Humble hello from on-demand mixing company.
submitted almost 9 years ago by vapechemy

Hi everyone on this sub.

Last Thursday marked a year clean from cigs. This is a major feat for me, as I was a heavy smoker for close to twenty years. So, although you might consider this post to be commercial in the nature, I wanted to use it first to say a big thank you for everyone in this and sister/daughter subs, for being invaluable source of information – first how to transition smoothly from stinkies to only vaping and after that – how to wind my own coils and mix my own e-liquid.

Speaking of the last – for the past 6 months, we have been building a service vapechemy.com which would enable DIY e-liquid access for everyone: mixer or not. Here is how it works: we have built a site to allow anyone to publish their DIY recipes. I know a couple of those already exist and are well regarded by everyone around here. Our take on the subject is a bit different; we allow visitors to order the e-liquids from the published recipes and the author of a recipe gets a 6% cash revenue share from every bottle of their e-liquid sold through our site. You will be able to cash it out either through PayPal or bitcoin.

We have just finished setting up the site and the whole mixing process and procedures. But before we start - we wanted to ask you, the authors to take a look and give us all the feedback you have. We want you to be happy about the overall usage experience before we start to communicate the site to a wider audience and also - to register your recipes in our database, which will automatically add ingredients and thresholded proportions to our recipe copyright protection mechanism.

Additionally – any questions – good or bad are be greatly appreciated and welcomed . We will be around here to answer any of your questions and include suggestions into development roadmap.

I'm gonna say this with the up-most respect, but 6% ain't shit in the scheme of things. You've clearly never sold to B&Ms, but it's a 50/50 cut. I get 50% because well, it's mine...and the shop got the other half. Example, I got $9 per bottle, shop sold for $18.

This is essentially what you're doing. My idea, trial and error, money wasted on R&D to get a retail version of a recipe out and you're taking 94% for supplies and your time? I understand your position, because I've had to buy supplies in bulk to meet demand in retail, but 6% is highway robbery and any respectable mixer that takes SIX PERCENT is in desperate, desperate need of money.

That being said, and the down votes coming my way, I wish you the best of luck, and think the idea is great. Meet me somewhere around 30-35% range and I'll check it out.

Edit: hell, even 25%

There's also no real way for them to prevent recipe theft. What's to stop me from grabbing the best recipes off elr and posting them up here as my own?

1 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

The only way - which we are ready to do and have the process in place for, is to manually do the claim check.

so make sure I rip off people not likely to know about your site. got it.

If I tweak a recipe released into the public domain by <=1% does that make it a unique recipe?

There is a huge potential for abuse that needs to be reconciled here.

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

No need to downvote - this is what healthy discussion should be like. From my perspective: if I was selling 30ml for 19USD, yes, then there probably would be a space for 50/50 rev. split. However, by the price points which we have set, there is about 30% margin left after all of the direct costs have been accounted for. So in 30-35% this simply would not stick business wise.

Why such a low margin? First of all - for order anything in any PG/VG ration and with any nic concentration, the automation is close to impossible, so it will still be manual mixing for each and every bottle. Human labour costs. A lot.

And the price point which we have chosen is adequate for what I think is a fair price.

What it boils down to is: I want to do this in scale and provide you with 6% of a hundred thousands rather than with 35% of a thousand worth of sales.

by WickAndWirealmost 9 years agoMixologist

That last sentence made me feel like I was talking with Kevin O'Leary from Shark tank, haha. On a serious note, I do understand that labor is expensive, thats why I ran a one-man show, which is why I'm not in retail anymore, but I also understand that there can be improvements made in the workflow that dramatically speeds up mixing, labeling, etc.

*Top sellers: Make flavor bases - huge batches of flavor bases for your top sellers save shitloads of time.

*PG/VG ratios pre-mixed. You know 30p/70v, 50/50 are gonna be popular...premix your bases so all you add is nicotine. Go even further, you know 30p/70v at 3mg is almost always going to be a heavy hitter. Mix a 30p/70v+3mg nic...so now you're just adding flavors, and topping off with a base.

