OK new mixers, this is your thread to ask any questions you want of the DIY eJuice community. All posts are allowed, but we still encourage you to use the sidebar and search features before asking any questions.
- Placing your first DIY order and want to make sure you have all you need?
- Not sure about how to mix your first bottle?
- Want to get started but aren't sure how?
- Any other questions? ... then this is the thread for you. FWIW, the answers to the first three questions will eventually be found in the wiki (still in development); link at the top of the page.
Ask away!
I also wanted to say that it's amazing to me how steeping affects the flavors, and in ways that I initially didn't expect. So far I've tended to stick to s&v recipes because I want something that I like now rather than a week from now. I expect this will change as I actually understand what I like more.
I did 3 batches of a basic strawberry/pineapple using 5.5% of a different strawberry (ripe vs sweet vs standard) and 2.5% of tfa pineapple and loved the shake and vape flavor. It was a little on the strong side but I could see differences between them and see how the strawberries were different. After 2 days though it dramatically changed for the worse and the nuances of the different batches was lost. All that was left was a giant pineapple cock that proceeded to have its way with me.
After listening to some of the beginner blending episodes I now understand that 2.5% pineapple is way too much flavor, but it was cool to understand why in a disgusting and firsthand kind of way. It was also eye opening to see that something I initially was ok with could easily turn disgusting with a little bit of time in the same way that the opposite is true.
I feel like little lessons like this are all building towards a better understanding of what the fuck I'm doing, but in the meantime there's plenty of good shake and vapes out there to experiment with.
Alright, figured I'd pipe up and let y'all know what I'm up to. I'm completely new to vaping. My best friends been vaping for months to try to kick his cigarette habit. I've never been a habitual cigarette smoker, but I have been known to be a social smoker, and I smoke herb as well, so the physical habit of smoking is fun. I'd chief off of my buddies vaporizer all the time and enjoyed it, with the exception of the nicotine buzz I'd get afterwards. I've had "wax vape pens" for concentrates in the past, and recently got a 510 threaded best of a head to slap on my buddies mod and try out. The head kicked ass soo much that I decided to buy my own mod for it, a Wismec RX75. Since I had the mod and tank, I figured I'd give some ejuice a go and enjoy puffing on it. I've tried a few of his juices, and one that I really enjoyed was Pinup Vapors Betty. When I got my mod, I went to buy some, but quickly realized just how dang expensive that stuff is!! Also, my 4th Google search result was for a recipe for a Betty clone. Turns out, I could make about 6 30ml bottles of the stuff for about $35-40 worth of materials. Sounds fun! My buddy was interested too. He'd love to save some money as well. Figured, why not!
I placed a $30 order on ecigexpress.com of the following:
Forest Mix by FlavourArt – 30ml.
100mg unflavored nicotine, VG base – 30ml.
VG USP – 250ml.
PG USP – 120ml.
Sweetener (Sucralose) – 30ml.
I forgot 30ml bottles and 3ml pipettes, so I grabbed those off of Amazon Prime.
I have a scale that measures to .00 grams, so I mixed all by weight according to the recipe I listed above. I grabbed the nicotine as well so I could make a few bottles for my buddy. I don't even recall reading any guides on how to make this stuff, I just went to mixing. A few things I think I have learned for next time:
-
Shake all ingredient bottles before mixing. I totally didn't do this, and I've made two bottles (1 for my buddy with nic, one for myself without).
-
Experiment with steeping. Not even sure what the proper definition for this is, as I've seen some people saying placing the bottle in a dark cool environment is steeping. I've also read that placing the bottle in warm/hot water for a period of time is steeping. I'm not quite sure. I know the second bottle I made, I shook/rolled the bottle about, then checked the contents and it didn't seem mixed well, so I ran the bottle under hot tap water for a minute or two to warm it up and mixed it up then. That's about the extent of my "steeping."
-
As for the taste, I don't think it's spot on. It's also very very very very sweet. More so than Betty is supposed to be. The 2nd/non nic. bottle I did was the one I "steeped", and I also only put 4 grams of sweetener instead of 4.5. Still is too sweet. But I don't have any original Betty to directly compare it to.
-
Store all ingredient bottles in a cool, dark environment.
-
Wear gloves when mixing. The skull and crossbones on the nicotine bottles scared me into it. Plus, the last thing I'd want is to suffer through a nicotine overdose when I don't even use the stuff.
Any other tips or tricks y'all have for me, I'd love to hear. I'll continue reading and educating myself on this subject as best as I can. My next plan is to try to do a coffee e-juice. I enjoyed the coffee flavored ones my buddy smokes, so I'd like to get a 2nd tank full of coffee to enjoy during the mornings with my coffee. I'd like to get some more flavors and experiment, but I think I want to get smaller (15ml) bottles to experiment with, and also an RDA style head so that I can switch quickly from one flavor to the next without having to fill an entire tank.
That recipe you found is absolute shit, as are most recipes on that site you linked. 15% sucralose is, in all honesty, and ungodly amount of sweetener. Drop the forest fruit to 4% and the sweetener to 2%. You will get a stronger flavor from this, as well as a more suitable sweetness.
Steeping is essentially any process that leads to the juice becoming homogeneous. Dark, cool place and time is the best method for those that are patient, as it preserves the most flavor and intricacies of an ejuice. "Heat-steeping" is viable if you plan on vaping the entire bottle in a couple days max.
Mix what I said above for a more accurate taste. No one that knows anything about this art would ever make a recipe with 10% of any FA flavor, and anyone with half a brain wouldn't release a recipe with 15% sweetener. You found a lemon, but if you follow my advice, you can save it. If you want to, fill another 30mL with 10mL of your finished juice, and 19.5mL VG with around .5mL FA forrest fruit. This will bring you to around the recipe I posted above without wasting any of the juice you've already made.
If you've spent any time vaping the recipe you posted, change your coils and cotton. That much sweetener has caramelized on your coils, and will result in a burnt, bitter taste.
For a coffee, buy FA Dark Bean and TFA Bavarian Cream. Mix it 1% and 5%, and you'll have an easy coffee.
Sort by top posts of the past year on this subreddit, and you'll see a lot of great recipes, take a look at them and see if you want to try some.
Thank you for using the New Mixers Thread, not a lot of newbies have the patience or cognizance to realize there is a place for their simple questions.
