When scrolling through, e-liquid-recipes.com, alltheflavors.com or reddit, I rarely see any recipes that are just one or two flavors that the creator refined to find the perfect percent that these two flavors work together at. I don't understand because a lot of my recipes that I have made are only one or two flavors, but I have gone through six or seven different versions of it just to find what I like best. I believe that a recipe doesn't have to be complex to be very good. It is true that there are some flavors that need different things to back them up and layer together to become a full vape, but there is plenty of flavorings that have plenty of complexity on their own and I feel like some recipes that I see are not so much as really refined and a bunch of flavors thrown together to make something that is a pretty good, muddled mess. As a mixer, I am trying to focus more on using less flavors and refining them together than covering up my mistakes with other flavors. Obviously it goes without saying that not everyone who makes a complex recipe is muddled, all I am saying is sometimes you don't need all of the 11 concentrates that you put in that recipe to make a complex juice that people will enjoy.

I agree, there should be more recipes like these.
edit:fixed link
I know there are some. I just believe there should be a lot more that what there is. I really like the Cereally easy series because they are a take on complex recipes, but a similar quality and more simple. I was also speaking in a general sense. A lot of what I see recently on the sub and those sites are very complex recipes that in my mind I don't think need to be that complex to get the flavor you are looking for. However, thank you for the list of simple recipes I believe there are 2 or 3 on here I have not tried yet and will get around to it. Thank you for your input!
Yes, it too often it seems there's an impulse to add more flavors to get things right when what's really needed is refining the balance between the flavors used.
My development goes through two phases:
-
throw shit at the wall
-
make the shit into art by carefully removing some of the shit.
Obviously you need both parts, but I almost always find myself removing things to make it perfect. And invariably, there is a third step:
- add a tiny bit of one particular color of shit back in
because for some reason I always wind up with one ingredient which needs to get bumped up after the removal phase
I'm a fan of ID10-T's Sugar Cookie recipe. So easy to make, I steep it for a week, so good :) And versatile to try adding new flavors if you wish!
Can you please share it ?
I'll copy-paste the recipe, and suggestions ID10-T gave to me below:
Simple Sugar Cookie by ID10-T Link: https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/10644#simple_sugar_cookie_by_id10_t
Better after a steep but can be shake and vaped. Also seems to be good at holding a little more than the usual nic level, for those high-stress days. Clouds make bystanders lust after fresh baked cookies.
Mix % Vendor Flavor
8 (CAP) Sugar Cookie
4 (CAP) Vanilla Custard
12.0% total flavoring
ID10-T's Notes: Allow me to recommend this: Simple Sugar Cookie - 8% CAP Sugar Cooke, 4% CAP Vanilla Custard V1. It's an extremely simple and versatile recipe. After you try the original, try making your own simple variations by adding one of your other flavors to it, such as 2.5% TFA Caramel, 2% TFA Orange Cream, 1% TFA Banana Ripe, 0.5 0.25% TFA Cinnamon Spice, or 1.5% FA Meringue. Or try removing 1.5% of the CAP Vanilla Custard and replacing that with 2% Bavarian Cream, 2% TFA Marshmallow, 1.5% CAP Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, or 2% TFA Vanilla Swirl. Or shaving 1.5% off of the Sugar Cookie and replacing that with 2% Graham Cracker Clear or 2% Cheesecake Graham Crust. I can't imagine any of those additions would taste bad, and some of them might be a big improvement on the original. Have fun, and happy mixing! Edit: changed my mind about the amount of TFA Cinnamon Spice.
I just want to note that my recommendations for /r/slackerdan (Hey Dan, I'm so glad you've enjoyed this recipe!) were tailored to his small stash of flavors - I wanted to suggest uses for as many of his flavors as I could. There are, I'm very sure, even better additions/alterations than these that could be made to it.
Edit: And I like hearing about them, so if you try one, please let me know.
I've had the opposite experience. Looking for new recipes to use with some flavor I just got, most of the results are just that single flavor. I almost never find anything more complex than that. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just not what I'm looking for.
I just want to thank you for your Simple Sugar Cookie. Mixed up 30ml, demolished it, and mixed up 240ml. I love recipes like this; simple is better to my mind.
You're welcome!!! I'm so pleased you've enjoyed it. I tend to demolish 30s of that stuff with almost frightening speed, to the point that I now only mix it at 6mg instead of my usual 3mg. That slows down the consumption a bit.
Got any examples for us? Because the last recipe you posted was a 9 ingredient recipe for a doughnut ;-)
Haha you're right. That is actually what made me go simple again. I was so obsessed with making that donut perfect that I was covering up things that were missing instead of just working with a few concentrates to make it good. I gave a recipe for a caramel apple in the podcast if you want to check that out. It is 4 ingredients but all 4 play important roles in the recipe.
Haha, yeah, just thought it was funny.
But yeah, I mostly agree, no point mixing something with 3 ingredients if you can do it with 2.
