Looking for Tobacco suggestions that aren't like Desert Ship
submitted almost 9 years ago by ZepsRedRocket

Greetings wonderful DIY folks. Quick question and a little back story. trying to find a rich, dry tobacco similar to Indigo's The Duke. I've been making some tobacco juices recently and ordered FA Desert Ship amongst some others. As soon as I smelled Desert Ship I immediately gagged. THIS is the flavor that I have tried for years to avoid when purchasing pre-made tobacco juices. It's a flavoring used in Bigglesworth Labs Prairie (I think) which I find unvapeable.

To me it has this sickly cocoa butter/rose water flavor that I just can't stand. I was curious and looked up the Desert Ship MDSD and I think I found the offending chemicals:

Tetramethylpyrazine - cocoa Damascenone - rose p-cresol - "pig odor" (ha!) -from Wikipedia

Just curious what tobacco flavorings you use that would not fall into this category.

PS: other flavors I've tried INWA am4a (love it), FA perique black (strong, dirty), FA Latakia (also really strong, also dirty).

TFA - DK Tobacco TFA - Red Type TFA - RY4 Asian TFA - Turkish TFA - Western

CAP - Bold or Medium Tobacco [these may have been discontinued, but worth a pick up if you see them around]

FA - Virgina FA - Burley FA - Seven Leaves FA - Cowboy

I personally love FA - Perique but it's a touch strong for some palates. If I remember correctly, The Duke is a cigarette tobacco type of liquid. The ones I listed are all in that same profile. You can always pick your dominant tobacco note, & then back that up with RY4 to fill in the missing 'fullness', if you're going straight tobacco. Hope that helps a bit.

Seconding FA Burley and Virginia

What exactly does FA Burley taste like? Would it go well with fruits? Or is it more like a dessert tobacco

Mild dry tobacco. Good on its own but I could see it pairing well with a light fruit. It's far more subtle than a lot of tobacco's so a lot of another flavor could overpower it.

FA burley tastes like cedar wood chips to me..its horrible

That's fantastic. Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. Will definitely be checking these out.

FYI: Prairie uses TFA DK Tobacco, so you may want to cross that one off your list ;)

All the tfas are pretty crap

Disagree. A lot of vendors are using TFA. It's just how you accentuate it with other tobaccos to make it superior.

the TFA tobaccos are not as...refined as some of the FA, FLV, or INW tobaccos flavors, but i think they might fit well for what he's aiming for. I personally find them useful as bases to build off of, and everyone knows i'm a huge fan of RY4 & RY4 Double.

What is the final liquid your aiming for? Just a basic profile, I have lots of tobacco suggestions, but they don't all work for all things.

edit I overlooked the part where you said you were aiming for 'the duke'. Give me a few minutes, need to grab my flavor notebook.

Too many tobacco flavorings to just rattle off. My personal fave is RY4 Double from TPA

I also like the RY4 I just finished a bottle of ejuice with it today. I also use red type which is a bit more of a plain and nutty flavor.

I do love the RY4. Trying to step away from the sweet, caramel type for a bit but excellent advice. Thanks!

I like FLV Arabian Tobacco for more of a dry tobacco. A bit expensive but very concentrated, 0.5%-0.75% is about the range I like to stick with it

1 points

by ZepsRedRocketalmost 9 years ago

Thats a crazy low percentage. Must go a long way! Thank you for the suggestion!

2nd the FLV line. I like them all in the right (very low) %. I haven't had Duke in a couple years, so I can't help much with that.

TFA Western is wonderful.

To my palate it tastes the way a fresh pack of Camel Filters smelled. Earthy, slightly sweet, dry.

I mix it with the tiniest bit of TFA Hazelnut and it's awesome.

I did love me some camels. Will have to buy. Thank you!

You say Camel Filters, but I used to smoke just regular Camel Lights. Got any ideas what would taste like that? You see people talking about how this or that one tastes like Marlboros, but never Camels. Wonder why that is... Guess that Marlboros must have been so much more popular. But I think it has to do with the appeal of the Marlboro Man.

Shade (FA) is leafy, smoky, and light. Subtle vanilla flavor as well. There is a slight woody taste that goes away with proper steeping. It's one of the main notes in my best selling tobacco

Try adding a darker tobacco Dark Vapure (FA) in very small amounts (0.1 - 0.2%) to bring Shade from a light tobacco to a medium bodied tobacco. I get a wet coffee grounds/pipe tobacco smell and taste from it. A little will go a long way.