Thanks for the heads up. Once my tank is out, I'll refill it with some local store bought PMS (pineapple/mango/strawberry) I nabbed when I nabbed the mod until I get this recipe sorted. (Strange thing about that juice was it was turning red/orange color as the tank went down...) I'm about through the 2nd tank of the stuff I mixed up, and I do feel like the flavor and sweetness if falling off, probably absolutely destroying my coil. I've got a spare that came with it, and then I ordered a 5 pack over the weekend. Thanks for the recommendation on the coffee recipe, I'll give it a go!
Just got my new flavors in. Was going to mix your coffee recipe. It's 1% dark bean and 5% bavarian cream?
I just looked at that recipe you found. 10% Forest Fruit, 15% Sweetener. WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? Again I've never tried Betty but that sounds absolutely ridiculous, I would like to think the person who is posted that is trolling. Until you get a chance to order more flavors, try 4% Forest Fruit, 1% Sweetener.
Yeahhhhhh, one star the fuck out of that recipe.
It's like the twilight zone in the comments.
It sounds like you're off to a great start!
Do shake all ingredients next time. Nicotine base and concentrates will separate in their bottles and need to be remixed.
Shake the hell out of it your juice until your arm hurts, try it, and then leave it in a cool dark place, for a day, three days, a week, two weeks, testing it out periodically, shaking it again, trying it and noting changes in the flavor. Ignore that hot water stuff.
I don't know Betty but there are many crappy clone recipes on ELR, you might have better luck with this one from this month's monthly thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/4vnbju/august_2016_recipe_thread/d664owc
I've never made a coffee vape for myself and didn't like any of the commercial ones I tried in the past, but people seem to enjoy FA Tiramisu as a coffee flavor.
Me using that recipe was certainly the result of little to no research. I'll certainly try the recipe out you linked by /u/Rust2Crusty. I'm planning on placing another order here shortly, once I find a recipe I'll try for a coffee flavor. I've seen a few recipes listed like this (by percentage), and that differs soo much from the way ELR displays the ratios (by weight in grams, pre-set to a 30ml bottle), so I'll have to figure out one of these calculators on the sidebar. Also, the 15ml bottles will get ordered as well so I can experiment more.
I noticed it appears he used no sweetener in his recipe. Do the flavors tend to be sweet by themselves? Or do you need to add sweetener to get that taste? Or are the marshmallow/sweet mango flavors used as the sweeteners?
The flavors do tend to be be sweet by themselves. I'd suggest mixing a small bottle of that recipe without sweetener first, then if you think it needs some, make the next batch with a little sweetener, starting with something like 1% and then, if more is needed, gradually increasing by 1% at a time in subsequent batches until it gets right were you want it. AllTheFlavors is the best site but now that it includes mixing by weight, .1ml is a good free one for beginners.
Those of you that mix more than 120ml of your ADV or any juice- what bottles do you use?
I'm using leftover bottles that I've collected over the years for 30ml's, and I bought a bunch of the bombies style from /u/redbic awhile ago (thanks again pal!) for 60ml and 120 ml
But there's a few recipes everybody in my household is vaping so I'd like to make a bigger batch of it at a time. I guess 500ml. Do you guys use a bombies style vape bottle or just like an empty water bottle or just mix into a few different 120mls?
Since you're mixing so large, I assume you're not taking it out and about with you. If so then I see no drawbacks with something like this.
If you want larger than 8oz, these go up to 12oz BUT they don't list what they're made of. The first one was LDPE so they'd forr sure be fine. I can't seem to find anything about the material these are made of, though I'd assume LDPE.
If you think your mix may be in the bottle a while I'd recommend glass. You can get 1L glass boston rounds on Amazon, 12 for ~$54 here.
Taking /u/VaporAlchemist 's advice here i am! I have tried two different sites where you get to put in your flavors and get recipes you can do with them, one provided me with NONE and the other with just a bunch of Vanilla Custard + (fruit). These are the flavors i own, could anybody whip up something good? I would VERY much prefer at least one shake and vape recipe, don't mind if there's steep ones too, i'm just running out of juice and need something kinda asap :P
- (TPA) Blueberry (wild)
- (TPA) Caramel Candy
- (TPA) English Toffee
- (TPA) French Vanilla
- (CAP) Greek Yogurt
- (FW) Mango
- (CAP) Sweet Strawberry
- (CAP) Vanilla Custard V2
Many thanks!
Hey /u/Antinaxtos, friends seem to enjoy my Mega Man Yogurt http://tjek.nu/r/5CaQ .. Although you don't have all the flavors necessary, but you do have a few flavors that can give you a similar main profile. Try This:
Antinaxtos Berry Yogurt|% :--|:-- (TPA) Blueberry (wild)|5 (CAP) Sweet Strawberry|2 (CAP) Greek Yogurt|6 (TPA) French Vanilla|1.5
Shake and Vape. Let me know how it turns out for you.
Have you used FW Blueberry? I prefer it but I may try this recipe verbatim. I also normally use a blueberry base, I will try and report results/share the recipe
Here are the other possibilites:
Antinaxtos Caramel King Custard|%
:--|:--
(TPA) Caramel Candy|3.5
(CAP) Vanilla Custard V2|6
(TPA) French Vanilla|1.5
Antinaxtos Straw Custard|%
:--|:--
(CAP) Sweet Strawberry|4
(CAP) Vanilla Custard V2|6
(TPA) French Vanilla|1.5
Enjoy! Keep mixing
Just s note for /u/antinaxtos anything with cap vanilla custard v2 will take some time to steep, don't give up on it if it tastes weird at first.
Hoping this doesn't get ignored but started off DIY'ing with some simple Vampire vape concentrates at 10% this week and they turned out OK..
Just wondering for future mixes with more complex recipes with flavour concentrates coming up to say 14-18% would they still be OK to mix at an 80/20 ratio or should I mix more towards 70/30 for better flavour?
So recently I got a DIY Starter Kit from Liquid Barn. Got it with 48mg PG based nic. I am mixing down to 3mg with 10% on the flavorings (pg based), and either 70vg/30pg or 80/20. Every flavor I've tried gives me harsh hits. Not peppery (at least I don't think?) but it's making me choke. Usually for like the first 10 hits or so, then it might settle down, it might not. The first liquid I tried was 70/30 so I thought maybe increasing it to 80/20 might work but it didn't.
