Well hello there, you glorious bastards you! I'd like to welcome you to my first recipe post outside of the monthly recipe threads. This isn't due to the fact that I think this recipe is necessarily better tasting or "master crafted". It's mainly due to the fact that even though this is a simple recipe it is highly modular. In keeping the main 3 ingredient lemonade base, you could essentially pile all fruits you want on top of this baby and I guarantee it will at least be vape-able if not fantastic.
- FA Black Currant 1%
- FW Blueberry 3%
- CAP Italian Lemon Sicily 1%
- LA Lemonade 5%
- TPA Sweetener 0.5%
The Lemonade - The lemonade base is comprised of FA Black Currant, CAP Lemon Sicily, and LA Lemonade.
FA Black Currant - Black Currant is really an under utilized ingredient. Considering the quality of this flavoring, one would expect to see it in literally every recipe that calls for a "tangy" fruit note. Sitting in the recipe at a modest 1% it lends to the tang of the lemonade while also asserting itself into the blueberry, offering the same amount of "realistic" tang you would get from an actual blueberry. I chose to add it at 1% because at lower percentages it wasnt pronounced enough or having the required effect and at higher percentages the black currant starts to muscle the other flavors around a bit turning it into a black currant lemonade (probably not a terrible thing to be honest but thats for a different recipe.)
CAP Lemon Sicily - In most instances (as we will see later) one would use FA Lemon Sicily to add to the natural flavor and tartness of the lemonade. Seeing as I wanted to make a sweeter "sugar'd down" lemonade I opted for its CAP counterpart. Sitting in at 1% its just the right level, subtly adding to the overall sweetness and lemon taste of the lemonade.
LA Lemonade - Oh bud, let me tell you something. If you have ever tried to make a lemonade recipe and have yet to try LA Lemonade you are in for a treat. From my experience with the flavor (and LA in general) even though it tends to be a "weaker" flavor it has a very authentic and pleasurable taste when used at a "higher" percentage (I air quote "higher" because only with the advent of extremely potent flavorings needing to be scaled down to sub 1% levels has 5%been considered a high percentage.) From research and personal preference, I have found that LA Lemonade at 5% is a pretty static percentage for a lemonade base in recipes.
The Blueberry
FW Blueberry - This is probably one of my more favorite berry flavorings. While it is indeed a bit on the less "authentic" side as far as blueberry flavorings go, It is a really fucking good tasting blueberry flavoring. In this recipe I wanted an overall "sweetness" to the whole feel of the vape so I ask what is possibly a better blueberry here than FW Blueberry with its sweetened artificial candy berry goodness? Standing at a strong 3% in this recipe this blueberry is nice, strong, and sweet. Also the FA Black Currant helps to lend a little tang to give the blueberry a slightly "real" taste.
TFA Sweetener - In most recipes I would definitely say "sweetener is optional" but in trying to hit this profile I have found it to be necessary. The sweetener adds to the overall sugary taste you would expect from a sweetened lemonade drink.
This is the way that I prefer this recipe and (obviously) have tailored it to my liking. But, as I explained earlier this recipe is indeed a bit modular. If you keep a few of the core flavorings together (sometimes augmenting even the base) you can still come out with a recipe that needs minimal tweaking and is very enjoyable. So I decided to also post a modulation or "remix" of my own recipe to also give an option for the mixer that wanted a less sugary/more natural option for this particular mix.
- FA Bilberry 0.5%
- FA Black Currant 1%
- FW Blueberry 3%
- FA Lemon Sicily 1%
- LA Lemonade 5%
- TPA Ethyl Maltol 0.5%
The Modulation - The replacements I have chosen attribute to the tarting up or naturalizing the lemonade.
In replacing CAP ILS with FA Lemon Sicily I have taken away a bit from the base sweetness while also introducing a stronger, more realistic lemon flavor to the recipe itself.
Adding in the 0.5% of FA Bilberry contributes to the "naturalizing" of the FW Blueberry. FA Bilberry hand in hand with the FA Black Currant give the FW Blueberry a more tart and realistic dimension, allowing you to taste the skin of the blueberry a little.
Switching out the TFA Sweetener with Ethyl Maltol allows you to remove the "heavy on the tongue" sweet feeling that sucralose gives while still adding to the inherent sweetness of the fruits. Unlike the last recipe, I believe the EM is completely optional and can be left out.
The Steep
The first "sweetened" version is an easy shake and vape. Due to the inherent sweetness and simplicity of the mix nothing really changes much over a weeks time. After that the Blueberry mutes a bit but not too terribly badly to consider it a failed mix.
The second "natural" needs an overnight steep to allow to FA Lemon Sicily and FA Bilberry some time to calm down. After the Shake its essentially all there, just a bit throaty.
How Much Should I Make?
Alright so, as with all shake and vapes, I personally only make enough that I know I will go through within the first week. So usually 30-60ml. The recipe is so simple and is vape-able so quickly that I don't see a real reason to make up huge batches of this juice at a time.
I Hope you guys enjoy the mix and have fun concocting your own lemonade mixes. Let me know how you enjoyed it or what you would have changed. Also, I would love it if you sent me some of your "modulations" you created.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I usually add 2-3 drops of Koolada per 30ml. This is totally optional and while it doesnt drastically change the recipe, it definitely does give it a slightly noticeable "coolness".
Excellent fucking notes. LA Lemonade is a banger.
LA Lemonade is just so good that I've yet to give other lemonades their fair shot. Definitely one of the few but VERY high quality LA flavorings I still use.
Does FA Lemonade cloud-up your liquid? I find that it does to mine, so I've not used it much...
Nice one, man. I am totally starting with your 'modular' version soley on the account that I do not have CAP Lemon Sicily.
This looks pretty amazing. Don't have all the required flavorings, but I'm adding them to my next order.
Been craving a good blueberry. Too often they are overly syrupy in commercial juice, and being new in my DIY journey, I've kinda avoided them out of fear. But I'm really interested in mixing blueberry with lemonade as I think it sounds like it work work really well.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Good luck man! Remember to also throw some other stuff on that base and give it a try. I'd imagine 2% FA Forest Mix or your preferred strawberry flavoring would feel right at home. Lemonades are pretty forgiving (almost as much so as strawberry and creams). Experiment!
Where did you get your FA Black Currant? Couldn't find it a while back and ended up settling for FW Black Currant, which tastes like waxy fake candy to me.
I'll have to mix this up with FLV lemonade, HS Blueberry, & JF juicy lemon subs.
Don't forget to sub out the sweetener for DIYFS Holy Vanilla! Joking of course but let me know how that FLV lemonade is on the real though, I've been eyeing it but LA Lemonade is too good to easily betray.
Lol I need to reorder Holy so bad. It's been months again. Was gunna sub out sweetener for erythritol c;
FLV lemonade is delicious, almost perfect. A bit throaty at times, though. Been meaning to try LA's forever now.
Definitely need to give it a try. Sounds to me that FLV is more akin to freshly squeezed lemonade as to where I would compare LA to a Country Time mix. Regardless, FLV does have some pretty solid concentrates so I'll definitely pop it in my cart next time I make a purchase.
