Vaping can easily become an obsession.

ok I've been mixing all of one week. I have exactly one juice that's "almost" ready of the 10 or so juices I mixed so far. some stray thoughts...

  1. mixing - like all of vaping - is a progression that keeps building. I started vaping 19 months ago with an Istick 50W an Arctic tank and Unicorn Milk. 1 month of vaping and I was done with cigs. Roughly 4 months later the collection "creep" started in. First I learned to build coils and I got my first rda. Now I needed a coil master, all sorts of wire, wire cutters, cotton and all the other other accessories that goes with building. I also had to get all sorts of gadgets to store everything.

  2. After a few months my taste buds were back and then the juice obsession started. I purchased probably 80+ different juices over the course of a year. Of course a good chunk of them were terrible (at least terrible for my taste buds) and went to friends and vape shop donation bins. Then of those I did like came the 120ml bottles. Probably burned through $1200 in juice (I have internet receipts for most orders - I'm too afraid to do an actual tally). Vaping was not yet cheaper than smoking.

  3. With all the juices and building came all the mods (luckily only 6 or so) tried low end and higher end mods. Got the SX mini for $180 or so. Then realized single battery mods suck. Got into provari. great mods - but only 40W. only use those now for my kayfun. Next came the reuildable tanks and rda's. some I like and still use - many I don't. probably $200 -$350 or so spent on rda/rta.

  4. which brings me to today. love the DIY juice. It could all be in my head but it seems to taste "cleaner". maybe it's the lack of all the sucralose and sweeteners found in commercial juice. I don't know but I do seem to like it better. However it took me all of one week to see DIY sucks up money - fast. I got the "beginner stuff" scale, vg/pg, nic, bottles and first set of 25 flavors etc. Mixed some recipes from ELR etc. It became pretty clear I underestimated my first vg order. I'd need more flavors and MUCH more VG. Gallon of VG and second order of flavors placed. Now I realize I need to organize all these bottles etc. or spend 10 minutes before every mix searching through a bin trying to find a flavor. Need to order nail polish racks and other organizing tools.

On the upside I can finally start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. With these last few orders I should be able to mix hundreds of mls of juice I like. the flavor concentrates do go a long way - will only need large 4 oz bottles of a handful of flavors. I think once my DIY is fully up and running that elusive "vaping is cheaper than smoking" may finally be realized.

Is there a question buried in here that I missed, or were you just wanting to share?

Not trying to be a jerk, just want to make sure that if you have a question, it gets answered.

3 points

by geb999over 8 years ago

just sharing. I'm still a new mixer - figured this might be the lace for it. that and no vapers in my household to talk vape-y thing with. :)

was curious if other new mixers found themselves needing more and more stuff as soon.

by ID10-Tover 8 years ago

Safe zone for new mixers, you can post just about anything you want here, but some people might get pedantic about the Questions part of New Mixers' Questions and insist Jeopardy style that you phrase it in the form of a question.

Q: Do other new mixers find themselves needing more and more stuff at an alarming rate?

A: Yes. It becomes an obsession. You have fallen down the rabbit hole. Welcome. Just when you think you have enough flavors, someone will share a recipe that you'll just have to try but of course you're missing a flavor or two, or they'll post a flavor review of a flavor you suddenly can't live without, or you'll eat or drink something and go I need to vape this but you have to go through a dozen different strawberry flavors just to find the just right strawberry to create a vapable version of whatever that thing was.

I've purchased some PG and VGC along with some beakers and concentrates. Do I need to buy nicotine also? Or is it premixed in the PG and VGC? I don't remember selecting a MG level throughout my order from chefs vape and now I'm concerned. As far as I can see though, in their diy vape supplies selection they don't offer liquid nicotine as a standalone product.

4 points

by mully_mayhemover 8 years ago

You'll need to buy nicotine, did you get it from chefsvapour? I can only see .75mg nicotine base and that's way too low to mix with.

4 points

by AdamOnDemandover 8 years ago

That's where I bought the rest of my stuff yeah, thanks for the heads up though! Any recommendations where I can buy some nicotine instead?

4 points

by mully_mayhemover 8 years ago

I assume you're in the UK, I get mine from Nude Nicotine or Hiliq but Nude can be pretty slow with international shipping but the nicotine is really good. Hiliq has really quick shipping and the nicotine was smooth and tasteless.

edit I think the UK has a limit on the strength of nicotine that is allowed to be imported or sold, off the top of my head I think it's 72mg/ml max so I wouldn't order anything stronger than that to be on the safe side.

Thinking of doing a giveaway or contest or whatever for 100 custom vinyl full color bottle labels for people to toss on their DIY juices. Who should I contact for approval?

I'll figure it out tomorrow and post something up. Maybe give out a few stacks -- I haven't printed any in a long long time and can't even remember which vinyl to use so this will at least help me get rid of one roll of vinyl and see if it's the right one.

So I'm looking to get into making my own juice, sick of paying so much for so little. I read the sidebar and it was suggested to pick out a few recipes that you like the looks of. So I picked out a few, I guess I'm a little worried that they are not super simple recipes. But I've worked with measuring small amounts before and figure as long as I pay attention and go slow i should be fine. I made sure to pick at least one recipe that does not need to be steeped, so I can enjoy my diy right away. But I really have a thing for strawberry flavors, so I went with a few strawberry recipes. I'll be measuring by weight.

by mully_mayhemover 8 years ago

Instead of getting 50 x 10ml bottles I'd get 30ml bottles instead, you can always mix 10ml testers up in 30ml bottles.

2 points

by infra_d3adover 8 years ago

That was my first thought also, but in the sidebar I kept seeing get 10ml bottles. I already have enough 30ml bottles to last me a long time lol.

2 points

by mully_mayhemover 8 years ago

Honestly I'd just stick with the 30ml bottles, once you find recipes you like 10ml won't be enough. You seem to have done a lot of research which is awesome to see! Good luck with your first batch of juice, once you see how easy it is you won't go back to buying them.

I love 10mL bottles for testing flavors and recipes. I don't think you'll regret buying a bunch. You can get fifty 10mL bottles for like $5 on Amazon. They're not fancy, but they do what they're supposed to do.

1 points

by erp0432over 8 years ago

For blunt tip needles, you'll need the correct sizes:

18 ga Poly for most all flavorings as well as PG.

12 ga stainless for VG.

19 ga stainless for oddball inawera bottles.

The sizes are different between stainless and poly as odd as that seems.

3 points

by runnbl3over 8 years ago

Does it matter which you start off with? like pg first then vg then nicotine.. etc

5 points

by ID10-Tover 8 years ago

No. People add Nic, PG, VG, and flavors in every possible order and most can give you a good reason why they do it in that order, but in the end it doesn't matter.

5 points

by firefoxwhyyounoworkover 8 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I have actually been doing some testing and find it makes a difference when using acid flavors.

I was reading something on deeper DIY that mentions that you can mask nicotine by neutralizing it with acid.

TFA Pineapple contains 15-20% Lactic acid and under 2% Acetic acid.

I tried adding TFA Pineapple at 3% by adding the concentrate and the nicotine first giving a swirl then adding the PG and VG which are slightly basic.

When I did this on a shake and vape basis (30 mins to 1 hour), my 6 mg juice had the same nic throat hit as 4mg of a juice where the PG and VG were added first.

Tried the same for TFA Apricot and got similar results.

I think this is because if you add the acid and nic first you allow them to react before you add a ton of a weak base (PG:VG)

I could be completely wrong as I have not tested enough flavors and I am still waiting for the juices to steep so can finish my write up.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 8 years ago

That is fascinating! I'm definitely looking forward to reading the full write-up about your findings. But how can you mask TFA Pineapple?

4 points

by queuetueover 8 years agoAllTheFlavors Creator/Admin

Like /u/ID10-T says, not really, but I chose the order on the All the Flavors mixing page intentionally for this reason: 1) Flavors, 2) nic, 3) PG, then 4) VG causes a high viscosity (free flowing) and turbulent effect between steps 3 and 4, potentially causing more mixing to take place before it gets thick.

In addition, I usually shake at this point (between PG and VG), although you can see mid-formulation shaking isn't always a fantastic idea in my latest video. Give it a watch if you'd like to laugh at my misfortune.

I just bought a bottle of Boylan's Birch Beer, it's an American Soda and it tastes similar to an Australian Sarsaparilla. After a search I pretty much only came up with Root Beer concentrate. Is Root Beer similar to Birch Beer?

3 points

by PerennialPhilosopherover 8 years ago

The boylans birch beer is similar to root beer, except it has birch oils in it. I'm not sure where to start in replicating that flavor, but root beer alone isn't going to cut it. I love the stuff so if you figure it out I'd love to know.

by mully_mayhemover 8 years ago

Cheers mate, I think this is going to turn into a wild rabbit chase. I'll let you know if I figure it out but honestly I don't like my chances. I wonder if doing an extract on birch would yield any results, I think it might be hard to replicate the flavour with each batch though.

3 points

by PerennialPhilosopherover 8 years ago

Yeah. from what I've read extracts aren't recommended unless you have some serious filtration, and not even then. Probably not worth going down that road. It might be possible to use some crazy combo to replicate the flavor. But it will take time and hard work. I'm curious now also

Seeing how I taste absolutely ZERO strawberries, I was wondering when I need strawberry, seeing how t contains tons of EM, could I just use em instead? And f so what %?

I have the same issue. I can never taste Strawberry until I tried INWEA's Shisha Strawberry. Mix at about 3%.

I now don't touch any other Strawberry.

2 points

by mully_mayhemover 8 years ago

No it won't taste like strawberries. EM should give you a cotton candy flavour at around 5-10ish%, but I hate the stuff so I've never tried mixing it at high percentages. I used to be a non taster or I'd get vapours tongue instantly until I used shisha and sucralose in a mix. I need to thank someone on here for mentioning adding sucralose to help nontasters of strawberry taste it but I can't remember who said it. Sorrys mods I know this isn't a recipe thread but I thought it's related to the conversation.