I've kept the nic refrigerated as well. I haven't tried doing just a straight nic juice but since the same problem seems to be occurring with all the flavors, I am suspecting the nic. I would be willing to try nic from somewhere else if I knew I had a better chance of not getting something harsh... any ideas?
Lower the flavor? It's possible it's getting you choked up. What nicotine did you buy? I know one of the nicotine brands is much lower quality than the other.
I suppose that could be true, I could go down to 5% on the flavor. The nic I ordered was also from Liquid Barn as an optional add on to the kit. It is a 125ml bottle, 48mg/ml, PG based.
New to diy -- before I go ordering a bunch of flavors, I'm just curious what your experiences are with regards to shelf life of flavor concentrates?
Are these flavorings typically pretty stable for months vs years?
Just making sure I'm not about to fall into the trap of buying a wide variety of flavors, and having them rendered useless as many I will likely not touch all that often.
I'd say years. I have a few bottles of flavoring from my first order that I'll still dip into every now and again, and I can't see a difference in flavor.(Except for creams, some cream concentrates actually improve over time, as some of the BA breaks down.)
Like skidz said, years. Some of the custards and others may darken over time (e.g. TFA Bavarian Cream) but surprisingly it doesn't seem to affect the flavor too much. I've only had a few bottles which I've tossed out for looking too funky.
Thanks for the responses, folks.
I also did a little more research and found this gem on the TFA website providing their thoughts on flavors and shelf life -- sharing here in case the information is helpful to anyone else on the nature of flavor change over time: https://shop.perfumersapprentice.com/flavorsworkshop/shelf_life.pdf
Has anyone ordered the 140 x 15ml sample box from TFA? I'm stocking up on flavors & it looks like a heck of a better deal than the 144 x 4ml.. ($.085/ml vs $.24/ml) Or is this thing just overkill?
Is it possible to make non vapor firming fit ejuice, like the Jacvapor clear steam eliquids?
Ordered my first batch of flavors for diy and forgot honeydew.
Will switching out honeydew with cantaloupe ruin a flavor or is will it still be close?
It will be different. Might be better, might be worse, might as well go ahead and give it a try until your next flavor order.
That's about what I figured. From what I've gathered on this sub it's a bunch of experimenting and occasionally wasting materials. Haha
Did I miss something or was there not a Beginner Blending episode last night?
Hi all, I was hoping you guys could help me with an issue I'm having.
Until recently, I bought a peach flavor from a local vape shop and had them add cream to it. However with the new FDA regulations, they told me that they weren't allowed to add-in flavors anymore, and now I've lost my favorite liquid.
If I bought a cream liquid, would it be possible for me to add it to the bottle of peach juice and make my own peaches n cream flavor? Do you all have any suggestions as to which cream flavor I should buy?
I've never DIY before, so I'm sorry if this is a silly question. But I miss my flavor and I'd really appreciate a little guidance in creating my own. Thanks :)
Hmm. Due to the sheer number of different creams available, it is def worth a shot just asking your shop which one, and at what %. Otherwise there will be A LOT of trial and error to get there.
But essentially if I were to use trial and error, I'd just add a few drops of cream to my bottle, shake well and drip until I got what I was looking for? I can always ask them, but since the FDA started regulating they haven't been allowed to answer a lot of questions they normally would have.
I accidently left my cap off my 1quart of VG overnight! From what I've read, VG can absorb the moisture in the air. Should I get some new VG, or is one night with the cap off okay?
Hi guys, I'm pretty new to this DIY eJuice stuff, so bear with me.
I've ordered a few KHRoberts, Scentium, TFA and Cap's Flavoring with liters of VG and grams of menthol crystal, steeped a few flavorings and now came to conclusion.
Whenever I vape with this liquid, all I get at first is 100% clouds, no flavor at all since it is a max VG liquid. But then after releasing the clouds I started to get the "after-taste" which is really great, but taste awkward. Imagine eating a bitter mango. There's the smell but it's bitter.
Most of the liquids that I bought have a composition list and therefore it is written there "Artificial Sweeteners". My local chemical vendors are confused too since there are 2 most bought "Artificial Sweeteners" which is the Sucralose and Sorbitol. AFAIK, Sorbitol often used in candy, and Sucralose often used in Milk Powder or some kind of powder drinks. Notify me if I'm wrong. But still I don't know which one to use for vaping. If anyone ever used Artificial Sweeteners please share here. Or if anyone has better options, please.
We don't use sorbitol. You can use sucralose, erythritol, and monk fruit extract(? I believe?) as true sweeteners. You can use ethyl maltol as a sweetness "enhancer". Other sweeteners could be dangerous, as burning sugars are know to produce carcinogens.
I would try any other avenue before adding sweetener. It can become a crutch, and you'll never get to enjoy a full flavor profile if you rely on sweetener. If you don't mind, what recipe are you mixing?
Hi and thanks for replying. The local chemical shop also has ethyl maltol and acetyl pyrazine. And no, I'm moving to vape because I'm throwing away all those sick stuff, therefore I'll follow what you said to not add a sugar. Any links to related post about burning sugars study? What kind of detour would you suggest? I'm currently trying to mix the TFA's Mango, but more to the ripe ones with sweet sensations. Koolada and menthol crystal included. And any reason to not use the sorbitol? I'm pretty sure, the sorbitol are cheaper than the sucralose.
I'm not sure why not to use sorbitol, but I know it's not sold for vaping purposes as a sweetener. As for the sugar burning, you can check deeper_diy for some articles, or just search "sugar carcinogen" in this sub.
TFA and Cap are known brands we all use for flavoring. I am not familiar with the other two. Are those others something someone has recommended?
Hi and thanks for replying. The local chemical shop owner shows up with a "cheap" variation of flavorings, rated at half the price of TFA here. KHRoberts are Malay's flavoring while Scentium are Spain's. Later on I found out that it is far way weaker than the TFA since it has been mixed with PG. As I mostly mix TFA's Apple for my buddy, I'd like to find a cheaper way to mix the liquid. But meh. Used around 40% in the mix to get the flavors out.
I really want to start diy now while I have a lot of juice while I go through inevitable mess ups and have juice to fall back on.
