Hey guys, I know I don't post recipes that often and some of you may already have this recipe. However, for those that do not follow DIYorDIE, I figured I'd post my recipe here as well. /u/enyawreklaw has been holding a mixing competition for the past month or so that has consisted of a few phases. Check the DIYorDIE website to follow what's been going on and to mix up some really good recipes from other mixers in our community. Before giving you the recipe I just want to let you guys know that I am not the best at describing flavors, but I will do my best and hopefully /u/skiddlzninja, /u/notcharlesmanson, and Wayne can chime in to help out. Here we go.
Apple Buttah
-
4% FA Fuji
-
0.5% FA Caramel
-
0.5% FA Liquid Amber
-
2% CAP Butter Cream
-
0.5% CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl V1
-
1% CAP Vanilla Custard V1
-
1% TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
Steep Time: It will taste good as a shake and vape, but give it 5 days to do it's thing.
FA Fuji and FA Liquid Amber - These two ingredients are the main profile of this recipe and provide an amazing crisp apple on the inhale and exhale. I know I know 4% Fuji? I used FA Fuji at 4% to ensure that it was upfront, but in order to make it stand out even more I added liquid amber to give the fuji more of a baked/cider-like taste. The addition of liquid amber along with fuji is a trick that has been done by many others before me and if you ever want to make a baked apple pie, apple cobbler, or any apple dessert recipe, liquid amber is a must!
FA Caramel - This flavor used at 0.5% is another trick I learned from /u/enyawreklaw. If you've seen his recipes that include this flavor you will notice that he uses it to add complexity, help create a foundation for all other ingredients to bind to, and to add a bit of sugary goodness. I felt I needed everything that FA Caramel offers without imparting a true caramel flavor so half a percent is what I went with.
CAP Butter Cream - This is the base for my butter. CAP Butter Cream doesn't show up in many recipes and I think I know why. When you hear butter cream you think of the butter cream frosting on top of a cake or cupcake. I don't really get much of that from CAP Butter Cream. Instead, I get more butter with a slight sweetness and that's exactly what I needed here. This flavor isn't very impressive on its own and at higher percentages give me a weird waxy taste.
CAP Vanilla Custard V1 - We all know about CAP Vanilla Custard V1 and it finds its way in to about 70% of my recipes in the range of at least 1-2%. I used it at 1% here to lend its thickness and diketone amazingness without creating an apple butter custard.
TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream - This is a know offender to some and can give a peppery taste to certain unfortunate souls. If you are one of those unfortunate people, you can most likely substitute it with CAP's version. Personally I have not tried substituting TFA VBIC for CAP's, but they are relatively similar. However, TFA VBIC is used at 1% to add buttery, ever so slight vanilla, and creaminess. It does a wonderful job of binding to the butter cream and vanilla custard without imparting to much ice cream flavor.
CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl V1 - To complete the apple butter I needed a dash of cinnamon and I'll be completely honest with you guys that this is the only cinnamon flavor besides FLV Rich Cinnamon that I have. So, it needed to work here and luckily it did. It give us a very light cinnamon flavor along with a tad bit of complexity due to its bakery properties. /u/notcharlesmanson mentioned that he wished there was a bit more cinnamon coming through so you can either bump the CDS up a bit or insert your favorite bakery cinnamon. I'm definitely going to try this myself by adding a drop or two per 30mL of FLV Rich Cinnamon along with the CDS as well as without to see what happens.
Holy shit that was long, but I hope that you guys enjoy it. Thank you to the whole DIYorDIE crew for putting this competition together and for giving mixers in our community a shot at showing people what we've learned. Hopefully the other guys in the competition do write-ups on their recipes as well so we can learn more from them. If you make any adjustments to this recipe or improve it, please let me know because it is far from perfect and making it better than it is with the help of others would be amazing!
Man..this was better than anything I could have came up with. It also hits so close to home, because this tastes EXACTLY like apple butter my grandma makes (save for a touch more cinnamon in hers), so it gives that familiarity I love to have in a recipe. I think your recipe was the one that really stood out to me at first because if someone would have just handed me a bottle without a description, I would have immediately recognized it as an attempt on apple butter. Good job accomplishing that.
I really can't think of anything I would change in your recipe, other than the aforementioned bump in cinnamon I like to add (one drop per 30mL FLV Rich Cinnamon, by the way). Just the right amount of thickness, the right amount of apple; everything is balanced extremely well. I've went through at least 120-150mLs since you submitted the recipe. It's turned into an ADV for me, so thank you so much for that. Amazing job, old pal. You really hit it out of the park with this recipe. Congratulations, Jon!