Make a flavor base for every.single.flavor submitted - hell no. But use good judgment, if it's a recipe with FA Cappuccino @ 15%, don't even post it, let alone make a base. If its a recipe coming from Wayne, Skiddlez, or any of the regular posters that are posting quality recipes(theres so many of you now a days), it's probably a good idea to make a base.

I'm sorry if I'm sounding condescending or hyper-critical, but I'm still having a hard time seeing the 94%. Not to mention, you're essentially doing what ATF, ELR is doing, just monetizing it while giving nothing back to the community that's paying your bills, like flavor notes, helpful community-related feedback, suggestions, etc.

Appreciate you being able to handle the criticism and not get shook like you see a lot of newer companies. Remember to have thick skin, and consistency is always key. Best of luck dude.

edit: I swear I'm not an asshole

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Thanks for the discussion. If I just hid my head in the sand and would not like to hear the criticism, I would have just google adworded this as much as possible, and not went through here. You have to be ready to take a beating when you are posting here. That's like a second nature of reddit.

Good ideas on optimising production, thank you for sharing them! But these and most of the others need a bit of order scale to provide benefit; which and I am completely honest here - we obviously don't have when starting up.

This is our first attempt at cracking this so that we can provide affordable juice for everyone, while also giving back something to authors. And if this takes off, just like I think it will, I guess the reward and revenue split model will evlove much further within a year from now than I and the team can even imagine.

1 points

by Macon7almost 9 years ago

On the ATF/ELR point, don't you think this could incentivise the creators to do better flavor notes and descriptions? At least when I look at recipes a professionally written description of the juice is usually what sells me on it, and with money involved that might be more important.

The same goes for the recipe theft, this might have the spotify/netflix effect where many people who got their media pirated now pays for that same media since it is a lot easier with the new services. In that regard I am mostly talking about the extremely high prices on store bought e-liquid and the one-man shows that might be selling these free recipes.

If this proves to be a popular concept maybe the volume becomes large enough for the recipe makers to see more value in claiming their recipes and improving them?

8 points

by thedirtyprojectoralmost 9 years agoMixologist

It's an interesting idea. Some people would argue and say 6% is nothing. But this could be a good incentive for new mixers (and experienced ones) to put their products out there and make some money. Good luck!

4 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Thanks for the feedback. And you are right - it may benefit new and experienced mixers alike. Also - as the recipes remain IP of their authors, some even may decide to use this as a test environment to see what type of general public feedback they get, before finalizing something which they are building as a commercial recipe.

What happens when someone starts ripping off recipes and posting them as their own? If I'm browsing your site and see a recipe that I've posted here, but with a different name, what would happen? Anything in place to prevent that? With a whole bunch of recipes available here and other sites, I don't know how you would even check that.

7 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

What we have developed internally is a process of claim management: when you notice your recipe on our site, you should write to our customer support and provide information that allows us to establish you as an author of a recipe (most of known recipe sites have a publish timestamp). We will then contact the person who has published the recipe and ask them to provide a counter evidence.

Upon resolution the recipe would be transferred to the actual user and as such be further protected by copyright mechanism which we have implemented in the site.

6 points

by cheech_spalmost 9 years ago

What if 2 recipes only differ in percentages of individual ingredients? Or VG/PG ratio?
What if one CAP flavor is replaced with a similar FLV flavor?
What if one recipe is 'inspired' by another?
You used the word copyright, did you mean that literally? >Copyright law does not protect recipes that are mere listings of ingredients.

https://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html

With a free community site, these probably wouldn't pose real problems. But when you introduce money into the equation, its much more problematic.

3 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

First of - sorry - yes, Copyright is a very specific legal term, i shouldn't use it that freely, but it best described what we were trying to achieve. The more appropriate term would be: Copy protection. And it looks at the recipe with exactly the same ingredients and for a similar proportions: (within a certain threshold), which would allow to do inspiration recipes, but not straight out ripoffs and copies.

I asked him this identical question in the mod mail discussion about letting him post this hear. I'm satisfied with the answer for now, but we'll have to see how it pans out.