I was told the best way to pick which flavors to start with is to find a few juices I like and get clones. But how can I tell the recipes I find are like...good? I'd be just as okay picking a few juices that have flavor profiles I like and are well rated recipes, but I'm just trying to figure out which sources are legit so I can order for those two-three recipes.
A lot of the recipes at alltheflavors.com have reviews there, and some have been posted and talked about here as well. Search those out to see what kinda feedback has been given.
You are doing well in searching for recipes with POSITIVE feedback, as there are some real turds floating around too. The reason I mentioned that site is although it is newer, the modest subscription fee results in some better recipes.
I just looked up the recipes from a few of the better known names from this subreddit on alltheflavors and picked a few that looked good to me. Vurve/skiddles/etc. There's no way to know if it's going to be ok or not before you try it but I figure that this way, even if I don't like it, it's at least going to be of decent quality.
You can't. Most clones aren't very close to their source material. Just find high upvoted recipes here and on alltheflavors.com and purchase the flavors for those if they sound like something you would enjoy. You can also look at e-liquidrecipes.com, but the quality of the average recipe there is very low, with a few great ones and thousands of absolute garbage.
Got it. All the flavors looks awesome, it just seems hard to filter by what flavor profile I want, and sorting by specific flavors seems..daunting if you don't know, haha. I'll keep looking though, and find 2-3 flavors, though!
> look at e-liquidrecipes.com, but the wualoty of the average recipe there is very low,
really? Hmm ..
Quite the generalization..
e-liquid-recipes.com has been around for a long time, and has more history or people mixing, testing, and reviewing flavorings and recipes. It also has a great forum and a chat where you can go to ask questions and get help. It is a public contribution website, it is a 100% free, ad-supported, and the best recipes get voted up by the community. I enjoy using it, and I highly recommend it.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! And one of my essential recipes before I'll do DIY is a donut flavor, which I see you have a very well reviewed recipe of :). I'll have to poke around! Maybe find a donut with cream and a few more flavors :)
Don't mix that one yet. It's good, but I'm updating that recipe in the next 3 days. I have a better one that will be up soon. I'm just working on the youtube video for it. After 22 versions, I've nailed it. Freshly fried krispy kreme glazed donut. Stay tuned.
I don't know what to say or ask but I just want to know if im alone. All premade juices are good and all of my friends make good liquid too, but I try diy and I only get a perfume taste. I've tried cap, tpa, fa, fw, ska etc. and even when I open a concentrate bottle all I smell is perfume. I can't think of anything im doing wrong since I do everything like my friends and yet their juices taste like something (heavenly). It's not vapers tongue and my mixing should be fine so why can't I taste anything else than perfume in my liquids? I've vaped pure nic base because I feel like im throwing away money and letting my juices steep meanwhile just make them taste like perfume and paper (even more so than just after mixing) so am I alone with this problem? Is there anyone who has solved a problem like this? And what could be the reason for the perfume taste? (tried multiple usp grade bases and nic bases, I know my precentages are spot on because my friend gets great results with them and I've tried variations too) Currently mixing 70vg 3% tpa watermelon and bases are by lubrisolve. This smells and tastes like perfume with a hint of sour lemon and im getting a very papery aftertaste.
Do you get the same perfume taste if you do it without any flavors? What about if you leave out the nic? Trying those two things could help you narrow it down if it's something in your base maybe.
Tried both and the perfume goes away when removimg flavor, but variation (or leaving out) nic only makes a difference at very high mg (over 20 and I use 3). But I hope that someone would bring out something like this and something that I haven't thought of yet. It is likely that I wont find a solution myself after I've battled with this problem for half a year now :/
Do you steep your juice enough? I find that perfumey taste to go away after some time, some take lots of time. If you do that then maybe try some other base, I would even change bottles. 3% is too low a percentage to get perfume, something seems fishy try to think out if the box. Change things you haven't ever changed.
I hate to break it you, flavorings are perfumes, and flavor is detected mostly through the nose. Without the perfumey compounds, all you will get is mouthfeel and tongue aftertaste. A simple one or two fruit flavor mix will always taste chemical or perfumey to someone who is expecting a natural fruit flavor (unless you use pure fruit extracts from Medicine Flower).
I struggled with the switch to vaping in general, because I smoked shisha flavors which are flavored with actual fruits, molasses, or concentrated fruit juice. E-liquids, to me, tasted like laboratory experiments. My recommendation to you, try more complex recipes, or perhaps venture into some creams and bakeries to mix with your fruits. When layered properly in a mix, the correct % of a fruit flavoring can taste pretty authentic.
For example: Pineapple (TFA) is a terrible obnoxiously sharp chemical-tasting artificial pineapple flavor on it's own. Mango (TFA) has similar properties. However, in this mix 12Monkeys - Mangabeys, after one week of steeping, it tastes like a great tropical fruit mix. I hope that helps.
hello DIY, I have mixed a few 30ml bottles together and letting 'em steep for a few days. I took a sweet rasp/vanilla swirl mix i made to taste. I didn't use any recipes (maybe I should) so I guessed on how much % of each flavoring to use. The taste is more subtle than expected: 6%sweet Rasp/4% vanilla swirl. I make max VG so I did take that into consideration about the flavor being more subtle.
My question is there any recommended amounts of flavorings to be used (not for specific recipe) just as a simple mix? I figured a good total flavor % would be no more than 10% of the mix. Most flavors are TFA, also since they are max VG would I need to bump each flavor 1 or 2% to increase the pg to bring more flavor through. or does it just add harshness to it.
thanks edit: is there a recipe website that I would be able to list a flavor or 3 and would show recipes ppl have done?
alltheflavors.com and e-liquid-recipes.com
Example of searching for Raspberry Sweet on e-liquid-recipes.com. To do so for other flavors go to e-liquid-recipes.com, at the top click resources, then flavor list, then type in your flavor, look for the correct flavor and manufacturer and chose the one with the most recipes next to its name.
Example of searching for Raspberry Sweet on alltheflavors.com. Much easier here, just type in the name it should only bring up the correct flavor you just have to choose the correct manufacturer.
Something that should be mentioned is that max VG usually takes a little more time to develop full flavor. Has this steeped for a few days?
I've been using tfa coconut in mixes that don't necessarily need coconut as a top note but more of a creamy additive and the vendor I shop at no longer carries it but said coconut extra is the same just stronger. It is not I tell you, it is pretty chemically. So my question is what is a good coconut I can use that is close to tfa coconut? Thanks.