I think the problem isn't always due to the recipe creators - it's that simple recipes tend to get overlooked by prospective mixers and therefore people tend to stop posting them when they're not getting feedback or upvotes. I've found a couple of gems on this sub that are 2-3 ingredients, but the posts have <5 upvotes and no replies. What's the point in posting if no one is going to mix your shit?
Overall, I really think the DIY juice scene focuses way too much on recipes. This sub is doing the right thing pushing flavour notes, Beginner Blending/Modest Monday etc. The problem as I see it is there are so many flavourings out there now that it's almost impossible to keep up. Especially when you're outside of the US and can't easily pick up a few concentrates without spending a fortune on shipping and/or weeks of waiting time. I mean, I've got something like 150-200 flavourings now, there are 9 recipes on the first 3 pages of this sub at the moment. For each recipe I'm missing at least one ingredient, on most of them I'm missing 4-5.
I don't know - I'm a fan of using lots more flavors. You might say I'm a fan of ... No, not going to do it.
Okay... This took me a second because I didn't read your username until I read the comment, but then I started dying. I mentioned it in my podcast: http://mixlr.com/cloudstate/showreel/
I just listened to your show (I had to speed listen, I'm at work) - good job, keep it up. (But your mic needs more volume!)
Totally agree.
The best recipes are ones that accomplish their goal with as little ingredients as possible.
Ain't nobody tasting that .2% TPA orange cream in your recipe. Stahp.
EXACTLY! It also turns beginners away because they are like, "wait I need to have 100+ flavorings to do this right? bye."
As the newest of the new noobs, this is me. I currently have 2 flavorings, and I want to keep things simple as I'm starting up. I like to follow the process of reaching what the mixer was looking for, but I just want the bare bones simple recipes for myself for now. I don't mind adding a couple of flavors and playing with them for a few weeks and then moving on until one day I'm in here going " so I added .02% of XXXX and that completed the flavor profile I was looking for" but until them. Simple is good
Of course you can use single flavors if you want. It's not bad, but more flavors can add depth into your E-liquid. You can always eat just the steak but it is always better with some accessories.
That's how I see it. Not saying more flavors = better, but it adds some depth into your juice. Sometimes it's better with less, sometimes it's better with more. I enjoy multiple flavors over single flavor since more flavors can add depth in terms of inhale and exhale. Tasting different for everytime you take a hit
Yeah, totally agree. Sometimes you just need a little extra something to allow the juice to remain interesting, especially for ADVs.
Another reason for complex recipes is that during the ideas phase you have the components tasting a certain way in your mind, the flavouring may be missing some key notes that you expected it to have, so other flavourings are needed to fill in the gaps.
EG A simple mango coconut mix, ideally just two flavours. Sadly each of the coconuts I tried were nowhere near the coconut I had imagined. So, different coconuts needed to be combined to make the mind's-tongue coconut taste. Same with the mango.
My favorite for a looooooong time was for a 30ml bottle you get 12 ml pg, 15 vg, 2ml of tfa blueberry and 1ml of tfa cotton candy. I'd always just throw a bottle together before work and shake n vape. Simple and pretty tasty.
That sounds really good. I mentioned your comment on my podcast: http://mixlr.com/cloudstate/showreel/
Cool podcast! And yeah, I added the cotton candy to sweeten it, but I felt the sweeter it was the more it tasted like a blueberry muffin sort of flavor, but I don't like muffin juices because as soon as your coil starts getting old it tastes like a burnt muffin, whereas with just the blueberry it seemed to taste like it did with a fresh coil even when my coil looked like ass. So I guess it came from being broke, but it also tasted great and was easy and cheap. Lol
I mix blueberry, mixed berrys, fruits and tobaccos with one flavoring depending on what I want. Would I post these? Def not lol. Reason being anybody could do this with no effort. The recipes that get posted are original concoctions which is why they require multiple ingredients. Not only that but I think different people's taste require diff %s for singular ingredients. I mix a tobacco flavor for me and someone else. They like it extra mild so I mix it for them at 1.5% while I like it strong at 5%. Recipes with 2 ingredients would work but singular ones will just lead to others coming in and saying "I like it at 7% better" " no I like it at 12%" Ect.
I agree, I regularly vape juices that are just one or two flavors, mainly fruit... Try Cactus and Lime 50/50, best combo ever!
I will definitely have to try that out. I mentioned your comment on my podcast: http://mixlr.com/cloudstate/showreel/
Hell, one of my most popular recipes locally is called Domberry, named after my friend who requested it initially.
- FW Blueberry 6.66%
- INW Raspberry 3.33%
It is a very candy-like blue raspberry/blueberry. These two flavors compliment one another beautifully. Another simple and popular mix I call Ling Ling, for the same reason as above.
- TFA Strawberry 5%
- TFA Strawberry Ripe 7%
- INW Cactus 0.7%
I agree. I am new to DIY but all the premium I try I find them to harsh. I vape at 1-1.5 ohm, maybe I sould try an RTA? Would love to see steeping and temperature be more important similar to making a very good wine. Also more premium flavors made only for juice. I am a new to vape and think mixing my own is essential, only simple ones at 50/50. Too much flavor do not do me good with together with a good wine. ;)