3 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 9 years agoresident tobacco specialist

I guess now that I think about it, there's really nothing from stopping anyone from taking a publicly published recipe and selling it on Reddit, to friends, or even B&Ms from doing it. I suppose at least this way there is a way to make a claim. And the shady people doing that would make way more than 6% going one of those other routes.

3 points

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

Most of us are giving these recipes away for free out of pure love for the craft. I'm sure they frequently get stolen and sold, and worse than that, sold without even so much as acknowledgement being given to the creator. 6% is a lot better than something that's less than 0%.

/u/vapechemy says he's got a plan in place to keep credit (and a little cash) going to where it is due. I'd like it better if there were a big red "report" button like on ATF, but he says he's got a plan in place to deal with such a situation. We'll see how it works.

The quickest way to prevent someone else from taking credit for your work would be putting your own recipes there before anyone else can. I've already started.

by the-guitaristalmost 9 years ago

is the website functional at the moment?

2 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Yes, everything works, although there are two things to keep in mind:

a) there are few recipes in there yet. We cleared all the test data we had in there, and there are only few left from giving it for a test in DIY telegram group,

b) we have disabled paypal and bitcoin checkout at the moment: we will give away first 1000 EUR in orders without any checkout and payment - I will describe this in detail a bit later, when we have gathered a bit of recipes in there.

because of a) and b) recipe order and sales tops are empty right now; as soon as I get some recipes in there: they will fill up.

2 points

by the-guitaristalmost 9 years ago

What about putting in a recipe and ordering it? Especially those recipes that I've been meaning to try before buying all the flavors needed to make them myself.

2 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

yes, you can do that.

3 points

by Hickerytickalmost 9 years ago

I think your idea is great but agree with others that the revenue for the author of the recipe is pretty poor, I also understand why at this moment though.

One concern I would have is with rogue recipe makers posting up a rough idea of what might look appealing, providing a fantastic description about it and having a ton of people buy it only for it to turn out shit and the maker gets paid. Surely your model does incentivise this?

Apologies if my point is off base, I'm on a plane and a little tired.

3 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Your point is not off base and certainly there is a risk of somebody doing this. In order to limit such behaviour (and the benefits one might achieve): what we have implemented is a rating system for the recipes, with a limitation of one rating per order and a bit of other statistics in the background.

1 points

by Macon7almost 9 years ago

Maybe there could be a place for some sort of small storefront for the recipie holders? In that way legiticimy and dedication (such as good flavour notes and other useful stuff that might sometimes be overlooked by the maker) could be incentivised?

I don't use ebay much, but I think they have something similar where you can see a sellers items and his ratings etc. something that can raise the professional and dedicated makers above the people who are trying to do a quick cashgrab

3 points

by Tiptup300almost 9 years ago

It won't let me publish my recipe because it's saying it's too similar to another recipe..... my recipe has one ingredient that's the same. TFA Sweetener, theirs is 2%, mine is 0.5%.

That's the only thing that is similar. Literally every other setting is different.

3 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Yes; that is like 75% of reasons why I created this post :) we did our internal testing but there are always things which slips between the fingers with complex systems. And recipe copy right protection algorithm is probably one of the most complex things in there.

3 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Thank you again for reporting this. Indeed, this was an error which we did not step on in our pre production tests. The fix has been applied and now it should be operated as we intended. Could you please test it again?

by Tiptup300almost 9 years ago

1 points

Yes. The usual - immutable vs mutable variable passing error.

3 points

by seratnealmost 9 years ago

First, as others have said. The profit sharing is out of whack. How about 0% to any recipe that is not imported, and has at least 5 reviews from ELR or ATF? Above that, it's 25% to the creator.

Second, your abbreviations don't line up with the common format. FW for Flavor West, instead of FV, etc.

Third, I know you posted this here hoping to get a lot of people to add recipes to your inventory. But, this site isn't made for this community if you're selling premade ready to vape mixes. If you were selling flavor bases, that would be a different story. But your 26% total limits that. That was the one thing I liked about vapecrafter. They've since seemed to go dark though and won't reply to emails so I'm not ordering from them.

