New First Order Flavors + First Order Recipes
submitted almost 9 years ago by ID10-T

Howdy, mixers! Friendly neighborhood junior moderator here with a plan to give brand-new mixers a head start and highlight some of our favorite simple recipes.

The "First Order Flavors" list is in need of an update. It's based on a survey from over 9 months ago, which is at least a couple of years in DIY time. How many new flavors have been introduced or "discovered" since then? How many new mixers and new recipes have been created since then?

But it's also got a fundamental flaw in addition to being out of date. We are telling first-time mixers to order these flavors, but we're not telling them what to make with them. So we're creating a bunch of "what can I make with these flavors?" posts or, if people are too independent or shy to ask for help, some real work and real headaches for people who should just be experiencing the simplicity, joy, and financial benefit of making their own e-juice for the first time, not struggling with which % of which flavors to combine in their very first few bottles.

So here's the deal. Same general type of contest-mode thread as this one, but with a twist.

Along with each flavor you suggest for the new "My First Order" list, please suggest a previously published (here, or on ATF or ELR) and praised simple recipe (5 flavors maximum, but remember, the goal is simple, 2 or 3 or 4 flavor recipes would be even better), along with a list of flavors used in that recipe. Each and every one of these flavors used in these recipes should be flavors that you'd expect to find on a list of first-order flavors - we want to give new mixers the most versatile flavors that can be used to make a variety of great recipes, not flavors that they'll only use in one thing and then not know what to do with. Think of it this way: You're nominating the flavor. The recipe(s) offered is to make your case for including this flavor. We're not voting for recipe of the year, here. We're voting for recipes that should be mentioned alongside Mustard Milk when someone who's never ordered a flavor before wants to know what they should order and what they can make with what they order.

The format is "Manufacturer, Flavor, Recipe by RecipeCreator with Link To Recipe, List of Other ingredients in Recipe." For example, if I wanted to suggest that FA Kiwi should be on such a list, along with Coop's Kiwi Bourbon recipe, I'd post, "FA Kiwi. Coop's Kiwi Bourbon by /u/Coop34. FA Kiwi, TFA Kentucky Bourbon, TFA Toasted Marshmallow."

All top-level posts should have this format or will be removed, but replies to the posts are encouraged and can be whatever you want to say that doesn't otherwise break some kind of rule such as the one about instigating violence.

Post as many flavors as you like (separately, not in one comment), with as many qualifying recipes for each flavor as you want to share. Make the case that this is a flavor that should be on every newbie's first order because of how many simple, delicious recipes you can make with it and other "universal" flavors.

If someone has already posted your flavor, but you have a different recipe, post the flavor again with the recipe of your choice.

The contest mode will be enabled until I go 72 hours without any top level responses, and then I'll unveil the voting results and create a My First Order + My First Recipe post for the sidebar: 30 top flavors, along with as many recipes as we can get that use only those flavors. Yes, that means if your recipes include flavors that don't make the top 30, they won't be on the list. Each vote for flavor is a vote for each of the flavors used in the recipes posted along with it.

Thank you for participating and helping new mixers. I love you all. I'll also make a stickied comment for feedback (so you can tell me what a stupid idea this, how stupid I am, etc).

That'll do. I wanted to have one flavor listed first but it really does not matter, because each mention + upvote is a vote for all the flavors listed.

I have no idea how stiff the "competition" for this will be, but if you want to improve Best Damn Pink Lemonade by /u/Vurve's chances, make separate posts for any other simple recipes with feedback that you like or can find that use LA Lemonade, Raspberry Sweet, Strawberry Ripe, or FA Lemon Sicily.

It really is. I mixed up some of this to throw around the vapers at the office and see if we liked it a few weeks ago.

We likes it so much I've been mixing it non-action for us since then. Just mixed myself 120mls of it just yesterday!