Ingredient|% :---|---: Dragonfruit (TPA)|0.5 Strawberry (Ripe) (TPA)|4 Strawberry (TPA)|3 Strawberry Shisha (INAWERA)|1 Sweetener (Sucralose) |.25-0.5

1 points

by iamnotmagritteover 8 years ago

I can't taste most strawberry either. And I really don't like the taste or Inawera shisha strawberry (too much hookah flavor for me), I find that substituting/adding between 0.5-1% of INW shisha strawberry will bring out the other strawberries. I think it might be because most other strawberries are too light and lack depth to work in recipes with other flavors, so they disappear in the background. I can taste them with no issue on their own though. So maybe try that, or if you don't mind the shisha flavor, substitute with a higher percentage.

Chocolate is tough man. It seems to be extremely subjective. I mean, taste is subjective in general, but people seem to have a really hard time with chocolate. Dark chocolate can be done with FA Cocoa (massive coil gunker). INW has some well respected chocolate flavors, including white. There was a flavor of the week thread here not to long ago covering chocolate, but honestly my recommendation is to buy sample sizes of a few different chocolates at BCF or ECX where they carry lots of different brands and try them. Here's that thread https://m.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/5grkwh/chocolate_this_weeks_fotw_is_chocolate/?ref=search_posts

Fw white chocolate is the only one that doesn't taste horrid.

u/ENYAWREKLAW posted a white chocolate peppermint bark recipe utilizing this flavor brilliantly.

Inw milk chocolate

Inw chocolate cream

HS Austrian chocolate

All three are fantastic and very smooth. I personally prefer HS over Inw for milk chocolate, but both are great. Chocolate cream is a bit bitter to me, light, mildly creamy, hints of butter or maybe cream cheese? I've not used it extensively as of yet.

u/ejuicemakers (atom I don't know your actual user name) Has a very nice chocolate cake recipe here that uses both Inw and HS.

Also, the user chewy over at elr has one of the best chocolate vapes I've ever tasted here

I am trying to stay away from FW due to their whole Yellow Cake fiasco!

My next order with INW will contain those flavours too, thanks for the recommendation! I will also look into getting the HS flavour as well as the BF flavour /u/mully_mayhem recommended.

This is why I have over 100 bloody flavours in my collection!

FW is great, but respect your avoidance of them as well.

So I'm wanting to get started into DIYing next month when I can afford to get all the necessary things. Is there a certain amount of PG, VG, and Nic I should get for starting off with? Also for Nic, is there a certain strength i should buy (i.e 36mg or 100mg)?

The hardware part I pretty much already got figured out, just the actual components of the juice I'm unsure of. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

4 points

by vardenslythaover 8 years ago

I mix from 36mg, but in Poland, where i live you can't get more, also 1l of VG and 1l of PG is cheap. Also very cruciual don't just go ahead and buy flavours you think you'll like, that will cause you won't be able to mix anything special, best way to start with them is to find 2-3 recepies that you think you'll like and order flavours for them, or look to sidebar to find most used flavours selected by redditers

2 points

by PygmyChildrenover 8 years ago

Oh okay that makes sense. I had planned to grab just a liter of both PG and VG, but I wasn't sure on how much nicotine to grab to mix with. I'm guessing maybe playing around with a calculator to see how I would use would be a good start.

I had also planned to look at the recommended flavors/recipes before purchasing any flavorings as I had no idea where to start from there. Thank you for some insight!

3 points

by vardenslythaover 8 years ago

I hink 200 - 300 ml of 36mg nic is enough with it if you will be mixing at 3-6 mg/ml

3 points

by goldfish18over 8 years agoWinner of the 1st DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

What ratio of vg to pg do you normally vape? If you mix 50/50 then one liter of each is fine. If you mix 7vg/30pg then you are going to need more vg than pg

2 points

by Boondocover 8 years ago

to expand on what /u/vardenslytha said, look at recipes and maximize your first order. find a profile you think you'll like and click on the link to the flavor and look at recipes that also use that flavor and find other common ingredients. the last thing you want to do when you're just starting it is buying a lot of single purpose flavors. one or two isn't that bad but if you have a recipe you think you'd like that uses several uncommon flavors, save that one for when you have a little bit more experience under your belt.

trust me, there's nothing more disappointing than buying a flavor for one recipe and finding out you don't like it. especially some of the more pricey ones.... looking at you flavorah

2 points

by PygmyChildrenover 8 years ago

Oh okay cool. I wasn't really thinking about how I should plan ahead and buy to be able create different recipes using the same flavors. Thanks a lot!

2 points

by iamnotmagritteover 8 years ago

I'll go against the others and say that you should get 100mg or 72mg nic (if your country allows that high concentration) in pg. It will last longer and you won't have to add as much. That small time saved will make mixing more enjoyable since it's one of the few things you'll likely to have to use a syringe or pipette for.

3 points

by harsskover 8 years ago

I'm staring out making juices and I read that to get the best flavor you need to steep the juice. What is the best way to do this? How do you do this? I read heat is good for it, living in az and having temps of 100+ would that be optimal for it?

4 points

by vardenslythaover 8 years ago

You really should not faststeep an ejuice, giving it time is the best way, think of it as wine or beer. You should steep your juices in dark place with room temperature, also if you have kids or pets in house you should be sure they can't reach it. Sometimes you would want the juice to breathe, what this means is that you should take the top cap off for specified time, but almost always recepies that benefit from that it is specified.

3 points

by harsskover 8 years ago

Why is fast steeping not recommended? Does the chemical activity change opposed to doing it the slow way?

7 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

When you expose the liquid to heat, the flavors and nicotine will degrade

1 points

by BassX97over 8 years ago

Just to add something before you hear about it like I did. Ultrasonic Cleaners used for speed steeping. Im hear to tell you its bullshit. Maybe it was a year ago but at some point people thought it was a legit shortcut but having used it myself, It degrades flavor. There is no shortcut besides the small one in heating your mix just slightly to give it a boost to homogenization (sp?) which is molecules blending together. That still requires you to steep it over time afterward however.

3 points

by ece_guyover 8 years ago

The trick is to get into a routine where you're mixing regularly. What I do for example, is mix a big batch once a month, or sometimes twice a month. Some liquids I let steep for at least a month. Meanwhile, the batch that I mixed from 2-4 weeks ago is ready to go.

Quick edit: It's tempting to taste your latest creations and by all means go for it, although I avoid it. But it can be useful as a testing method to see how a juice changes over the steeping process.

I don't know what type of juice you're trying to clone, but there is a good list of tobacco flavors here:

I'm not really making my own liquid, but i'd like to know how to add Nicotine into pre-existing e-liquid How many drops to say jump a 3mg to a 6mg? What are the expected effects, will the taste get worse? How do i mix it? Shake it up?

3 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

You don't want to use drops with nicotine.

3 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Yea drops are inaccurate, you'd need a syringe or scale.

The amount depends on the source nicotine and the volume of the juice. Common strengths are 36, 72 and 100 mg/ml. The stronger the source the less you need to add, and the less you'll dilute the flavor of the juice. Other than that, unless you get poor quality nicotine, it will not affect the flavor that much, only throat hit. Shaking is sufficient for mixing. Check out the sidebar for all the information you'll need on this.

I'm not a new mixer but I don't think this warrants opening a new thread. So i've been working on a Castle Long clone lately. Obviously some on the clones on here and ELR were an inspiration. But I tweaked it accordingly to fit my tastes and idea of what could be improved. My issue is this, the flavors don't seem to meld as well as I'll like them too. Sometimes, I'll get bourbon, other times some coconut, or toasted almond. Do I need to fine-tune the percentages further? Use MTS Vape Wizard? TFA Smooth? Help me out here.

Here's the recipe:

Castle Long Clone

  • TFA Kentucky Bourbon - 4.5%

  • TFA Toasted Marshmallow - 2%

  • TFA Red Oak - 2%

  • Capella French Vanilla - 2%

  • FA Vanilla Classic - 2%

  • Capella Toasted Almond - 2.5%

  • Capella Coconut - 2%

  • TFA Brown Sugar - 1%

  • TFA Acetyl Pyrazine - 0.5%

TFA Kentucky bourbon is obviously the base used in Castle Long. Toasted Marshmallow helps add that toastiness to the coconut and helps enhance the oak-barrel taste (when used in conjunction with Red Oak). Capella French Vanillc and FA Vanilla Classic, just because these 2 vanilla have worked for me in the past. Capella Toasted Almond because it's better than TFAs version. Capella Coconut because it doesn't taste like suntan lotion. TFA Brown Sugar for sweetness and acetyl pyrazine for that little extra bite.

Some flavours that I have considered include FA Brandy/FA Whisky (gives the kentucky bourbon some complexity). A smudge of TFA coconut extra (like 0.3% for added creaminess and to accentuate the coconut). Maybe Ethyl Maltol to help smooth out the harshness.

I would say drop the TFA Kentucky Bourbon to 2% and make up the difference with some FA whisky.

2 points

by thedirtyprojectorover 8 years agoMixologist

That might work. TFA Kentucky Bourbon fades to nothingness after a good steep. The FA Whisky might help make it more prominent. I'll give it a try when my paycheck comes in. Thanks

Hi Guys. I've ordered all my supplies so I can start making my own juice, vg, pg, nic, scales, bottle etc and a couple of flavour shots for me to try out and get me started. The thing is I've seen a recipe for a juice on e-liquid recipes called mother unicorn milk which I would love to try making as I love mother's milk. The problem is getting all the ingredients. 2 of them are available on vapour depo but the rest are out of stock. Is this a problem a lot of you have? Can you successfully use ingredients from different manufacturers in a recipe which lists them all from the same supplier? Any help will be much appreciated.

It won't taste the same if you use different brands. Have you looked around for any other vendors that have them in stock? Darkstar have all 5 in stock but the smallest bottles are 30ml.

oh wow never thought to check there, which I should of done as that's where i got all my vg, pg & nic. Thanks mate

edit: I've ordered all my concentrates. send me a photo of you so I can hang it on my wall :]

No problems mate, usually I wouldn't recommend getting 30ml bottles of concentrates because you might not enjoy the flavour but bavarian, strawberry ripe and cheesecake are pretty good concentrates used in a lot of other recipes. If you can spare the extra few bucks I suggest getting normal strawberry and dragonfruit to mix up God Milk, it's pretty damn good.