Would flavor bases be something you would consider adding?

What are you doing about the FDA regulations. Since I would think it would make your business impossible?

Why the decrease/increase in percentages based on cigalike/tank/rda?

Big ole CATEGORIES text is not clickable... I keep wanting to click it.

Warning signs next to some flavorings without any reference as to what they mean (I assume diacetyl/acetyl propynol, but who knows).

What does HC mean?

2 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Thanks for the comments: first, just to make it clear, 6% is revenue share, not the profit share. So - from a sale with a total value of 20.00 USD, 1.20 USD would go to the author. My cost would be all of the flavouring, packaging, bases, mixing, promotion. Actually, I like the idea of having sort of levels for the rewards based on ratings, this should also help fight the cases where the recipes are just added for the purpose of somebody buying them by accident.

As to second - thanks we will change this.

Raw flavouring and bases - we have discussed adding this to the shop; as we have the stock already for doing the mixes, however this is not something we will do at the launch. I am trying to keep this as simple as possible at the start.

FDA and other regulators; we are based in Europe and this is a bit tricky one: the current regulations regulate product; however what we are selling here is: mix-on-demand service as the product exists in a single entity. We have done consultations with the regulating bodies and nobody obviously will say straight off that this is the loophole, but they have not straight out pointed the flaws in our reasoning as well. Let's put it this way - we know that there will be a fight, and we are ready to bash our heads over this.

Cigalike/RDA/Tank - because of typical flavour carrying intensity: RDA is much more of a flavor machine than cigalike. And this at least is our personal experince that to get the same taste intensity total flavoring vs. base has to be increased.

HC - was meant to stand for "Health concern", thanks for pointing out that this seems strange. We will do a brainstorm on what can be done with the labelling and triangle notification/warning signs.

3 points

by Tiptup300almost 9 years ago

You should be able to hover over the alarm icons to see "What is this?" and it pulls up a pop up that explains dactyl and the like.

I love the idea of Cigalike/RDA/Tank, really handy and simple for just subtly tweaking a recipe.

All & all I think I'm totally gonna have to give this site a try. Wish the shipping wasn't so bad though, nothing to be done there though I guess, I live in the US.

3 points

Thanks. Yes probably that's the most appropriate UX solution for this. will look at what and how can be done to properly display this.

2 points

by leapinglabratsalmost 9 years ago

The TPD would prevent you from selling bottles of juice above 10 ml, they're not gonna care whose recipe it is.

2 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

true. For orders, where shipping address is within the EU, we will brake down the total ordered quantity into 10ml bottles. Just to be on a safe side with regulation. You would still pay as for one large container.

How are you going to prevent cases of false identity? I see you have an enyawreklaw on your site, but when I texted him to ask if it was him, he hasn't ever heard of you? How can I know that my name, or any other high profile mixer from reddit or other sites, won't be taken and my recipes used to make profit from my intellectual property?

This is a common problem in this community, and it would be amazing if you would be willing to implement checks to combat it.

Edit: i apologize for not asking this in the chat we had yesterday, but it didn't occur to me at the time that the vape community has no respect for intellectual property.

An inherent problem with the diy ejuice community is that we share all of our recipes.

Not saying it's okay what someone is doing, just saying it's quite the can of kind of worms, kind of gummy worms, kind of noodles. And I'm making soup.

I will say /u/vapechemy was quick to respond and sort everything out with me. I think the idea is AMAZING, and allowing mixers to make a bit of cash excellent. But I'm worried about how effectively they can screen accounts and recipes. Last thing anyone wants is someone else taking their name and profiting from it.

And thank you for a very constructive email exchange. I see how you could have seen this as us doing this and straight out attacking us and accusing of fraud. So thank you for keeping a cool head around this!

by skiddlzninjaalmost 9 years agoThat one moderator. You know, the honey guy.

Yeah, but a company like this should be a bit more responsible when someone signs up to make money, or at least become familiar with the big names of the community to prevent cases like this. Perhaps an identity check like what US vendors have to use with the new FDA regulations. It might sound extreme, but this is literally someone's main source of income that is being fucked with here; Wayne dedicated himself to building DIYorDIE and perfecting his recipes and offering them as concentrates full time. That's his rent that someone is cutting into, his meals, his bills.

