I'm looking to make a tobacco vape for my grandma who has smoked her entire life. She quit a year ago because of vaping but has been getting her ejuice from poundland (equivalent of a dollar store to the americans here) and I thought I could probably make her something better since this stuff goes for ~1/4 of the usual market price and i'm a little skeptical as to what's actually in it or why it's so cheap.
I'm new to DIY and only have 5 concentrates myself but i'd like to try and make her something simple (ideally a standalone concentrate mix) with no fruity twists or anything fancy- just a tobacco flavour. If anyone is aware of any good tobacco concentrates i'd much appreciate it. She is currently using 16mg/ml juice if it matters. Thanks!
Edit: wow thanks for all the amazing responses guys- I've been busy since I posted this but will get to responding as soon as I'm home
I really want to tell you, please use the search bar and type in tobacco, but I feel like we don't get enough discussion about tobacco flavorings here. I'm going to do a couple things here to hopefully get this thread rolling. First, here is a link to a post from the other day which touches a bit on tobaccos. I'm also going to page in /u/T_Mace, /u/bobbysavage, /u/Rundonkey, /u/diycloudchaser to suggest some flavors and maybe throw in some input as well. Here is a link to the flavor wiki which contains a few tobacco flavors, but probably not enough. Lastly, I'm shamelessly going to suggest you check into RY4, which is what got me to totally give up smoking. Nearly every company has their own rendition of it and it seems to always contain a "4" but basically means it is meant to mimic the sweet variation of a cigar flavored e-juice better known as "RUYAN #4".
From what I have tried, FLV Red Burley is decently close to a cigarette by itself. INW Dark for Pipe is pretty good, but not necessarily much of a resemblance to an actual cigarette. INW DNB (dirty neutral base) will give you an ashy taste, if that's what you're after. INW has a "for pipe" line of flavorings that are excellent IMO. Hangsen also carries a rather impressive selection of tobaccos, although I haven't tried any of them yet, I have read good things. I'm currently in the process of deciding on which ones I want to try for my next order.
Also, here's a list of some higher rated recipes involving tobacco flavorings. I'd suggest longer than normal (3+ weeks) steep times for most of them, but some can possibly be enjoyed sooner.
Better late than never, here is a thread from about a month ago with some solid tobacco info in it. Please read through it and gather all the knowledge you possibly can. :)
Thanks for the page!
I'm pretty much gonna echo you on this and say FLV Red Burley 3-5% for a single flavor mix. Add INW Dirty Neutral Base 0.5—1% if ash is needed.
Other option could be FLV Cured if you don't want to steep long. It's does well after just a few days. For single flavor only, FLV Cured could be good but FLV Red Burley is still better imo.
So if you need something easy start there OP.
Thanks for the page as well!
To get you started in the right direction I suggest TFA ry4 double at 7% stand alone, inawera vanilla for pipe at 3% standalone, and inawera gold ducat at 3% standalone..this pretty much covers a broad range of what tobacco offers as a standalone and they are really good standalone.
If she doesn't like sweeter type tobacco vapes which all those are I suggest having a look at Flavourart burley,Flavourart cowboy blend, and TFA Turkish...all stand alone around 1%
Thanks a bunch for getting this thread to take off- I really appreciate all the help and advice people have been giving me. Sorry for being so late getting back to everyone but I've had a hectic week.
My grandma used to smoke benson and hedges silk cut cigarettes, so i'm not totally sure what kind of flavour I should be going for, but she described them as fairly "mild" if that changes anything.
Thanks also to /u/T_Mace and /u/Rundonkey for the help. I'm leaning towards TFA RY4 at the moment based on some of these suggestions- do you guys think it's a fairly safe purchase? Anything you'd recommend over this knowing what she used to smoke?
I had a look for FLV red burley but I can't seem to find any easily available in the UK. Less steeping is obviously more ideal, but do you think RY4 would be at least okay with minimal steeping?
RY4 would be a safe starter, although keep in mind, it is a bit sweet with notes of caramel and vanilla. I'm not completely sure as to what's available to you in the UK, but generally most sites have a decent flavor description or if nothing else go directly to the manufacturers site and see what they describe the flavor to be. There are definitely other flavorings that are geared more towards being an authentic tobacco taste and nothing more.
RY4 has no actual tobacco taste, it's a mild vanilla caramel. It's good but don't expect "oh my god tobacco" taste.
For a non sweet tobacco flavor other than Red Burley, I would be inclined to try Turkish. My version is by Flavor Express so that's the only one I can truly vouch for but if you can't get that then maybe TFA Turkish.
Also, if you can find any Tobacco Absolute of any kind by any brand, you might consider picking some up. It is not a standalone but can be used in very small amounts to bring some real tobacco taste to most any mix.
RY4 doesn't need much steep, to answer your question. 2 weeks is ideal, a few days is doable if for some reason there is an impending need to vape it right away.
Cheers.