I'm in the same boat as you. I made my very first batches of juice yesterday and mother unicorn milk was one of them. I ordered my flavors from Gremlin DIY. Everything arrived within 3 days of ordering and their website was the easiest to find the flavors I wanted. I also looked at ecigexpress but found their site too cumbersome. I give Gremlin DIY 5 stars for customer service and selection of flavors available. prices are on point too.

You could try it without the nut ingredient and if it's only a tiny portion of the recipe, it probably won't make too much difference. Like if it's only 0.5% Hazelnut out of 14% total flavor. But since there are so many recipes, you can find plenty without any nut anything. Look up the recipe for Ginger Sauce. I love that one.

It's the Reddit official mobile app that does that. If you take too long to send your message because you're mentally impaired, have fat clumsy thumbs, or get interrupted or distracted in the middle of it, it posts as a top level comment instead of a reply. In my case all three so it happens often, but I usually catch it, delete it, and try again.

First post in this sub! Really have been wanting to take the dive into DIY and at times things around here look hectic and confusing with the percentages, etc but watching on YouTube with things going in by weight seems easy enough. I do have a solid budget to get into it, and spending time on some of the recommended sites from the sidebar also discouraged me, as far as what to order to get started. So, if someone is so kind as to let me know what to order and in what amounts, from start to finish! Any links to the reputable websites would be great Nd appreciated as well.

My flavor profiles are pretty open, I've really been enjoying the Cloudberry strawberry kiwi, as well as the chocolate glazed funnel cake, such good stuff. Anyhow, I know I'll need a scale, VG, PG, 100ml of 100 mg nic? And bottles as well as flavoring. I'd like to start off with easier recipes, but would like to order everything I'll need altogether. Any advice is highly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Tired of paying high prices on juice!

100mg nicotine isn't required. I've been mixing for about 6-7 months now and I always get 36mg strength or less.

On top of your list, I recommend adding cleaning supplies and disposable gloves. A clean environment is crucial, and if you're going to be handling high concentrations of nicotine, you need to protect yourself.

You can check the Verified Vendors list on where to get stuff, but I've only ordered from Ecigexpress and Bull City Flavors (I'm located in California)

talk a walk through the monthly recipe archive. it may see like a lot to take in but what i do is to hide all child comments and just browse the recipes themselves. then when i find something that looks interesting to me i'll read the comments and see who has said what about it.

i highly suggest grabbing this calculator to store the recipes you find that catch your interest in. it's very full featured and makes all the math involved easy. there is a bit of set up, like entering in flavors manually but after that it's a breeze and offers you some very powerful inventory management tools.

after you've got your prospective recipes in there you can use that to easily build a shopping list

Hey guys new to Reddit been lurking a while, but top level post and sidebar is gibberish to me.

So I'm wondering do some flavors come in glass or do I need to get glass bottles for flavors also. I haven't made my first order yet, but am really anticipating it.

Also was wondering if anyone would know a good strawberry watermelon recipe I could add to the flavor list. I'm wanting something like plume juices staw-wah it's pretty even with maybe more strawberry than watermelon. Don't really want a candyish watermelon. Recommendations on which of those two would play well together would be greatly appreciated. Haven't seen that kind of recipe really. Thanks.

i can answer your first question. 99.5% of the 10ml and 30ml you order will come in plastic bottles with tips that allow you to easily drop the concentrate into your mix like this. the only ones i know of so far that don't come like this are the 60ml and above and flavors from DIY Flavor Shack (which for some reason come in glass and charge you extra for a dripper bottle and even more so for plastic bottles).

I wanna start DIY, the only question is about mixing, the scale just seems easier and everything, is that true ? And where can I find out how to measure everything for 3mg juices

3 points

by Vurveover 8 years agoVurve with the Swurve

Using a scale is far superior to using syringes.

There is no cleanup involved, no chance of cross contamination of your flavors, a lot less waste product (syringes go bad and pipette droppers are generally 1-2 time use only).

/u/ID10-T already nailed all the different mixing websites, so go check those out.

I do most of my mixing in my head, but if I ever want to double check my math, I use All The Flavors.

Yes, it is easier and there is less clean-up involved. You use a calculator to convert your percentages into grams

2 points

by ID10-Tover 8 years ago

Yes, that's widely regarded as true, although there are a number of people who still prefer using syringes. You can find out how to measure everything by using an ejuice calculator such as one of these:

So Long time reader first time poster. I have a double qustion (I know I'm cheating ;) ) 1st. I have a recipe I'm really liking but I feel like the Flavor percents are too high how can I keep its rich flavor but bring down the total percent of flavor.

Coffee Time (LB) Cappuccino 10% (LB) Sweetner 5%

I know its simple but it just has a great taste.

Question 2 I've done a bit of research on this but what cereal flavors do you guys like to mix with.

3 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

1 - Just scale it down linearly, try cutting them all in half and see what happens. Odds are it will taste exactly the same.

2 - Can't help you there, but I hear good things of Flavor West's cereals. Try searching.

2 points

I've tried some but all I taste is cardboard, haha! I got FW Fruit Rings in the last order, haven't had time to play with it yet though.

1 points

by DIY405over 8 years ago

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad to know you don't think it will suffer from a reduction. I was just afraid that if i cut it I'd lose the flavor and like basically waste some Flavoring. But a little waste for a reduction would save flavors in the long run.

1 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

For reference, most of my recipes are around 5-6% total flavoring and taste just as much as 15-20%. Sometimes it may seem like you lose a bit of the flavor at first, but it's actually the over flavoring that is gone.

Going low does save money, but my primary reason for doing it is vapers tongue, olfactory fatigue. With over flavored juice you may get a flavor punch on your first few hits, and while this may seem nice, it will rapidly dull your senses and for the rest of the day, you'll actually get less flavor than from a low percentage mix. There are more reasons, but just know that it's worth experimenting with trying to find the lower limit of a mix. If it does end up too weak, it isn't wasted, just add a little more flavoring.

2 points

by runnbl3over 8 years ago

how long is your usual steep time on new mixes?

4 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Fruits and berries are usually good right away, some may need a day or two for off notes to calm down. A lot of creams need a week to develop fully, but some are much quicker. For more complex flavors such as desserts, tobaccos etc you'll need 2-3 weeks to bring out the finer notes. There's no harm in trying a juice right after mixing, just know that the more complex profiles will change a lot over time.

Note that higher VG and some particular brands require longer steep.

I recently ordered flavors from TFA(finally bit the bullet)

I have done my research but im still a little lost. Id appreciate some words of wisdom from the veterans here.

I order strawberry ripe, watermelon, dragon fruit and koolada. I also won the vapewild giveaway ealrier so i have vg/pg. I really wanted to try single flavour profiles.

I also have a scale that does 1/100th of a gram and a few 30ml bottles from vapewild and two syringes. I also have sweetner from them, something id like to avoid.

I tried searching on ejuice recipes website but its overwhelming how many recipes there are.

Just to give an idea, i am looking for something to replicate m3 from northland vapor. I cant find the clone recipe for that.

So my question is, can you guys suggest some recipes for the aforementioned juices. Id prefer each to have Koolada. Feel free to tell me to take my post somewhere else if needed.

Thank you.

Hope i can cut my expenses with this venture.

Does Acetyl Propionyl set off smoke alarms? My Plum Smugglin, which contains TFA Toasted Marshmallow, has set off two different smoke alarms in my house. Or is it something else or coincidence or fluke?

7 points

yea i thnk most alarms are set off by vapor. i think some types shoot a laser or other type of beam and if that gets interrupted by smoke or vapor for a moment, then the alarm is triggered.

not all smoke alarms work this way and idk if many home fire alarms incorporate this or not but any time i vape next to the smoke detector on the mantle: that shit gets set off

Also when you enter your concentrates on ELR make sure that they're the most popular version of that concentrate. I know there is probably 15 different TPA Strawberry ripe on ELR because people are allowed to add in any concentrate. And some who are lazy keep making duplicates rather than finding the proper flavor page. So when you enter a duplicate into your stash, you won't have access to the recipes when you click "what can I make". Because that strawberry ripe in your flavor stash could be used for only a hundred recipes as opposed to the proper strawberry ripe listing which is used in 130,000+ recipes.

2% pear. 0.5% coconut. 1-3% bavarian cream in 50/50 sorry for the formatting im being a lazysavage

2 points

by funkmunk3yover 8 years ago

This seems super-low, all the other recipes I've seen have the pear / creme @ like 6 to 8%... I'm dying to get the mix of this right (I still buy it from Seduce - it's my weakness). All of the combinations I've tried are missing the thick, sugary sweetness - it always comes out w/ a harder, citrus-y pear flavor even after 2 weeks of steeping. Will a lower flavor % help it?

Thank in advance.

1 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

I think TFA reformulated pear. Ive seen an old comment saying so and mentioning to lower the percentage. That shit is strong. I don think ive ever used more than 4% and had to dial it back though.... I might be sensitive to taste.

furthermore It also depends on your gear. A lot of those recipes were written at a time when low wattage clearo's were the norm. That meant higher percentages.

Also your intended goal makes a difference. Do you need to make a mix thats going to taste good 2-6 weeks from now? or do you really need something right the fuck now? If the latter your best bet would be to mix something that tastes good and maybe needs more flavor in the long run or a cpl day to a week for the creams to... cream.

Hence the 50/50 its mad shakeable and "carries" flavor better. You prolly need more flavor for higher VG mixes

I think SJ uses sucralose bc snake oil gelatinizes. Could be a combo of creams... kinda doubt it though. TFA whipped cream maybe? IDK whatever is in whip it by one hit wonder cld also work

They also say no diketones so snake oil was probably also reformulated from bav cream v1.

Ive never actually used v1 (bavarian cream) but have it sitting on my desk at home. That's why you see me say 1-3%. That was the alright spot for v2.

edit: clarification

Does anybody else sometimes get, of all things, cinnamon notes from lime flavorings? I recently mixed Shurb v4 (tfa key lime) and Pebbles (cap lemon lime) and I'll be damned if I don't get hints of cinnamon from both. I /suspect/ the limes but haven't fully investigated thoroughly.