Dude that means a lot coming from you and I appreciate it a lot! Are gonna add a drop of rich cinnamon instead of the CDS or in addition?
In addition to. Increasing the CDS made it weird and gave too much of a pastry flavor. The Rich Cinnamon kept a neutral cinnamon, which adds a nice touch. I'm torn on whether I like it more, though.
This and others at DIYORDIE
Sounds good...but 4% FujI is all I would taste. I sear anything over 1.5% FA Fuji and that's all I taste in a mix. Sucks for me.
If I had Liquid Amber I'd make it up though.
Yeah it'll be forward in this. I wanted the apple in your face so that's what I did. Make two small bottles if you'd like, one with fuji at 1.5% and one just like I posted.
No Liquid Amber. :(
Awesome, heard some talk about this recipe but couldn't find it, cheers for posting it! Looks yummy!
Just mixed it up and it's really good!
I was working on a sweet apple cream recently and just realized they are remarkably similar (unsteeped at least), which is funny since I was using completely different flavors. 5% NE Two Apples (Similar to CAP Double Apple, just more tart), 1% FA Marzipan, 1% Vanillin (10%), 1% FA Fresh Cream, 0.5% FA Meringue and 0.25% INW Blueberry. Yours is better, the cream is more balanced and INW Blueberry, while tasty and gives the same effect as cinnamon, really started to mess with my throat. I might pick it up again after this and try cinnamon instead :)
Congrats on the victory! I enjoyed listening to the progression on in the mix podcast. So I only have jungle flavors- fuji but really want to get the original experience of your recipe. What percentage do you think I should try using JF- fuji at? From my understanding jf is more concentrated. Any help is appreciated!
Probably 2% JF Fuji. It's a little different than FA so it's not gonna be exact, but it should be good enough Thank you for the kind words!
Cool! Thanks for the response. I was under the impression jf fuji is basically the same as fa fuji just more concentrated, but if you feel there are notable differences maybe I'll just purchase fa fuji as well. I just ordered the flavors so I could make your recipe and totally spaced that you used fa fuji. I'll have to place another order soon. In the meantime I'll try it with jungle flavors around 2%.
Just an update in case you get the same question from anyone else. I tried it with jf fuji at 2%. I don't really get much of any of the fuji notes. Just sort of a silky buttery creaminess. Which seems pleasant but lacking the apple. I'm going to try 3%. That should be the ticket.
I've done just fine without CAP Butter Cream up until now, but I put it on my list to order very soon after seeing this recipe on ATF this morning. I'll make this properly first and decide for myself obviously, but just out of curiosity, how do you think this would work mixed as a flavor base or with the overall % reduced by like half, and then added to a bunch of CAP Sugar Cookie? Asking because I tried and failed to make an "Apple Butter Cookie" recipe some time ago and this seems like an easy solution to everything that was wrong with that recipe.
Honestly, I have no Idea. However, I'd start by looking at this recipe and work from there to fit my palate. If you'd like to try my recipe as a base then work with that to try turning it into a cookie recipe, I'd be willing to collab with you on ATF. I have no problem making this into a base since I will vape it anyway!
Thanks, Goldie! I'll get back to you once I get my CAP Butter Cream in and have a chance to mix up this winning recipe and see if it's got that apple butter flavor I'm looking for.
So obviously this is just very speculative and preliminary, but just reading your description I'm thinking mix your recipe as a base and mix that at somewhere between 5% and 7.5% with about an equal amount of CAP Sugar Cookie, add some Rich Cinnamon, and done.
I'm trying to copy a cookie that's just a snickerdoodle that's made with apple butter added to the dough. I only tried it once before, some time ago, but I think it failed mostly due to not having Liquid Amber and overusing TFA Brown Sugar.
I will have to give this a try. Since you were the competotion winner I am sure it will be very good. I will need to order a few flavors to get this ready to try out however. Thanks very much for posting your hard work amigo.
Thanks. I haven't won yet, though. There's a third phase and this was the second phase. If you wait till Labor Day, I'm pretty sure vendors will be having sales. I know at least GremlinDIY will be having a sale
do you think i can sub FA caramel with TFA's,and CAP buttercream with FW's?
**Edit:**managed to get CAP's version at my local b&m right now so the only question now is if TPA caramel will do the job?