I have now idea how much "competition" we're facing here, but I'm pretty sure Mustard Milk and Nana Cream Clone are going to make the cut regardless. However, if you want to improve their chances, find other simple recipes with feedback that use TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, LA Banana Cream, and TFA Dragonfruit and post those.

Yup, will do.

Yeah, agree, that's why I was going to post them, for that sweet, sweet comment karma haha. I'd say those two recipes are probably the two best overall recipes to come out of this sub.

I'm a beginner myself so I have no idea if these recipes are 'balanced' like the ones the rest of you do you... But I have used Fuji in a couple of very basic mixes and been very happy with the results!

Mixed at max VG, so may need to lower for PG mixes -

Strawapple:

8% TFA strawberry (Ripe) 4% FA Fuji

Kiwappleberry:

4% FA Kiwi 4% FA Fuji 6% TFA Strawberry (Ripe)

Standalone: 6%

2 points

by drumbtralmost 9 years ago

Fuji is an awesome standalone flavor, it's very full, as well as a second use for adding sweetness or boosting fruits much like Dragonfruit. Even throwing it in like 4% LA Lemonade makes a great green apple lemonade.

Those recipes look great BTW! Keep up the mixing my dude!

I can't upvote this. I'm proud of that recipe but I'm just not sure about those INW lemon flavors as "new mixer" flavors and if the goal is versatile flavors, what else are they going to do with them besides make my other lemonade recipe? But leave it, because it counts as votes for TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and FA Fresh Cream too.

3 points

Just bought those lemons about a week ago and mixed up Frosted Lemonade. I'd trade all my Strawberry flavors for those 2 lemons if I had the chance to do it again.

1 points

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

Vote it up if you want it on the list. I just couldn't do it despite feeling the same as you about countless strawberries vs those two lemons, because strawberries give noobs a lot of things they can mix. It's my bad, really, for not coming up with more lemon recipes yet. We'll have to revisit this again in 6 to 12 months, how about by then YOU have a recipe or two using those INW lemons that can go on a list such as this?

2 points

point taken. i forgot about fresh cream in the excitement. lemon does seem like it can be a difficult flavor to work with, but really and without sucking up maybe more people with these flavors will inspire more lemony recipes.

VBIC was the first flavor i ordered in a size larger than 30ml. it pairs with damn near any fruit and is a great with cakes, creams, and fruits. lately i've just been mixing with just one other fruit. Billberry, pineapple, strawberry ripe, i'm waiting for FA White peach to arrive so i can see how well it pairs with that.

1 points

2 points

by Boondocalmost 9 years ago

well see what had happened was... i was bored waiting for my gf one day and i made up a couple of 10 ml testers with vbic at 3% and random fruits at whatever the most common single flavor percentage was. i didn't take notes because i figured it's been done before and really i was just doing it for shiggles. i do remember FA Pomegranate showing promise but needed more but i finished the bottle with that mix and haven't ordered anymore. VBIC and LA watermelon was weird. not in a bad way but in a i don't think i want to make that again way. when my pg/vg restock gets here i'll probably try it again.

/u/chrisdvr1 and yes that's an awesome recipe.

2 points

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

Not only does that one have too many ingredients to be considered a simple recipe, but it requires TFA Butter, which probably, in my opinion, isn't a must-have flavor. You're right about INW Biscuit though, it's a staple, I'll look for some simplier recipes that use it. And that recipe is one that everyone should try at some point; I suspect it won't take new mixers long to discover ATF's most popular recipe of all time get whatever stuff they still need to make it that wasn't on the first order, if the profile interests them.

2 points

by boomdog07almost 9 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

Yessir, I knew it was outside the limits and I was searching for some others that used Biscuit and couldn't seem to find any but I seem to need it all the time!! Maybe just the profile that I chase after or something who the hell knows.

I know Sugar Cookie, Meringue, and Biscuit belong --- but do you think FA Joy should be on a list of first-timer flavors, or is essentially another TFA Butter... more like a second-order flavor?