How much coconut were you using and how much coconut extra did you try to use in its place?
2% tfa coconut and 1% coconut extra
Take this with the understanding that I have never used TFA Coconut Extra, but have used TFA Coconut a lot. I've read repeatedly here that it really is the same thing, but that Extra is three to FOUR times as strong as regular coconut. I know TFA coconut is strong; I don't like using that one at more than 1% because anything higher tastes like suntan oil to me. 0.5% would be as high as I'd want to use it as more of a creamy additive. So if I were forced to use Extra instead, I'd start with 0.125% or less. Try 0.125 to, at the very most, 0.5%.
Hi hi. Has anyone come close to making blue honey from strix elixirs/vapedudes? I've come close with the blueberry taste and slight sweetness but can't get the honey right. Using tfa honey btw. Thanks al
Drop the honey down to .1%(make a 10% dilution of the flavor, use that at 1%). Also, odds are good that Strix uses FW flavors. I've tried a couple of their juices, and most of them were FW rebottles.
Wow so I'm just using way to much honey flavour. I thought 5% wasn't enough.
It's funny how too much or too little start tasting similar.
I'll give that a try.
Also thanks for the heads up about fw
I am having a terrible time with cheesecakes. I am so dissapointed. I first got tfa cheesecake and it was absolute garbage, had I done a little research first I could have avoided that mistake but oh well, live and learn. My next couple cheesecakes have been a mixture of cap ny cheesecake 6% and tfa cheesecake graham crust 2% and they kind of taste like vomit to me with no cream cheese taste. I got this combo from a couple highly rated recipes so I thought it would be good. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better cheesecake flavor out there? I would love some assistance, thank you.
You may be sensitive to Butyric Acid. It's the "cheese" taste in cheesecake, but in high percentages(or to sensitive folks) it is the scent and taste of vomit. I'd suggest using more "fluff" based creams to achieve your cheesecake. You can try a mix of TFA sweet cream and CAP NY cheesecake, thinking 2%/3% respective, with some FA fresh cream to boost the profile.
Thank you for being a polite user on reddit!

Anyone have experience ordering nic from heartland vapes?
I do all the time for the shop I work at. I've never had any bad nicotine from them, and they have a pretty bad ass facility in Oklahoma that the owners got to take a tour of! They have pretty good deals for bulk ordering and its quality nic!
Great. Thanks for the reply!
I got several orders of good nic from them before getting one that smelled like the bathroom at a baseball stadium. They probably would have replaced it because they have excellent customer service, but I went looking for a better source instead because I want my nic to be right the first time every time.
Just got my first order of flavors and I'm looking for a shake and vape to mix up asap. Here are the flavours I currently have, feel free to recommend flavors to add to my collection.
- Strawberry ripe TFA
- Blueberry wild TFA
- French toast CAP
- Harvest Berry CAP
- Graham Cracker v2 CAP
- Sweet Cream CAP
- Sweet Strawberry RF CAP
- Vanila Custard v2 CAP
- Bavarian Cream CAP
- Vanila Whipped Cream CAP
- Cinnamon danish swirl v2 CAP
- Cream Fresh FA
- Maple Syrup FA
Shake and vape almost all of them as standalones after reading this: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/4fdevi/modest_monday_reviewing_flavors/
I said "almost" because you might want to put that Vanilla Custard V2 way for a month or two before trying it; maybe the CDS V2 and Graham Cracker V2 as well, not sure about those.
Is this a necessary step? The liquids shipped from abroad about 2 weeks ago, from the bottles I can see that they are mostly repackaged into smaller bottles at their store, except for the FA bottles. So just 10ml batches of a couple of percent so I can identify the flavours.
I wouldn't call it "necessary" but if you do it now you'll thank yourself later. If you don't want to do it at a couple of different percents and really get a sense of the range of each of your flavors, at least do it a one good percent so you get a taste for them. And after you do that, you probably won't be asking for recipes, because you'll know which ones you want to mix together.
I'm going to be starting making my own liquid come payday next week. Carried out loads of research into the process, work in medicine so quite happy with the safety aspects when mixing etc. Think the only real challenge is getting the mix(es) right, which I'm looking forward to...
The only question I have left is about flavour base. I'm using the calculator at makemyvape.co.uk and it of course wants to know whether my flavour concentrates are VG or PG based. Some of the shops detail this, others not so much. I presume the base will be listed on the bottle when they arrive... but skipping to the question... are flavour bases usually PG or VG?
Hi
First post on here so be gentle...
Been mixing a while but essentially just been mixing well known recipes by well known people, like Rhodonite, Bronuts etc etc and now want to expand my horizons a little.
I have a pretty good collection of concentrates already from most of the major brands. I collect flavours based on the flavour notes posted and after watching lots of vids on DIYorDIE and listening to lots of podcasts by /u/Vurve, Cokecan and /u/skiddlzninja. So I've done a shit ton of homework.
My question is this... my next step is to take those fantastic recipes and tweak them to my own specific preference. Like Rhodonite as an example. Great recipe that it is, to me, it needs more mouth feel, weight, volume, thickness, however you want to express it. I want the same flavour profile with a more "premium" feel to it.
I have tried adding the usual recommended concentrates for achieving this to Rhodonite and a number of other recipes, just to experiment, using creams, marshmallows, enhancers like MTS, Smooth etc but all with the same result.
Even adding small quantities like 1 or 2 %, I get a horrible mouth feel, like I am vaping Styrofoam. Just a dry, flavourless, kind of spongey texture that really ruins the otherwise great recipe.
I usually time steep any recipe for 2 weeks. Then again if I add anything to an already steeped mix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Has anyone ever had their vg gone bad? I'm not close to my vg bottle right now, but all my liquids have this weird sour taste to them. I have tried rebuilding my coils and changing cotton and am hoping that this is just some weird vapor's tongue effect, but was hoping someone might be able to answer this before I get back to my apartment on Sunday.
Without some recipes it would be hard to offer much input but I doubt your VG has gone bad. If anything goes bad it would be the nicotine
Have you tested your VG, PG, and nic on their own to help narrow down the culprit?
The only thing I've noticed in bad VG is a musty, stale shower scent/flavor when vaped.
