Juice mixers club idea/proposal
submitted about 9 years ago by thattswhatshesaid

Hey Reddit- I don't post very often, in fact I'm brand new as far as posting goes, but I've been mixing for about a year and it's become a pretty big passion of mine. I want to refine my recipes, as I'm sure you guys do as well, and expand my palate as much as possible. I was thinking yesterday and came up with an idea. would anyone be interested in forming some sort of DIYer club/exchange? I was thinking that maybe each member could send out a certain number of samples of a recipe they'd like to show case and in return be sent a number of samples back from other members. Say, you send out five 10 ML samples of a recipe you're dying to show off and in return receive that many samples once a month. We could have a forum where we can discuss the sampled recipes for that month. As I am new here and exchanging goods is part of the deal, I'd be happy to have another more reputable redditor/s sponsor this if anyone's interested until it gets off the ground, or just begin by sending out my samples for September and building from there. New members/redditors could still participate, they'd just have to send out their samples before being able to receive them. Many great recipes will never get any attention because the components they require are more obscure (not strawberry ripe) or because they are passed over arbitrarily. Would anyone be interested in in this? Not a big deal if not, but it appealed to me. Figured we won't be affected by regs as we aren't businesses, just enthusiasts. Let me know what you guys think.

EDIT: the mixers club subreddit is finished! it's a work in progress but the information has been completely updated and revised and this is how we'll be going forward for september, and most likely the months ahead. please review the guidelines and begin submitting members forms :) https://www.reddit.com/r/mixersclub/

While this is a cool idea, and in theory sounds like a good one, I feel like it would be a lot of work. The recipe thread and any recipes posted with adequate notes do a good job of conveying the flavor profiles. I don't know that any concentrates are "obscure". If you see a recipe that sounds good, all you have to do is add that to your next order. It's not like we are working with food recipes that call for something like real saffron.

Right but then you're kind of stuck with stuff you may not enjoy, and for some that's what turns them off from trying new things. Yesterday I got a flavor order in and mixed about five different very highly rated recipes and hated almost all of them. This turned me off a bit, but I would still like to experience new recipes. All this would take is sending out five samples to the redditors sponsoring, along with your postage, and that's it. That would be the easiest way to do it which is why I'm looking for someone reputable to sponsor until I can establish myself. Just want everyone to feel comfortable. Thanks for the feedback

I actually think this is a great idea. One of the reasons this is a great idea is because if you get 10 random samples, you will be exposed to a lot of flavors that you either don't have, or normally don't vape.

Here are examples of how this can be beneficial:

  • You get a sample of a Chai Tea recipe. To you it tastes like mud, now you saved $$, and you don't have to buy the flavoring and try it.

  • On ELR you see a recipe for Cinnamon Pineapple Bubblegum. To you that sounds like a terrible idea, but you vape the sample sent to you, and realize it's amazeballs. You would have never bought the flavorings or tried it this recipe otherwise.

  • You hear TFA Honey tastes like cat urine. You get a sample with a recipe containing TFA Honey, but it tastes delicious to you. Now you discovered that you actually enjoy it and need to buy it and start mixing with it.

  • This can work with flavorings too. You can send away samples of flavorings you don't like and will never use. Others might make good use of it. I'd much rather give someone my 30ml bottle of FA Black Cherry (battery acid) rather than pour it down the drain.

I had a similar idea for a ejuice club where people pass along bottles of commercial ejuice they didn't enjoy. Just know that anyone that profits in anyway from vaping will shoot down these ideas, because community sharing is bad for their business.

Hopefully that Cinnamon Pineapple Bubblegum recipe exists. I wonder if cactus would work in there...

Yup, this is exactly the thought! Glad you also think it's a good idea. I'm thinking the easiest way to organize it would be to send your five samples for the month off to the sponsoring reddit users along with your postage for five envelopes and they can have a master list and then distribute everything that come in. I would like to have a hand in organizing things as well but am totally up for someone else to do so at first while I am still establishing myself. Anyone who wants to join or help organize should PM me and we can get this thing going. I will be sending out a sample DIY recipe for September so if anyone wants to get in on this let me know :) I had a similar experience yesterday trying new DIY recipes and hated almost all of them so this would've helped me a lot

The easiest (and probably cheapest) way to do it is for one member to act as distributor.

Each person sends 4 bottles of their juice to the distributor.

The distributor then sends a package (containing the juices from the other members) to each member.

The distributor could be a different person each month so that the postage costs balance out.

Based on five members.

Yup, that's exactly what I was getting at! I can act as distributor, but more likely everyone will feel more comfortable with someone else at least until this gets off the ground. Anyone want to volunteer to distribute the samples?

I also think your idea to pass on commercial juices/flavorings is awesome :) could definitely consolidate these ideas for the community

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

so we need a distributor for September, and members. I can be the distributor for September, or if it makes people feel more comfortable since I'm new to posting, someone else can volunteer or be nominated for September. Once the distributor is chosen, PM them with mailing info. Everyone should be including stamps with their samples to reduce costs for the distributor. Next month we can rotate the distributor to another member, or have one person act permanently. There are pros and cons to each. Organizing the information for a new distributor each month might be too much logistically at this point, but if one person will be doing it permanently then we need to cover all costs for our own samples. reply here if anyone wants to volunteer or chime in

I would be interested in being a distributor / coordinator for this it sounds like a really good idea that could evolve into something great however I'm worried about a few things off the top of my head. Nicotine levels is one of them and just general human error in mixing.

1 points

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

I think for simplicity's sake we will do no nic. Not worth the risk, and this is about flavors. People can add in nic after the fact if they'd like. what other concerns do you have? thanks for volunteering!

