Flavor review request thread?
submitted almost 9 years ago by PerennialPhilosopher

I've been trying to look into a particular HS flavor and can't find anything on this sub about it. I would be willing to bet some of you have it, but haven't reviewed it yet. Is there a way to request flavor reviews? If there isn't then would it be possible to have a monthly review request thread? The flavor reviews are one of the best things about this sub IMO and I would love to see more of them. I'm sure that we could help each other here.

Btw the flavor I'm searching for is HS Churchill

I would honestly suggest taking one for the team, spending the 2 or 3 bucks, trying it, and doing a review for the community.

To keep my opinion all in one place, I'm going to tag /u/ID10-T, /u/CheebaSteeba, /u/HocusKrokus in here to kind of "reply all" if you will.

The idea of a "flavor review request" comes off as somewhat of a low effort "what can I make with these flavors" or even the notoriously lazy "clone request" type of question. You're basically asking someone to do something for you that you can't be bothered with attempting, and for the record, I'm not a fan of either of these threads, but I do understand their place, which luckily isn't on our front page.

For me, it comes down to a couple simple things.

  1. I'm not here to answer nic questions, tell people where to buy supplies, suggest recipes, provide storage/labeling solutions, link lost souls to the sidebar/wiki, OR review flavors. Some things in DIY are better done YOURSELF through research or trial and error. The last thing I need is someone bugging me to mix a sampler and review it when I probably haven't even had time to mix or try out the flavor myself. This is a hobby, not a job. I contribute what I can when I have time or relevant information to share with someone who doesn't appear to just be jumping onto their reddit mobile app and asking random stupid questions on the front page.

  2. If you're really curious about a flavor that nobody seems to have used much, do what I do, and freaking buy it. Test it, take notes, and post the information you gathered here for the rest of us. With the large number of subscribers here, I don't think it's right that only a dozen or so of us have bothered with reviews. If you see something that hasn't been reviewed, then by all means, please attempt to do it!

Another thing for everyone to consider: How many flavor reviews have you read vs. how many have you contributed?

All that being said, I'm going to state that I won't be participating in any sort of "review request thread". It sounds like more of a chore than anything. I'd say, take the reviews as they come, or feel free to contribute something if you don't see it in the wiki.

Edit: forgot /u/ConcreteRiver

> How many flavor reviews have you read vs. how many have you contributed

Ouch. That one really stings.

Ok, I think this might kill the "flavor review request" idea. As you can see, that was very first reaction to it as well, "If I really wanted a flavor review that badly what I'd probably do is review it myself." I just also saw such a thing as an opportunity add to the participation level and vibrancy of the community. To give people something fun to do basically, and maybe encourage a few more reviews than we're getting, participation entirely optional as always. But if you and Skiddmark are both naysaying it, maybe not. It would probably just wind up being a bunch of posts with few replies like the infamous clone request thread anyway, and therefore a waste of /u/PerennialPhilosopher's time and energy.

I still need an answer to the Mogwai question, though I'm pretty sure now that the answer is going to be feeding after midnight. I'm more of a getting wet guy myself.

You are probably the last person I was directing that comment towards. You've contributed a significant amount of information and service here already. Mods are the some of the last people I would expect to see a flavor review from.

Still feel pretty low about it. I've tried a handful of new SC flavors and it wouldn't have been that much trouble to clean up my personal notes to make halfway decent flavor reviews out of them.

Yeah that's probably a better approach lol, well put sir!

Sounds reasonable. I had already picked up the flavor in question and planned on mixing up a single flavor tester. But the whole experience gave me this idea. You've made some good points, I'm a bit disappointed, but that is exactly why I wanted to ask.

Thank you!

Edit: this reminded me to mix up a tester for HS Churchill. I will be posting a review after it steeps

I second this as a good idea.

Since you do or at least have done so many reviews yourself, I'd say your opinion on whether or not this is a good idea weighs pretty heavily here. I just want to get /u/Wh1skeyK1ng in here to weigh in. Think if I say his name three times in one thread it'll work like it does with Candyman or Bloody Mary?

Wouldn't hurt to also see what /u/ConcreteRiver has to say about it if he's not too busy playing the Devil's Bagpipe to comment.

Dude, candyman is five times. Seriously, check your facts.

There's already the more informal "hey, has anyone used this" kind of question that tends to yield pretty decent results but those can often be done just by searching the damn sub.

I'd participate, but I would think it would get weird pretty quick with the lag in steep times and keeping everyone on task.

Maybe you're thinking of Beetlejuice. I don't know if /u/Wh1skeyK1ng/ seems particularly zany though...

A few whiskeys in I bet he can get a little zany, at least.

