EDIT - v4 is already in the works. I've got some great suggestions and ideas for it. I already have a lot more notes written up and I'm fairly sure I figured out the cream base's percentages finally. Expect to hear more sometime next week if my new flavorings arrive.
So some of you might remember me going completely fucking insane trying really hard to clone Shurb. I had two major versions and probably about 6k failures. Something like that.
Well after completely giving up and deciding my last attempt was good enough, I finally went back and took a good hard look recently. I knew something was off. Just something, maybe one ingredient, was just throwing it all off the rails. It was a good juice, I'll give myself that, but it still wasn't Shurb.
So today, I'm bringing you my third published version. I feel that this one is VERY close compared to my previous attempts and I'm honestly pretty proud of it. Like my last version, I feel that whether or not you think this is close to the real deal, it is still pretty damn tasty if you're in to that "sherbert but not really, more a candy" deal.
Let's just get right in to it:
#SHURB v3
- FA Mandarin 4%
- TFA Key Lime 3%
- FA Blenderize (Tutti Frutti) 3%
- TFA Whipped Cream 3.5%
- CAP Harvest Berry 5.5%
- TFA Vanilla Swirl 2%
- TFA Cotton Candy (EM) 5%
And now let's talk about why I'm so sure that this is so much better than before:
#BREAK IT DOWN
-
FA Mandarin
I've discussed it before but I really feel this is the orange we want in our Shurb. It isn't too harsh and it isn't too candy-like. It is juicy and delicious which is exactly what we need. Things like TFA Mandarin seem either too artificial or too harsh to be the right pick. -
TFA Key Lime
Absolutely massive shoutout to /u/botboy141 right here. His Shurb-alike recipe that he created really opened my eyes here. Pretty much everybody agreed there was no actual lime in Shurb, just something citrus-y that tasted similar. They (and me) were wrong. I'd bet on that. TFA Key Lime is perfect here, it has a sort of "candy" lime while still being realistic. At this percentage, it gives just enough lime to match what we get on Shurb's exhale. Vital part of the mystery right here. -
FA Blenderize
This is the thing keeping me from calling this a "perfect clone", if you want to say that. I never really thought about this until I let my friend try Shurb once and his very first comment was "that reminds me of Juicy Fruit a little". Absolute revelation right there. If you smell Shurb you can ABSOLUTELY smell Tutti Frutti. Unfortunately, FA Blenderize is very strong and even at this percent it's a little more dominant than I'd like. I've tried some other Tutti Frutti flavors and they just weren't right at all. They were more like actual tutti frutti and less like Juicy Fruit. If you don't have this, feel free to try leaving it out. The recipe should still hold up alright. -
TFA Whipped Cream
I've talked about this at length before, so all I'll say is the MSDS that was done on Shurb pretty much guarantees this is in there. It has the same ingredient as TFA Smooth, which (as the name implies) smooths out the flavors and adds a little bit of a softer mouthfeel. -
CAP Harvest Berry
This stuff is now something else I'm finallly questioning as well. I really thought it HAD to be the source of the raspberry. People have often theorized that there are other berry flavors in Shurb and this seemed like the perfect answer. Every other raspberry I've tried just wasn't right. Too sweet, too realistic, etc. Harvest Berry always seemed perfect. The one issue I'm having now is the recipe is just missing something that makes Shurb pop. I think next version I'll try FA Raspberry. Unfortunately I ran out from my original attempts. If anybody has everything for this recipe AND has FA Raspberry, PLEASE try it out and let me know your thoughts. It'd be hugely appreciated. -
TFA Vanilla Swirl
Creamy vanilla. Pretty much nothing else to say. If you take it much higher than 2% it starts to get too obvious. The vanilla in Shurb is more something you notice on the exhale, and it's very slight. -
TFA Cotton Candy
Again, no need to really get in to this. The MSDS showed there's a ton of EM in there. Lower amounts of EM just mute things and don't help much here. At this percentage it really adds a nice sweetness.
As always, thanks everybody for your suggestions and your support. And especially a big shoutout to everyone who made a Shurb recipe before me as those were how I really got obsessed and what gave me my starting points.