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 9 years ago

This. I mean we are all doing the same thing here. We all can add nic easily

Here is my suggestion:

  • Members of the club will be in groups of 6.

  • Each week a person from each group is chosen as the recipient.

  • The other 5 people in the group will send their samples directly to the weekly recepient.

  • The following 5 weeks, each person in each group will get a turn as the recipient.

  • This 6 weeks cycle can repeat with the groups being the same, and people just send different stuff, or you can randomize the groups, and continue.

The great thing is, you will ship 5 times, and when you are the recipient, you will receive 5 samples, so shipping cost will balance itself, and no one will owe anyone money. Only issue with this is .. Everyone will have everyone's address .. :)

1 points

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

I think that's a great idea, but am concerned about people feeling comfortable enough to share their address. That's why I wanted to get someone reputable in on this and potentially make them the permanent distributor, as long as people are sending in stamps and covering the costs. Your idea is just as good, but want to hear what other people think about having to share their address. Personally, I'm fine with either. Does anyone else want to leave some input on these two ideas? Like I said, I'm totally game for either I just don't want people to hesitate because they'll have to share their address with a group of people, instead of just one reputable Reddit user

I know I'd love to be a part of this, and I'm sure /u/mrcoltux would be too. Idk about being a distributor because I'm not terribly well known on this sub, but I wouldn't be opposed.

Thanks!

awesome, I'll put you guys down on my list. I'm gonna comment your usernames under the guidelines just to be able to reference it easier. After everyone's been participating for a few months I'm sure it would be fine to distribute if you're up for it. I was thinking we could have an end of the year contest for best recipe and other things of that nature as well, I'd be willing to throw a few bucks in for some gear that could be a prize. I'm also trying to find someone in the Midwest just so we can have the most balanced shipping times. thanks for participating!

I think it would just be a better idea to have like a private recipe depository that you have to contribute to to get access

I'd be willing to implement this in All The Flavors, if people wanted to describe how it would work.

That would be sick! Been using your app for the last few months I'm pretty happy with it.

that's awesome, thanks so much. maybe a login for members that leads to a members only area where the showcased recipes can be reviewed and shared? just a thought. so stoked that people are so enthusiastic about this idea

1 points

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

This is a different kind of concept, it's more about getting people to try different things they otherwise never would for little to no risk. I think a depository for club recipes could be a great idea though, only available for members who have contributed. Reviews and feedback should be considered mandatory or at least standard etiquette for members as well

by exclusivegirlabout 9 years agoOne of "The Damned"

have you used the reddit gift exchange before? you could use a similar setup for it where it's a monthly and everyone who wants to participate signs up then the trading is randomized where each person is sending to a different person and receiving from a different person.

1 points

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

I haven't but I'll check it out :) the only thing is I'd like it to be organized and not random, so everyone can focus their attention on the same sampled recipes which would encourage the most feedback I think

1 points

1 for 1. nice and simple. I like it, but for eliquid maybe monthly is too long .. weekly would work better.

1 points

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

it would be simpler, but if you're receiving a larger number of samples monthly would be fine. I don't want to overwhelm people with too many samples because we want focused feedback, and monthly allows people enough time to get their samples in. As long as you mail your samples in you're guaranteed to get at least that number of samples back, as long as the distributor is doing their job. I also want this to be a club where you get a number of samples per month, not just one. I think for the first month everyone should be including additional postage so the distributor isn't shouldering the cost for what's essentially an experiment at this point. We can discuss other solutions next month, but for the time being I think these are good. Achaleon has volunteered to do this for September and Im writing up a post for ground rules right now

Dropped you a pm about possibly becoming a distributor for the Eu, or perhaps even setting up an eu one as well with your assistance, as well as being half decent with databases and getting logistics set up :)

wow that's amazing. I just PM'd you- thanks for stepping forward :)

Think we might be including Canada but you'd have to supply your own shipping costs, check out r/mixersclub and drop u/thattswhatshesaid a pm

Sorry about going MIA for a few hours, was stuck in a meeting at work all evening. Tomorrow im going to set up a PO Box first thing in the morning. (Im in Wisconsin) It looks like you guys have already set a really good system with guidelines so I'll post the mailing info as soon as its available so we can get this underway!

I like this idea, its like a diy zample box

Putting it like that only makes me doubt the idea even more.

by achaleonabout 9 years ago

My motivation for helping with this is to help push the community to keep making better recipes and become better mixers. It sucks to mix on your own and having a 'friend' or a group of people to get feedback from is invaluable. Thats my goal. Id be pretty sad if mixers missed the opportunity to 'buddy up' and just treated this like a crappy diy zamplebox

1 points

by mlNikonabout 9 years ago

ok, ok, sorry for the crappy representation lol

1 points

by thattswhatshesaidabout 9 years ago

Exactly. That's the goal here- bettering the community and sharing. I don't understand all the saltiness about it, if it doesn't work then oh well at least we tried. This subreddit should encourage experimenting with different ideas, not shut people down for no reason at all

one recipe. So five bottles of 10 ML size of one recipe you'd really like people to try and give you feedback on. These rules apply to US members so I'll update that. I don't think we would be able to do an exchange with anyone outside the US, or I would need someone who knows to explain how customs would work, and if they'd need to provide additional postage

Wasnt this similar to the idea behind /r/cloudcollective? While its a great idea, it didn't really take off.

I'm not sure, I'll check it out but I think this is something worth giving a try. The community should be preparing for these regs coming down and I think this a great answer and work around if we can organize

I am just about finished making a subreddit for this. This post is too disorganized and I don't want to step on anyone's toes and keep posting on DIY Ejuice. I should have it ready for everyone by tonight, I just need to finish the members form.
