Hi guys, resident sizebar nazi and notable asshole here. I just wanted to open a thread to address some glaring problems with me and my contribution to this sub-reddit. First of all, I know I've been a major asshole. And I want to apologize profusely for that. There's no excuse to behave the way I did, especially in the last month or so.
I did a bit of self-reflecting, and I asked myself why I acted the way that I did. I realized that a lot of negative energy from my personal life was visibly translated into my posts, and subsequently, this lovely sub-reddit. My animosity towards newbies was totally uncalled for, and obviously, my comments turned a lot of guys off from vising the thread. For that, I do apologize.
A year ago, I had an ambition to mix e-liquid. I started out the same way a lot of you did. I was frustrated at the price of premium e-juice, and the ones that I've vaped just seemed lackluster. So after a bit of searching, I found /r/DIY_ejuice. It was almost like a revelation in my life, suddenly I had a new found hobby, and suddenly, I felt so excited to be a part of a community. The folks who did help me were great and I told myself I wanted to be like them. I wanted to be someone who taught people and empowered them with knowledge to mix their own e-liquid. I wanted to be someone who made mixing fun, positive and enriching. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Over time, my own personal animosity manifested into something ugly, like a cancerous tumour that permeated and spread. I took pleasure in belittling noobs and being an overall jackass. For that, I apologize.
I can't dwell any longer on the things I've done in the past. I could create a new account and start over, but that's not me. I feel like that's just running away. So I have to embrace my past, to start a better future. And I hope this thread will be the catalyst that starts that.
Moving forward, I'll try to be a nicer person. I'll try to be a lot more helpful to newbies (especially to newbies). Rest assured, I'll be contributing a lot more to the new mixers' thread. Once again, from the bottom of my heart, I'm sorry guys.

> What is this?
I've seen this same phenomenon in wildly disparate communities, both in RL and online. The bottom line is that any community that shits on its newbies to the point of driving them away isn't a community, it's a ego-stroking circle jerk with gatekeepers. And any time there's (even potentially) money involved, it's 10x worse.
In my experience, most of the people acting like assholes in learning communities don't have an epiphany like the OP did, they just fade/drift away when their toxic behavior isn't as accepted as it was before. Not only that, many times they'll attempt to harm the community on the way out- though that's not quite as easy to do with this particular subject.
Having been a part of a community that literally took a few years to get rid of its most toxic members, it's amazing how much people are willing to contribute and share (and have fun) when they aren't made to feel bullied.

> What is this?
Tbh I've been setting on the sidelines of this sub for a long time and most of the questions I see from noobies are met with a ton of backhanded comments. It HAS turned me off of ever asking questions on this sub. Period.
Same tbh. I'm not a noob, but I don't really post here because I can't stand the weird atmosphere of dick riding people because of notoriety and disrespecting new mixers for asking simple questions that I see here a lot...
I lurk from time to time because there is good info around, but to hell with asking a question just to get treated like shit. It's when people start actively being douchey enough to discourage others from mixing that I kind of draw a line and say "yeah, if these are the kinds of people in the scene, I'd rather not associate with them".
I'm smart enough to realize that I can learn from this sub still, but I kind of feel like this sub has a really odd fixation on superiority. That feeling probably comes more from what I've seen that what I've personally experienced, but It is what it is. Obviously these feelings don't encapsulate the whole of what I think makes up the sub, but it's a big part of it and it's posters and it does bother me in a way. I just wish the whole superiority shtick would fade away. Just because you made a popular flavor doesn't mean you're "King DIY" all of a sudden.
Idk. I'm ranting at this point but I just hate the there are people here driving people away from DIY. That's like a mortal sin imo.
Says a lot that I'm reconsidering even posting this though.
The following is a copy-paste of something I posted about a month ago, after noticing the behavior of some of the sub's regulars towards new people trying to learn, post recipes, or simply start a conversation. This type of douchebaggery is unfortunately promoted by those who self-proclaimed themselves as "experts" simply because a few of their recipes became popular.