PS, does anybody else get a green, slightly starchy/tannic banana flavor from freshly (2 days) mixed Pebbles?

3 points

by HashSlingingSlashurover 8 years ago

I've not gotten this taste. Tasted at 1 day, 3 days, and 5 days. Have not gotten to test further, I left a bottle steeping while I'm in Vegas. Just mixed it up like a week ago and it's my first time trying the juice. It's reminiscent of fruity pebbles but not super spot on (this is all based on 5 days of steeping). Definitely not getting banana notes.

1 points

by VeganPropagandistover 8 years ago

Maybe my taste buds are just fuckered, but I'm still getting cinnamon from Shurb yet it's fading from Pebbles. Still getting slightly unripe, tannic bananas from Pebbbles. If I didn't know better I would swear there was a banana flavor present. Senses are bullshit.

When you guys are developing a recipe how are you going about it when you decide you need another half percent or one percent of a flavor? I mean, you mixed, you dripped, you thought, you decided. Do you figure you have 8ml left and add your additional flavor based on that or do you mix a whole new bottle with the new percentage?

It's that something you do throughout the recipe development?

3 points

by Boondocover 8 years ago

new mix. adding i flavors all willy nilly mid bottle is a recipe for disaster

1 points

by ChevelloKDover 8 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

I figured, but I wasn't sure. I thought maybe there was a magical calculation people are doing.

1 points

by Boondocover 8 years ago

not really. theoretically you can measure your bottle before and after you fill it and the difference will be the weight of your mix. you can then use the weight after you've been sampling to find out how much is left and then do some math shit to it to find out the percent left.

in reality you'll probably just come up with adding more of Y flavor helped and adjust the percentage to whatever degree for you next mix.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Just to see if a flavor would work in a mix you can add to it. But doing this you're already pretty sure how it will turn out since you know that flavor well enough through solo testing and/or extensive use. The result may still come as a surprise from time to time, it's just an educated guess.

If it works, perhaps after some fine-tuning, you only have a rough estimate of percentage and outcome after steep, so you need to make a fresh mix and try again for your notes to be accurate. And be sure to take notes every step of the way.

The important point is to know your flavors. Adding a flavoring that you've never used before to a mix with a bunch of other flavorings is pretty pointless. It probably won't work that well and you learn nothing from it.

Make small batches, like 10 ml, and just vape through it after every modification until you know what it did, or toss it and start over if it was bad. If it isn't worth vaping 10 mls of, you're on the wrong track anyway. About halfway through the batch, you should have a pretty clear idea of what change to make for the next iteration.

1 points

by ChevelloKDover 8 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

I've made 10 ml 5% 50/50 testers of most of my flavors and have been spending my evenings going through them so that I can get an accurate idea of how they all work on my palate.

But mainly while fooling around with the testers I didn't change my wick between two of them and found a weird combination that was really good so I'm trying to work it into a real recipe. Just didn't know what the best process for "it needs a little more of this one, maybe a little less of that one" was. Thanks!

1 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Sounds about right, a lot of great recipes spawn from random discoveries :)

Finding a good balance is just trial and error and the less interference from other flavors the better. Tossing five or six ingredients into a mix while trying to balance two of them will make this very hard. Figure out the balance, then add one flavor at a time and find that balance.

I don't understand what you mean by "pour anything"

What got me really thinking about it was listening to Beginner Blending and they were live mixing. I didn't know if there is a way to really get the percentages of the mix or if was just a hey, made a cool bottle of liquid and I'll vape through it and forget about it kind of thing.

What is your total average % of flavorings?

10%? 15%? 20%?

4 points

by HashSlingingSlashurover 8 years ago

Usually 5-10% ... Sometimes I go up to 15 or 20 but it's not often. Some flavors are just weaker than others so you have to take that into account as well. As you get more comfortable making your own blends you realize it doesn't really matter as long as your final product is what you want it to be. If I could make my juice taste good with 1% flavoring I would but it's mostly impossible. I tend to build a recipe and ignore the total flavor % ... Just make sure what you're doing is balanced, whether that means adding or taking away something. Trial and error is going to be your best teacher, don't focus on these % because you will be limiting yourself. Get a good grasp on the flavors you own and you will get into your own groove of things.

I need to mix some tobacco flavoured juice for my dad. Fast. He now mainly vapes pre-made tobacco e-juice (claimed to be made from natural essences) through high-ohm devices (Ego One, Endura, Siren GTA), 12 mg juice.

Right now I have TPA RY4 Double and TPA Black Honey on my hands, but I don't have any experience with them. And I don't have much time to experiment and make my own conclusions about them.

From what I've found, everyone seems to use RY4 Double very differently. Many use it at whopping 10-12%^(what?), and claim that this is a perfect percentage. But some mixers use it at 2-3% (although these are mostly not tobacco-mainly recipes).

So, what should I gor for? I have a lot of other flavours, but only these two tobaccos. I need a nice tobacco recipe to go well with high-ohm-low wattage coils.

Any suggestions?

I'm no tobacco head, but I picked up FLV Kentucky Blend recently based on it's rep for not needing a long steep. 3% seems like the sweet spot, 2-3 day steep.

It scratches my tobacco itch pretty well, but I'd like to hear from the great /u/t_mace for his suggestions for your dad.

As far as using TFA RY4D, search for Rocketpuppy's RY4D recipe. It does need a month or more, but I always have a bottle of it ready.

Thanks! I actually have all these flavors, accept bourbon, but I wouldn't add it anyway since my father is an ex-alcoholic. 5% of RY4 looks like an adequate percentage too. Thanks again.

Are you willing to buy other flavors for tobacco. RY4 Double doesn't really taste like tobacco at all, even though it's still a nice flavor. TPA Black Honey would be used best at low percents as a topping in a flavored cigar vape. So if you want "real tobacco taste" then you'll need to buy a few more flavors.

FLV Kentucky is a fantastic tobacco stand alone which imparts real tobacco feel. FLV Red Burley is another great stand alone tobacco with some balls. Of course, both can be mixed. INW Dark For Pipe is great too, add in low percents to get some leafyness. If you need more options let me know, I'm rushing off to work atm.

> Rocketpuppy's RY4D

I think this is the version coop is referring too.. He subbed Bourbon Vanilla for Madagascar but btw Bourbon Vanilla is not an alcohol flavor. I'm in a rush but can link you an article about vanilla later.

...and thank you for suggesting Red Burley, just added it to my wishlist. I am very happy with Kentucky, and from your review I'm pretty sure RB will be great too, maybe "the one" =)

1 points

by T_Maceover 8 years agoresident tobacco specialist

RB is in my top 5ish favorites. More cigar than cigarette but you can bend it towards a ciggy if you like. I mix TFA Western 3%, FLV Red Burley 3% and INW Dirty Neutral Base 1% for less cigar style. It needs a month steep minimum, no exceptions. It's still not a perfect cig tho and needs some reworking but it's interesting none the less. Even if you don't like it, all 3 flavors will serve you well for tobacco ingredients so I wouldn't hesitate to buy.

EDIT: TFA Western is a wildcard but worth messing with. It has this leathery note hidden in it that I love.

If your dad is a tobacco head, RY4 Double probably isn't going to do it for him. It's not really a straight up tobacco flavor. It's more like if you dipped the tobacco in vanilla and caramel and just used those. It's still delicious as all hell, though

Hi, I'm super new to this but I'll tell you what I want and hopefully someone can tell me if it's viable.

I'd like a pretty barebones fluid, that I can make cheaply, and get some foot clouds with. Not sure if I want to mess with flavors yet. I saw something about using 80% glyco and 20% water to make fluid, but a user on r/Vaping101 said that was a bad idea. What would I need to make the kind of fluid I want?

5 points

by iamnotmagritteover 8 years ago

You just want big clouds? No nic, no flavor? Just get a bottle of vegetable glycerin and vape that.

1 points

by PM_ME_UR_AZ_TEAover 8 years ago

Are there any health risks to that?

Edit: I did some googeling and found that VG can reduce the lifetime of the pen. Could I use 50% VG and 50% PG? What's the difference?

6 points

What mod are you using? If you are using a pen then you won't be blowing foot clouds

1 points

by iamnotmagritteover 8 years ago

If you're using an ego style pen you won't get much clouds going. Depending on the pen, you could do between 70/30 - 50/50 vg/pg. But that won't give you much cloud production, about half or less than you'd get from a regular cigarette (to give a comparison).

Hello guys new here, been off the nasty's for 8 days this time. Had a question for yall. Found something that's close to what I'm wanting for my adv, til my taste buds fully come back its 8% candy cane fw, 1.5% peppermint cap and tfa (that way I can SnV plus steep and alternate) and koolada 10% at 1drop per 3ml, with 2-3mg nic at a 85ish vs (pg issues) now my question is, can I add something to give it a creamier texture without adding too much flavor and still keep in line the peppermint (red and white) candy theme. I do have some Bavarian cream, butter cream, vanilla custard, milk, and sugar cookies, all fw if that helps. Sorry for the wall of text and have a great day all!

I'm just getting into the mixing game and while I can find reviews on the more popular flavors (like Strawberry and Vanilla) I'm having issues finding reviews on others. The primary flavors I'm after are caramel and lychee. I'm given to understand that the TFA lychee tastes like "burnt feet" and most of what I can find on this sub about caramel is years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1 points

by ID10-Tover 8 years ago

Have you seen the caramel and lychee Flavor of the Week posts and looked at the Flavor Review Wiki for info on caramel and lychee flavors?

2 points

by Smeggywulffover 8 years ago

I did. While there are helpful recipes, there is not much information on flavors produced by any one manufacturer. One person used a type of lychee in their recipe, which I took as approval of that brand, but in their post history they were later critical of the same flavor. What I would really like are flavor reviews, but I understand those are rare. Even someone saying "Use this! It doesn't taste like feet!" Would be great. I found one lychee review that's several years old and apparently the company changed the flavor since then. The flavor reviews of caramel I've found here have been "tastes like burnt sugar" and "tastes like brown sugar, not caramel", which means I'm still looking for info/reviews.