IDK, man. I guess this just the latest shady event in a long string of shitty things that people in the DIY community have done. I've lost all faith that this community is, or ever was any better than the mainstream vape community that we have tried so hard not to be. I guess I'm just over it, and this was the last straw.

1 points

by Tiptup300almost 9 years ago

.....I disagree. I don't blame the company. If I put out my recipe I'm open sourcing it, people can do with it what they want.

This company still has to make a product, they aren't selling the recipe, they're selling VG, PG, Nicotine, & flavorings. They're selling the shipping, the service. The recipe is the art. The art isn't a product. Selling art purely as a product is repugnant to me. Wayne may have "wasted" his life work creating such great art that brought him no money, but I don't see it that way. It inspired a ton of people.

I don't see this as shady. I see this as a boon. A way for people to put value on their art. I hate popularity being the weight turns the ocean.

I totally see what you're saying and I understand your sentiment. I just both agree and disagree.

1 points

by Tiptup300almost 9 years ago

But I 100% agree that I would love to see the company have some system in place to have some sort of "Verified" mixers system. /u/vapechemy please make this happen.

You'll have my respect along with many others. It will show that you genuinely care about the community and the effect you have on it.

1 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

So just to inform you on the progress of this first dispute: As per our claim resolution process - I have tried to contact both parties. /u/enyawreklaw was very forthcoming and explained his positions, however, the other party did not respond at all (suprise, suprise). Therefore we have removed the offending recipes and have suspended his account. We have also cancelled two orders which had those recipes in, and informed the parties which had ordered those recipes, that we will not be able to fulfil the order. The third buyer contacted us to cancel the order with these recipes we have removed the recipes from the site.

It took us a bit longer than we expected, because we had anticipated stolen recipes, but we never thought somebody would actually try to impersonate other user.

When we started out on this project our initial idea was to do initial pre-import from ELF and other sources and to assign those recipes to pre-created author accounts. However at the time we decided not to do so, as we thought that the community might see this as stealing those recipes and forcing them into our website. We are now reevaluating if this might be something which we actually will have to implement; what do you guys think?

1 points

by skiddlzninjaalmost 9 years agoThat one moderator. You know, the honey guy.

For Wayne and I, we have a large user base to keep check on people stealing our recipes, and I think that's really the best defense. A way that you could implement this is to just have a report button somewhere on the profile page, and require a description when a user reports. Allow your site to self-regulate.

I don't think just importing recipes and creating accounts for possible users is a very good idea. You face the riskof interfering with possible business (the reason Wayne was alerted so quickly is because he sells his own line of concentrates, and the fraudulent user was essentially stealing money) I know that a lot of advanced users are in talks for their own concentrate lines, and I wouldn't want this to become a recurring incident.

Then you run the risk of a user never even hearing of you guys, and the money made from imported recipes never gets to them, painting you in a bad light.

1 points

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

Ok, report button for user profile and specific recipe sounds like a valid idea - will look how we can implement it in a way which would not confuse users who have come to the site to buy recipes and by the presence of the button by every recipe might think that there is something inherently wrong with the recipes.

As to the import - there could actually be two approaches: one would be to import them as public; the other could be to import as private, secured recipes and still perform copyprotection checks against them; informing user, that the identity check is required to claim the recipes.

1 points

by Macon7almost 9 years ago

I think you should take a good look at youtube and their current situation with claiming videos. There has been a lot of problem with how the money are handled while a dispute is ongoing, how easy it is to falsely claim something and where the incentives lies for the creator and claimer.

My best suggestion would be to freeze the money on a newly submitted recipe for the first month or two, and if a claim arises and is resolved in that time the correct author gets all the money generated during the time the false author had the recipe up.

And the same freezing of assets would occur during a claim until it is settled.

by PM_ME_YOUR_BUTTCHECKalmost 9 years ago

Question about the Cigalike/Tank/RDA option, is that the flavoring percentage?

