Potential Growth in Bottle
submitted about 9 years ago by Kerouac2600

Hello All. To start off with I have been mixing my own e-liquid for about seven months now. Over the past months I have found this group to be a wealth of knowledge and would just like to say thank you.

For the past seven months I have been mixing my e-liquid successfully without incident till today. Today while getting ready to switch flavors to a new bottle I made back on 7/31 I noticed a very fine blue thread several inches long in the bottle. I am not for certain it is any type of bacterial growth or not but won't be chancing it on this bottle. I should note that I always sanitize my bottles and droppers in boiling or near boiling water before mixing up a batch and this was also a virgin bottle. I found it unlikely that there might be a stray thread or something that was transferred from the lid or dropper to the bottle. None of the other bottles from the batch showed signs of any foreign growth or objects. My primary concern is regarding the possibility that my flavorings, PG, or VG are contaminated.

I will attempt to attach an image showing the anomaly. It is visible on the left side of the image.

I'd like to hear any thoughts or opinions regarding this. Also I apologize for any errors I made in posting this thread as it has been some time since I last posted to Reddit.

Looks like a hair to me. Any animals in the house? Even in a very clean and maintained home, animal hair gets everywhere.

We did have the kids and their black poodle staying with us and that is a possibility. I may just set this aside for a bit and keep an eye on it. You all may be right and it may just be a hair.

That's a hair for sure, it probably got stuck to the dropper when it was out of the bottle. PG and VG are not good growth mediums for anything at all.

A little hair in your juice is better than the intact bug heads that pop/crackle when smoking analog cigarettes.

You got that?! What the hell did you smoke?!

Common tobacco contains many things including beetles. If you ever smoked regular (analog) cigarettes, you might be familiar with the occasional 'pop.' These are usually bug heads/body parts exploding. Specifically the cigarette beetle. Lasioderma serricorne ---> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasioderma_serricorne I think Inawera has a tobacco beetle flavor right? ;)

Ugh... I've had little bugs get into my tank through the mouthpiece. I hate taking a pull and having burnt up, juice covered bug in my mouth.

Now that you mention it, I have had issues with those little gnats (fruit flies) being attracted to the juice when I have the windows open. I bought tiny corks to keep them out. http://i.imgur.com/ZJfP9Kb.jpg

Where did you find those?

The little caps that come on the Uwell Crown coils fit their tips perfectly. That's what I use.

Lol not to be an ass but you made this long post about growths in your juice when all you had to do was move the dropper around and could see a hair got inside the bottle.

I tend to mix flavours that require several months of stepping. I do leave nicotine out of the mix and just add it once the liquid is properly stepped after weeks or even months. What I do is that I add approx 10 percent of vodka to my VG bottle hoping that the alcohol will keep the liquid bacteria free while my liquid is stepping without nic. Im not sure if this is useful or not, the amount of vodka is quite small (I think) I would really appretiate any comments on this, thx

VG has some inherent antimicrobial properties. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

yeah, having pets is a pain in the ass when DIY'ing. I have a "animal" free room that is my music, vape, and mix cave..... but every now and then i'll still find a hair in the room even though no animals are allowed in there.

gotta clean your mix desk and turn off any fans before mixing juice i've learned..... just to be safe.