No, but I'll try vg only and vg with nic on Sunday when I get back to my apartment. I noticed a minor spill from my vg in my backpack when I had first purchased it, despite it being unopened, hence my worrying that it might be spoiled. But I'll give it a try, and see if I have some old juice laying around to make sure this isn't related to olfactory fatigue.
I mixed up a batch of strawberries, cream, and vanilla gelato. I found it delicious but it soon gave me vapors tongue -
Cotton Candy (10% Ethyl Maltol) (TPA)5%
Strawberries and Cream (TPA)12%
Vanilla Bean Gelato (TPA) 5%
So I halved the recipe (exactly). So 2.5%, 6%, and 2.5%, respectively. It tasted weak at this point, but on the bright side, did not give me olfactory fatigue any longer. So currently I'm slogging through this halved mix (ended up with 60mL)
I just mixed up a 10 mL sample of the recipe, revised:
Ethyl 1.5%
Straw n Cream 9%
Vanilla Bean Gelato 3.5%
Do you see anything out of the ordinary here? I'm still slogging through the last 30mL of the weak recipe, but sampling the new recipe, it also seems weak. Think I'm just vaping too much strawberry recently? Or are those ratios... off?
It's not the strawberry. 5% EM is VERY high for a soft fruit vape. I'd suggest leaving it out, and lowering the strawberries and cream to somewhere around 8%. If this isn't sweet enough for you, pick up some sucralose(CAP Super Sweet) and use it at about .5%. Or you can force yourself to vape unsweetened juice, and never want to go back to the sweetened crap once you get used to unsweetened. A lot of us get nauseous after vaping "premium" juices due to the amount of sweetener they use.
Your last iteration looks better but I think your problem is too much cream though.
First of all, I'd drop the EM altogether, I find it really doesn't add much to any juice, and it can kill flavour and gunk your coils.
TFA Strawberries and Cream isn't an amazing flavour, but it's not bad either. If you haven't already, mix it at ~7% solo.
See how it is, if the balance is between cream and strawberry is OK but the flavour is too weak, increase the percentage, decrease it if it's too strong. This is your base flavour, so try and get the percentage for this dialled in first.
If it needs more strawberry try adding 1-2% of TFA Strawberry or TFA Strawberry Ripe.
If it needs more cream, add 1-2% TFA VBG.
I did originally try it at 10% (I think that's the top of the "max recommended" from the TFA Megathread on the sidebar).
It wasn't great. At all. Maybe less could have been better, but it was very "flat" tasting.
I'm about to mix it up with 2% Ripe added and see what that does. I haven't used the ripe as much as I have my strawberry, so finding a way to add ripe to recipes will help. It fell flat on its face in other iterations I've made already, however.
Thanks for your time man!
Replying again after mixing up with your suggestion of adding 2% Strawberry Ripe:
It's definitely better. Sadly, I'm unable to "create" goodness like others do. Maybe I don't have the refined palate. I mixed up Strawberries and milk (https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/4vkvui/strawberry_milks_a_recipe_born_out_of_nostalgia/)
And honestly, even without the Vanilla Custard and Hazelnut (I don't have them) it's miles above what I am mixing up. I had an eye-opening moment on my first hit of it, shake and vaped. Supposedly it gets better with time as well.
Thank you again for your time!
Refining your palate is something that comes with time and experience, don't worry about it too much if you're new to mixing. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is every time you eat, drink or vape something be conscious and think about the flavours and aromas present. Do it with everything from a gourmet meal to a cheap and nasty soda.
EJuice recipe creation is a lot harder than people think. Like a lot of things, it's easy to make something that's acceptable, but very hard to make something amazing.
Back to your recipe - you could try some CAP Sweet Strawberry in it instead of TFA Strawberry Ripe, CAP's is a little sharper/tarter whereas Strawberry Ripe is a bit sweeter and rounder.
But I think you'll struggle a bit using the TFA Strawberries and Cream as a base though, because you'll always be working around the cream and strawberry in that concentrate. And if by itself it's not already 90% of what you want adding more stuff to it will never make it what you want it to be.
Welp, I just tried the "weak" juice that I've had in my subtank... literally tastes like VG. So, pretty sure it's just olfactory fatigue from vaping strawberry all day. I'm gonna lay off it for a day or two and revisit
So I tried to look into recipes I would like and got super overwhelmed + my ADHD was like stop it.
So I went to Wizardlabs and set up a cart based on what I thought would mix well and what I would like, anything for a beginner you guys would add?
I like Max VG, but have heard VG nicotine extract is a bitch to work with, I vape 3mg, would 60mg/PG be to harsh. I tend to stick to 80VG when I buy premade.
There's plenty there for you to play around with. Sign up on E-liquid-recipes.com and/or alltheflavours.com and go to the Flavour Stash. Input all of the flavours (Can be labourious) and then you can search for recipes that have your flavours.
It's advised to make a small test batch of the flavours so that you have a clear idea of how they all perform in a vape.
Thanks, tried to find the Flavour Stash, can't seem to, it's on alltheflavours? Just signed up.
My mistake, apologies. On alltheflavours you can just click "Flavours" at the top, then search the ones you have. Click the little > on the side, then check "In Inventory." and click "Update."
There's probably an easier way, but I'm relatively new to that one as well.
Are you mixing by weight or volume? If it's by weight I would probably not go to wizard labs for those flavors because of the bottles they come in.
As for the nic, if you like 80VG then I would probably get at least 50/50 nic, and I never see a reason to not get 100mg/ml. With 60mg pg nic you might have a hard time getting 80 VG.
For the flavors themselves, do you have some recipes you already want to try? I don't see any strawberry, you might want that. I'd double check "first time order" flavors post from the sidebar if you haven't already, or have recipes you already want to try.
Also, I always think it's a good idea to get some PG, unless you're okay with the VG/PG ratio depending on the flavor % used.
Volume, I am gonna start small, 30ml bottles probably, maybe some 15ml bottles.
100mg/ml kinda scared me a tad, am I being silly?
Nope, tried looking at a bunch, got overwhelmed, was sorta gonna wing it, probably sounds dumb, but I was gonna do simple stuff at first(Like a couple fruits, a touch of sweet cream).
I am one of those weirdos that never really liked a strawberry I tried.
I use RDA's, If I would do 100VG I probably would, hate throat hit and tanks for the most part.