Edit: Is there a way to filter what is shown so that only flavor reviews are shown? I know that in other subs it's easy to filter by flair, but I can't seem to find a way to do it on this one. Searching has been well exhausted.

All of the real, in-depth flavor reviews that aren't ancient are on the wiki; it's a work in progress with new ones being added every day. Are you using Reddit's search function?

by bogey_againover 8 years ago

Have you been to ELR from here you can type in your flavor - then sort by recipes. You will then see how they are rated, how often they are used and get multiple peoples opinion on the flavor from the "notes" section. However I do not recommend their Average quantity used % but that's just me. I find less is more.

Hi. I placed an order with DIY FlavorShack and they tossed in a small bottle of "Holy Holy Grail RY4". I'm just now making my first batches of juice - ever. Love custards so starting there. I've seen a recipe called "custard king" on e-liquid recipe (more of a RY4 but I'm making it cause it looks easier than most). that recipe calls for 8% TPA double RY4. Does anyone know if I can sub 8% of the DIY flavorshack for the TPA. As a general matter how do most people figure out what percentages to add to various juices?

5 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

For lesser known flavor brands, always consult the vendor/manufacturer. As for figuring out the percentages, you just need to know how strong they are and how you want them to work in your recipe.

Noob here. I love menthol vapes so I bought some koolada, menthol and eucalyptus from nicotine river to add to premade juices. When I add a few drops of menthol the juice is making the plastic pieces and orings expand in my subtanks (uwell se-1 and tfv4). Any idea why this is happening? The vape isn't even close to as strong as mtbaker's extreme ice and that juice doesn't change the physical characteristcs of these pieces in the tanks.

Mixing with several different premade juices in 10ml bottles with 10 drops max of menthol or koolada.

Thanks for any help

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Unheard of afaik, menthol is known to destroy plastics but this would be permanent and shouldn't happen at this low concentration. If you could post a picture before and after, that might shed some light.

Did you increase the wattage by any chance?

I am pretty new at mixing my own recipes and I am trying to clone the "Just Jam" strawberry jam liquid. I tried INW S̀hisha Strawberry and TFA Strawberry Ripe:

  • DX Sweet Cream (TPA) 2%
  • Strawberry (Ripe) (TPA) 3%
  • Strawberry Shisha (INAWERA) 3%
  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (TPA) 1%

The strawberry-part tastes good, but it is completely missing the jam-part. Any good pointers on how to achieve that?

I was thinking about adding some FA Orange at 1% and substituting the VBIC and Sweet Cream with Fresh Cream while adding some sweetener. Maybe FA Custard could work, too.

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

For a juice called Just Jam, I'm wondering what the purposes of the VBIC and Sweet Cream are in there. I think you need to take those out.

2 points

by audaxxxover 8 years ago

I wanted to soften the aftertaste of Shisha Strawberry and give it some creaminess in the exhale.

I'll test the strawberries on their own and with different amounts of sweetener. Maybe the original just has a ton of sweetener and that's what makes it work…

Just Jam is definitely not an ADV, it's way too sweet for that.

3 points

by Boondocover 8 years ago

try lowering the amount of strawberry ripe. it may be washing out the jammyness that shisha strawberry brings

2 points

by mysticrosellover 8 years ago

I would for sure remove the creams, jam doesn't have any. Try to think of ingredients you would use in making a real jam. .25-.5% FA Liquid Amber might help the fruit taste a little cooked like it does when you make it into a jam. I would also consider adding just a touch of lemon. Most jams and pie fillings have some lemon in there.

1 points

by audaxxxover 8 years ago

FA Liquid Amber is a great suggestion, I've put it on my list for my next order. For the lemon I'll try INW Lemon at 0.5% and another tester with FA Lemon Silicy. Maybe I even have to lower the percentage on that even more.

Thanks!

There might not be a solid answer to this question:

So, I've tried both Purilum and Flavor Arts so far, been having good success mixing single flavors at 10%.

However, say I have a 2 flavor mix I want to do, each as a single flavor is good at 10%.

Do I start my 2 flavor mix using 10% of each, 5% of each, or is it entirely dependent on other factors? How would 3 flavors work? 10% 10% 10% or 3% 3% 3% for example?

I understand that flavors can be stronger or weaker than others and need adjustments to reach the flavor I'm really trying to make - I'm just wondering what's a recommended starting point.

2 points

by coop34over 8 years ago

Broad question, but try here first. If you don't see what you are looking for try here or here.

Purilum is pretty new, so you may not find much there, Review it yourself, help us out by posting your results!!

3 points

by crimsonBZDover 8 years ago

Well so far, I have FA and Purilum, and I see no reason to use FA anymore.

TBH, I could continue using Purilum (I got the full flavor pack 10mL) in single flavor mixes indefinitely.

Just their "heaven" flavor concentrate alone is very very good.

Thank you for the links though I'll check them out now.

*edit: just looking basically at what they're saying, it seems like there really is no good single answer to my question, it's going to be about the flavors themselves and what's all being mixed together.

I think I probably need to steep my juices longer, a lot of the time I'll mix something like 6% 6% two flavors, and after the fact it tastes like nothing at all.

5 points

by coop34over 8 years ago

FA (Flavourarts to be clear) has lots of great flavors. Very concentrated, so if you are at 10% that would explain why you don't like them very much. Experiment some more using the % from some reviews, you may be surprised.

Ok so I took the plunge today. the last of what I needed to get started was delivered today and I mixed up 105mls of juice - three 30ml bottles and one 15ml bottle. Unfortunately I'm a custard lover and now I have to wait a month or so to see if I'll like any of the recipes. Any thoughts on certifiable shake and vape recipes I should try? I'm not big into straight fruity vapes but I'm ok with a fruit component.

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

Custards require a longer steep time but I wouldn't say they require a month. Tobaccos definitely might, though. Depending on the flavors you are working with, they should be good to go after 2-3 weeks. I don't know what flavors you have so I can't recommend anything for you yet.

So far I mixed Kreeds Custard, Grant Vanilla Custard My way, Custard King (a creamy RY4) and Mothers Unicorn Milk. It looks like all 4 of the recipes I decided to try first need steeping. I'd love to try a shake and vape just to get a sense of what DIY juices are all about.

My list of what I ordered is below. As you can see I'm more a cream/custard/dessert person, but I'm open to try anything. A chunk of the flavors I purchased specifically to mix a clone of Gremlin VC. There's a famous Gremlin clone recipe here on reddit that I'm going to follow.

Holy Holy Vanilla (FS) Bavarian Cream (TPA)
Biscuit (INW) Cake (Yellow) (FW) Cheesecake (Graham Crust) (TPA) Cinnamon Sugar Cookie (TPA) French Vanilla (Cap) Graham Cracker Clear (TPA) Malted Milk (TPA) Meringue (FA) Natural Banana(LA) Natural Blueberry (LA) Natural Raspberry (LA) New York Cheesecake (Cap) Orange Cream (TPA) Raspberry (TPA) Raspberry Sweet (TPA) RY4 Double (TPA) Strawberry (Ripe) (TPA) Strawberry (TPA) Sugar Cookie (Cap) Sweet Cream (TPA) Vanilla Custard (TPA) Vanilla Custard V1 (Cap) Vanilla Swirl (TPA)

Most custards and bakeries need a few weeks to steep so for a shake and vape I would go with a fruit type of mix. Maybe try looking at your flavors on ELR and look at their average usage percentage and mix 2 or 3 fruits together that sound good at the lower end of those suggested percentages.

I've been vaping/mixing for just a couple months, I wanted to mix up 8-25 more 500mL bottles of juices to have a surplus while I figure things out. Three coworkers switched to vaping during this time and I've been supplying them with at-cost DIY juice and doing orders for them on equipment. I've directed them to also check out local shops and purchase juice and equipment but they haven't made the trip. I'm quite happy to DIY juice, since I can order flavoring in bulk quantities and save everyone including myself some money. I'm hoping to get over this step quickly so I can start into the actual art of making my own recipes. I am far away from where all concentrates are able to be easily obtained for reasonable prices, so I have to make a large order from a faraway land to make it worthwhile. So my question is: What 8-25 recipes would /u/ID10-T make large amounts of that others would probably enjoy?

Keep things clean and you're fine. Germs don't thrive in these liquids, but washing your hands and perhaps taking some extra precautions if you live in a very hot and humid environment won't hurt.

On a side note, if things taste terrible, try simpler recipes with less flavoring, that should help.

I'm looking for a killer mango flavor. The best I've had was some random company selling eGos and cig-a-likes called Buck Naked, it was so good I could practically feel the fruit fibers on my tongue. I'm still fairly new to DIY, so I haven't tried anything beyond what Wizard Labs had for sale, all of which were pretty lousy. Does anyone know of a really, really, ridiculously good-tasting mango flavor or recipe?

FLV Mango, 4 to 6% standalone. Perfect mango nectar flavor. For more of that fleshiness, add 1% or less CAP Sweet Mango to it.

Super Concentrates Mango, which you can get from BCF or Vaping Zone, tastes even better IMO, but you have only about two days to vape up whatever you mix because the flavor fades out super fast.

INW Mango is just plain weird and tastes nothing like a mango, TFA Mango tastes too earthy like it has literal dust or dirt in it, CAP Sweet is rottenly oversweet by itself, TFA Philippine is weak had has a hairspray note to it, FA is okay but dry and gets perfumy real easy, JF Mango tastes kinda like an extra concentrated TFA Philippine minus the hairspray but with a very inauthentic candyish aspect to it, and HS Mango tastes good but it's almost like a single-flavor mango smoothie, which doesn't sound like what you're looking for if you want a bold, fresh fruit flavor.

New to DIY. A few questions.

  1. Mixed my first batches on the 18th. Made "simple sugar cookies" and others. Is it normal for the juice to taste "crappy" (for lack of a better word) until it's steeped for a week or more? Or should it be "ok" when mixed and then get a little better each day?