Yeah it's been a while since I've submitted one, I'm thinking maybe it'll be the kick in the pants I need to start doing them again lol

by skiddlzninjaover 8 years agoThat one moderator. You know, the honey guy.

I can guarantee you that 80% of the requests will have already been done, and people just won't bother taking a look before posting.

Edit: tenses are hard in perfect past.

So cynical. But probably right as usual. Are you saying, then, that this is not a very good idea, or not worth the time & effort because of that? Do you think 80% of the responses will be /u/PerennialPhilosopher kindly linking them to the reviews that have already been done, or will it just be people telling them they're lazy, illegitimate, retarded, etc?

by skiddlzninjaover 8 years agoThat one moderator. You know, the honey guy.

I think the thread would end up just being a collection of users that can't be bothered to search. Not sure if any value will come from it, since people can just request on the review posts themselves.

I doubt any toxicity will come of it, but I also doubt much use will come of it.

So it won't hurt either way, but be sure to have the wiki link in your clipboard.

Thanks. I think it's been written off as a waste of time now. Once you and Wh1skyK1ng agree on something not being a good/useful idea, that effectively kills it.

I could easily put a link to the flavor review section in the thread to make it that much easier. It might be that way at first but I think that kind of thing would become less common as people found their bearings.

/u/skiddlzninja as been around awhile here and is very smart and I assume his forecast for how it will go will come to pass. I'm just wondering if he thinks it's not worth doing because 80% of the requests will be for reviews that have already been done, or is just making a prediction for the sake of making a prediction. On the other hand, some of skiddlz's cynical reddit-related prognostications have famously not come true...

Edit: Yes, a link in your review request thread to the current wiki with a reminder that says "first check here to see if your flavor has already been reviewed" would head off quite a bit of that, I bet.

If I am having trouble finding a flavor review or notes about a specific flavor on this sub I take a look at different ecig forums and websites such as ELR for the notes and pairings of the flavor to give me an idea. People tend to also include the notes about the flavors they use when posting a recipe anyway, so you can definitely get an idea about the flavors. I agree with the people who say to just buy the damn flavor and test it out. I didn't know how Cherry Blossom would taste like based on the insanely vague posts regarding it. Now I use it and love the flavoring. I could tell you that Shisha Strawberry is a bit overrated, but thats my unpopular note on the flavor and many others seem to enjoy it!

Did you decide to buy this and do a review on it? I ordered it last night, so in about a month I can review it.

Yes I've got it steeping now. It's been two weeks today. I will do my testing on Friday probably since it's my day off

Awesome! Looking forward to it.

I just got mine in and mixed it up at 5%. Couldn't help but take a little sample. You tasted yet? It almost reminds me of this juice I used to get when I first started vaping. It was a watermelon jolly rancher flavor. Wasn't expecting it to taste so fruity. Not bad though. We will see how she gets with age.

I was just about to post my review actually. I'm glad you mixed it at 5 cuz I did 3 and I was thinking it could use more. I noticed the fruitiness too

If I really wanted a flavor review that badly what I'd probably do is review it myself. Or I might ask someone who I know has tons of flavors, someone who has an interest in a particular type of flavor, or someone who has used that flavor in a recipe.

That said, I think a review request thread is a great idea. Users could post requests for flavors that haven't been reviewed yet and others could reply with "I'll take that one" or "I already have that mixed up and will review in a few days" or "That one's already on the flavor review wiki, are you illiterate?!"

I would really like to run this by the other mods, especially /u/Wh1skeyK1ng first, but I'm thinking that if you want to be responsible for writing that up and posting it and following up with people to see that they're doing the reviews they agreed to do (so that a flavor review isn't held up by someone calling dibs and then not doing it), I bet I could find room in the top bar or sidebar for such a monthly post or Whiskey could stick a link to it at the top of the flavor reviews wiki.

Seems like a pretty fun idea. I'd love to jump in, especially since I already have a huge collection. Though on the downside I think I'd start finding ways to expand it. Just another way for us junkies to rationalize our poor judgement skills. \ö/

No. But I also don't need more of them. At 600+ I'm running pretty low on space.

Yeah that would be pretty cool. Exactly what I had in mind. I would love to be a bigger part of this sub in any way I can help

Awesome. I just want to get /u/Wh1skeyK1ng in here to let me know if there's any downside to this I haven't thought of that might make it a bad idea or an idea in need of some revision, and/or to weigh in on just where to put such a post, and maybe get him to "announce" it since he has put so much into the flavor review wiki which I agree is one of the best things about this sub, and then perhaps you can start the first monthly flavor review request thread for January a few days early.