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

Do you have any other easy tobacco recipes to add? We need some on here and that is a good one, but I'm not sure how well this one will fare because although Almond and Caramel are staples, I'm not sure about MTS Vape Wizard on a list of first-orders.

/u/BobbySavage , /u/T_mace - you guys have any other tobacco recipes to add that would be good for brand-new mixers? Or do you just wanna come upvote this one? Somehow tobacco needs to be represented on this list, don't you think? It's possible that the only way to make sure that happens is for tobacco heads to band together.

3 points

by T_Macealmost 9 years agoresident tobacco specialist

I'll add Pistachio RY4. The major problem is that unless the new mixer is a serious tobacco lover, none of the flavs I would recommend would suit them. They're all somewhat obscure and fairly unusable for any application besides tobacco. So I'm adding PRY4 cuz it's the only one I vape aside from Marble 27 that uses flavorings that cross over into the dessert category.

Maybe a "First Order For Hardcore Tobacco Heads" post needs to be put together. I can start working on that, surely the rest of the heads will have things to add as well.

2 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 9 years agoresident tobacco specialist

I would have loved to see that list when I first started. I had to go through about 15 failed attempts with TFA and Seedman tobaccos to realize I needed to try INW and FA.

2 points

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

That is very true. That's why there's no tobacco on the current "My First Order" list. Just not a broad enough appeal. But, at least, /u/BobbySavage 's epic beginner's guide is immortalized in the sidebar ABOVE the MFO list, and it does address tobacco in the post and the comments. Plus there's the tobacco compilation review now in the flavor review wiki as well... and we can hope that anyone who hopes to join the ranks of DIY hardcore tobacco heads would be intrepid enough to go looking for that and find it.

Most of my tobacco recipes include things like FA Black Fire or Latakia, which I think could also be some tricky ones for new mixers. A little too much and it's all ruined. I only have one of my own recipes that uses RY4 Double, which is probably a good beginner flavor, but I don't have it anywhere other than a Reddit comment. Unless that would be fine?

2 points

1 points

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

I don't think it's going to win anyway. There just aren't enough other good recipes using it to call it a versatile, MFO list kind of flavor. Trying to get people the most easy recipes with the fewest ingredients.

Add the other flavors in PRY4 to your comment when you get a chance. It'll make it easier to count up at the end and it will count as votes for those other flavors too.

Too many flavors with too few other uses (FA Black Cherry?) to go on this kind of very short list of first-order flavors and simple recipes to update the "My First Order" list in the sidebar. But Pebbles will always come up every time someone mentions cereal. It will probably be recipe of the year or at the very least be in the running for that. It will get plenty of exposure for people on the hunt for a good cereal vape to find it. People probably have, and probably will, start doing DIY just to make it.

Fruit rings. Yuck.

Isn't it crazy that CAP Sugar COokie isn't on the current MFO list? How did that even happen?

Great idea. I'll have to wait until tonite to post. What if the full recipe is just dropped here, without linking? Some dinosaurs still prefer the calculator on their desktop:)

Thanks. I'm really looking for recipes that multiple people have tried and will vouch for, not brand-new recipes created for this purpose. So, there should be something to link to SOMEWHERE.

But, if you just want to post the recipe, go for it. If enough people try it and upvote it, it'll get included. Maybe wait until /u/kirkt posts the December recipe thread, post it there, and link to that?

Gotcha. Recipes with feedback.

So, are we, as mixers/users, supposed to upvote what we think should be included? Or will the mods just tally-up the number of times a flavor has been mentioned in their own post? I see TFA Strawberry Ripe being posted a couple of times, but should I upvote both of them?

I really should have taken the time to figure out a way to make this clearer, more concise, and easier. But you have gotten the gist of it, I think.

Upvote all the nominations of Strawberry Ripe (for example) that include recipes that you think should be recommended to first-time mixers. Don't upvote ones that include recipes that you don't think should be on that list.

