Have you ever tried to re-create a commercially available juice, and made something that you actually enjoy more than the original?
submitted almost 9 years ago by nomer2

If so, what juice were you trying to re-create, and what recipe did you come up with?

I'm new to DIY and anything I try to clone always ends up way off. Just curious if any of these mistakes have ever ended up with a pleasant surprise for any of you.

I spent a good few months trying to crack Charlie Chalk Dust Head Banging Boogey.

I bought a 15ml bottle so I could taste test it every now and again and see of I was on track. I'm now own a lot of different Blueberry concentrates while o was trying to track down the right one, I settled on CAP Blueberry in the end. One day I vaped my latest mix and then dripped some of the original and decided that I liked mine more.

Did you by any chance get some inspiration from my clone attempt on ELR? :)

I noticed a few similarities

I've just taken a look and yes I did. That was my jumping off point. After reading through the comments I'm going to try adding some citric acid to see if it enhances the Blueberry.

Wooooo that makes me feel great haha

I'll have to try your creation after I get some CAP BB :)

I just mixed my 99th version of a clone I'm working on. They're all terrible until I get it right. There can't be anything better than Saratoga.

Blessed art thou, Saratoga, king of the juice, for delivering the fruit of the vape.

Most of the mother's milk clones are just as, if not, better than the original.

That and my personal looper clone just because it doesn't taste like lemon pledge.

What is it? If you don't mind of course

Super simple.

TPA VBIC - 7%

FLV Cream - 1.5%

FA Fresh Cream - 3%

FW Fruit Rings - 1%

TPA Strawberry Ripe - 3%

TPA Smooth - 0.1%

Nice! Thank you. Simple recipes are often times the best.

Prairie by Bigglesworth Labs is the perfect example. Jay the founder spent months tinkering with the clone recipe for Grizzly Vapes' Nannerbear. Eventually he found something that not only had the same exact taste, it also was not as sweet and didn't gunk coils as often

by RinVapesalmost 9 years ago

That's one of the main reasons I DIY... because commercial juice is too damn sweet/loaded with sweetener. I hate dark wicks and gunky coils!!

I'm just lazy and buy from companies who don't use sweetners. Mostly been using a lot of BX, Biggles and adirondack

Kind of? I started off trying to clone a house juice called Fiji from Dragonfly E-cig in Lewisville, Texas, and wound up with Strap-On. But, that was only after I gave up that attempt and just adjusted the flavors I was messing with to fit my taste better than Fiji could.

I bet finding an image for that recipe was fun.

Not as much fun as finding the ones for sharing /u/Coop34's Kiwi Bourbon and Kiwi Cheesecake recipes that he encouraged me post on ATF. I never knew there was so much muppet porn.

Every time basically. I will then even further refine it to my tastes.

Anything I make with TFA cake batter is better than any cake flavor I've ever bought.

10 points

by thedirtyprojectoralmost 9 years agoMixologist

TFA has no cake batter. You mean Capella.

1 points

by Secti0n31almost 9 years ago

You are correct, it is CAP cake batter. Was trying to replicate HHV's "gooey butter cake" and everything I've made is way better.

mind sharing a good cake batter recipe?

by thedirtyprojectoralmost 9 years agoMixologist

Here is ITC's Spoonlicka.

Capella Sweet Strawberry - 5%

Capella Cake Batter - 5%

Capella Vanilla Custard v1 - 5%

Add sweetener to taste.

5-10% Cake batter is great by itself, but I'll add another 5-10% of TFA Caramel Candy or English toffee and 1-2% of DX sweet cream or butter cream, hell sometimes all of the above, but never more than 10% cake batter, that'd just be ridiculous.

Will also mix cake batter with DX vanilla cupcake for more of a "white" cake. Cake batter by itself is more of a yellow cake. Would love to figure out a way to add some frosting to one of these mixes too.

I'm still learning, and still winging it, so my recipe's aren't perfect, or specific. Sorry.

ill try it by itself, then depending on the taste i might add some cream cheese icing

I tried to clone melonlyptus but ended up with something far superior. I think I've gone through two liters of my stuff so far.

2 points

by LimeDrivealmost 9 years ago

Is Melonlyptus melons with eucalyptus, which also adds menthol?

Sounds amazing.

5 points

by Werewolfdadalmost 9 years ago

Several melons, eucalyptus with mint, and koolada.

I should really post the recipe this weekend when I'm home.

That would be awesome if you shared. Thanks! I'm currently mixing a wannabe version of Watermelon Crack.

That sounds incredible! Don't forget to post please.

It helps to think that you are merely looking for something similar to the original eliquid, not an exact replica. I've only tasted one or two clones that actually tasted identical to the original.

April Moon (Alice in Vapeland) I used their (AIV's) apricot extract, which I think is crucial but even then, my mixture is not identical but still good and does taste similar. http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/842006/April+Moon-ish

Andromeda is a fairly easy one but I went based off someone else's recipe and tweaked percentages and brands. http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/489755/DadRonmeda

Animal Clone (but better, IMO) http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/233481/Red%20Vines%20 (don't remember the original creator of this recipe, this is a variant of it)

funny enough i have a clone for watermelon crack by bx vapor. which in itself started as a clone for cosmic fog. and i think i enjoy mine better. i can control the menthol and add it right before a 60ml bottle and it sticks around longer.

by surfishermanalmost 9 years ago

Vurve makes a killer "Watermelon Crack" clone . If Jungle Juice DID NOT have so much menthol it would be my ADV for life .

I hate menthol anything lol.

2 points

by GGATHELMILalmost 9 years ago

really? i dont get a menthol smell. it smells like grapes. tastes like grape jolly rancher too. yes i sampled the straight flavorings but like super small drops. i know i shouldnt but didnt want to waste since i was on a budget and jumped right into DIY

Some people are more sensitive to some flavours than others. I mixed a Donut recipe that contained FA Biscuit and for me it was too prominent, I was getting much more biscuit than donut. I haven't found anybody else that has the same problem.

I tried to reduce the biscuit percentage but it broke the recipe it was already well balanced but didn't work for me. It's a shame as it was a recipe I was excited about.

by thedirtyprojectoralmost 9 years agoMixologist

That's odd. I feel like the menthol in jungle juice could be kicked up a notch.

Wow, that would be a no go for me lol. It looks like your Strawberry Milk is very popular on that French DIY site .

i either got a bad batch or someone rebottled the wrong flavor because i get basically NO menthol from my bottle of jungle juice. what i do get is flowers. lots and lots of flowers.

Care to share the recipe?

I purchase Kiss the Ring from /u/bombies exclusively. It is my white whale. I have hundreds of flavors from almost every available vendor and can't seem to nail it.

I can usually put clones together fairly easily after tasting a juice in B&M's but this one....no luck. I've had a few pleasant surprises cloning popular juices but for the most part I don't really try to clone anymore. (except for ktr which I try at least 1 or 2 attempts per week).

Have you tried the clone in this subreddit? It's in the sidebar, clone recipes part 4 I think.

by RedDread1973almost 9 years ago

Thanks, I have. I've also played around with 100's of attempts. Appreciate the suggestion though. Also dug up some comments made by bombies himself regarding custards to see if that would provide some direction but no avail.