>Here are some exmaples of DIY elitistism:
>- Don't ask questions. Read the sidebar, noob.
- Too Long. I didn't read. Do a search, I'm sure this question has been answered a 100 times.
- If you are using additives or sucralose, you don't know how to mix.
- ELR is garbage, and full of shit recipes, that's why I never post my recipes there.
- Good recipe, but I could've done it better, using superior flavorings.
- You can't substitute a flavoring in my recipe, it's a piece of art as it is. It's too bad you ran out of that flavoring, you should've bought the 16oz bottle.
- Why are you mixing with TPA, FA, and Capella? Their flavorings are trash. You need to pay double or triple for FLV, MB, MF, OoO, WTF, ROFLMAO and some other flavorings made by some obscure company where they extract flavorings from the tears of starving children.
- You want to start a mixing club where you send each other crap recipes, be my guest. I'd rather mix what this youtuber is telling me to mix.
- Better yet, don't bother mixing, just buy concentrates. It's the best deal.

I made a comment yesterday about how it's really evident around here (as a whole) how noobs get shat up on. Like I understand you guys don't want the place to be flooded with amateur questions and the content go downhill, but everybody should be a bit more reasonable. I'm still kinda a noob and I don't really have any questions, but if I did I'd be petrified to make a topic and ask lol..after a couple weeks of research you already have the hang of it tbh. So that noob isn't a noob for very long.
Had no idea what you did, until I read the screencap. You were a real shitty person. I hope you really mean what you're saying, and not just looking for a pay on the back.
Posts like this is what the community needs! I never post anything, just an addicted lurker. I believe this is spawned from a lot of the negativity I read. Seeing this makes me feel better about posting stuff in the future (once I can develop stuff better ;) )
Spoken like a true attention whore. It's too bad people don't see your arrogance for what it really is: a way to cope with your lack of talent. I've seen noobs, that you shat on, post more interesting stuff than you ever did.
Oh yeahh baby, give me the attention I so desperately crave.
Ain't nothing but a thang, the most important thing in life is yourself, finding and becoming one with your core is crucial as you're alone inside your own head, we all slip from our forged paths and that's part of growing as a human, it takes a mature person to admit their slips and grow from them, for that, I truly respect you. I'm glad you're finding more positivity in your life. Best of luck friend.
Thank you. That means a lot coming from you.
ok so like um can you tell me whats the greatest strawberry flavor of all time thats less than 50 cents and that doesnt need to steep cuz im on a budget. oh also they need to sell it at dollar general. thanks man im new
Not sure if you're joking but TFA strawberry ripe. Always TFA strawberry ripe. Just because of how versatile and easy it is to obtain.
Well I'm serious. I found a strawberry I figured had to be about the best there is, a few years back and haven't tried the TFA brand. The Strawberry I have been using is in the "VZ" line at Vaping zone and is just called " VZ- Strawberry ". Have you tried the sc strawberry? I'm out of Strawberry, getting ready to make an order, and just had to ask! Thanks...
I honestly figured something was going on in your personal life. I've seen you on here for a long long time now and even though you've never been one to tolerate stupidity, you usually seemed to be more even tempered when calling people out.
Either way I'm glad you've come around because you're a pretty damn good mixer and you have a lot to contribute.
Unfortunately you aren't alone. I had it with the constant disrespect and the way people talked down to me so I deleted all but my first post. And this one. I'm done participating if a bunch of assholes with inflated egos are going to run around pissing on people trying to learn and join a community that at its very core is supposed to be about helping people to begin with. It's a bummer because this could be a really powerful resource, and there are so many genuinely awesome people willing to help in any way. Anyway.. It takes some balls to man up and apologize for doing something regretful like that, and that bumps you up a notch in my book. Back to lurking...
