Beginner Blending contest - MIXXED!
submitted almost 9 years ago by VurveVurve with the Swurve

Welcome to the first annual Beginner Blending mixing competition.

This contest was built to push your ability as a mixer, teach you to adapt, and help your learn about flavor ratios.

We are proud to announce All The Flavors and E-Cig Express as official sponsors for our contest. They will be helping facilitate prizes for the winners.

You will be judged on three criteria points for each round:

  1. The basket ingredients - You must use all basket ingredients assigned to you. They must be present and noticeable in your final product. These should be the showcased flavors of your juice.

  2. Presentation - You must include a description with your juice detailing what your were aiming for, how it turned out, and what we should expect when vaping your juice. Does your description match what the judges experienced?

  3. Is it good? - Very simply put, is this something I would want to continue vaping. Would the judges add it to their weekly rotation? Did you utilize the best additional ingredients possible to elevate your juice from good to great?

Leaving out a piece of the criteria will not be an automatic disqualification, but it will be weighed very heavily against you at the discretion of the judges.

Each round will consist of a designated list of basket ingredients that must be present in your juice. You can use any flavor, up to the max number of allowed flavors for the round, from the vendors listed below to help augment your final product.

  • Capella
  • The Flavor Apprentice
  • Flavor Art
  • Flavor West
  • Flavorah
  • Jungle Flavors

I'll keep that in mind for next time when we start experimenting with caviar and fermented soy beans concentrates!

Honestly, how many beginners have JF Fuji in their arsenal?

4 points

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

It's been changed to JF or FA Fuji.

2 points

by Apexifiedalmost 9 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

Good call, I suppose. I didn't realize it was a month out, so its not really all that unreasonable. Fuji was out of stock the last time I grabbed a bunch of JF, but I haven't seen it show up in many recipes, so that's why I asked.

4 points

by ECX_FlavorLabalmost 9 years agoMixologist

It's brand new. All of our 11 new JF flavors are as good as, if not better than there corresponding delicious counterpart. (JF/FA Fuji for example)

I have made sure there is plenty in stock for you guys. :)

Or non-beginners for that matter. Cat and I are sitting on roughly 150 flavors and don't have JF anything.

I was thinking of entering since my original creation chops aren't quite as refined as Cat's and I'd like to get better, but that would rule me out unless the first round lasted long enough for me to get an order in and then figure out how to use it. :\

I -do- really like the idea of this contest though. How long is each round going to have for submission?

edit: yay /u/Vurve you're awesome!

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

We really weren't trying to make it difficult on people.

We want to make the contest to be accessible to as many people as possible, but didn't see a problem with 1 month to get the flavor.

A slight misstep in our direction.

3 points

by HeadlessMamialmost 9 years ago"I Bet I Could Clone That"

Yeah, I gotcha. Honestly the only reason I don't own any JF is because BCF doesn't carry them, and I'm so spoiled by local pickup that I only very rarely order flavors through the mail. If their Yellow Cake ends up being a game changer though I may have to change that.

2 points

by jckaosalmost 9 years ago

I mean couldn't you reveal all the required flavors in advance?

Otherwise people (I assume it's not just me) have to order the flavors every month if they are missing something. I can't get every flavor in my country, so shipping usually takes more than a week. Not even considering the shipping cost.

I like that you only have a month for each recipe, but it makes the contest quite expensive for some of us.

He's also incredibly versatile. His watercolor illustrations for Wayne's concentrates are awesome. But he also does some grim, dark digital illustrations which look amazing.

Quick question for clarification, how forefront do the basket ingredients need to be? For example, if one where to use CAP Cinnamon Danish and get a noticeable Cinnamon from it but not a noticeable pastry would that be a negative from a judging perspective? I know for example in chopped the judges need to be able to taste the ingredients but the cooks do a lot of "bending" with the ingredients.

3 points

by matthewkocandaalmost 9 years ago

THIS is a great question. Thank you. My response is the same as Vurve. Flavour bending is encouraged. Just as long as we can tell you've used the ingredient in a meaningful way, you're fine.

2 points

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

Flavor "Bending" is highly encouraged!!!

I would say that if I can taste cinnamon, I can noticeably taste the flavor ;)

by Sleepers_Demonalmost 9 years ago

Oh, yes. This is something I'm definitely going to get in on. Very excited to get the mojo flowing.

Only thing that slightly bothers me is that I can't use my bit of INW flavors.

Let's do this, though!

Why no Lorann flavorings?

3 points

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

Lorann has recently distanced themselves from vaping, making some of their flavors inaccessible.

1 points

by templepilotalmost 9 years ago

Have you got a link to more info on that? Googles giving me nada.

2 points

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

It was a silent transition.

If you go to their website, they no longer have the colorless versions available. If I'm not mistaken, they also have a disclaimer saying their products are not for vaping.

Ahh, found it.

We'll, I'm fucked. I can't taste strawberry anymore. I really wanted to do this though.

1 points

by styx66almost 9 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

I'm in the same boat. It's rare that I pick up strawberry ripe while vaping. Like the stars and moon have to align in some way and I can taste it for a few hours. But I'll try.

2 points

by styx66almost 9 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

Love this contest idea and I'm going to make my best effort.

While I understand what a globally loved and possessed flavor Strawberry Ripe is, it's unfortunate that a seems like decent percentage of people have trouble tasting it ( including me).

I hope this is a success and I can have a better experience with the next contest!

2 points

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

Then by all means use strawberry ripe with the aim of adding a fruity sweetness to your mixture.

I have a hard time testing strawberry ripe by itself as well, but it's always noticeable when I put it in a mix due to the sweetness it brings to the table

1 points

by styx66almost 9 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

That is a good way to look at it. I've never established a recipe and then added TFASR to see how it changes even though I don't taste the main profile. Now's my chance!

I've decided I'm going to be the Beethoven of this contest. Might be deaf to strawberry ripe but I'm gonna write something lovely.

Question. Obviously if someone specifies a month or something like that, it would be out of the question, as it would hold up the whole contest. But if I specify that my recipe requires steeping for a week, and get it submitted in time that it could be mixed and steep for a week even before the deadline, will the judges do that?

I really should have thought to ask this before hitting that enter contest button, but it's too late now. I was just so excited that one of my versions steeped out to be contest-worthy in a week. However, it's an atrocious shake and vape.

2 points

by Vurvealmost 9 years agoVurve with the Swurve

Contest entries will be steeped for a max of two weeks. Given the nature of the flavors, we do not expect to receive a lot of shake and vapes.

If you have a requested steep time, be sure to include it your description.

Obviously a little late, but send me a pm when we announce that we are now judging. Otherwise, 2 weeks will be the standard steep time

1 points

by ID10-Talmost 9 years ago

I did specify one week in the description, but might not have been crystal clear. If sits for two, hopefully there won't be much muting from all that Ripe. I should have waited another week before submitting to find out. Little too eager and jumped the gun. So, I'll PM you when the judging starts, thank you for that and thank you for the quick answer!
