Making a catalog of flavors that add texture.
submitted about 9 years ago by Tiptup300

Hello, I'm looking for specifically flavors that add distinct texture or mouthfeels to recipes. Preferablly ones that don't add very much "flavor" on their own.

[EDIT] Updated the list:

  • Acetyl Pyrazine -- adds a grainy almost nutty texture to your recipes. (Thanks to hyperlite310)
  • FA Black Fire -- Like Louisiana Liquid Smoke for vape. Passes DNB for smoky without the ash taste. The texture is more in the smell, but man, if tobaccos are your thing this is the best. (Thanks to Eddit13)
  • FA Cola -- Fizziness begins with low percents around 0.5%; 1% up to 4% gives fizzy cola (Thanks to krazychic00)
  • FA Cookie -- gives a good sort of crispy/cruncy texture to a vape (Thanks to CheebaSteeba)
  • FA Joy -- makes things doughy at 1-2% but also adds a slight brown sugar/cinnamon taste. (Thanks to wh1skeyk1ng)
  • FA Marshmallow -- adds the most mouthfeel of any concentrate. It's sweet and creates a thickness. #fatcloudsbro (Thanks to goldfish18)
  • FA Meringue -- sugary skim milk left after a bowl of sugary cereal, minus the cereal flavor. Can impart a powdered sugar flavor to bakery items. (Thanks to Paleone123)
  • FA Pomegranate -- gives a mouth-coating sweetness. (Thanks to nw167)
  • FW Salt Water Taffy -- gritty salt-water feel
  • TFA Champagne -- fizziness or carbonation.
  • TFA Jackfruit -- can be used like people use INW Kacktus to add some "juiciness" to a recipe. 1.5% and below (Thanks to tet5uo)
  • TFA Koolada -- cooling sensation. (Thanks to manthe)
  • TFA Red Oak -- the kinder gentler cousin of Black Fire - use this in sweet mixes - same sinus, nose texture but rounder and smoother. If anyone is trying to nail a cig a like mix or add some smoke to a RY4, etc. Get some!!!! (Thanks to Eddit13)
  • INW Biscuit -- crispy, bready, flakyness.
  • INW Cactus -- moist juiciness to fruits, as well as lush, pillowy clouds. (Thanks to RuntDastardly)
  • INW Dirty Neutral Base -- ashyness & grit.

I currently only have a small collection, and all the flavors I listed above I haven't even tried myself yet! But they are on my list. I'm VERY interested in flavors that add texture, so please help me get a list of flavors to look into and help me weed out/fix the list I got going so far.

Thank you much guys!

In my opinion, FA Marshmallow adds the most mouthfeel of any concentrate. It's sweet and creates a thickness.

Acetyl Pyrazine adds a grainy almost nutty texture to your recipes. Also watch Wayne's video on flavor additives.

Thank you! But I would consider those more of modifiers of recipes, more-so then ones that add "physical" texture or mouthfeel to a recipe.

EDIT: Although, there are a couple there that do apply! I'll have to go through the whole post more thoroughly.

TFA Jackfruit I find can be used like people use INW Kacktus to add some "juiciness" to a recipe. I like it at 1.5% and below for that purpose.

INW Cactus. Adds a moist juiciness to fruits, as well as lush, pillowy clouds.

Added, thanks sounds perfect for all-fruit mixes without resorting to dairies, bakeries, or creams!

Exactly what I was looking for.

FA Pomegranate gives a mouth-coating sweetness. No where near to the same extent as sucralose does, but that kinds thing.

Black Fire by FlavourArt. Kinda like Louisiana Liquid Smoke for vape. Passes DNB for smoky without the ash taste. The texture is more in the smell, but man, if tobaccos are your thing this is the best. Red Oak (TFA) - this is the kinder gentler cousin of Black Fire - I use this in sweet mixes - same sinus, nose texture but rounder and smoother. If anyone is trying to nail a cig a like mix or add some smoke to a RY4, etc. Get some!!!!

TFA Koolada?

It is a physical feeling. So I suppose that is texture. I had that on the list when I originally posted it, but I removed it along with Sour. Good call.

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but TFA Dragonfruit can help to blend and round out flavors. I've heard TFA Papaya does as well, but I've never used it.

TFA Dragonfruit makes everything taste like JuicyFruit gum to me, no matter how much or little I used. I know lots of people like it, but it's one of those flavors that I'd highly suggest buying a small sample size of first.

Thanks, Does it change the physical feeling in your mouth at all though? would it be affecting your sense of touch? or feel? Ignoring the concept of taste.

TFA Champagne adds zero fizz/carbonation for me. It tastes like cheap white wine. I was a bit disappointed when I picked it up. What % gives you the fizz? I sampled it at 3% standalone so maybe I over did it?

I'm wondering the same. Mixed a lemonade recipe and I'm getting no fizz

This was just from what I've read multiple times, different sources, at minimum more than 2.

[EDIT]

Can we get this confirmed by a more experienced mixer?

Joy makes things doughy at 1-2% but also adds a slight brown sugar/cinnamon taste.

Also, when you're done, I hope you forward this info to /u/skiddlzninja so he can put it in the wiki page he and some others are working on.

Surprised not to see many custards or creams. I was thinking that they usually thickened up the mix of the liquid, do they only thicken up the flavor itself and not the feeling of vapor?

EDIT: Thinking about it, the main point was finding flavorings that don't add strong flavors in addition to textures. Perhaps that should be toned down or possibly emphasize which flavors add little taste over which ones add more taste since it would be more helpful to catalog a list of ones that affect texture and then the user of the list could from there decide if those extra flavor overtones help/hurt their recipe.

this post is getting really close to being archived.

Triacetin : Adds a thickness/smooth... -ness to your juice while also blending/muting flavors. highly situational.

common flavoring names: MTS Vape Wizard, TFA Smooth.

usage: 1 drop per 30ml up to 1 drop per 10ml. 1% -> 7 drops-ish per 30ml.
