Tobacco sweetness
submitted almost 9 years ago by kindground

When smelling tobacco blends in a shop or smelling the concentrates I have on hand, they smell slightly sweet. When tasted, that sweetness isn't there.

I know I may be committing a cardinal sin by asking this question and may offend some tobacco purists, but I'll ask anyway. What do you use to sweeten up your tobacco recipes just slightly and overcome the inherent "dryness" of tobacco flavors?

I've noticed a few recipes that use butterscotch, sweet creams, and even meringues to overcome this and bring out the sweetness in the tobaccos.

I'd like to bring a touch of sweetness and cure that dryness a little bit in my recipes. I don't want to break the barrier and go full on dessert vape. I'd just like to make the mixes a little more palatable while staying truly tobacco forward.

TFA Toasted Marshmallow at 2% adds volume and sweetness which complements tobacco. Alternatively, you could also use Ethyl Maltol or TFA Cotton Candy at 1%. It helps with dryness and also adds a tad of sweetness to the mix. I would suggest other things like butterscotch, caramel, etc but as you mentioned, you do not want to go into dessert territory. Both sweeteners above are fairly neutral and will not interfere with the tobacco in any way or form.

Great. I have some EM. I'll put toasted Marshmallow in my next order. I know you recommended TFA, is that the brand you find to be the best?

EDIT... Words

It's odd... now that you mentioned it, I honestly don't know any other flavoring vendor that does a toasted marshmallow. I know flavour west has a marshmallow, but it's not toasted. You could also try Flavourarts marshmallow or even Capella. They all are pretty useful and versatile.

FW has a toasted marshmallow, it's sold at BCF.

I highly recommend Vanilla Bourbon from INW at like .5%. It will add hints of vanilla with some brown sugar sweetness. The Bourbon is fairly mild, but I find it enhances the tobacco notes from INW RY4. I imagine it would do what you are looking for, so long as you don't mind a little sweetness. Don't go above .75% though or it could add more sweetness than you might like.

There's no Bourbon alcohol in Vanilla Bourbon. It's just in the name.

Go figure. I guess it's just psychosomatic, hence why it always seemed mild, not really there. Thanks for the heads up. I still highly reccomend it though for pairing with tobacco.

Sometimes I use dark fruits or light creams at a lower percentage. Caramel, butterscotch, and most booze flavors make for decent compliments as well, but honestly, I can't think of a tobacco flavor that wasn't at least mildly sweet by itself.

EDIT: As always, you should probably state what flavor(s) you're using and at what % if you want specific or decent help.

I'm using mostly the INW for pipe line. Black for pipe, dark for pipe, black cherry for pipe. I also have FA desert ship.

I've got recipes that use TFA Toasted Marshmallow and INW Vanilla Bourbon. I think they both help quite a bit with the dryness. May also look in to Super Concentrates Honey Flue Cured. It's been a long time since I've used it, but it was a nice sweet flavor. More honey than tobacco, but I used to have a really simple juice I made with the SC Blended Tobacco, and it mixed really well with it.

I also like TFA Graham Cracker Clear with some tobaccos.

Fig makes for a great sort of sweet musty fruity note in tobaccos. I would recommend either FLV Fig or Delosi Fig for a good fig; FA's is a bit too bright, CAP's doesn't quite hit the right notes, and FLV Sweet Fig isn't much different than the regular fig (slightly lighter and slightly sweeter).

I've thought about fig and raisin. Thanks for the info on the fig concentrates.

Raisin is a good idea, FLV Oatmeal Raisin would probably make a really good accent to a tobacco -- I might just have to try mixing something like this up lol.

Try a dark chocolate and tobacco mix it's really smooth and aromatic sweet but not too sweet

My favorite (and most popular) tobacco flavor has caramel and vanilla. They seem to blend well with tobacco. Adjust the amounts of each depending on how dominant you want the tobacco.

Custard.

I have a bottle of each so I can vary it as I like.

Plenty of ideas here.

If the recipe has a very small amount of total flavors , 3 is best 5 at most. A touch of ethyl maltol - 0.5% or below (it tends to mute or muddy things in excess)

Otherwise yeh - dessert type flavors. Im rather fond of tfa sweet cream and marshmallow myself
