How do I achieve the strongest menthol flavor possible?
submitted about 9 years ago by I_am_Norwegian

I've just gotten some menthol crystals in the mail. The last few months I've just wanted menthol e-juice. The strength of my mixes doesn't seem consistent though. I want to really feel the menthol, almost to the point where it becomes uncomfortable.

I've read a lot of reports saying that a flavor becomes muted if you add too much. Is that the case with menthol?

Also, what's good with menthol?

Slightly related story, I used to manage a b&m and behind the counter we had a bottle of menthol dissolved in pg to add to any juice a customer purchased if they wanted it. I'm not 100% sure what the strength was, but we were only to add 1 drop per 10 ml, so it was pretty fucking strong. I had a customer who came in and asked me to put some menthol in a blueberry juice and we started talking about the menthol itself. After about 10 minutes, the customer said he would make our shop his go-to store if I vaped it straight. Let's be clear, I thought this guy was already a regular, I saw him two to three times a week, but he claimed to visit two other shops just as often. We were the new guys on the block, so I took him up on it. I don't remember my exact build, but I was typically vaping .2 with my tugboat nemesis combo at the time. I threw in a new wick and COMPLETELY saturated it with this mixture. The store was quiet with anticipation. Inhale, flavor itself was weak but cold, exhale, slight mint flavor and feels like an ice cube is in my mouth. The rip was huge, the entry way to the store was filled with vapor; for a moment, everything was fine. Then, suddenly, and icy explosion surged through my body. It was like receiving a direct hit from Mr.Freeze. Even walking through the store made your skin cold from the menthol vapor. I had a hard time vaping the rest of the day, but I saw that guy everyday for the remainder of my time there.

I hate even the slightest hint of menthol. I won't chew most gums, much less eat candycanes at Christmas or any sort of breath mint. I stopped using kids toothpaste at 14. Sometimes I'll take a hit of a friend's setup and I can tell if they've had menthol before in the day and it makes me want to vomit. What you just described is one of my worst nightmares, to accidentally hit something like that.

Oh yeah, it was fucking terrible. Unless someone somehow monumentally fucks up or goes out of their way to do this to you, I think you're probably safe.

I HADN'T EVEN THOUGHT OF SOMEONE DOING IT ON PURPOSE TO MESS WITH ME, THANKS YOU JERK! Jk, I reaaaally hope no one hates me that much.

How do you go brushing with toothpaste?

I just powered through it tbh until I figured out that the problem wasn't having it in my tongue, it was swallowing/inhaling and feeling the freeze inside of me, if you will. I generally choose less minty toothpastes as well.

Reminds me of the time I accidentally squirted Extreme Ice FW up my nose. Cleaned out the sinuses with just a drop.

I enjoy vaping menthol straight. I use Capellas solution and the icy goodness is awesome for hot days in California.

Mix a shitload of menthol and see what happens. I'm pretty sure it won't be muted by using too much, you just might reach a point where the vapor is pretty much saturated and using more doesn't change anything. Either that or your mouth will reach Maximum Mentholification and won't be able to register a higher concentration, at which point it would be impossible to feel a stronger sensation.

Also grab some Inawera Frost. It's a strong menthol concentrate with a familiar taste but I can't remember what it is, something like Mentos or Stimorol I think. Inawera Eucalyptus with Mint is also a good standalone with a strong menthol feeling.

Came here to suggest menthol plus INW Eucalyptus with Mint (or Eukaliptus Z Mieta) to get even more frostiness. I like Eukaliptus Z Mieta at 2.5% standalone but I'm not big on menthol. I like the flavor of EZM way better and everyone that's tried it agrees.

Frost is spearmint + peppermint afaik. Aka Colgate Total at higher percentages. Eucalyptus with Mint is awesome, love the taste.

Actually I think we both got them mixed up, I was thinking of INW Mix Mint. It's either stimorol, mentos or some particular kind of toothpaste, but I can't say for sure since I haven't had either in years.

Frost has a chlorophylle taste to me, like Hollywood chewing gum. They're both familiar flavors to most people and make good standalones for menthol addicts.

Menthol crystals saturate in PG at about 65% (give or take) by weight, IIRC. It'll recrystallize if it gets cold so make certain to keep it at room temperature until you dilute it further.

Mix up a saturated menthol pg base like this and then add it to recipes as needed. 1-2% will make it chilly, 3-5% icy, and I've never been brave enough to try over 5% in a final mix.

Menthol pairs well with vanillas, mints, light fruits, and tobaccos.

The biggest issue that I have had is having too much menthol in max VG and it crystalizing. PG holds menthol better and PGA works even better than that.

Good luck and don't die

5-7% menthol, don't use more than 60% VG.

Most vendor juice is weak shit though, I'd try 2-3% first.

For 7% If you drink something within like 10 min of vaping you will get a real bad brain freeze lol.

Menthol is unlike any other flavor, the more you add will keep getting stronger.

Also it doesn't need to, and isn't changed AT ALL by steeping. Your nicotine will change, but menthols flavor does not. People who say otherwise are vaping menthol+mint, or are mistaking the changing of the nicotine's flavor as steeping

I filled a bottle half way with crystals and the rest with pg. Makes for a really strong flavoring. I'm sure you may be able to go stronger though. Menthol wont get muted the more you add but it will drown out other flavors. IMO, menthol goes good with just about any fruity flavor..

are menthol crystal that weak, or do you just really like menthol? 50% just seems like way to much. but I've never used them.

They are super strong. 2ml of that mixture has lasted me like a year.

oh man. I completely misread what you wrote. I thought you were vaping 50% menthol.

So are you only adding a few drops to each batch of a flavor you are mixing?

by aelweroabout 9 years ago

50% is absolutely insane

I can't tell the difference with anything past around 2.5% personally. You can add mint to it to "boost" it though, and cactus seems to highlight the heck out of it. A 5% menthol, 2% peppermint, 2% spearmint, and 2% cactus is about the freeziest thing i can imagine.

Im talking about making a flavoring, not a juice that's meant to be vaped.

You want strong menthol?

Grind it up with a pestle and mortar until it's about the consistency of Kosher salt. Put it in a driller bottle, fill it to the brim.

Grab some ever clear and fill the bottle about 2/3. That'll dissolve all the menthol. I'll warn you the stuff is way strong. That should do what you want

Will Dworek vodka work?

Needs to be high proof or percentage vodka. By some very brief research I don't believe that will do it

Too much menthol will hurt your tongue. What's great about it, IMO, it goes with almost any flavour, I use custurd ;)

Thanks. I added about 4g of menthol crystals to a 10ml bottle, and added as much as I could fit into my juice after finding my original mix too weak. Now it's perfect.

I use menthol crystals. 2/3 crystals to 1/3 pg by weight. Then mix at 10%. Gives a chuck Norris kick.

You can mix tfa menthol to about 10 or higher for a good th too.

Menthol for me goes well with beverage flavours and some fruits. Lemonade, raspberry, with vanilla coffee, cotton candy.

I vape menthol daily, the worse thing is that I'm so used to it that other juices don't give a throat hit any more lol.
