Personal preference is not the only thing that makes taste subjective
submitted almost 9 years ago by TogiraIkonoka0618Proud Sidebar Reader!

I know that everybody's personal preferences and even differences in how we actually perceive different flavors effect how we enjoy or don't enjoy different recipes.

I have also recently found how much changing things in your personal setup can drastically effect how you taste certain recipes. Also if you are mixing for other people, how their set up can change how they taste it. I am talking about things down to something as small as a different drip tip.

This is my current setup i use for tasting flavors and new recipes. 1,2,3.. When i was trying different tips i just thought i got more flavor from a small bore tip but it might have not just been more flavor, it could be that it was just bringing out more of the flavors that i enjoy.

I decided i wanted to try the Derringer with a single fused clapton coil like i do on my RTA (on my RTA i run duel 8 wrap 28/36 fused claptons) instead of my duel 13wrap 26g wire i had installed. I tried a Dutch Apple Pie recipe I am working on and all i got was a apple top note instead of a deeper apple cinnamon and crust flavor. I have since switched out back to my round wire build on the Derringer.

I have also been working on a remix of Normandy (a banana cream and vanilla wafer eliquid). i got the idea from my local B&M and one of the woman that work there is in love with Normandy so she has been my primary tester.

On my previous visit she tested it using my setup and said the recipe was too "runty" and not enough cookie or vanilla. So i took it home, decreased both banana creams and added more cookie and vanilla. When I brought it back i had a cold so she tried it with my setup but used her much larger bore drip tip. She said i went backwards and it tasted even more "runty" than the last time.

This didn't make any sense to me so i had her try my Dutch Apple Pie recipe with her tip and then mine after I sanitized it. She said it tasted my better with mine so i tried it. With my tip i got a pretty well rounded apple pie and with hers i mainly got a sweet cinnamon flavor. I then had her try the Normandy Remix with my tip and she said it was much better and darn near spot on to the original.

So after this rather long post what i want you to get out of it is when we are making and testing certain recipes, we are essentially mixing it not only to how we taste it but to how our setup, including our device, coil build and yes even down to our drip tip ALLOWS us to taste the recipe. When we pass it on to someone else to try it whether it be by posting the recipe somewhere on the internet to mix it themselves or to whoever we may mix for, not only their personal taste but also everything that makes up their set up will effect how they taste your recipe.

Good thing that you brought this up. I remember this sort of thing used to get brought up a bit around here but haven't seen it talked about much lately.

Drip tips are more important than what a lot of people give them credit for.

Part of what gave the older Kayfuns that intense flavour was the drip tip IMO. I bought a similar style drip tip in 510 from Fasttech and using that on other atomizers makes the flavour pop almost the same as a Kayfun.

Kayfuns as well, while having an intense flavour level also seem to have a small 'bandwidth' of flavour. While it's really punchy in those middle to middle-high notes you don't always get the full spectrum of flavour.

Yeah I see alot of ppl talking about how different tanks/rta's /rda's and diffetent coils bring out the best flavor but I thought it was really interesting how the drop tip really changed it.

Thought this post could shed a little light for those who mix for other ppl when they say it tastes completely different from how you taste it. We all have our particular way we like our devices whether it be for flavor testing or regular use so we develop our recipies based on how we taste both from our devices and our own sense of taste.

Hmm, how to fit chuff cap onto Kayfun Mini V3? Must do for science.

Jk of course. Good post!

Yes, I have notice this myself when using the same build, but change out the drip tips and the difference it makes in taste.

This is really interesting. I will definitely start noting my setup when keeping tasting records for my tester recipes. On a side note I really like my derringer for tasting liquids as it seems to give me the best flavor compared to my other atomizers.

A bit off topic and pardon my amateur question but where did you pick up your drip tip?

I picked it up at my local B&M (Alohma). Unfortunately i am not sure who their supplier is.

All great points on how extraordinary it is when people come up flavours loved by so many regardless of the countless different setups being used to taste.

Very good point. How I test my flavors and mixes is that I try to mimic my target audience's setups as much as possible with my testing setups. The people whom I make liquid for are usually at 0.5ohms between 20 and 28 Watts. Airflow between halfway and fully open on Subtanks or Melo 3's. I don't dual-coil my setup, I don't go high-wattage. I try to match what they taste.

When I vape on my own, I go MTL usually (on Pico), with wide-open, higher-wattage vaping on Goblin Mini v3 (dual-coil) Crius.
