Concentrates containing alchohol
submitted over 8 years ago by X2G_

Hi,

First of all, I'm a new DIYer.

During my search for concentrates, I've found that some of them contains alchohol or Ethyl Alcohol.

What is the effect of vaping Alchohol?

Will you get high vaping juices containing Ethyl Alcohol?

how can I completely get rid of it?

Thing is, I don't want Ethyl Alcohol in my juice, but alot of recipes here will have a concentrate containing it.

Thanks.

Absolutely nothing. It's such a miniscule amount that it will have zero effect.

I have a butterscotch graham cracker concentrate from LB that have a very strong alcohol smell. Is that normal?

also, some (TFA I think) mentioned on one of their concentrate that it has "Just a little" alcohol while others are just plain alcohol. Moreover, they sometimes have a version 2 without alcohol at all. This keeps me wondering...

You don't have anything to worry about. Just steep your mixes. If you are that concerned about the EA in the flavors (you shouldn't be), you can leave the cap off for 10-15 mins.

Version 2 usually isn't alcohol free, it's usually Diketone free.

You're thinking about RF versions, for reduced flammability, which only serves to comply with transportation regulations.

RF is reduced flashpoint.

I was active in AA when I first started vaping so this realization really threw me off. Especially with videos on YouTube of people "vaporizing" everclear with pressure chambers and getting sloshed. Anyway, I found the amount of ethyl alcohol in juice to be negligible. It is present in "professional" juices as well so it's not unique to DIY, but inherit to some flavors. I think they contribute to the "throat hit" aspect a bit, but they don't get you drunk or give you a buzz. Even in rehab where I was mixing juice (they didn't know my flavors were alcohol based) I passed all my breathalyzer and piss tests, so it really just wasn't showing up even when they were looking for it. I have been sober for 3 years now and am not worried about it. I would try to keep the alcohol based flavors below 5% or so, but that's just my personal preference. Hope this helps.

You could just put your juice in some hot water for a little bit to evaporate the alcohol from the juice. (with the cap off, how else will the vapors escape?)

It will typically vaporize out of solution on its own after a while. Not something to worry about. Steeping with the cap off can speed this process, but will result in some loss of flavor. Time is the best solution.

How long is a while?

30 minutes at most.

While he shouldn't worry about EA, what you told him is completely wrong. Alcohol doesn't evaporate that way. Read up before you spout broscience.

Without constant agitation, your alcohol will evaporate very slowly, as a homogeneous system. If you wanted to get rid of as much as possible, use an immersion mixer (or a milk foamer) to aeriate it as much as possible. Do this often, for several days to eliminate most. You will not be able to get all of it out.

When I first got into vaping alcohol was a huge topic with diacetyl. And everybody was like "Hey! That's bad for you". Then the truth came out and now it's common to see DIY to choose flavor with diacetyl in it. Alcohol can be evaporated with time. It doesn't really have any effect on your body.

Do you notice any difference when you ingest a food containing a flavoring with alcohol (such as vanilla extract)? It has about the same effect -- 0. Alcohol can lead to a bit of a harsh throat though, so to counteract that, you can do what others have suggested by letting it breathe. Alcohol is used because it is a solvent that is typically non-irritating.

Fun Fact: People can be allergic to alcohol, I met a lady who would go in to anaphylactic shock whenever consuming ethyl alcohol

Well the alcohol when vaporized turns into Ciroc apple vodka. One that is in your lungs it is absorbed into your blood stream and the alcohol runs about your system partying all the way through the night.

All I know is that TFA Red Hots gave me chest pain for about 12 hrs.

Just leave the cap off for a couple hours/overnight tops, and it will evaporate. The only issue I've had is when I don't do that, it can have a harsh flavor and/or throat hit.

It's not harmful. I make all my NET tobaccos with 190 proof pure grain alcohol. But I evaporate about 80% of it off in the final extract.