If you tend to like most juices you try then that might work out. Usually there's 2 kinds of beginner mixers, those who think everything is amazing, and those who can't get anything to taste good. The advice to the latter is always the same- find some popular recipes and follow them exactly. I think it's good to have some simple recipes to fall back on just in case.
> 100mg/ml kinda scared me a tad, am I being silly?
Not silly because this sub hypes safety a lot. I got gloves and 60mg nic for my first order but I won't ever use them again. I was a little bit scared of 100mg at first until I had a pretty clumsy accident where it got all over my arm and leg. I wasn't wearing gloves but they wouldn't have helped. I freaked out but just went to wash it off and was fine. Since then I don't mind dropping some 100mg on my tongue to give it a taste. I really don't think there's much danger for a competent adult, especially if it's a bit thicker like 50/50.
As for the PG/VG question - it depends on how you vape. What's your usual %/mg for vaping?
I use 3mg juice
Been doing this almond milk. Here's the recipe:
TFA Bavarian cream 2.5%
CAP marshmallow 1.0%
CAP Toasted Almond 0.66%
CAP vanilla custard v1 2.0%
TFA milk 1.25%
I have FA Meringue coming in on Friday, would that help this be milkier? If so would you recommend substitution or using it in addition to what I have going on?
Also I don't own any other almond flavors. This one is good and shows up nicely among the creamy flavors. Is FA almond the best for a real/non toasted almond?
Thanks for your time. This is probably my 8th flavor attempt and i like it so far.
This is petty damn good.
Tfa Vanilla Swirl and Fa fresh cream belong in everyone's stash. And yes, FA Almond too. There was a review of it in the last couple days.
Was going to post this in another thread but thought it would maybe spark more random discussion here and it turned out kind of long.
I'm up to 96 flavors in my second week after deciding to DIY (coincides with my third week of vaping and second week of not smoking or wanting to smoke cigarettes).
95% of them are 10-13ml and I've made a bunch of really awesome mixes from other recipes so far (damn it's hard to accurately measure miniscule percentages hen making 10ml batches without feeling like I need to be diluting some of my flavors). I'm a bit daunted at the prospect of flavor testing all of them and am feeling a bit lost at understanding how to objectively describe what I'm tasting.
I just keep reminding myself that I'm not on a timetable and that it's kind of cool that I've found a few recipes that I really like while I explore this new world. I have all the time in the world.
Rhodonite, Breakfast at teleos clone, the shurb clone, and a razzmatazz were some of my favorites (duh, you don't say that some of the most highly rated juices are good).
I feel your pain. I'm at more than 100 flavors and haven't been doing single flavor tests and know I should. This best way to start is just one at a time. A journey starts with a single step my friend. Good luck on your diy journey and welcome to this awesome obsession...er hobby.
Mixing by weight makes miniscule amounts of flavoring a snap to measure!
So I am mixing by weight, and I still had a hard time with it.
For instance I was makin 10ml of rhodonite.
Trying to measure the torrone at .03g or the 7 other flavors that range from .1g to .2g was just really tricky. Sometimes 3 drops put me anywhere between .7 and .12 grams and while I was in the ballpark with most, every one was off by some small amount.
What advice would you give to make it easier? Am I just making too little of a batch? I bought a shit ton of 10ml bottles becuase I wanted to experiment and figure out what I like/don't.
I have this scale and while it works, the fact that it takes a second or two to recalibrate after adding a miniscule amount of liquid just means that sometimes I overdrop without realizing it.
American Weigh Scales LB-501 Digital Kitchen Scale
|||| --:|:--|:-- Current|$25.76|Amazon (New) High|$41.83|Amazon (New) Low|$22.91|Amazon (New) |Average|$26.55|30 Day
I cant see your scale from work (sure), but as long as it measures to .00 thats good. If your scale only goes as low as .1 grams, thats a problem. On my AWS LB 501 a single drop usually weighs .02 grams. A drop or two one way or the other doesnt ever concern me. Just going slow, letting the scale catch up, eh what else can I do right?
Except for single flavor testing, most of my experiments are 30ml anyway, so that gives more room for error.
When you need to add small amounts to your 10mL bottles, put something on the scale other than your bottle so that it picks it up. You can put the dropper on there for instance. Once you put that object on the scale, don't tare. Instead, memorize what that weight is and then add your .03g in addition to whatever you put on the scale.
Hello I am brand new to DIY, and I'm doing max vg, my first batch came out to be 20%PG Flavors, it's all fruity ones.
Letting it steep for 2 days already, but when I vape it, it just taste too much of VG but not enough flavors to cover the VG taste, what am I doing wrong?
Probably too much flavoring. Post up your recipe(s) so we can take a closer look.
Below is the recipe, I did put in a few more drops of Koolada though, because I like the cooling taste.
- VG 80%
- Blueberry Extra (TPA) 4%
- Grape Juice (TPA) 4%
- Koolada 10% (TPA) 3%
- Watermelon (TPA) 9%
Thanks for your help.
I agree with edible about watermelon. Personally I would cut everything in half, and omit koolada at first. See how that tastes, then begin to add koolada back a little at a time. A little bit goes a long way.
I know you said not enough flavor, and the advice we are giving may seem backwards, but the golden rule in regarding using concentrated flavoring is "less is more". Try this and report back.
Welcome!
Okay so I'm ordering my first things to mix juice but I don't understand how the third dilutent works. Under water/ vodka is there a general percentage for this or what is it used for.
Thanks. As it happens that's exactly what I have done to my latest batch of Rhodonite that is currently 5 days in to a 2 week steep so will see what happens. No other alterations.
So what is it with creams and that styrofoam texture? Before I start creating my own recipes I plan on firstly creating my own base profiles. A cream base, a custard, a yoghurt a bakery etc etc and getting them down before I work on mid and top notes to build a recipe. It would really help to understand why creams are having this effect. Is it steep time? Is it % used? Are they really so fickle or am I abusing them somehow?
Thanks
Good Flavor RDA
I just picked up an Alliance V2 RDA mainly for doing single flavor testing (my daily is a RTA). My only issues with are the build deck is a little small and I think I would prefer a velocity style deck. My main build is a 28/36 duel fused clapton build.
So with all that in mind I guess my question is what flavor geared RDA would you recommend?
Ive been really enjoying my goon for testing. The simple airflow is very good.