Here's how I think it works:

  • Recipe = 10%
  • Tank = 10%
  • Cigalike = 11.5% (10% + 15% of 10%)
  • RDA = 8.5% (10% - 15% of 10%)

Yes, exactly

Too add to this, when the recipe is added you can select what it was tested on so if it was an RDA then the baseline for the +-% is the RDA.

Plus who says this doesn't just supplement selling juice to friends?

I feel like this will be a better gauge of which recipes I make are good or bad. All my friends just buy what's half price at the time.

I understand that at the face value it seems a small share; on the other hand - in order for this to go big (which would then benefit both - our company and the mixers), we will have to spend hell lot of money on getting the actual customers to our site. I don't want to end up in the situation where we are not able to reach full potential of this project only because we have cornered ourselves cashflow wise.

After some discussion and admittedly some reluctance, this post was allowed by the mod team. OP knew this was a little outside of the normal realm of this sub and gave his case for why it might be of interest, so we agreed.

I just wanted to say - that we have been very positively surprised by the constructive feedback and criticism we are getting. You run a great community here.

Why reinvent the wheel? Might be easier to simply partner with ATF or the like. I understand your business proposition, but I really don't see how you intend to add value as yet another recipe repository, outside of the monetization.

Whats your commitment to users if/when the business fails? Are you going to keep recipes available even when you stop producing juices? That's a pretty big thing that would have me hesitating, when you try doing a few things at once, any single point of failure easily results in a domino effect.

From the regulatory standpoint, what's your plan for handling 8/8 fda regs? These are all net new products. Is this entire venture speculative to the point of only being successful if the deeming act gets backed out?

As regards the regulation - we are concerned only regarding the US market, as we are based in EU, we have whole lot of other regulations and legal shebang to adhere to. Regarding both of the regulations, and EU's tobacco products directive in particular - we see that there is currently a loophole, as these are referring to products, rather than services. Still - I expect to have quite a regulatory fight there.

Sorry for assuming you were in the US! Yup, both of our regulatory environments are somewhat hostile and uncertain right now.

Isn't the normal "agency model" for IP 30/70 IP Holder/IP Distributor? You would find much more interest at a more attractive rate.

A good recipe is like a good song: many like it but none the same.

It is for the profit share. We were offering a revenue share. Getting to 30/70 or even 50/50 would require a price increase to allow for that cost; and this I believe would drive down the volume significantly.

Just my feedback: The idea of this is fascinating upon viewing the site. Also seemingly good execution. My concerns echo what was said before about recipes easily being stolen from people who do not partake in social sites such as Reddit and other forums but do post their recipes on ELR, .1ml, etc. Unlikely? Sure. But still possible for a group that fits that description.

As for my questions,

  1. Will the copy protection flag someone who simply copied a "base" and added their own 1-2 unique flavor addition?
  2. What are your plans for advertising and increasing overall successful sales on the site?
  3. Will there ever be an option for the author to "hide" the recipe percentages? I feel like most people would simply order the appropriate elements if they like a recipe rather than keep ordering from the site.
  4. What about clones of existing marketplace juice? I assume there is some legal risk with that.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Thanks for the insightful questions. First off regarding protection: when we started building this, we thought of doing a preimport from ELF and assigning them to author accounts, so the recipes would be included in our copy protection mechanism and authors would be able to automatically claim them in the future, if they decide so. However at the time we thought that this would be seen as overly aggressive business practice by the community and we decided against it. It might be a time to reconsider this. We are still putting together final strategy.

Now as to the questions:

  1. No, our current CP model compares original ingredients and their proportions within certain thresholds. We did this to allow to created "inspired by" recipes, while still removing obvious copies.
  2. We have started with introducing this site to the authors; we think it is the best approach to make everyone feel comfortable and address any issues, before going guns blazing with marketing to the general vaping cloud. We plan to steadily increase commercial communication starting beginning of next year.
  3. No - we wanted to stay true to "know what you inhale" mantra which we have internally.
  4. This is something which will require manual effort on our side. I don't see right now how this could be automated.

