Went out today to Bulk Barn to buy acouple Lorann Oils to flavor my vape juices with. I did my research before hand on diacetyl, potassium sorbate, polysorbate, food coloring, etc.
Loranne's official statement; no use of diacetyl in any of their flavoring products

Bestvapeflavors.com saying to avoid any concentrates with food coloring as it COULD cause irritation to the lungs

And more research on the pulmonary toxicology and long-term effects (on test subjects [rats and monkeys]) of potassium sorbate and polysorbate's (mainly polysorbate 80) assured my confidence of their virtually harmless vapor properties, and decided to try it out.
As of yet I have tried a small amount of Lorann's Root Beer concentrate (notable ingredients include caramel color, polysorbate 80 and potassium sorbate) and a slightly larger amount of their Butterscotch concentrate (notable ingredients include caramel color) (vaping them in that order). After vaping these 2 flavors for afew hours, i've noticed a sudden sharp pain in my (relatively sensitive) lungs and decided it would be best if I shared this information.
The other concentrates I bought were Banana Cream (notable ingredients include alcohol and food coloring red 40 and blue 1) and Cherry (notable ingredients include alcohol and food coloring yellow 5).
I'm not sure if I should continue experimenting with these new flavors after my observations:
-
sensitivity to the polysorbate 80 or the potassium sorbate in the root beer flavor (exclusively) (conflicting my research) and the side effects took longer to show
-
sensitivity to the caramel food coloring in both flavors with side effects also taking long to show (ive probably vaped the rootbeer flavor atleast 20 times and the butterscotch flavor 40 times within the last 3 hours) (my research showing food coloring COULD cause irritation)
-
and also my negligence to continue experimenting as the unused Cherry and Banana Cream also contain food coloring
I really hope this helps anyone else researching Lorann Oils as a flavor additive for e-juice
Thanks, good info. Lorann has very few flavors anymore that aren't better sourced through other flavor manufacturers. Loranns only claim to fame in vaping was their early availability and semi safe notoriety. In the past year I'd say all their previously used flavors have been made safer and better by companies like flavor art and flavorah.
Tldr: just avoid lorann unless you live in the arctic circle.
Off the top of my head Cream Cheese Icing, Banana Cream and Lemonade are LA flavors I haven't found better versions of. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.
la watermelon is my go to.
I don't think that is really true. Plenty of their flavors are amazing and have been tailored to vaping. For instance all the colorings are gone for DIY use.
Also, they have a few flavors that have not been made better by other companies.
Yeah, this is exactly why I've avoided LA ever since I found other flavoring manufacturers. The immediate availability is kind of nice, but inhaling them is not worth it. Very few that are good for vaping, and the ones that are can be sourced through other vendors
La lemonade clear is good stuff. I use tpa, capella and a few others but I love la lemonade!
Yeah their lemonade and cream cheese icing are good. Have you tried FW lemonade? It's probably the closest to LA that I've tried
I seriously doubt the pain was in your lungs and was most likely throat or muscle related. Your lungs don't have pain receptors. Chronic inflammation of the lung's lining can be painful, do to the surrounding areas being affected, but I dont think vaping would have that serious of an effect. Not saying these flavors aren't bad for you but your pain was most likely from muscles related to deep breathing (vaping, coughing, etc.)
I agree, mainly because I would refer to it as a quasi-experiment (without controlled factors) (if thats the correct term to use). I ate my first clif protein bar around the same time as my heart/lung burn (referring to the sudden sharp pain - i thought it was heart burn at first but the pain was primarily on my right side) and ive had these sensitivities in the past while trying other protein bars. -continuing to vape the root beer flavor and trying the banana cream flavor (holy shit banana cream drool), more updates to come!
Pleurisy sucks. Had it once from inhaling fumes at an unventilated nail salon. Their air system was broken and in the middle of getting fixed. They all had masks, none of their clients did though. I didn't think a short period of exposure would cause so much pain. The DR told me to take tylenol for the inflammation and wait it out. Otherwise, steroids if it got worse. Ive had similar but minor in comparison pain from vaping before. For me its mostly sensitivity to the acidic compounds in the concentrates, like citric acid or malic acid. I have sensitivity to those in general so I try to avoid it but sometimes, you just want something sour damnit. Not everyone has the same sensitivities so it could be that you just happen to be sensitive to polysorbate 80 or potassium sorbate. Either way, its always a good idea to get the concentrates with the least amount of unnecessary additives. Stick with colorless versions whenever possible.
Don't most of Lorann's stuff come in colorless versions? I would stay away from anything colored.
Yes, you can get it all colorless. However, I believe you must get at least a gallon to get it colorless direct through them.
Yeah, this is sort of a known issue with Loranns. The only reason we even consider volatiles safe to inhale in general is because we do so when we interact with foods. Colorings do not fall into this category. Therefore they should be avoided just in case, and as you demonstrate anecdotally, they may be unsafe, or at the least irritating.
