Setup: Plume Veil RDA; dual parallel @ .40Ω; cotton wicks; 45W
Testing: FA Mangosteen @ 3%; Aged: 13 days
Flavor description: Bright, sweet, and very juicy tropical fruit flavor. I would describe this as somewhere between a sweet pink grapefruit and a dark cherry or light blueberry. Very unique taste and slightly sharp on the tongue.
Off-flavors: Gets a bit floral above 2 or 3%, but fades after a decent steep.
Throat hit: 6/10
Uses: Great for a summer time or tropical mix. Could also be used to give boring or tart fruit flavors an sweet boost without over-powering a blend. This could also possibly be used in a pinch to mimic some of the juiciness of INW Cactus at very low percentages, but it is definitely not the same thing by any means, especially once you compare the two flavors over 1-2%.
Pairings: Tropical flavors. Also, citrus, peach, strawberry, apple, or basically any fruits needing a sweet little boost.
Notes: I would like to thank /u/id10-t for suggesting this on my last order. It's very pleasant and refreshing as a standalone, and I can also see it being a great addition in any fruit recipe.
EDIT: Forgot to state that this does not taste like a mango, nor is it intended to, as a mangosteen is something different.
You're welcome! Ask for a little known, little used flavor that's worth trying and ye shall receive.
I'll repeat part of my half of our conversation about it here:
I have no idea how accurate this flavor is because I've never tried a real mangosteen. 1%- mild, tastes like some kind of exotic berry. 3% - Unique, tastes like very sweet peach combined with sour grape and just a hair of the vanilla musk perfume worn by my first love 21 years ago. Sweet and juicy, also like that girl, not dry. I like it. 4% - Perfume now too strong, unpleasant floral note, abort mission.
A recipe I saw here which is the reason I ordered this, although I haven't gotten around to mixing it yet, MANGO MERINGUE by /u/Steepanddeep:
- 2% Philippine Mango - TFA
- 1% Mango - INW
- 1% Mangosteen - FA
- 2% Meringue - FA
- 1% Fresh Cream - FA
- 1% Marshmallow - CAP
A recipe I found on Dot1ml that I've been meaning to try as well, Kcstraps' Mango Tango:
- 2% FA Mango
- 2% FA Mangosteen
- 1% FA Coconut
- 1% FA Mandarin
Two recipe ideas that I thought up after single-flavor testing it, but haven't mixed yet:
Mangosteen Colada:
- 2% FA Mangosteen
- 2% INW Pinacolada
- 1% FA Rum
Franc-in-steen's Strap-on:
- 2% FA Fuji
- 3% FA Watermelon
- 3% FA Strawberry
- 2% FA Mangosteen
edit: typo
Mangosteen is great and you guys should really give it a try if you get the chance. It's basically a mixture of sweetness with an underlying tartness and creaminess. The flesh is actually very soft, and melts in your mouth, almost like a custard. There's also a seed in the middle, which you're not supposed to eat.
F-me for not mixing with this one or TFA Jackfruit yet, which I got specifically for summer fruit mixes.
Thank you for this review. I'll be using Mangosteen to combat some Seasonal Affective Disorder for sure!
I can't believe I made "summer mixes" all summer without this flavor. Would've been a nice addition.
I really like tfa jackfruit. I've been working on a mix with it paired with pineapple, blueberry and coconut and a splash of Jamaican rum, pretty tasty.
Oh man. That sounds delicious! Thinking of sharing that recipe when you're happy with it? I'd love to mix it up. :-)
I don't mind sharing but it's really not a finished product.
TFA Jackfruit @ 4%
TFA Blueberry Extra @ 2%
TFA Pineapple @ 1.5%
TFA Coconut @ 1%
TFA Sweet Cream @ 1%
TFA Jamaican Rum @ 0.7%
Like i said not finished yet, thinking i will follow /u/ID10-T lead on his pina colada and try a mix of FA coconut and TFA coconut candy and probably a different cream. The rum takes at least a week to mellow down and i also like to add 4/5 drops of koolada to chill it out.
Nice write up. I love mangosteen and I'm about to make a big FA order so this couldn't have come at a better time. Will definitely go on the list, makes me glad I've been procrastinating about placing that order.
What else is on your FA order if you don't mind me asking? I might be able to suggest a must have or two.
Of course i don't mind you asking. Actually the main reason for working on a big FA order is i want to try out their floral flavors to pair with some green teas, so first on the list are Jasmine, Lavender, Rose, (probably) Violet. Other flavors i'm looking at are; Meringue (love this), Fuji, Almond, Apple Pie, Bergomot, Butterscotch, Cookie, Gin, Lemon Sicily, Oba Oba (read the recent review and had me curious), White Peach, Pear, Red Touch, Lime Cold Pressed, Lychee, and now Mangosteen.
So quite a few but i'm planning on ordering from Italy so i need to get everything i want in one hit. Any advice on what i should add or skip would be most appreciated as i've only tried a few FA's. Some of these i have seen in recipes and some are just ones that have me interested.
The ones you're looking at look solid. I've have half of them with all good experiences. Other noteworthy ones worth checking out: Bilberry, Vienna Cream, Cream Fresh, Marzipan, Joy, and Torrone. Torrone is probably my favorite single flavor, then again I'm a bit eccentric when it comes to taste. Get some Torrone though, it's a real game changer at a lower %, and kick ass standalone 3%!
