How much spending is expected?
submitted about 9 years ago by Eaves12

I want to get into mixing. I have 0 experience but am a fast learner.

I will be ordering EVERYTHING internationally as my country doesnt have any of the supplies.

how much pg, vg, and flavors am I gonna go through to make my first vapeable liquid?

I am guessing the aspect of trial and error is expected.

How much should I order to start learning and testing?

Bonus question: is it safe to ship pg, vg, and flavors for long periods of time? usually 5-10 days.

About the vg and pg buying, try to ask at your pharmacy/drugstore, i just discovered in my country (in EU) i can buy as much as i want and ask any % of each i need (eventho taking them separately is better in my opinion). If i take shipping prices into account it's a much better deal than any online solutions.

I'm a begginer as well i made the mistake of buying a bunch of flavours and go by trials and errors which can be quite disapointing considering you have to wait to realize that your juice isn't that good.

I personnaly have made a new order some time ago and read this very good post and bought those 18 or so flavours that allow you to make 10 different recipes to understand what kind of things you can make with a limited amount of flavours is somthing that appealed me (have a look at the "An Economical First Order").

Good luck !

as someone also in the EU amazon.de sells 1l of VG for 7-9€ depending on the brand (the one I have now from a shisha supplier for 7€, same to me as the 9€ one from chemdiscount), whereas I would pay a few euros more for 100ml at a pharmacy :/

I live in Switzerland, chemdiscount and amazon.de (.fr etc...) don't ship here and since there isn't an amazon.ch i'm kinda screwed :)

The thing is here pharmacies sell 85% VG and i don't want the extra water, so it's still kinda hard to find it at a normal price

I spend around $75 every 4-5 months restocking on pg, vg, and flavorings. I don't experiment a lot, I vape whatever I make. My Gf and I go thru about 20ml a day. Hope this helps.

They'll be just fine in shipping.

It's hard to say how much you will spend, because it depends on how much trial you're wanting to put in. I've spent a few hundred, but I literally have over 100 flavorings. It's a hobby for me since I like to create original flavors. If you don't care to create your own, you can save a lot of money just by copying popular recipes.

If you do want to create original flavors, I'd recommend sticking to one or two flavor profiles you know you like (e.g. creams, fruits, or mints) and order a few flavors within that category. I made the mistake when I first started of ordering one type of cream, one type of custard, etc., when the best juices are going to require a mixture of multiple types of custards/creams to achieve the perfect custard flavor.

Don't underestimate the power of research in this to save you money. Good luck!

thanks for the answer!

to save on shipping, I should order all of my stuff from one site. I read that wizard labs is the best.

any other sites that carry everything I need, atleast to get started.

I am a big fan of Wizard Labs. I purchase from them almost exclusively. If their international shipping isn't too much, then definitely go with them. It's awesome to be able to get 8mL samplers that only cost ~$2 ea

All of their flavorings also come in really nice glass bottles that I like to keep. Make sure you buy some measuring equipment, too, though.

Find a couple good, well-reviewed recipes, and buy what you need to make them. Cut down on the trial-and-error.

If you can get a scale, and mix by weight, I highly recommend it. Saves money on mixing accoutrements, and saves time washing in the sink.

All DIY solvents lasts a long time. Flavors go bad after 6-12 months, depending.

This is exactly what I did. I looked around to find a few highly regarded recipes that sounded good to me. All in, I think I'm at about $100 which includes:

  • Scale
  • 20 or so flavors needed for the recipes
  • 1 L VG
  • 1 L PG
  • 100 mg/ml Nic base
  • Assorted Bottles

I ended up getting a sample of Nude Nicotine nic base as I'm very sensitive to the peppery flavor, and I wanted to try out theirs due to reviews, without buying a ton at once.

VG / PG came in today. I expect my scale, flavors and bottles to come in tomorrow. I know what I'm doing this weekend!

Looks good. Those liters will go fast though. :)

Next time you re-up the nic, check out Carolina Xtract. I've had trouble with Nude and Wizard recently. CXT has been flawless since my first order with them.

That said, I have gotten Nude's Signature nic salts, and they are so-far-so-good.

Ya, I expect to have to re-order VG probably every couple months, and PG a bit less often. I'm tempted to get it by the gallon to save money, but frankly I don't have the storage space and Ms. C has been very accommodating of my hobby so far so I'm trying to keep everything on my one allocated shelf (which is already mostly full of rebuilding supplies and mods).

I'll look into Carolina Xtract. I'm sick of paying huge money for store bought juice, but I'm not trying to be super frugal. In other words, I'm willing to pay for a quality product. I'll still be coming out ahead compared to store-bought.

I'm pretty excited for this weekend. Can't wait to get my first batches mixed. Going to start with 15 - 30 ml of each as they are well respected recipes so I'm confident that they will be usable, even if they aren't perfect for me.