  2. I vape mostly custards but since DIY is so cheap I'd like to try some fruit vapes including fruit and koolada. anyone have recommendations for fruit recipes I can try that are not "too fruity"?

thanks.

1.) i don't know about crappy but yes some profiles, especially bakery and custards take time to "meld" together.

2.) belikegrouch's Juicy J's Strapple Mint. 100% shake and vape but give it a week and it's fucking awesome. all of the ingredients are also widely used in a lot of highly ranked recipes so even if you don't have them already, you'll more than likely end up with them anyway.

also I picked up a bottle of "Super Strong Menthol Drops" from DIY Flavor Shack - I planned on using it to mix up some juice for my friend who turned me on to vaping and she vapes menthol juices a lot. Would something like that work in the recipe?

either one of those would work. i've never used anything diyfs so i couldn't comment on percentage. for both the koolada and menthol subs i'd start at the recommended percentage and work your way up or down as you see fit.

Steeping can turn good into great but never bad into good. What you will notice over time is that some sharp and offensive notes will diminish, and finer nuances develop in the more complex flavors. Some mixes can seem a bit weird though, neither bad nor good, until it's starting to come together.

Check the monthly threads for recipes, there are always some gems in there.

thanks. I guess rather than "crappy" I should have sad taste "not good". It's not harsh or anything like that - just not tasty yet. I'm sure a part of it is my impatience. I somehow got it in my mind that once I get my supplies and mix up some juice I'd be vaping my own tasty juices within a day. It's only been in the bottle almost two days. I'll just shake it everyday and leave it alone for two weeks. I'll have to get over wanting to taste my mixes until they are ready to be tasted. Most of what I mixed had CAP VC1 as a component. Everything I've read says you have to give VC a good steep. Was just hoping a sugar cookie would be shake and vape - but it's not.

1 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

I'm terribly impatient and prefer recipes that are ready the second I'm done shaking. VC1 and Sugar Cookie can work right away as supporting notes, but if the main profile of a recipe relies on the steep, you'll have to wait.

What's the best type of bottle for steeping? Does it make a blind bit of difference?

At the B&M yesterday when someone said that my Cobalt Blue bottle was going to have a tough time steeping as the light won't get in, I'd never really thought this to be of much importance - so do bottles make any difference?

4 points

by Vurveover 8 years agoVurve with the Swurve

By and large, it's not going to make a huge difference.

If you are going to mix half liter batches though, I would probably keep it in a glass or PET container.

120ml or less, just mix it into your final bottle, screw the top on, and go set it in your cabinet.

3 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

I prefer plastic for ease of use, but glass is best since it prevents finer molecules from seeping through the plastic, the plastic from seeping into the liquid, etc.

Steeping in a dark place at room temperature with an air tight cap is far more important however.

To clarify, UV light does bad things to these liquids. It causes flavorings to lose their flavor, nicotine to turn harsh and PG to form carcinogenic substances to name a few. The irony is that cobalt blue is bad at filtering out UV light, so the B&M was actually correct in that blue bottles are bad, but for the complete opposite reason.

How sensitive to heat are we talking here? I've got most of my juice on a shelf in my computer cupboard which is a little warmer when it's on and my big bottles of concentrate/PG/VG next to the computer which I would say is warm. Am I making a big mistake here?

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Room temperature is fine, but I wouldn't go above 30°C/85°F. The warmer it gets the faster things degrade.

by Boondocover 8 years ago

light not getting in is a good thing. i've recently moved to glass bottles for steeping but i'm not sure if it's having a noticeable difference yet. i'm mostly using them for recipes with multi-week/month long steeps.

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

What's listed on the bottle is fine, the difference would be in the flavorings. There's no telling how they've been produced just by looking at the bottle, you'd need an MSDS from the manufacturer to really say anything for sure.

Edit: Ignore my feeble attempts at understanding what a carbohydrate is, lol.

Expect them to be reluctant in sharing anything that isn't on their homepage, but ask for an MSDS (material safety data sheet) and if the flavor is water soluble, if essential oils were distilled, if it contains any sugars. Here is a good indication of some of the things to watch out for.

Orange Juice Pack

  • 1% (FW) Blood Orange

  • 1% (TPA) Cotton Candy

  • 6% (FW) Ecto Cooler Type

  • 0.5% (CAP) Juicy Lemon

  • 3% (CAP) Sweet Tangerine

  • 1.5% (TPA) Sweetener

I mixed this yesterday and while it is tasty, it has a very dry exhale. Any ideas how I could fix that? I am want to get a hint of dry/bitter orange peel taste on the exhale, but it's a bit too much now. I can't scale down the Ecto Cooler because it's very important for the inhale, I just want to counter the dryness.

Could the solution be to just add even more sweetener? My reference juice for that is the Element Fresh Squeeze Dripper, but I don't want to exactly clone it. They nailed the exhale flavors on that one.

5 points

by hatsoffandjacksoffover 8 years ago

I don't have experience with the flavors you're working with so someone might chime in that it's unique to one you're using but if I want a fruity recipe to be wetter on the exhale I usually use .25-.5% of Inawera Cactus

2 points

by audaxxxover 8 years ago

Good suggestion, I'll put that on my list!

2 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

Its probably dry from all the terpenes in the citrus flavors.

Cactus can work but so could Strawberry flavors.

You could always cut the sweetener and use like twice as much cotton candy in hopes that the EM will smooth out those rough flavors.

1 points

by audaxxxover 8 years ago

It was the Blood Orange mostly. I updated to recipe to

  • 0.5% (FW) Blood Orange

  • 12% (FW) Ecto Cooler Type

  • 0.5% (CAP) Juicy Lemon

  • 1.5% (TPA) Marshmallow

  • 2% (CAP) Sweet Tangerine

  • 1.5% (TPA) Sweetener

So I essentially dropped the blood orange and tangerine down and introduced Marshmallow as a sweetener while compensation for the loss of blood orange with more Ecto Cooler. 12% might seem excessive, but it is a rather weak flavor and I've seen upvoted recipes with 15% of it. I also mixed it at max VG (82%).

Now I can make a bunch more testers of this with a bit more blood orange to get a bit more of the orange peel taste, without the dryness. Also, I am out of Sweet Tangerine…

I'm hoping you dudes will be willing to take a look at my first order spreadsheet.

Link to spreadsheet: http://imgur.com/a/VsOEr

I've done a fair amount of research, though it seems impossible to do a 'sufficient' amount of research, so I'm using this as a starting point. I'll be mixing by weight, and have a few essentials at home (nitrile gloves, funnels, etc.) and are not included in the list.

I created accounts on ATF and ELR, and used the information there to select my first 26 flavors, cross referencing which of those can be used in initial simple recipes I'd like to try, but would be open to suggestions for additions based on what is listed there.

By selecting a gallon of VG from wizard labs, it brings my total to just above $65, which I think qualifies for free shipping. Nicotine I'm getting from Carolina Extract, and everything else I'm getting from Amazon (I have prime). Am I forgetting anything? Is there anything I'm not getting that I absolutely should while I'm still considering initial cost? Thanks in advance, this subreddit has been a great resource so far, and I'm sure it will continue to be as a result of your hard work and generosity!

3 points

by Apexifiedover 8 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

That's some comprehensive research. My only suggestion would be to switch over to Nicotine River. WL is going to give you all those 8ml concentrates in little glass vials, and for the same price (or less) you can get 10ml bottles from Nic River which are much better for mixing by weight. Also a gallon of VG will be 13.99 there instead of 26.99. You'll save a bit and get more overall.

I'm about to sound like a shill but you could basically put everything from your spreadsheet in your cart at Nic River and get it all in one package for less ¯\(ツ)

2 points

by all_those_wordsover 8 years ago

That's great info, thanks! I used Wizard Labs kind of arbitrarily to build the spreadsheet, mostly because it was listed in one of the spreadsheets in a sidebar link. I'll take a look at Nicotine River and probably switch over the flavors and VG, if not the others.

Would you recommend still getting the nicotine from Carolina Extracts, or does Nicotine River also produce a high quality product? I think with 100mg/ml strength it will last a long time, and I want something that will not degrade quickly.

2 points

by Apexifiedover 8 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Carolina is absolutely superior but NR sells Nic Select which is not bad at all and will hold up fine if stored properly. If I were you I'd throw a 120ml in your cart and order Carolina sometime down the road. But if you don't mind putting out the extra shipping costs, there's no reason not to get CXT.

Hi.

like you, I'm brand new to mixing. my first flavors looked very similar to yours. mine was more cream/vanilla/custard heavy as that's my profile.

I'll give you my perspective based on one week of mixing. your list seems really good for a first time list. really good you were able to do it for only $65. my scale alone was $35 or so, also with the free amazon prime shipping. my first flavor order was $75 - some of that cost was for odd one off flavors I need for a Gremlin VC clone recipe.

I purchased nic and pg/vg from liquid barn. I made the mistake of getting a 250 ml bottle of VG. I've already ordered a gallon from Amazon (free shipping).

I'd say DIY is pretty much like vaping in general. as you go along you find yourself picking up more and more stuff.

here's a couple items I found I needed pretty much immediately after my first mix: a couple more syringes. the aforementioned gallon of VG. a second batch of flavors. As I dove deeper into the recipes and actually started mixing I realized my first order didn't include some of the basics for my flavor profile (VBIC for one). I blew through my sample size CAP VC1 in no time. Ordered the 4oz bottle this time around (I LOVE custards). A nail polish storage rack - to be used for my flavors. Once you have those 25 or so 15ml bottles of flavor you'll find what a pain it is to peck and search for the one you need. you'll need some sort of organizing system for them. your stash of flavors is going to grow - quickly. some sort of labeling system for you mixes is going to be needed too. for now I have some standard avery labels but down the road I'm going to get a label printer. even though the juices are just for me, I know my handwritten scribble labels (I've had poor handwriting my entire life) are going to annoy me. do a reddit search for bottle labeling and flavor storage to get an idea of what other people use. I think those 5 tier acrylic nail polish racks will work best for me.