Enjoy guys!
have you tried fa forest fruit in place of cap harvest berry?
I've considered it, someone mentioned before. It seems like too much when I smell it, but I'll have to give it a try soon. Might as well right?
To me FA Forest Fruit is more red and CAP Harvest Berry is more blue. Might be what you need. It's not all that strong either, I usually use around 4%.
Interesting. Like I said I've had it for a while as a possible candidate but never bothered trying it since the smell didn't seem right. I'll try it out when I get home! "Red" is definitely what I'm looking for.
Interesting side note, somebody PM'd me a long time back and told me the secret to Shurb was likely "blackcurrant and blackberry" (IIRC). I didn't take it too seriously because that didn't seem right to me.. but Forest Fruit has been described as those + some raspberry I believe.
I have been digging your v 2 lately so will deffo give this a shot .btw- Many thanks for sharing your work mate. Very much appreciated .
v2 is a beast so if this raises it any it will be a belter . No doubt v4 won't be far behind lol
Have you tried FW Ruby Red Grapefruit and TPA Key Lime in small concentrations together? The effect is wonderful! <=1% Key Lime and <=0.5% FW Ruby Red Grapefruit can totally change the flavor profile of a juice.
I'm going to have to try my hand at this once I get home tonight.
Question for you - do you have any other notes on the Grapefruit? I've looked in to it some more and I'm constantly seeing it described as "grapefruit with sugar". This is really piquing my interest since EM refuses to give the sugary taste that Shurb has.
Plus almost every site selling it describes it as "raspberry, lime, orange, and citrus". As if it's another citrus apart from the orange. And we've already 100% ruled out lemon being in here previously.
It is a sugary grapefruit at 3% or higher, but I find it most useful with other tropical fruits (Lychee, papaya, pineapple, mango) at <=0.5%. Some FW flavors have fructose but I am not sure if this is one. At lower %'s it more an astringent sweet/sourness that is very pleasing. I advise 5% max in a mix if you are going for it as a main note.
Have you looked into TPA Jackfruit? It is one of my favorite "secret ingredients". It greatly improves the character of FW Blood Orange, FW Ruby Red Grapefruit, and FW Tangerine. It helps take out the "oiliness" or bitterness that the FW citrus flavors have IME. However, some people can detect TPA Jackfruit as a very sweaty and unpleasant smell similar to TPA Guava.
I'm pretty sure the Element drip citrus flavors are some combo of FW citrus flavors, jackfruit, + some other stuff. Our Ruby Red is based off of their pink grapefruit flavor and I think I got pretty close. I lost my notes on the making of though :(
I've considered Jackfruit but my line of thinking is like this - a combo of all the people that have ever worked on this (including myself) have pretty much nailed the particular flavors in Shurb. Probably not the exact flavorings but definitely the flavors that are in there.
At this point I've got quite a few ingredients going on and I'm certain most of them are in there. I'm also very confident that Shurb is NOT a super complicated juice that takes 12 flavorings. So I'm trying to keep it low. There are a lot of flavors I've thought to use as an additive (like FA Liquid Amber) but they just mean that I'm over-complicating things when the real deal probably uses like 6 flavorings, max. I already feel like my attempts are just over-complicating the juice.
I really do think the Grapefruit thing is a good idea though. I've got some on the way to try out. I really appreciate those notes! I'm pretty excited to try it.
Looking forward to trying this new version. I gave up trying and have been vaping the most boring but yummy recipe the last few months...
5% TFA Pineapple
5% TFA Papaya
5% TFA Mango
Yes, I'm lazy.
Well that does sound tasty. I'm pretty excited already for v4, as always everyone provided some great leads. Especially the FW Grapefruit idea.
Nice to see you around again buddy!
Crapppp, I'm only missing FA Blenderize. Definitely need to pick that up and make this soon. Good job and I have to commend you for your tenacity.
Feel free to try it without Blenderize and also feel free to try it with FA Raspberry instead of Harvest Berry. I'm crowd sourcing other options by offering substitutions ;)
What does Blenderize actually taste like by itself?
