Happy Holidays DIY-ejuice!
Thank you to everyone who participated in last week's Flavor of The Week, Butterscotch.
As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
This week's flavor is: Pecan
Past FOTW posts can be found here
Prepare yourselves, next week's FOTW will be: Pomegranate
The week after next will be: Pear - as suggested by /u/CheebaSteeba
The week after that will be: ??? You tell me. Take this opportunity to suggest one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that). Otherwise I'm going to pick something like passionfruit, papaya, or peanut butter, just because I'm still in a P mood.
http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/1059359/Butter%20Pecan%20Bar I wanted to make a gooey butter pecan bar. I used One on One's butter pecan and figured that would take care of the butter and pecan part of the recipe, as well as the sweetness. I used INW Biscuit for the cookie portion and also to add a bakery note and sweetness. I added Vanilla Shisha by Inawera to take the place of the Vanilla extract. Altogether, it's actually good right away which surprised me. You may have to adjust the percentages a bit as I like mine lower than most but I think it's a solid recipe and fairly simple. I also have FW Butter Pecan but admittedly only used it maybe once if ever. I'm really trying to stay away from FW in general due to the fructose and corn syrup additives.
Did we already do pear? That might be a good one. WHAT'S WITH ALL THE P?!?
Pear has been done as an FOTW, but it was over a year ago, it can't hurt to do it again. There have been quite a few advancements in tasty pear juices since then, and that was back before many people had tried INW's. Let's do pear week after next.
I'm not entirely sure what my P problem is, but it might have something to do with slowly working toward revisiting Peanut Butter as an FOTW, despite that clearly being a blatant abuse of power for self-serving ends.
I love it! My /r/mixersclub recipe is a pecan pancake flavor.
In the recipe I wanted a glazed pecan flavor so I used TFA pecan at 1.25% and TFA Pralines and Cream at 5.5% this seemed to be a great balance of candy pecan and actual nut. The only downside would be if you wanted to avoid the creaminess of the latter flavor.
I am especially excited to try that one. Will you repost the recipe and notes here in case anyone wants to mix it up or at least learn from your use of those flavors?
Nutcracker Sweet!
A tall stack of buttermilk pancakes filled with glazed pecans, drizzled with syrup, and topped with whipped cream... Mmmmmm...
TFA Pralines and Cream 5.5% while testing this flavor I knew it was going to be the star of the show. As a standalone this has enough complexity to hold its own. Very creamy with a subtle nuttiness.
CAP Sugar Cookie 3% this is a very sweet bready flavor. It's great as a pancake in this context.
TFA Pecan 1.25% this is very much a raw pecan flavor. Even at this low percentage I can taste the skin of the pecan.
JF Biscuit .75% part of my pancake base
JF Cookie .75% part of my pancake base
FA Liquid Amber .75% kick it up a notch "BAM!" This adds a cooked quality to the whole recipe and I find it adds a syrupy flavor as well.
Time to finally crack open that vial of FlavorEnvy Pecan Pie that I never even touched. Anyone ever use this brand?
I don't think I've even heard of FlavorEnvy. Please give it a try and let us know how it goes.
Seems they're now called Nicotine Labs, but equally unknown. I'll report back!
Day 1: So hmm, shake and vape, it's a sweet watery nuttiness followed by an acetyl pyrazinish breadiness and an aftertaste that resembles pecan. Not very rich or flavorful, more like a base note that needs some support. No significant difference between 5% and 10%. Definitely needs to steep though, to be continued.
Day 3: No longer sweet or watery, if anything it's slightly salty. Darker more pronounced nuts, the AP breadiness is more mellow, but this requires a lot of imagination to pass for a pecan pie. Not nearly flavorful enough at 10% to warrant adding supporting flavors to it. I don't have high hopes for this, you'd be better off with a good pecan flavor and adding the pie part yourself.
Has anyone tried FW's pecan offerings? They both seem promising.
Butter Pecan, Maple Pecan, and Pecan. Three offerings. Haven't tried any of them but I think Butter Pecan definitely looks promising in the ways I've seen it used. Dunno about the plain Pecan but I know someone who has used it. /u/Apexified, care to chime in?
It took me a minute to realize I'd ever even used FW Pecan (the recipe is a year old) so if IIRC it was because TFA Pecan was dry and realistic and FW Pecan was sweeter and slightly creamy. But ultimately it was because, at the time, I didn't have FW Butter Pecan (which eventually made it into the recipe before I got tired of the profile altogether)
Can the next flavor of the week be a flavor that's on special at one of the vendors? That way everyone can have a reason to get in on the fun financially?
What's with the disregard for PECK-in pronounced huh? You some kind of tree nut racist?
Not so much tree nut racism as tree nut self-loathing and ignorance. The ignorance comes in with PECK-in, as that's a new one I can't say I've ever heard. Whereabouts you from, anyway?
As for the self-loathing, well, I live smack dab in the middle of an area where everyone says either puh-KAHN or pick-AHN. And as much as I make an effort to say pee-KAHN or PEE-kahn like a normal person or PEE-can to sound extra elitist, an embarrassingly hickish puh-KAHN frequently slips out when I'm asking for another slice of pie, especially around this time of year when family gatherings are more frequent.
I prefer peh-kin
Where are you people coming from with this PECK-in and peh-kin? Not saying there's anything wrong with them, I just didn't expect to learn two new pronunciations for pecan today.
The only real pecan flavoring I have some experience with is FLV Pralines, and while tasty is a not exactly a pecan flavor. To me it tastes kind of like a pecan flavored creamy caramel, there's no real texture to it. FLV Macaroon in small %s gave it a nice bit of nuttiness, but still needed more texture; other nuts pair really well with it too.
Would adding a little more brown sugar to it help it get closer to an actual praline or is it more the nut part that's missing?
This stuff is pretty darn good, I'm guessing fw butter pecan is the main flavoring used. Anyone else had it?
Perhaps FW Butter Pecan plus FW toffee dream cream/FW Butter Toffee?
It's got some butter toffee and toffee dream cream. I've been playing with all of them and seeing what's in the juice. I don't think it's got any butter pecan, at least not FW's offering. There's something odd about it what I don't taste in this juice but perhaps it'll smooth out after a steep. I've ordered damn near every toffee/pecan/butter variant I can find from every mfg so I'll crack it at some point.