EDIT: Reading through this thread now, I see wh1skey has beat me to the punch on the RY4 topic and I am but an echo, yet a again lol. I also saw someone suggested FA Burley and Cowboy, I haven't personally tasted those but have read good reviews about both. Reviews are very subjective tho, then again, so is my opinion.
Hit us up when you make a final choice. I'm rather curious at this point whether your grams will like our suggestions.
I have fallen off from buying/sampling/playing with/reviewing flavors this summer. My knowledge is not 100% on all the different brands (life happens)
here is the tasting note compilation located in 3 different places with 3 differerent groups of people commenting so go to ELR and our version over here also

Ok so with that being said: A question like this pops up every so often and I really don't have a single answer for it. Its difficult to reproduce that smoking taste/feel.You said you only have 6 flavors, that seems like the boat I was originally in. I was on a cloning mission though and went overboard and didnt have a lot of other flavors.
So make sure to buy some flavors for yourself that aren't tobacco, so your recipe progress doesnt suffer.
People really seem to love or hate FLV Cured tobacco. To me its just alright. It has its own sweetness to it and is an artificial tobacco flavor that kinda tastes like a pack of cigs smells vaguely. Perhaps FA bitter wizard could be used to tame the sweetness. I have both and can try this but will need a week to get back to you on it.
You can try buying a cigar and making an extract [Naturally Extracte dTobacco NET for short] . I've had good results with Eastern Standard cigars (cakewalk/cream crush specifically). All you need is PG/Tobacco/Bottle/Coffee Filter. That would produce great results, and actually taste like tobacco.
Or you can buy some NETS/TA's [Tobacco Absolutes] like INW's Wera Garden Line. Im not sure how plug n play these are. I liked Garuda by itself but nothing compares to actually smoking tobacco.
- 1% INW WG Garuda is good light leafy flavor. not bad by itself but could use some help from other flavors
- 1% INW WG Cigar seems good but is new to me. cant comment on nuances
- 1% INW WG Virginia is a darker/robust tobacco extract/taste
- maybe i can get around to specific tasting notes on these last 2 sooner than later
I find NET's delicious when mixed with.
- x% NET
- 0.3% [Acetyl Pyrazine 5% solution]
- x% of your favorite coffee flavorant. (I used 0.5% TFA coffee flavor)
It does gunk wicks though, I am trying to rework that one with a different coffee flavor
I know you said no flavors but if your grandmama was a coffee drinker there is a high chance coffee/cigarette was a morning ritual. I miss it sometimes. Acetyl P can be awesome when used with a light touch. Its actually a flavor used for a while in cigs (see megathread)
Basically you can buy flavors that imitate or flavors that are extracted. Some imitations are good some bad. Dont rule out one or the other, I would say try an NET.
/r/diytobaccoejuice/ is awesome and /u/solanaceaeenthusiast is the kitties titties
/u/supra95/
Side note , totally with you on life happening , quite a hectic last few months with very little time to play with my vape stuff
Thanks so much for the detailed reply- sorry I haven't responded until now. I asked my grandma and she said she most recently smoked benson and hedges silk cut cigarettes. Is there anything from your suggestions that you think might fit this most closely?
If not, any suggestions for just a standard tobacco flavour that would be the safest buy? She said she doesn't think she would be that picky about it and that any would so as long as it was tobacco flavored.
I had to google what silk cuts were. They seem like light cigarettes I have no idea maybe buy a couple flavors sorry.
Possibly a combo of Flavorah Cured tobacco/Inawera Garuda Inawera Dirty Neutral could help with an ashy note (in theory) I've never used it and dont know how it would play with FLV Cured Tobacco. FLV Cured Tobac may already have an ashy note.
Unfortunately that's 3 ingredients on a theory. Instead maybe try
- Flavorah Cured Tobacco.
- Hangsen Congress as suggested by /u/surfisherman
- The Flavor Apprentice M-Type as suggested by /u/blazedembeatz
In no particular order. I havent tried the last 2 so I cant comment on them but I do trust those user's tastes as well as Solanaceae and T_mace for this area specifically. It's all opinion/perception though. I can't tag more than 3 users but I trust all the posters in here. Pistachio RY4 may not be a a great recipe for your grams though
If she wants more tobacco I guess try INW Garuda. Please don't hate us if our suggestions suck by your standards, cigarette recipes are like a unicorn for some people.
I cant remember it's either T_mace or ID10-T on a quest for a cig flavor.
good luck
I had really good experience with WTA nicotine recently. I bought two 15ml bottle of unflavored, VG-based WTA nicotine from aromaejuice.com and found that I could just mix the WTA and VG together, leave out everything else, and had quite a satisfying tobacco taste. YMMV, of course, but the sites selling WTA have a lot of positive reviews from other users with the same experience.
The only downside is that WTA is more expensive than the usual USP nicotine. Purchasing from Aroma is about $30.00 per 15ml. Omvapors.com is a much better deal, starting at 120ml for $44.99 (unfortunately I didn't see that until after ordering from Aroma).