Where did you end up buying your initial setup at?

1 points

by Cynicatedabout 9 years ago

I actually placed two orders. I got my scale, PG, and VG from Amazon. Then I placed an order at Bull City Flavoring got the flavorings. I already had a sample of nic from Nude Nicotine.

Honestly?

I've haven't spent that much money (maybe $500 total?) and I have enough supplies to make a bunch of juice for like the next 8+ months (well it was enough for a 1YR+ when I got it all lol), and even then when I run out, I won't be running out of flavorings (those are practically still full, most have 85%+), but of PG and VG, and I can buy enough for another year for like %10 of that price, if that. (Nicotine I actually stocked up on a couple bottles of, just in case lol).

So really, it's just a matter of buying more flavorings that I want to work with (that last for quite a while!) and buying VG/PG every now and then.

Really the initial investment cost isn't that high, and after that you basically just have to buy a couple things every now and then (and hell, maybe you don't even have to do that if you think ahead and buy enough instead of being like me!)

For my first vapeable liquid, I stupidly made 30mls, and of course it was crap. So that got tossed. After that, I started making "test" doses in 5ml bottles, so I wouldn't waste so much. That worked out really well, and after wasting another 10 or so ml (out of a gallon though), I found something I really liked, and after months and months of perfecting it, it's actually my ADV lol.

Honestly, just stick around here, check out some recipes, and don't be afraid to order flavorings! Sadly they're the most expensive part of all this, but the more you have, the more you can make! And your stuff should be fine in shipping.

Good luck!

I'd say since your new order some ready mixed concentrates, that way you have some cheap vape you know will taste well.

(These are concentrates that have numerous concentrates in at the correct % to get a particular outcome)

Then find some recipes you like the sound of, list out their flavours, and buy the concentrates required. Make some small testers, and find what works and what doesn't, tailor the recipe to your taste till you feel confident enough to go it alone.

Mixing is easy, and most of the juice you turn out will be vapable, just don't over do it on flavours or it will be horrible and un-vapable, you can always add more, you can't take it out!

Edit: auto correct corrections

Grab a few fruits, a few bakeries, a few Tobacco's, a few custards, a bunch of creams, and that should be a pretty good start for $60 or so.

Over the past year... I'm at about $1500. So a bit over $100 USD a month.

What are you getting?

Pg and big by gallons, nic by liters. Flavoring by ounces.

by iLLNiSSabout 9 years ago

I'd be about the same.

When starting up, you might spend $100-$150 depending on what you by and how fancy you want your setup to be.

Once you have all your basic gear (scale, bottles, labels, etc.), you can make 1000mL of juice for less than $35.

1 points

by Datdesoabout 9 years ago

$35? I find that hard to believe based on knowing that some flavors are worth getting which means more money. Maybe around $50-70 yeah.

1 points

by affixqcabout 9 years ago

From Bullcity you can buy 1000mL of VG for $12.50, 120mL of flavoring for $7 to $20.00 ($7 for a single flavor, $20 for four 30mL bottles. I didn't include nicotine cost but that won't push it over $35.00.

Believe it. This is for 1000mL, in CAD.

I spent about $120 in all, including shipping from 3 different vendors on my initial purchase. I have around 850-900ml of vg on hand( I'm a max vg guy) , and about 240ml of nic base and about 8 10ml bottles of flavorings left.

I need to re up on bigger bottles of my all day vape flavors, some more glass bottles and then I'll be on track to not have to spend anymore money on supplies for a solid 4-5 months.

My first order to get setup was about $250 USD - 140 flavor pack from TFA for $150 & then $100 on PG/VG/Nic/bottles/scale/misc items. I then doubled down a month later & bought another 200+ flavors for another $300. I'm still going through everything to catalog my inventory. So, $550 thus far--which is a lot, but I have enough stock to open a large vape shop now (which I have no plans to do). I probably won't order anything for the foreseeable future since I am way overstocked.

Your best bet for flavorings is to find a juice you absolutely love and ADV with. Then google for clone recipes and buy the flavorings you need, and a few extra flavors to modify (check several clones and get all the ingredients). Then have fun until you find something that is perfect for you. I have like 40 flavors, but I only use 6-8 on a daily basis. My favorite name brand juice is the old Unicorn Milk. I over he years have made 2 variations I like more then any store bought juice. It's the only juice I ADV with.

A 30$ order from vapewild can get you started. Get some simple flavors and the shipping will be free at over 30$. Then go from there.

i just started mixing with my first $100 order yesterday and i got a few pointers:

  • Don't buy too many flavors at once unless you know specific flavors you really want
  • Flavorings go a long way, your first order will be pricey but you just need to restock in VG and PG when you have enough flavors
  • Don't buy too many different creams, buy more top notes like different fruits
  • Buy more empty bottles than you think you need, you will want to have many taste testers as well as steeping, using up most of your bottles.