Boost the nut flavor with Glory(FA)

You can also add your favorite vanilla if you want to pop that flavor

Black Fire (FA) gives me a smoked hickory/campfire taste. I would never vape it alone. Adding it to Shade in small percentages (0.2-0.4%) will give it more of a cigarette taste.

I believe steeping is crucial with these tobaccos, they change so much over 4 - 9 days.

Good luck!

Where did you find FA MSDS (just curious)? I can see desert ship utilizing Tetramethylpyrazine based on my notes at /r/bsavage. Tetramethylpyrazine is found in chocolate in low percentages and all pyrazines ive fucked with taste nasty if used too high.

Most tobaccos arent like FA Desert Ship. Try INW and Hangsen. Tasting notes are your best friend.

Gotta second the Inawera and Hangsen tobacco flavors. Nothing at all like FA Desert Ship. Highly recommend Hangsen Desert Ship, it couldn't be further from FA version and is a nice straight tobacco flavor. 7% is my sweet spot for that one. Hangsen Highway and USA Red Mix are also excellent.

Hangsen tobacco's are extremely popular , i love Hangsen Elder Captain & Congress which taste just like a Parliament .

Your format is all good w/ me I was genuinely curious on the FA msds.

When I first started DIY, my goal was to get something like The Duke. I got some suggestions on some flavors, but nothing ever came close, so I gave up on that goal and just looked for something that I liked. I had a recipe that used FA Desert Ship, but I got kind of tired of that one. I just recently made a 555 style that I actually like quite a bit.

1.75% FA Glory

.25% FA Black Fire

1% TFA Graham Cracker Clear

1% TFA Toasted Marshmallow

INA 555 Gold is pretty decent after a while. Kinda smells like wet dog though.

FA 7 Leaves Ultimate is a pretty good flavor, but not really rich and bold. I get more of a cigarette feeling from it.

If you get something like the Duke, let me know!

Ive got all the flavors for this recipe that I'm pretty excited to try too. I'll let you know how it turns out. Might go mix it up real quick right now while the wife and baby are asleep.

I'd leave out the Black Fire, it's disgusting and tastes nothing like anything from Indigo.

Captain Jack by Solubarôme reminds me of The Duke a lot, although I haven't had that one in ages. It's really good, worth checking out.

If I remember correctly, Hangsen RY1 was really good, but not very strong. Had to mix at a high percentage, and it was pretty expensive.

I'll have to check it out. Much appreciated!

If you like RY4, check out Flavourart Soho. It's nutty, sweet and goes well with bakeries. A few people have also said it tastes like one of the baccos Indigo uses.

I get a Tribeca vibe from it. It's good but a bit too much throat hit for me.

1 points

by thedirtyprojectoralmost 9 years agoMixologist

Yeah? I've not personally experienced a throat hit from it. What percentage do you typically mix it at?

1 points

by JohnLaCuentaalmost 9 years ago

Only tried it once, I did 3% or 3.5% I can't remember. Really liked the taste but too throaty for me. I might give it another shot though cause it's just been sitting there for now.

I have never had The Duke eliquid. But I have become fond of TFA Captain Black, it's a great subtle flavor to help bind/blend/whatever flavors together.

I am with you 100% on FA Desert Ship , i get ill just by smelling it also , i hate it.

I believe that particular aroma is Turkish type tobacco which i avoid at all costs .

Tobacco Blend by Hangsen at a 1% Then add 3% tpa RY4

I like that for the tobacco part

If you can get your hands on some Solubarôme, their Captain Jack is supposed to be a clone of Halo's Captain Jack I think. I've never tried Halo's so I can't compare, but it definitely reminds me of Indigo's The Duke a lot.

Tetramethylpyrazine is gross indeed. I don't like it's sister Acetyl either. Anyway, there aren't many tobaccos flavorings I like. Inawera makes some decent ones. Vaping Zone was my favorite back in the day, specifically Parliament (which they may have renamed), French Pipe and September Wolves were good as well.

I don't have much experience with tobaccos yet, but I did recently pick up HS CO tobacco (Cohiba) and it is really nice. The flavor is very mild, very similar to dragging from an unlit cig. It's a bit dry, but there is no ash taste. I mix it with apple, maple syrup, butterscotch, and a few other things and it comes together really nice.