I read somewhere that Blenderize was like bubblegum so I mixed your V2 with CAP Bubblegum in it's place and it was pretty good - although you get a tiny bit of a rubbery note from that Bubblegum.
I mixed v2 awhile back and it was pretty good and close to shurb. I'm almost 99% sure shurb has fa raspberry though.
I always thought dragonfruit had a juicy fruit thing going on. Maybe that would help make the harvest berry pop, too? Just an idea. I'm missing a few of these ingredients, so I'm gonna make an order on Monday and whip up a batch when they get here! Thanks for sharing!
Any thoughts on FW razzleberry? I've picked it up recently, haven't used it yet though. It smells like it might work, more of a brighter flavor that may work in favor of your recipe
I have tried it in the past and it just didn't quite work for some reason. It was too sweet? I can't quite recall why I ruled it out. I'm going to go back through all my raspberries again just to double check when my FA comes in.
Understood. I have had sherbets before but I've never had Shurb, so I got everything to try V2. Blenderize is great but really took it over! To me Harvest has always came across as a dark berry flavor, and I was thinking something "brighter" would match up with the lime and orange notes, and I think Razzleberry is the only other multi-berry flavor i have right now
I'll have give this a whirl.
I've vaped so much of your V2 version and love it. I keep running into the problem of the EM muting it after a day so I can never really enjoy it as much unless I just mixed it up.
There's supposed to be a ton of EM in there but I'm really questioning it lately. The flavor with large amounts of EM just is too muted for Shurb. Plus EM tends to ruin my coils after a few days which never happened with Shurb.
Still a lot of work to be done.
I think with your latest verson I'm going to try it with 1% and no EM to see how it is. I love the sweetness it has with a high amount of it. Like you said, it destroys coils fast and mutes too quickly.
You might also try some of Nude Nicotine's new sweeteners that don't gunk up coils as fast to get that preferred sweetness you're looking for. Obviously, the original mix probably doesn't have it but it would be a good sub.
At any rate V2 is still one of my favorite mixes to make. You did a fantastic job on it. I look forward to trying this version for something a little different.
It would make a good sub but I'm trying to keep as close to the original as possible for now. After I'm happy with that I'll probably tweak it to see what else I can do with it.
Let me know how it is with 1% EM. I have a feeling the huge amount of EM in the MSDS wasn't just EM alone, probably some other flavoring that has a lot of it in there.
I appreciate and admire your commitment to this. Shurb was my all time favorite- and all day vape, till regs dropped in Indiana on 7/1 which made it no longer available. I mixed up your v1 about a month ago and I must say the smell when fresh mixed was damn near dead on side by side with dregs at the bottom of a 120 of the real deal. It however had a certain quality that was just off and hard to verbalize. Not quite harsh but harsh not quite muted but muted at the same time.
I'm not sure if you've ever tried Raspberry French by JTJM but I'd bet whatever rasp in that is the same used in Shurb. They taste quite similar on that note. I'm inclined to believe if there are other berries in Shurb they are from some other source and in addition to that base raspberry.
People generally accept that FA Raspberry is Raspberry French apparently.
Most of the versions come out muted until they steep, but that shouldn't have to happen since Shurb is good from the start. I think I'm reaching that point with my latest tests so I'm getting pretty excited.
Very cool, I'm looking forward to seeing it! I mixed up 30ml of that v1 at the time and have been revisiting it a couple times a week. It's gotten quite a bit darker and has more of an orange color than the golden hue that Shurb develops with time. I put in an order for the Key Lime and Blenderize as I didn't have those two and wanted to try this revision. Will check back in after they arrive and I mix. I was really excited to see this new post as the others were archived I was unable to comment. :p Thanks again for your work sir.
My secret to a good shurbert is adding flavorwest fruity flakes it already has that inherant sherbet taste with the Orange and at 2% it goes perfectly and tones down tfa rainbow sherbert
That does sound yummy but FW Fruity Flakes wasn't out around the time Shurb came out. I've gone through and verified all the ingredients I used were out when Shurb was released.