Alright, this definitely seems interesting. Congrats on your year smoke free!

6% does seem like a bit low. I know there are huge costs in basically construing the entire supply, production and distribution network, but also thousands of manhours and months, plus supplies costs can go into developing a recipe.

What's really concerning me here is the authorship theft and how is it handled? Could you please elaborate the process? I don't seem to notice a report button in recipes on the website?

Also I believe the +15/0/-15 flavour percentage labels are a bit confusing and out of place. At first I was a little confused until I figured out this was adjusting flavour percentages (firstly I assumed it was nicotine levels) and then I don't think it's appropriate considering the confusion it might create in users.

A recipe might've been designed for an RDA and not need any further adjustment of the flavour percentages. And I think those values are just too broad to consider the implications in different recipes.

It's a good idea as an option, but you should rather leave it to the author of the recipe to decide what values to leave there, and if he should be leaving any place for adjustment at all. Does it affect the overall price?

edit: Generally what's the position with authorship theft on this considering the recipes are made public on the website they are posted anyway? I'm really curious of hearing the opinions of mixers like /u/Enyawreklaw

/u/skiddlzninja you seem to be pretty outspoken against this, however how does this translate into copyright law? Don't get me wrong, I am against taking someone's recipe and start selling it for profit without cutting him in. However how is this translated into publicly posted recipes that are derived from any claims the second they are made public? For example: You can actually sell Linux, you just need to attach the licence and the original author of the software. For e-liquid recipes posted here, this doesn't even apply.

And most importantly, you can catch someone stealing your recipe on Vapechemy by looking over the ingredients, how do you know a retailer hasn't quietly started selling your recipe? This can translate into many different situations, but he has every right to do so if the recipe was made public?

If you check my recipes on all the flavors, you'll see that I have put licenses on my recipes, much like your linux analogy. For someone to repost my recipes, they have to attribute me, and share the original license on my recipes. Same as if they take the recipe and just tweak a number, or add a minor ingredient. And if they want the recipe for commercial use, they have to contact me for permission.

That's about as much protection as we can give our recipes, unless we spend the money to also trademark the recipe names.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Since you seem to be the first mixer I'm talking to that seems to have an understanding of this, I hope you don't mind me asking -- if you've licensed your recipes why are you against vapechemy then? Sure, it's yet another place to look out for, but how does that beat private people stealing your recipes? In vapechemy's case can't you at least more easily notice and prove it?

Oh no, I'm not against vapechemy in any way. I screened them and their service before they were allowed to make this post, and have endorsed them to a lot of the mixers that look to me for information. I think a service like this goes a long way to bringing more integrity and legitimacy to the hobby, and will help develop the hobby in a very big way. I just need to be sure they do their diligence to protect their users properly and prevent fraudulent accounts.

I think what they're doing is phenomenal. There's a lot of great mixers out there who have no plans on trying to sell, or monetize, their recipes. But this gives them a quick an easy option to make a few quick bucks and maybe cover costs, with a quick and easy sign up. I really just hope that they have a strong screening process so fraudulent accounts don't occur. But if this goes well, I can see this company being an integral part of the mixing ecosystem.

No offense but get bent with this shit. Take it to classifieds or something.

by vapechemyalmost 9 years ago

No offence taken. The reason why I took it here was to get a feedback; and typically the classifieds are not the place where to request feedback from. That being said, the suggestion of "being bent" is a feedback as well. I will try to look how and if I can include this in my roadmap.

Trough the top where there are G+; FB and twitter icons. We decided not to store any usernames and passwords (everyone have too much of those already) and can use whichever third party they like to authenticate themselves. I guess most of you would prefer Gmail with some semi-fake email address.

No need for the hostility. T.H.I.N.K. before you speak. Is it true, honest, inspiring, nice or kind. The world has enough negativity as it is and this sub does not need it. It needs constructive criticism and positive reinforcement of new ideas and innovation. This sub is meant to offer help to one another and what it sounds like is this company can do that. Some people may want to make a little extra $$$ on a recipe that is currently not making any revenue, others may not. But it should be an open discussion by all and not simply just a shut down.