Is it worth it? I would have to say that I think it was at least worth the price to try it, even if I don't pay for it regularly. IMO, it vaped very close to a "honey" flavor, but subtly so, and there was also the aftertaste you get after smoking, which I have to say I enjoyed quite thoroughly.

Holy shit. Can I just... What good people we have in this sub. Look at all these thoughtful, lengthy responses. Goddamn, I love you guys. You are all the best people ever.
Well, to be fair, tobacco heads are starving for tobacco conversation. We are the long forgotten lurkers of this sub. We creep in the shadows and wait for someone to say Beetlejuice 3 times so we can appear in a cloud of vape.
But ya, this sub is the bee's knees, I do agree.
This made me actually LOL. You're right, of course, and speaking as someone who was burned by "tobacco" vapes in the past, I feel ya'. If it weren't for Flavorah, I might never have tried a tobacco flavoring in my DIY adventures.
The world is opening up for tobacco heads. INW, HS & FLV are making incredible tobacco flavors, and once more people try them, the flavor reviews and recipes will follow.
The DIY community will be at the forefront of that movement, as usual. :-)
What did she smoke before she started vaping?
Sorry for the delayed reply- life has been incredibly hectic for me the past few days. I just rang her and she said she smoked benson and hedges silk cut if you know what they're like?
What kind of tobacco?
I really like the INW For Pipe line. Very nice tobaccos that have a flavor more of pipe tobacco. They aren't really straight up tobaccos, but they do have other tobaccos that I hear are really nice as well.
I have heard a lot of good stuff about some of the FLV Tobaccos that are just like nice straight up tobaccos, so those are probably worth checking out.
You might also want to look in to NETs since those can also be real nice.
I'm not sure what tobacco eliquid she would be looking for, but I managed to get her on the phone today and she said she used to smoke benson and hedges silk cut cigarettes. From what she said I don't think she'd be too picky as long as it was tobacco flavored.
Is there anything you might suggest that is available in the UK? thanks for the response
Like many others here I do enjoy a good tobacco although have now moved on from straight tobaccos to more complex recipes however It is where I started. As you are in the uk you should definately check out flavourart.co.uk as they do a terrific range of very good tobaccos. My notes aren't as extensive as they should be but I have some which are
Golden Rollie @ 3% reminds me of a calssic golden virginia rollup - quite sweet tasting, medium throat hit and long mellow aftertaste.
Dusk @ 4% - Light tasting delicate smokey tobacco with a sweet aftertase - reminds me of a 555 cigarette
Maxx Blend @ 3% - this one is good full on tobacco that you can take a good long drag of. Some backgound notes of oriental spice, medium to strong throat hit - was my adv for my first year DIYing - actually might go make some tonight...
Mellow Sunset - Thsi one is quite mild but like a ciggie wrapped in liqourice paper - sweet and lightly smokey, throat hit is light. You can take some deep drags on this one as you settle down after a long days work. - again I mixed at 4% but you could go higher depending on taste.
Most are Ok to shake n Vape but better after 1-2 wks steeping.
hope that helps.
I have tried a few mixes of various brands but nothing ever came close. The only commercial juice that resembled a cigarette for me was Hangsen's Golden Tobacco. This place has a couple of them, including a "Golden V1", that might be it. I haven't tried the concentrate, but that would be my first stop. Just my 2c
SuperConcentrated (SC):
- Benson (B-Tobacco)
- Golden Virginia
- Koolz
I've also tried the honey flue cured but it almost made me barf and I could still taste it after cleaning the tank out three times - shit is straight nasty.
SC Golden VI has been my wife's ADV for about 8 months now. I enjoy a quick vape of it now and then but couldn't do it all day every day. I could vape nothing but Koolz for months though...love that stuff.
Are these the BCV ones you're referring to? Been meaning to try some Super Concentrate tobaccys.
These are the ones I've been using here.
What type of juice has she been buying? Can you describe the profile?
I couldn't tell you the specifics of the juice she's been buying- when I saw it it was just a generic cheap tobacco juice, I couldn't even tell you the name. I did find out that she smoked benson and hedges silk cut cigarettes though, if you can think of anything comparable?
After seeing everybody raving about Hangsen tobacco flavorings for years on other e cig forums i bought a small bottle of "Congress" flavor because i like Parliament & lighter Marlboro type flavors .
Blown away , tastes exactly like a Parliament and i didn't add a damn thing to it.
Used at 5%
try out ENYAWREKLAWS Pistachio RY4
That's not a tobacco vape for a grandma ex smoker. That's a bakery, desert vape. Ry4 is caramel vanilla with just a run by a tobacco field.
I'm confused- is this different to the TFA RY4 that other people have been suggesting then? Because i'm currently leaning mostly towards purchasing that
Pistachio RY4 is a recipe made of 4 or 5 different flavourings. It can be bought as a concentrate though which means the flavors are premixed but still require you to add pg, vg, and nicotine. Anyway, it's fucking delicious but has zero, I mean ZERO tobacco taste. But it is fucking delicious.