Another vote for the nail polish storage rack. Just started DIY this weekend but I don't know what I'd do without this thing; $8 well spent. I have everything loaded on here in alphabetical order. Plenty of room to expand as I accumulate more flavors.

question and a comment.

where did you find a rack for $8? I've been looking on ebay and they go for $15 or so there (but with free shipping). what are the dimensions of it? - they sell them in different sizes but give the measurements in mm and I'm too lazy to convert the mm to inches.

comment - I see, like me, you are a new mixer and got a ton of flavors - about 60 by my eyeballing it... I used Gremlin DIY for my first set of flavors and Bull City for the second. How do you like WL? Off the top I'd say I'm glad I didn't go with WL. Most of those bottles look like they have dripper tops. Have you mixed any juices yet? If not, you will likely find the bottles on your top rack are much easier to work with. Good mix of flavors btw. I mostly vape custards but with DIY I figure I'll branch out a bit. I don't like most commercial fruit juices because they are too "fruity" for me. I'm guessing I should be able to mix at least some juices with a much lower fruit percentage. the whole "tailor to your tastes" part is what I look forward to most.

Have you bookmarked all the recipes you're going to try over at ELR?

2 points

by DIY405over 8 years ago

That looks really nice but I was under the impression that if you didn't store your flavors in a dark place they would degrade quicker.

2 points

by ece_guyover 8 years ago

Looks great man. Since you're not ordering any PG, do you want to mix max VG?

2 points

by all_those_wordsover 8 years ago

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, max VG works with my setups and I just figured it would be easier to start out mixing max VG. As with all things DIY related, I could be persuaded to think otherwise.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Do note that PG is the main flavor carrier and while most flavorings are PG based, that might not be quite enough. I'd get a small bottle of PG to reach a 20/80 PG/VG ratio, then you can at least compare with and without for yourself.

2 points

by ece_guyover 8 years ago

Hey, if you know 100% you want max VG, there's no problem with that. On the other hand, PG is cheap enough that it doesn't hurt to get to have some flexibility in your mixing.

As a new mixer are you still still tempted by commercial juice?

I'm a new mixer and a custard lover. this means it will be at least a month for me to know if any of the juices I mixed up last wednesday have any adv potential. will search for and try some fruity shake and vape recipes though they are outside of my usual juice profile.

I still get all those emails about "10% off all juices" etc. Gianthill I used to search constantly looking for new juices. A few other places I'd check from time to time.

I have a few mixes under my belt and one juice ready to go (King Custard). Based on the one juice ready to go I think it's better than "premium". because DIY juice is so clear (at least for now) it doesn't gunk it up my coils. so I'm thinking DIY will eventually be a winner for me.

Are you still looking at commercial juices?

3 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Nope, been 20 months or so since I last bought juice, I believe it was Cosmic Fog's Nutz. I made some attempts at cloning it and got close enough to realize I'd never have to pay for it again.

10% off may seem tempting until you realize it's still 100 times more expensive than DIY.

As for waiting a month, you don't HAVE to wait that long. You CAN try everything right after mixing, just keep in mind that things will change over time. In fact, it's pretty good to do this to see what actually happens during a steep, or more importantly, what doesn't happen. Might save you some disappointments in the future if you make a habit out of long steeps.

2 points

by geb999over 8 years ago

thanks - I've been doing just that. I've tasted everything I mixed so far. most aren't ready yet but it has been interesting to see if I can taste anything new day to day. one juice I can vape now (and in fact I am vaping now) - king custard. since I know for sure I like that one juice I'm going to mix up a 60ml bottle tomorrow.

yeah I just needed to get off the mixing training wheels. 10% off already way more expensive than DIY doesn't hold much allure. I guess DIY is like anything else - once you know how to do it you no longer go to the commercial people for it. Of everything I've learned in the last month or so nothing has hit me more than realizing the cost of DIY vs commercial. Although I had to spend $165 or so on the start up costs (and another $80 to fix some newbie mistakes - I didn't buy nearly enough VG so I ordered a gallon over the weekend and $45 for my second flavor order) I should be able to mix literally 2000+ mls of juice AND still have a ton of flavoring left over for more mixes. from here out it's just more VG and favorite flavors as I feel I need them.

2 points

by ece_guyover 8 years ago

Not really, but at the same time I've thought about it. I'd like to one day try some of the liquids I used to love to see how they hold up and to see if I could clone them.

2 points

by geb999over 8 years ago

DIYorDIE made a really good point in one of his videos - commercial juices are chuck full of sucralose and other sweeteners. I'm finding my DIY juice to be much "cleaner". once I get the hang of mixing commercial juice will be in the rear view mirror. the cost of DIY vs commercial is enough for me to get over my temptations.

as for clones there is exactly one that holds any real interest for me - that Gremlin VC clone by ultimateoreo - it's what made me decide to try DIY in the first place.

How important is it really to do single flavor tests? I am yet to be convinced it is necessary. Couldn't you just research the others' notes on flavors?

4 points

by goldfish18over 8 years agoWinner of the 1st DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

If you plan on developing your own recipes, it's highly recommended to single flavor test all your flavors. If you just want to mix other people's recipes then don't worry about flavor testing.

Ever seen one of those cooking shows like Chopped or whatever? Anyway, if a chef is given an ingredient that he or she has never used before, what do they do? They taste it by itself to see how they can fit it into their profiles. They wouldn't just guess what it taste like then randomly integrate it into a dish.

> Couldn't you just research the others' notes on flavors?

Yes you could. However, everyone's palate is different.

3 points

by geb999over 8 years ago

I've wondered the same thing. Admittedly I have no real plans on creating any new flavors. At best I may modify existing recipes for my tastes - perhaps I'll change one up enough for it to be considered a new juice.

I don't particularly like fruit vapes but don't mind a juice with a fruit component. I don't see how tasting plain strawberry or plain graham cracker crust by itself helps.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

I have 6-7 strawberries from TFA, CAP, FA, INW, etc. They're all very different and none of them could be described as a plain strawberry. Substitute one with another in a recipe and the outcome will be vastly different.

2 points

by geb999over 8 years ago

I totally get that part of it. My problem is a man of a certain age and my taste buds are simply no longer refined to that point. I tend to gauge juice into like or don't like. I'm sure I'd taste the difference between the different strawberries. As I'm typing this I think I'm reconsidering. If I don't like a particular strawberry it might be good to know that so I can choose a different one for the juice.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

It depends on what your goals are. If you only mix other people's recipes, you don't need it. Even if you occasionally substitute flavors or change things up a bit, it's not really necessary. But if you want to create your own recipes with any hope of success, you need to know what you're doing. Relying on other people's impression of a flavor for creating a new profile isn't really going to work, it's only good for a general idea, the same way sniffing the bottle or putting a few drops in a glass of water is. You have to actually vape it on its own to know what it will be like to vape.

2 points

by zwonchover 8 years ago

I think long term I'd like to make my own recipes. It just seems overwhelming to test all these flavors on their own. I suppose I need to just get familiar with what I have before I move on to other flavors.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 8 years ago

Then I wouldn't bother for now, you'll familiarize yourself with the flavors over time too, especially if you keep trying new recipes or make changes here and there to the recipes you mix.

If you decide later that you want to get creative, you'll realize what it's all about on your own.

2 points

I just tried to mix my first 120 ml. It's rather standard strawberry. I added all the flavors except strawberry, because I realized far too late that I didn't have enough ml to satisfy the recipe. If I just leave it as is and order more strawberry, will adding it after the fact still work?

4 points

You can add things later. It won't be exactly the same, but strawberry doesn't need a long steep so it's fine.

I understand that technically speaking mixing by weight can be more accurate. However, wouldn't it simply be easier than mixing by weight or volume alone, to use a volumetric flask to mix up batches?

It would provide much more reproducible results for each batch and you could then dial in your flavorings and etc. after testing it, to produce a better final eliquid, which would help very much if you're playing with touchy flavors that can become overpowering if you add too much.

I'm asking this, because in chemistry classes and my clinical chemistry class, we used volumetric flasks to produce stock solutions.

The idea is that you have a volumetric flask that holds exactly x ml of liquid and this flask is calibrated for extreme accuracy and precision of the final volume .

For example, I have a 30ml volumetric flask, and I want to make a 24mg/ml final solution of eliquid with a 70% Vegetable Glycerin to 30% PG ratio, and no flavors for simplicity.

I would first add 7.20 ml of my 100mg/ml nicotine base (assume that it's 100% PG) to the volumetric flask.

Next, I then add 2.30 ml of my PG diluent. After this, I slowly, add 10 ml of VG, add another 5ml of VG, and then use a plastic dropper to add the last bit until the meniscus hits it's mark, being careful not to go above the last bit, (adding in all, approximately 20.5 ml of VG in the final resulting eliquid in the volumetric flask)

I then get parafilm, and cover the top of the flask and invert it many times. After this, I then transfer it to a beaker, and then finally transfer to either, one 30ml dropper bottle, or two 15ml dropper bottles, and shake and invert these until the final eliquid is well mixed and uniform.

(Final solution consists of: 7.2ml of 100mg/ml PG Nicotine base, 2.3ml of 100% PG, 20.5ml of 100% VG)

5 points

by PerennialPhilosopherover 8 years ago

That sounds much more complicated than mixing by weight. I just put everything into the bottle I'm going to drop it from, shake, steep, and vape.

3 points

by ece_guyover 8 years ago

You said "and no flavors for simplicity". Well, I would say the biggest advantage of mixing by weight comes from measuring the tiny amount of stuff that needs to be added.

Let's say you need to add 1% of a flavoring into 30 mL of e juice, so 0.30 mL. Measuring out 0.30 exactly with the volumetric method can not only get tedious, but also wasteful. It can get tedious because with some recipes you have 6 or more flavors that are used in small amounts and you'd want to use a small pipette or syringe for every single different flavor. Also measuring out very small amounts volumetrically won't be nearly as accurate as weighing it.

Certainly mixing by volume is still a valid technique, especially if you're, say, mixing a single flavor juice. But in the end, mixing by weight is more accurate, creates less garbage and IMO simply more practical.

