What are some types of flavors that really surprised you, good or bad?
submitted about 9 years ago by miatatony

building my first order of flavors from ecig express, and my only experience is basic fruit flavors like banana, peach, strawberry, etc. and generally with fruits you get what you expect. I'm tempted to try a more broad range, like nuts, coffee, baked foods like cinnamon buns, pancakes, etc. While they all sound delicious I'm not sure what to expect at all and worried over getting some types of flavors that taste awful when vaped. Are there any flavors you've tried that were really surprising when you actually tried them, good or bad?

Not an answer to your question, but a suggestion... Instead of buying random flavors look for recipes on ELR you might like, and check reviews. Then buy the flavors to make those recipes. We have a lot of talented mixers that have done the hard work. I offer this advice as someone who wasted a lot of money buying random flavors...

I wish I would have listened to all of you when I started. I bought flavors that sounded good and wasted quite a bit of money on crap flavors that I will never use. Everyone needs to do this when they first start out. Find some recipes. It also cuts down on the disappointment and discouragement when your recipes don't turn out good.

Seconded. I found this sub after I started DIY'ing and bought a whole bunch of TFA flavours that may never use.

i went down this route and imo it is the wrong way to go, what you will end up with is a collection of flavourings that you will never use and dont like, granted i went down this route 18-24 month ago when the "sort by ratings" tab on elr had the top hits at 10-20 reviews , my advice to a newcomer would be buy small quantities what you think you will like (use elr "rating" for feedback) and test your flavours standalone so you can see what each brings to a recipe . only then can you taylor a recipe to your own taste buds, One mans ADV is another mans bottle of cat piss

  • FA Torrone is gold to me. Probably my favorite single flavor. I like it standalone around 3%, but 0.5% or less really adds complexity to a recipe without getting too over-powering.

  • FA Mangosteen is one I just picked up and was pretty impressed with. The floral note is rather pleasant, but it has a very bright and crisp fruit taste too.

  • FA Marzipan is really tasty by itself. Light nut and a hint of cherry, reminds me of the pink filling in a Twin Bing.

  • FA Nonna's Cake tastes like licorice to me for a while, but steeps into crappy wedding cake without the frosting after a few weeks. It was kind of a let down.

  • Lots of hype with FLV flavorings, but not worth the money IMO. I'd rather save a few bucks and use INW or FA for most things. I have to say their Yakima Hops and Blueberry Muffin are pretty decent and unique though.

  • INW has a pretty solid line of highly concentrated flavorings. Raspberry, Grapes, Cactus, and Biscuit are a few that stand out in my mind. If you're a beginner, do your homework before using more than 1-2% of most of their flavorings though because you don't need much in most cases.

  • TFA Blackberry and TFA Banana Ripe nearly made me go blind when I sampled them at 3%. Very potent for TFA.

  • TFA Ripe Strawberry wasn't as exciting to me as it seems to be for others. Pretty plain and boring IMO.

  • TFA Peanut Butter. Is that shit supposed to taste like dehydrated peanut butter powder? I've tried to like it, but it just doesn't do it for me.

  • CAP Glazed Donut was spot on to me. I feel bad that most people think it tastes like Play-Doh, because all I taste is the Little Debbie packages of glazed donuts you get at the convenience store.

  • CAP Sugar Cookie and CAP Vanilla Custard v1 kick ass. Enough said.

  • I recently tried out a bottle of FW Blackcurrant. I thought I was vaping shitty candy flavored wax. Not really impressed by very many things from FW. Most of it is too diluted, too sweet, or just crappy all around. I have to credit them with Yellow Cake even though it has sugar syrup, plus their Cinnamon Roll and Blood Orange are pretty tasty.

Edit: words and format

INW chocolate mint had a lot of promise but it ended up just tasted like burnt latex.

Inawera Creme Brulee has made me adjust many of my recipes because it was the secret ingredient I had been missing. 1 drop per 10 MLS in a fruit mix makes it fruitier and juicier. Just a great all around flavor.

What I do when I'm looking to order new flavors is copy and paste popular recipes onto one page then I just order the flavors to make those flavors. That way I for sure have the flavors to make several good flavors and can mix and match to make others as I wish.

They're all surprises. Some are more authentic than others, some don't even remotely resemble what they aim to be. But they're all artificial, mimicking a flavor, and you'll need to bring your imagination to appreciate most of them. If you haven't already, you're bound to run into flavors that you seriously dislike, no matter how much research you've done in advance. But checking reviews and general concensus will save you from some of the worst experiences. One thing to keep in mind is that you won't be eating or drinking, you'll be inhaling. I sometimes forget that while looking at the pretty pictures and order flavors I don't actually want to inhale at second thought.

Cap Vanilla Custard V1. I'd heard so much good about it and it tastes like a cross between white spirit and brandy with a hint of vomit.

You take that back right now

I take it back right now... but I cannot change the truth of my opinion! My will be done! CAP VC V1 is horrid!

What do you use in place of it?

That's what it tastes like to me before it steeps. After 2-3weeks it turns into liquid gold.

Tried that old bottle again along with a new batch and nope - still an overbearing rubber/burnt taste. Funny how I'm at -1 for simply disliking custards though, hah.

There's an upvote. I actually feel bad for you having to miss out on so many recipes that use the stuff.

Even a 4-6 week steep has made no difference. Hell, I have a bottle I made in September 2015. Diacetyl just tastes funky to me and it's a shame.

I don't like it either, no matter how much I try to. I can only really stand it at low percentage for the added butteriness.

"Stand it" is a great way of putting it. Even at say, 0.5 or 1% for a slight tinge of flavour it's still unwelcome over say Fresh Cream FA or Vanilla Custard FLV.

INW Shisha Punch and INW Exotic Roots both surprised me in a good way.

FA Oba Oba is my pick for most surprising flavor. It in my opinion is the inw cactus of creams. It's sweet and delicious. The very light citrus at lower percentages work great with a variety of recipes. I think if you're not currently using Oba Oba, you're doing yourself a great disservice.