<3
Yoooo, when you gonna drop another dank custard. We're all waiting man...
I been uninspired lately. You are probably talking 'bout Raz Custard. Have you tried Caramel Almond Custard from this thread? I have had some repeat business with it.
I hope to get creative again soon, I have just been making other's killer recipes, like your Strawberry Milks.
Been reading this sub for a while now and ordered my first tools and liquids yesterday. The sidebar is great. But my questions I asked somewhere else. Might ask here if I ever have a question that requires 8 chemistry phds to be properly answered.
Thanks for the sidebar.
This is the whole reason we have a new mixers thread. It's updated weekly and monitored by some of the mods and very active community members. If you ask a question there no one will bitch no matter how simple it is. If you post on the main page, your post better not be "I CAN HAZ CLONE?" Or "Where can I buy my stuff?"
Good on you for recognizing the problem, apologizing and trying to fix it. You certainly arent the only one, the sub became quite hostile at some point. I cant pinpoint exactly when it happened but i pretty much stopped posting here for a long time except for the random post now and again, i put my efforts into helping people on ELR forums and their chat or PMd people who were shit on if i happened to be lurking at the time.
Ive been mixing almost as long as i have been vaping, somewhere around 4 years, and love to share what i have learned with new mixers no matter how many times a question has been asked or if it is in the correct thread or not. Being downvoted for helping people carried over to when i posted recipes in the monthly threads, which normally mean nothing but these were "fuck you" votes, i deleted them all along with many of my other posts and walked away. Personally i found it sad and difficult to do so as there were still so many people who need help.
I understand that a great deal of time, and even money, was put into the incredible resources in the sidebar. But the hostility and some of the shit that was said to people who came/come here asking their first questions is fucking ridiculous, of course i am not speaking about anyone in particular, they know who they are.
No one wants the sub cluttered with questions easily answered by reading the sidebar, using a modicum of decorum is just as easy as getting all bent out of shape and it doesnt chase away new mixers, some of whom get butthurt quite easily as we have seen, who may eventually have something worthy to input to the next batch of new mixers.
Sorry for the long rant, i have kept quiet for a long time on this matter and this seemed to be a good time to speak up. Ill stfu now and go back to watching the murder network while mixing with these NETs i recently got.
I tend to stay away from posting in this sub reddit. It's toxic and filled with DIY-MasterRace mentality. I'm quite active on several Facebook groups (here comes more downvotes for mentioning DIY Facebook Satan groups) but avoid being active here from the toxicity of this community. I saw someone chew out someone else here once, in the NEW MIXER question thread, for not using the fucking side bar! Fuck.
But! Your post has made me reconsider my position of never posting here. Maybe I'll stick around.
Or be downvoted to oblivion in typical reddit fashion.
Tl:DR Ya'll need to chill the Fuck out and quit with the superiority complex.
End rant.
Very respectable, mature and admirable of you.
We are all human, we make mistakes, we grow and learn, we all have our own lives and challenges within.
The fact you recognize your faults, and want to change those and be a better person, makes you a better person right then and there, the rest...is easy. :)
Tbh you weren't wrong, just handled it poorly. Im mainly a lurker here but I was able to learn everything I needed from the sidebar and searches. The sub is organized well and had a place for new mixer questions, recipes posts, etc. Don't let this mute you around here. We still need u.
OK, we will hold you to it. You might want to change your flair now too ;)
I've actually been lurking for quite a while here (more than I'd like to admit) and never signed up because of the apparent non-forgiving attitude towards not only new mixers, but people new to reddit in general. I just didn't wanna deal with the flak associated with being a newbie and was satisfied with just reading and staying on the sidelines.
Your post encouraged me to finally sign up and I hope this post heralds a shift in attitude towards dealing with newbies in general.