When it's all said and done, I'll tally up every mention of every ingredient here, add 1 upvote = 1 point, and keep the top 30. Then I'll list every recipe posted here that you can make using only those 30 flavors, and then I'll update the "My First Order" list to include both "My First Order" and "My First Recipes."

Was this explanation helpful? Do you think I should edit this post to include this clarification?

Ah, ok, that's more clear. This is a complicated endeavor, so don't feel at all bad in any way if things need more clarification.

Adding up both number of times a flavor is posted, along with how many upvotes that flavor has received is a daunting task! I wonder if there is a way to simplify the tallying-up... like, instead of counting both mentions and upvotes, we can just relegate it to one or the other? Just thinking of not only simplifying the process for users, but also for the mods who are doing the counting in the end...

Edit: if it does come to choosing to count either mentions or upvotes, I suggest upvotes, as it is the easiest way the community can give their input on a flavor.

Edit2: oops, I see that's exactly what you're going to do!

There's some good stuff in here so far.

Yes there is, I just wish I'd made the post easier to understand, maybe thought of a simpler way of doing it.

Someone brought up a point via PM, that "It's a lot of work to find and include the recipes."

It is a lot of work to find and include the recipes!!! And yet, we expect someone who has never done this before to go do it for themselves???

by ChevelloKDalmost 9 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Kind of makes the point.

The post is a lot of words, but I don't see any way to make it simpler. I have no idea how the tallying works, so it had to be a way that makes that easy too.

Thanks. It's going to be a pain in the ass to tally up but I couldn't think of a better way to make sure all the people had an opportunity to suggest/approve all the flavors and recipes.

Seeing the rise of popularity with simpler recipes again, I feel like we need to get a community vetted list of simple recipes again and not just "first order recipes". It would also be nice to make it clear that people should experiment with the percentages to get a liquid where they want it to be - everyone has slightly different vaping setups.

You don't think this post from three months ago is recent enough? It hasn't been archived yet & can still be commented on, so I think it's recent enough... Once it is six months old I think it will definitely be time for someone to revisit this topic.

Yep, I agree, about the importance and benefit of customizing your juice to fit your own tastes and setup. That should be made clear to beginners in any guide they read. I might figure out how to mention it in the updated "my first order/my first recipes" once this thing is done.

I don't know how much difference all of this is going to make, if any. Are first-time mixers really going to look at this list, order these flavors, and make these recipes? Or is a great majority of them still going to go to Wizard Labs, order a seemly bizarre hodgepodge of flavors, and then post "what can I make with this?" or worse, go at it alone, get discouraged, and give up? Only time will tell. But it's worth a shot, right?

Thanks for pointing out that thread, I must have missed it even though I browse the sub regularly. Still, I think the better way of doing it would be to collect those recipes and make a better organized post with links to ATF and/or ELR.

As for your question, I do think it's worth a shot. One thing to keep in mind is that simpler recipes are a good way of conveying what flavors work well together, and what is a good starting point to determining how much should be used. IMO most people who DIY aren't interested in trying to come up with original recipes, they are here to make good tasting e-liquids for cheap. When I first started mixing I definitely read the shit out of this sub before starting at all, so I would say it'll definitely help and reward those who choose to do their research - it doesn't mean it'll magically make the other type of people just dive in think otherwise.

Ninja Edit: Also, if you need help doing to busy work of putting those recipes into ELR or ATF, I would be willing to help.

Awesome initiative !

I'm always more excited to mix simple stuff than complex one as i feel like tweaking it will give me more knowledge and understandings of flavors that i'm using. I guess it's a beginner thing to say but it's really helpful ! Thanks

Thank you! Please vote for the flavors & recipes that you think are best for beginners and don't vote for the ones you don't think should be on the short list.

Nah, I get excited about simpler stuff too. Mostly because I look at them and see so many possibilities in them.
