to do with them feeling unappreciated.
I'm not saying we should push people to donate to their favorite mixers/scorn them for not donating; but I think mediating a way for people to donate supplies (via wishlists) or cash (via PayPal addresses etc.) would be a pleasant surprise for any recipient's. It might motivate new people to actively contribute when they see the support other mixers recieve. Honestly man, I just don't want to see anymore of you guys dissappear!
In regards to the thread, I'm sure I could organize something like that. Tonight I'll be a bit busy finishing up some college work I'm behind on. But once I'm done, I'd like to bounce some ideas off you concerning the thread, if you don't mind of course.
Thanks for the shoutout...
oh, wait nm ಠ_ಠ
~~Hey! You were nice to me that one time!~~ wrong person
Hey! You preached about CAP Super Sweet murdering small children and I upvoted it at one point because I get down on that sort of thing, one time!
Hey! How you been!
I just delete mean messages before I hit send. Then give you a mildly demeaning RES tag ;)
I believe that was /u/ID10-T talking about his Super Sweet Semen Eraser
I haven't blown my whole vasectomy fund on flavors yet, but I'll still hoping CAP Super Sweet will get that sperm count down low enough that I can.
Any shout out type of list regarding "people who keep things moving solid and together" is just grossly incomplete without a /u/Apexified and a Goldfish18 in there, IMO.
Thanks for the shoutout. I don't think I belong in the same breath as the others. I just try to help out when I can. I'm planning on making some more time to give to the sub. I know I have a few flavors that haven't been reviewed yet so I'm going to start there. But mad props to everyone else. You're the foundation of this place, regardless of how much time you spend here nowadays. Fuck the loser throwaways who say otherwise.
Thanks.
I'm the idiot mod who allowed that rant to be posted, then went to sleep while it blew up. It's probably the single dumbest thing I've done as a mod here, and I've been feeling really bad about it - especially the way Skidz was treated. He's a good guy and a friend and I would never have allowed that abuse to go on had I been aware of it. Anyway, your post made me feel a little better so thanks.
I commend you for not silencing the one guy who dared to say what a lot of people were thinking. It's frustrating when a contest is won by the same people who organize it. I commend you for being fair, and letting people voice their opinions even if it contradicts with yours. I hope THAT made you feel better.
Shhhhhhhhhh you're tarnishing Colt's image.
Colton is an eagle scout, spends weekends volunteering in a soup kitchen, and bought a segway just so he could lend it to old ladies who wanted to cross the street. His farts smell like Rhodonite and his gym shoes smell like Bronuts.
Been a long time lurker but very much appreciative of all the work of the community and the direction that flavour notes, ATF and DoD have taken the DIY scene. Wish I had more to offer and will try to be more involved in future, but big props to everyone in the last year. As Wayne said in one of his videos, 2016 was a great year for the DIY community and Im happy it's continuing on an upwards trend.
Thanks for the mention,if it weren't for all the great people you included: I'd never have been inspired enough to share my notes and actually do flavor reviews. Thanks to everyone for sharing valuable information and keeping this subreddit alive and prosperous
Thanks, you're pretty awesome yourself. And guys, as much as I like to give ya'll shit, I do appreciate what we have here. I see it as a form of camaraderie and perhaps rivalry. The newbies have it a little tougher with the hazing, but if you manage to put up with it, you really do become closer. <3
Circles of jerks.
