Which cooling agent/menthol gives you that "Brainfreeze" feel?
submitted almost 9 years ago by joeong

heya guys. looking for ultra cold menthols/agents to give that kinda brainfreezey feeling. which do you guys use to get that effect?

Edit* UPDATED with new experiments

so far ive tried

  • cooling agent - cool sensation on throat (flavorless+mutes other flavors slightly), 3-5% meh normal cooling. 8-10% nice cold sensation on back of upper throa

  • Eucalyptus - Cool sensation + cooling sensation on upper throat/nose (eucalyptus flavor+smell) 2% nice nosey cooling + distinct eucalyptus flavor

  • Strong mint - nose opening sensation + strong throat cold hit (like those strong mints eaten during sinus) (mint flavor+fragrance)

  • Spicy mint - slight cooling on throat (dunno how it tastes cos i jumbled up a few mints together)

  • Black ice FAF - minty flavor and slight cooling on throat (very distinct peppermint? flavor destroys my other flavors)

  • Menthol - 5% Slight menthol flavor, mutes other flavors at higher percentages, slight lingering cold on upper throat area. Recommended to use 0.5-2% so it doesn't mute your flavors

Next on my list to try - koolada, Ice blast, Extreme Ice, what else is super cold?

INW Eucalyptus Mint and INW Mixed Mint both have that 'freeze your brain' feeling to them. I mix a very simple "Koala Breath" for when I'm feeling that scratchy throat/head-cold feeling coming on. It freezes the nose and has that strong eucalyptus flavor of Halls Mentholyptus lozenges.

Koala Breath

  • 2% INW Eucalyptus Mint
  • 1% TFA Koolada

Then another INW favorite is their Mixed Mint. Strong on peppermint, but there's hints of wintergreen and spearmint in there, with a really nice medium mouthfeel. It too has that 'freezes your sinuses' feeling that lingers. Love it.

Mixed Mint: Bold

  • INW Mixed Mint 1.4%
  • TFA Koolada 0.5%

If you said cooling agent couldn't achived your desired effect, I think you're not getting the real cooling agent. Real one is cooling agent ws-23.

i tried up to 5% cooling agent in my flavored juices and it gives a really minimal throat cooling kick. Its definitely real cos my friends tried and said "omg so cold" but it still wasnt enough for me to get that effect that i wanted... i've become a brainfreeze chaser

Menthol if you want to freeze your throat/brain off. Koolada is you want a subtle chill. You could also try mixing both of them for a colder sensation.

thank you. i was trying with pure "cooling agent" but wasnt achieving my desired effect. Thanks a ton! im looking for like.... a "ten second 7-11 slurpee drag" kinda mad cold vape. what % of menthol should i start off at? 4%?

TFA Menthol is very stong, I would start out at like 1.5% and increase per taste. Koolada is like .5-1%

Well I guess it varies a lot by person because I use TFA menthol and 9% is the sweet spot for me, not weak, but not stupid strong either, just right to be ADV

I've been vaping for a while and just recently got into DIY because MBV no longer carries my adv (Menthol). Here is my mix if you really want a nice clean cold flavor.

8% Menthol (TFA/TPA)

5% Koolada (TFA/TPA)

I mix at 80pg/20vg 3 nic in an Atlantis 2 on a Pico @25watts

I've been through a few iterations of this flavor. Different combinations of 1% all the way up to 10%. If you really want it to be cold to the point it gets hard to vape, mix both at 10% each.

wow haha those are really high amounts of menthol & koolada! what other flavors do u mix in? i find fruity flavors kinda get muted when too much coolant is added

INW Eucalyptus w/ Mint is very much cooling, more so than any mint/menthol you will find out there, but the earthy tone of the eucalyptus can be kind of tricky to work with. So far nothing has given me a brain freezy feeling so I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about in regards to that aspect

thanks! a local brewer here does an awesome ultra cold literally "brainfreeze" on first puff kinda vape and i love it. the flavor is full of sugar tho im guessing maybe 5% sugar... thats why im on a quest to remake a less sweet version!

Actual menthol. Menthol crystals or as someone else said some TFA menthol, which is basically the same thing but premixed. Just be easy on it because a little goes a long way.

have tried menthol yesterday and turned out better than expected! will try higher amounts later today

i keep a 30ml bottle of menthol (mixed, not concentrated) on deck at all times... i mix small amounts into my tank once or twice a day... i love the oomph it adds to my blueberry flavors...

Not entirely sure yet, just started mixing myself. I can however tell you from experience 4% is way too much lol. Could see 2% being good.

Menthol, eucalyptus, mint, etc, as you've noticed those all impart a particular flavor. Koolada is the only thing I've used that adds this mysterious cooling effect without adding flavor. If that's all you're looking for then you should definitely try koolada. It's effective/noticeable at very low percentages (under .5%) and I've used it up to 5% to accurately recreate the sensation of drinking blended ice, like in an orange julius.

just saw this! 5% gives a supercold flavor? like a frozen slurpee? will definitely try a 5% koolada with some basic mango later thanks for the tip!

I would start low, even 1% can be pretty potent. You can always add more, right? I use about 1-1.5% to make a spot-on orange julius which is basically just juice concentrates, cream, and blended ice. And konada just posted a nice milkshake recipe that uses a very small amount (under .5% IIRC) to simulate cold ice cream.

I use UK based Vapable menthol flavour and it's damn cold at 4%. Unfortunately I don't know who produces it for them. Still on a search for better mint/menthol from the usual retailers, no luck so far though.

yeah thats the trouble im facing now too. have a local juice thats freezy cold that i love and im trying to replicate that effect! (cos its waaay too sweet for me) i estimate 5-6% sweetener used in that brew :/

I've tried ECX's Koolada, FW's Extreme Ice, and menthol crystals.

I really like the Extreme Ice @15%. It's the coldest vape I've had and it gets unpleasantly cold in winter. The problem I have with it is that it's a mix of several minty type things (wintergreen, spearmint etc) so it doesn't mix well with many other flavours IMO. Basically tastes like toothpaste, but in a good way, lol.

Koolada sounds great on paper but at low % it mutes, and at higher % it imparts a very chemical taste to me.

The menthol crystals were ok but it was a long time ago that I was experimenting and menthol is pretty much menthol anyway.

I think your best bet would be to layer all the cold things together ala Extreme Ice. If you want to go full retard on this case, you could try some of these.

thanks! will wait for extreme ice to get back into stock again too. cold is great for me cos its always summer here and i love the cold sensation it gives me in this blistering heat! (im from Malaysia)

btw that article.. haha wow thats hardcore scientific stuff
