(RECIPE) COCONUT FLAN
submitted almost 9 years ago by deejaymillsnyc

So every year around this time my mother starts making her puerto rican traditional coconut flan. Flan is a baked caramel custard dessert and with her touch of coconut its on point. After recently eating a ton of this I set out to translate it in to vape. I suck at steeping and this recipe does get better daily so a longer steep is probably optimal but after 3-4days i cant put it down.

  • FLV Vanilla Custard 4%
  • CAP Vanilla Custard 1.75%
  • FLV Sweet Coconut 1.25%
  • FLV Coconut .10 (2drops per 30ml)
  • FA Caramel 1%
  • TPA Coconut candy .75%
  • FLV Milk & Honey 1%
  • TPA Dulce de leche .5%
  • DIYFS Holy Vanilla 1.25%
    The coconut
Flv sweet coconut/ flv coconut/ tpa coconut candy
These 3 are my go to coconuts. Sweet coco is delicious and gives a nice sweet light coconut flavor. Works great in cakes and custards so here we use it as the main coconut but it does need some help IMO. Coconut candy really is what finishes off the top note of coconut and makes it taste like sweet coconut flakes on top. If you've never used FLV coconut in a custard you are missing out. At just 2 drops per 30ml it lends a nice buttery fattyness to the mix. You dont get much coconut but more of a thickness.
    The Caramel
FA Caramel/ Milk & Honey/ Dulce de leche
Flan is typcially sitting on top of a nice amount of sweet liquid caramel. FA caramel is a beautiful ingredient that without lending too much caramel flavor can just help blend flavors together. Here I helped out the caramel with milk & honey to give a nice dark sweetness. Ducle de leche gives that sweetness you would get from the condensed milk in the real recipe. I can see these 3 being used a lot more together for an authentic sweet caramel flavor.
    The Custard
FLV Vanilla Custard/ CAP Vanilla Custard/ Holy Vanilla
Flvs custard is currently my favorite on the market. I feel it does the best job of delivering a real CUSTARD taste. CAP van custard is thrown in here to just boost the custard and eggyness. Holy Vanilla is my go to for vanilla flavor. Who doesnt add vanilla into their bakeries so why should it be any different in mixing.
I probably will keep tinkering this recipe as I eat more coconut flan throughout the holiday season but right now its very satisfying that I had to share with you guys. Flan is banging and if youve never indulged in any you need to get on that ASAP. Probably won't be like my moms because everyone goes crazy for it. Shes not allowed to enter any family member's home during the holidays without a tray (j/k but not really). This is my second family nostalgic vape for me and I will happily throw it in everyones face that not only can I have my mom make me some whenever I want but I can also vape on the damn thing. Give this a mix I promise you will like it. Keep mixing fam!

FLV is the Mercedes of flavor brands. They're reliable, high quality, easy to work with, but expensive. You get good mileage, though they're not as in you face powerful as some brands, with some notable exceptions (looking at you coconut), which I guess are the mad AMG editions.

Man I love car analogies.

There are no eggy notes in FLV vanilla custard, & hardly any custard notes. It's more of a vanilla pudding, mate.

agree but with the addition of cap van custard I feel it brings out the custard in that flavor

That's because you're adding custard notes to a non-custard noted flavour....try FLV at 5% standalone

Agreed, no eggy notes. Actually, if you taste closely, imagine cream soda. It's exactly a cream soda... which is why I can't use it anymore. I keep imagining cream effing soda.

I'm gonna disagree with you. First custard I got was FLV vanilla custard, and while it does tend drift towards pudding, I couldn't use it because the eggy flavor was so prominent.

I've gone through almost half a liter of concentrate & have never gotten an eggy note... /shrug

Agreed. I use it to balance the egginess of cap vcv1 and make it creamier, kinda like jello vanilla pudding
