LB Rainbow Sherbet
submitted over 8 years ago by automaticfailure

I've seen a bunch of posts about new mixers wanting to start off with LiquidBarn's kit. This was my introduction into DIY. Due to there isn't any notes, thought I'd attempt to give it a go.

All tests are mixed at the recommended percentages from LiquidBarn's site.

Setup: Derringer, 24g 8 wrap .63 ohm, 45w, 1/2 wick

Testing: Rainbow Sherbet, 8%, 60/40 vg/pg, Steep 5 days

Flavor Description: Very light, like really light. There is some cream to it, though it's more of a freezepop icy than ice cream. This is more of the orange / blue variant of sherbet. Mainly the orange part. I know it's all around the same flavor, just different color, but I get the feeling of orange, not the flavor but the color. There is a hint of blue, whatever that is, on the back of the exhale. Light sweetness not from the flavor, but the VG. The first few drags tasted like straight VG.

Off-flavors: This comes as a mainly VG based solution, 85/15, so the taste of VG is quite present.

Throat Hit: None, very light and smooth.

Uses & Pairings: Creams definite, it needs something to bring out the texture and give it volume. Some bakery type flavors maybe? I am not sure what sherbet can be used in other than just eaten straight from the container.

Notes: Could be the fact I used a single coil, but this left me pretty disappointed. The overpowering VG made me wonder if I was even doing this right. It's my first attempt at single flavor testing.

My brother made a sherbet recipe the first day we got everything. He says he can taste it more, since the recipe is also used with other LiquidBarn flavorings, so makes me think a cream base is needed for Rainbow Sherbet to really shine.

Recipe
LB Rainbow Sherbet - 8%
LB Vanilla Bean Ice Cream - 5%
LB Cream - 2%

Not bad for a first attempt for someone who didn't have any knowledge of how mixing works, just knowing he needed an overall percentage. If I remember right, it's a close representation of what a spoonful of sherbet is.

Nice review! I wish i was more confident in my writing so I could write up some flavor reviews. This flavor used to be my ADV. Once you get it right, it tastes great. I mixed it at around 13%. LB has a lot of hidden gems (Bakers Touch, Blue Rasperry and chocolate peppermint). Maybe I should just man-up (or woman-up) and write some flavor reviews.

Just go for it. I've been reading the ones ConcreteRiver puts out and compared to him, I am nowhere in the ball park of what he can throw down.

Is it possible you didn't account for it being a VG dominant flavor like it says on their website? What did you use as a calculator? Usually when something is VG dominant, you have to account for it in your mix. Otherwise, you'll be putting too much VG overall and the flavor will be weak. It sucks that Liquid Barn decided to put both PG and VG in this flavoring lol. That makes it a bit more difficult to pick one.

I used ejuicemeup and changed the vg/pg per the flavoring.

Well, you did that perfectly then..hm.. suppose it may just be a weaker flavor although IME, VG based flavors need a really long steep as well. Regardless, keep testing. It'll only be to your benefit! Thanks!

Someone else commented that it used to be their ADV and they bumped it up to 13%, so either it needs a 2 week+ steep or the flavoring is just weaker as a standalone.

Also, this is the description pulled off of their website, which I'm sure you seen. This is more so for others.
Flavor Description:
The creaminess of raspberry ice cream, infused with the sweetness of an orange, and a hint of citrus lime.

Duh me, I didn't even look at the description. Guess it works better if I don't look, then I am not expecting a flavor profile, just what I seem to taste.
