are all menthols created equal
submitted about 9 years ago by hodeer

Hey all, so I've been vaping on my own cream and custard juice for a while and it's losing flavour so I assume vape tongue/fatigue is at play here. I heard somewhere along that using juices with a bit of menthol are a good way to get back on the taste train.

My question is three fold

  1. is this true
  2. between all the brands and the option of crystals, is there a difference in the flavors or is menthol, menthol regardless and just strength that changes. ie. are some menthols better suited to menthol only juice and others suited to blending with fruit.
  3. is adding menthol just like any other flavour

Strength should be the only variable here if we are talking straight menthol. I have both TFA and FW menthol and the TFA is much stronger but the flavor is the same

Yeah menthol can reset your palate and help with olfactory fatigue.

Not all menthols are created equal. You can mix from crystals by dissolving 1g of menthol crystals in 9ml of PG (a 10% solution) if you want a repeatable known quantity menthol.

TFA menthol is somewhere between 10-50% menthol according to their SDS, but a long time ago Linda at TFA said that it was 66%, so I dunno if that has changed or not.

CAP menthol is substantially weaker. I personally like TFA.

Mixing menthol is a bit different than other flavorants in that you'll want to start at like 0.25% (using TFA menthol as an example) and work up from there in 0.25% increments until you are happy with the strength. I like it strong and rarely use more than 3% in a mix, some people find it unbearably overpowering at even 2%.

Good luck!

To be precise:

1 g menthol + 9 g PG = 10% w/w solution

1 g menthol dissolved in PG then diluted to 10 mL = 10% w/v solution

1 g menthol + 9 mL PG like you said = 10.68% w/w, don't know about w/v since I don't know the final volume of that solution.

This is why I wish companies would specify what kind of percentage they're using.

Correct, thanks for catching that.

Hmmm I made a mix with tfa menthol the other day and find it not very strong at 5%. Am I crazy our does it loose power at higher percent?

It that I'm aware of, but I've never gone more than ~4% with TFA Menthol.

I can't verify this but I don't think so. I know for a fact the founder of Bigglesworth Labs specifically uses Axiom's Icicles because it's superior to regular menthol.

Hm, interesting. Would you know why he regards Axiom's Icicles as superior?

Here is the thread with the recipe.

> Take out the mint/menthol and you get Nanner. My suggestion is to use Axiom's Icicles (the concentrate of which is used as the mint/menthol in Polar Bear) - you could order 0mg from Axiom and use it as a flavor ingredient, reducing VG appropriate to even out the concentration; Icicles is 20% concentrate, so if you made a 100ml bottle you would need 5ml of Icicles juice to reach 1% concentration in the Polar bear.

That's him talking about it.

And looking further down the comments, someone said Axiom icicles is menthol mixed with something else.

Nice, thanks for the link.

Icecicles is just menthol, spearmint, & wintergreen. It's nothing superior, & not a superior menthol.

Yes. Menthol CAN help vaper's tongue. Vaping unflavored can also help. Sometimes vape tongue is caused by flavor overload/too much flavoring. As for menthol quality, I personally like Flavour Art's menthol if you're going premade. Otherwise, if you buy the crystals and do it yourself, it should be the same regardless of where you get it.