I'll also take the chance to give a way overdue thanks to this community. You guys opened a whole new world to me and I'm loving it. I seriously can't imagine life without mixing/diy now which is funny. I've actually been always obsessed with perfumes/odors, so this hobby is perfect for me. Thank you all again :)
Btw, is it possible perhaps to set up another sub solely dedicated to newer mixers and leave this one to more high level discussions/recipes/contests/etc ? or is it too redundant ?
Cheers
Hey, welcome to the sub! Yeah, I can see how it can be off-putting towards newer mixers. And that's also part of the reason why I want to change. Glad to hear you found a new hobby. We don't have a sub for that, but we do have a thread where new mixers can ask questions freely. I think it's stickied above.
I can relate! I co-admin'd the old Gang-wars forum back in the day and had a very similar experience and am proud to say, I handled my situation likewise!
We all go through our dark times. Having the integrity to make amends is rare! I don't know you, but look forward to getting to know you. Best to you...
I appreciate the appology I know me and you have been going back and forth lately and I wasn't sure why. I know everyone has things going on in there life and sometimes it's not hard to start to project them on others. But I'm glad that you have realized the errror of your ways and willing to change. That shows signs of growth! Keep it Up man!
I feel you, man. I used to be a bit harder on newbies then I stepped back and realized that about a year, ago I was in the same position as some of the newbies. However, I feel like you and I are different than most beginners in the sense that when we find a new hobby, we research the hell out of it before fully jumping in. When I do something, I want to do it right and I want there to be as little mistakes as possible.
The people just jumping into DIY absolutely need to do their part in reading everything that everyone has already covered. I think this is where most of yours, and my, frustration comes from. We know that there are others that have spent so much time and research on topics, that it pisses us off when some just has the "gimme, gimme, gimme" attitude and they essentially disregard all that hard work us, and others have done for this sub.
I wish you well, brotha and if you need someone to chat with privately, I got your back!
yes, but i think even if you read all of the sidebar and even if you probably are creating recipes better then the self hyped top members here you know that you gotta tread lightly as you are not one of them, always defending them selfs and looking at this DIY as a competition and a excuse to behave bad. I yet to find a good recipe from most of them self proclaimed gurus.
Contribute. Do not be afraid to contribute. Once you establish yourself as a contributor, people will take notice. You also gain a lot of knowledge from contributing. I couldn't care less about who the creator is of a recipe. If I find that it fits my palate, I'll mix it. Everyone has a preference and any recipe that anyone submits will not please everyone or fit their palate.
I've been trying to be more helpful as of late, too. However, no need to apologize my man. It's the Internet. Overall, if someone's gonna get so affected by comments someone leaves on a reddit thread, they shouldn't be on the Internet in the first place. Or just go to tumblr where everyone is stroking each other's egos in a "safe space."
However. I respect this a lot. I respect you as a great member of this sub, and I hope you find peace with whatever has been affecting you. Always here if you need anything, brother.
Sometimes we need someone to be that asshole.
I know we don't want to discourage new people, after all the more people that are active will contribute to better quality recipes. It's hard to just sit back and watch the same posts every day that make us all want to bang our heads on the wall.
You may have crossed the line a few times, but I know that myself and others appreciate your contributions to this sub. Your flavor reviews have always been on point, and your strawberry milk has been an inspiration for me to revisit the strawberry cream flavor profile. I'm excited to see some positivity from you! Above all else, I hope you find yourself in a better situation in your personal life. Much love.
Don't sweat it dude. Yeah, you've been a bit harsh lately and you could have said things with a bit more tact but mostly, not always, you've had the good intention of keeping this sub free of daily repeat posts of the most simple questions. You are guilty of being over the top with your comments but i kinda get it. That being said you've been a great contributor to this sub as well, and I've been impressed with some of your more 'out there' recipes. So I'm glad you've noticed your bad side, let's have more of them interesting recipes.
Takes a brave man to admit you did wrong and apologize like you just did. Kudos! Gonna (if possible since it's one of my favorite recipes ever) enjoy your Strawberry Milks even more now!