How is it to build on with the clamps vs 4 post holes like on a velocity ? I had the Bellus rta which had 2 posts with one hole each. Was kinda a pain to get the coils evenly spaced away from the posts
Tsunami by geekvape is what I use for flavor testing. It has velocity style posts, and Kennedy style airflow.
That's one I was looking at. One other feature I'm looking for is a 510 drip tip adapter( which it has). Found I definitely like a 510 vs wide bore for flavor. I don't know if I like the bottom airflow just because of the inherent leaking issues. Does bottom airflow typically give better flavor?
Sorry still kind of new to rebuildables.
the bottom airflow dosent cause any issues with leaking as it has a rather deep juice well, and the airflow is tubes which go all the way up to the top of the juice well. Unless you overfill the juice well, or drip juice directly down the tubes, it should not leak much at all.
Hello, so I just bought a starter kit vape and accidentally bought a diu juice(I think) from flavor west. So I thought I could ask here how to use it, how do I make a juice out of this thing I bought? This is the one I bought.
If you aren't looking to get into this as a hobby, just buy some VG and mix that 15mL bottle with 135mL of VG.
If you want to save some money in the long run, and vape whatever you want, read the sidebar and read the posts here for a couple weeks.
So I can buy VG and mix it? Cool, thanks. I think it's worth a try at least!
That is a long answer to type, so instead here is some reading that should answer your question.
Welcome!
So, I'm making my first batch and want to mix 240 mL of juice to split up between some bottles. Can I use a food processor to sufficiently mix everything up and will running it through a hot wash in the dishwasher be enough to clean it? (The food processor needs to be foodsafe afterwards).
The nice thing about DIY is you can do whatever you want. So, yes, you can. Is it recommended? No, not really. Doing that can have less than stellar results with many flavors. Besides the potential to reduce flavoring, it is just unnecessary to go that far. A good shake and a bit of rest is all that your juice needs.
In addition to what the others said, I wouldn't try mixing 240ml of any juice you haven't tried and like. If you mix 240ml and find you don't like it, you just wasted a bunch of ingredients when you could mix up a smaller batch and not lose as much. I'd start with 15-30ml at most and work your way up from there. I have a mix that was awesome for 50ml but by the end of 236 I'm finding the flavor isn't near as good.
Good point. I was following a recipe for something I knew I would like, but did go ahead and just make a 30 mL to try it. It turned out well.
I was trying to mix a large amount at once to just pour into separate bottles for curing, but had to just make it all in the individual bottles with syringes.
I think I'm going to pick up something like this to mix large batches in the future.
Hi. I am a complete Noob to DIY but have spent the last few weeks reading up on it and am desperate to start.
I have decided to buy the mixing kit from vapour depot to begin with as it's cheap and I get all I need in it just to have a mess around with. Has anyone had any experience with it?
I understand it's better, cheaper and probably easier to buy everything separate ( in this kit you get a pre-made vg nicotine base) however this is how I want to try it first before I commit to it properly.
My maths isn't too good so bear with me here. If I was to get a 250ml bottle of vg nicotine base at 6mg nicotine. And wanted to make a 30 ml bottle of juice would these calculations be correct?
I'd need 24ml of pre-mixed base vg nicotine 1.2ml of flavouring (12% of a 10ml bottle pg based) And 4.8ml of pure pg
Which would give me a 30ml bottle of juice with a nic content of 5.24mg
Forgive me if I'm way off I'm just trying to figure it all out. I know there's calculators on here and online but can't find a good one that you can use a pre-mixed nic base on.
Thanks for any help and advice. Much appreciated.
So you're making a 30ml bottle with 12% flavor? 12% of 30ml is 3.6ml.
Also, with 24ml of 6mg/ml you have 24(6) = 144mg of nicotine. In 30ml that's 144/30 = 4.8mg/ml.
http://dot1ml.com/mixer will let you use 6mg as your nic source - just click the settings cog next to 'nicotine base' and input your strength (6mg) and PG/VG ratio.
Juice Calculator ('Recipe Calculator' in the side bar) will also let you input custom nic strengths and PG/VG ratios. Can't give a how to on that at the moment as I'm away from my PC.
So I have a HUGE problem with making my own juice! Recently I've been mixing a lot trying to get better at it and all that jazz. Now that I literally have endless amounts of e liquid to vape I have been vaping on my own for a long time now. I've noticed that the more I have been vaping my own liquid I've been getting this horrible "vapers throat" problem. For some reason my throat feels like it's closing up and it's a little bit harder to breath? Idk what I'm doing wrong. I'm thinking I'm possibly PG sensitive however whenever I vape BnM ejuice my throat is fine and that has PG in it? I know some of my flavorings have acetoin in them like Bavarian cream and sweet cream however e liquids from BnMs have that in them as well. I have no idea what is wrong or what I'm doing wrong in the mixing process. Any advice or tips would be awesome! Thanks!
I feel like I should know this by now, but can I keep my PG based nicotine solution in the freezer, and just pullout what I need without thawing it?
Ok so I realized that my scale sucks, cheap chinese scale that advertised that it can do 0.01g increments but in reality it barely does 0.1. So I am going to have to order off amazon and ship it internationally. I have the recommended lb 501 in my cart along with lots of different sized bottles. Also added a gallon of VG from froggys fog, and 1 quart of PG from essential depot (their VG in gallon size ships from them and not amazon, basically so I can save a bunch of money and have everything I need in one shipment). What else can I get of amazon that will help a new mixer?
I have a bunch of flavors and PG based nicotine coming in. I'm assuming I'll have enough PG and VG to hit the 70/65 VG mark before I need to restock considering that the nicotine and flavors are PG based.
new to diy, just put in my first order for base and flavourings. got a kit on the way from thebrokevaper and a few extra flavourings from diy-ejuice.ca.
I ended up adding some MTS Vape wizard to my cart from diy ejuice. after doing some reading I've noticed this additive is mainly used in tobacco mixes only. I plan on mixing mostly (all) fruit mixes, was it a waste getting the MTS? will it have any effect on fruit mixes (good or bad)?
TFA Orange Creamsicle
Just wondering if it's possible to make a solid Orange Creamsicle using these flavors:
Orange Mandarin TFA Sweet Cream TFA Bavarian Cream TFA Cheesecake (Graham Crust) TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream TFA Vanilla Custard TFA
What flavors would work best? What percentages?
Thank you!