2 points

by franglish9265over 8 years ago

There are many different volumes available for these flasks, in fact you could use one with a calibrated laboratory scale as well, for adding the flavors.

The reason I asked, is because it's class A calibrated glassware, the final volume of the flask is very accurate (accuracy is closenes to true value) and very precise (precision is how reproducible your results are).

Therefore, the variations in final volume of the batches that you produce are highly reduced, and the reduction of this variation can help you to dial a recipe in, so that it is perfect, very reproducible, and consistent.

>the final volume of the flask is very accurate (accuracy is closenes to true value) and very precise (precision is how reproducible your results are).

Yes, I too took Chemistry in high school as I'm sure most people here did.

In the end, you can buy very expensive lab equipment and get better results, this much is true. You can buy automated dispensers and you can produce juice like most mass manufacturers do. But most of the users here are just mixing juice at home, and mixing only for personal use. Getting a scale is simply cheap and works better than simple volumetric mixing.

Just mix however you like.

Out of curiosity, you said in your original comment

>However, wouldn't it simply be easier than mixing by weight or volume alone, to use a volumetric flask to mix up batches?

And you go on to use only volumetric measurement. What is the difference? Just using better gear for measuring by volume?

Technically, high precision instruments of any type are always going to create a more precise final solution. However, in practice, most people find mixing by weight to be less messy, faster, and easier than other methods. Weight also has the advantage of being impervious to temperature and pressure variations, which is why is used in many commercial settings where bulk storage of components may not be temperature controlled.

Personally I mix my base (80vg, 20pg and 3mg nic) at a litre at a time using measuring cylinders.

I only mix my weight for flavours.

What I do, I get my empty bottle, stick it on the scales, weigh out each flavour into the bottle and then top up the bottle with my premixed base. I find this the most easiest way.

Downside is that the VG/PG ratio is about +/- 5% due to amount of flavours I add.

You still have to transfer the volumetric glass, resulting in a loss of volume, and since a homogeneous mixture isn't possible using the simple methods we use, you're going to lose a disproportionate amount of each flavoring in the volume left behind. Mixing by weight into a bottle doesn't have these losses.

That is, unless you plan to drip your volumetric flask directly into your rdas or tanks.

Yes, dripping straight from a volumetric flask would be incredibly tedious.

However, assuming that you could mix it into a very homogeneous mixture before transfer to final bottles, it would provide a much more accurate and precise batch, as far as final volume, and therefore the final concentration of the nicotine, flavors and diluents (VG&/PG).

by franglish9265over 8 years ago

There are many different volumes available for these flasks, in fact you could use one with a calibrated laboratory scale as well, for adding the flavors.

The reason I asked, is because it's class A calibrated glassware, the final volume of the flask is very accurate (accuracy is closenes to true value) and very precise (precision is how reproducible your results are).

Therefore, the variations in final volume of the batches that you produce are highly reduced, and the reduction of this variation can help you to dial a recipe in, so that it is perfect, very reproducible, and consistent.

Brand new to DIY and trying to get a sense of what DIY juice taste like. I just mixed a batch of simple sugar cookie - 8% Cap sugar cookie and 4% Cap VC1. here on reddit someone said it was shake and vape. so I did and it taste super harsh. There were no notes on ELR about how long to steep it. Given those ingredients does anyone have any idea of what's going on or how long I should steep? Any thoughts for a simple (true) shake and vape I might want to try to get the hang of DIY?

Give sugar cookie 5 days and try it again, but if it's harshness it is more likely your nicotine than the flavors. Weird, would be a way to describe it unsteeped, it's not uncommon for people to find unsteeped custard-heavy just to taste off, weird, or just plain yucky, but harsh is not a common word for it. Would you by any chance describe the flavor as peppery? Given those ingredients it would be normal to wait two weeks, but that particular blend doesn't really require it.

Really, really true shake and vapes are going to be almost exclusively fruit flavors, but I've always thought Mustard Milk (6% TFA Strawberry, 8% TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream) tasted great when shake and vaped. Also, check out /r/ShakeAndVape and see if anything there appeals to you.

thanks. you're right. harsh probably wasn't the right word. more like "just not good". The juice is about an hour "old" so I gave it another good shake and taste. It wasn't harsh - just not sweet or anything I was expecting. I mixed it too fast and didn't read the directions closely enough - I mixed up the 8% sugar cookie with 8 mls. luckily I caught my error before it was too late. Given how much Sugar Cookie I put it I was able to scale it up to 60mls with no problem (and keep the percentages proper for a 60ml mix). Just hoping it gets sweet (or whatever it's supposed to taste like) in a couple days - I'd hate to toss 60mls. Still I can tell it will likely be vapeable in a few days - I guess I was expecting a good shake and vape immediately. But my goal is not to mix up merely "vapeable" juices. Learning curve is steep with DIY - at least I was able to salvage this mix.

I don't have VBIC yet (which, along with CAP Butter Cream, I really should have ordered with my first flavors given how many recipes I'll likely mix has it as a flavor) but will order some next week. I was going to go with CAP VBIC - is the TFA version better?

One last question or perhaps comment I'm looking for input on. I watched a ton of DIYorDie videos before I took the DIY plunge. Something he said really caught my interest. He was saying that many of the "premium" juices on the market are chuck full of sucralose and other sweeteners to make it palatable to a mass market. Does one need to acquire a taste for DIY juice? or perhaps a better way of putting it, are my tastebuds "damaged" by the super sweet stuff I'd been vaping so when I taste "real juice" it tastes odd at first? Sort of like when you've only eaten say McDonalds hamburgers (which taste good to you because that's all you know) and then you are served a homemade "chef's" hamburger which doesn't have all the McDonalds "extras" like the added fat and preservatives etc.?

That's awesome that you were able to enjoy salvage the juice! Hopefully it will turn into something you'll enjoy.

CAP is safer VBIC - quite a few people have a weird thing where they think TFA VBIC tastes like pepper. I think it's genetic, like the cilantro-soap gene. But others praise TFA VBIC as the best VBIC, because tastes thicker and more boldly vanilla beany. So it's up to you want to roll those pepper dice.

That Mickey D's analogy is perfect. Yes, you'll get used to it if you just stick it out for awhile. Most of these flavors are inherently a little sweet, VG is basically syrup, so sweetener is largely unnecessary and definitely overused. Give it several weeks and a few different mixes. If you still aren't finding any DIY juice to be plenty sweet, you can always get some sweetener. It would gunk your coils faster and your palate would never develop past McDonald's stage, but you'll still be saving loads of money on juice and most importantly, not using tobacco.

I've got vape mail incoming tomorrow. I've grabbed some Nic in 50/50 pg/vg (I'm hoping the pg content will hope me avoid hot spots and will be remembering to shake until my arm is numb), a scale, some pg and vg, a dozen-ish fruit flavorings, some koolada, some droppers/pipettes, and I've got dozens of cleaned bottles here from my years of vaping. I think I have all of the physical stuff I need to make juice, and I've read (and watched as many YouTube videos) on DIY as I think I can stomach. As far as safety, I've got gloves and goggles at my house already, and I'm confident in my abilities to measure by volume or mass/weight. The science nerd in me will probably enjoy this way too much, so I'm not worried about getting burned out on making it.

My plan is to start with several single fruit flavors the first time I mix. I plan on keeping meticulous notes on flavors moving forward. I'll also have my girlfriend try most everything, so I'll have a second set of opinions on most of the flavors for my notes.

I exclusively vape fruity and menthol flavors, so I'm pretty much set for me for the foreseeable future. I will have to add some dessert type flavorings as I need them because my girlfriend likes them. I plan on adding those once I get a good grasp on the fruit flavors because of the complexity of layering extra flavors, especially the ones that I don't typically vape. Or eat for that matter. I'm not a sweets person.

If a fruit flavor is not mentioned in the juice reviews section, is there a good percentage to mix at to try them? Like, should all fruit flavors be mixed at 10% by themselves to try them? If I'm trying to ballpark, is there any penalty to starting at say 3% and adding 1-2% to the mix until I get it close to where I want it?

Do I /need/ any of the additives like a sweetener, sour drops, or emulsifying agent? I feel like those are just extras that I can get by without unless I just can't get something to work.

Also, thanks for this awesome reference. I cannot believe that you can make juice for $1-3 a bottle. I feel beyond dumb for spending as much as I did on premium juice. Especially if it's as simple as using a calculator, scale, and being cautious.

You can check out the specific flavor pages on ELR, ATF or in this subreddit to see what is the suggested single flavor %. 10% might be OK for a brand like TFA, but ludicrously high for some other flavors/brands. Just check online to see what is an acceptable amount ahead of time. Also, the final amount you want will depend on your preference and the gear you're using (is it sub-ohm, tank, dripper, MTL etc)

>Do I /need/ any of the additives like a sweetener, sour drops, or emulsifying agent? I feel like those are just extras that I can get by without unless I just can't get something to work.

You don't need these additives, but it doesn't hurt to have them either. Just start without using them and you can add it later.

Also, you've asked if you can add flavors to already mixed liquids, and yes you can. However, depending on the amount you add you might be knocking around your ratios a bit (the PG/VG ratio, also the amount of nicotine) But if you are only doing it to test how 2 things added together will taste, it should give you a good idea.

You said you got gloves. Are they latex or nitrile?

I'm almost positive I have latex, nitrile, and the clear plastic food service looking gloves. Someone in my Chem 1020 was allergic to latex and we all had to wear the clear ones that semester.

Definitely use the nitrile gloves - nicotine gets through latex.

Replying to my own comment as I think the wording might have be confusing. I am not looking for a recipe to try. I am trying to know what % of a single flavor to use to taste that one flavor in a single flavor e-juice recipe. Example - I have TFA Dragon Fruit. I want to mix up 30ml of juive and only use TFA Dragon Fruit - what is the % of flavor I use? Thanks!

Yes I do have personal experience. By its self, it's a bit flat. But using it as a base with other blueberries and a dash of em and you'll have a good time.

Try

5% cap blue cotton candy. 2% Fw blueberry. 0.25% tfa sweet raspberry. 2% TFA em.

You can play with it quite a bit.
