What's the best way of starting DIY if my only aim is to save money?
submitted about 9 years ago by supra95

Hey guys- UK vaper here, been lurking a week or so and reading around, looking for the cheapest way to get started with DIY.

I'm not looking for any elegant recipes or starting a new expensive hobby that costs me more than buying my own juice- I just want to save money and make decent juice for as cheap as I can.

Is there a good way of doing this and minimising the amount of flavours/equipment I need to buy? I was thinking of buying some 3mg 50/50 pre-mixed solution and just adding flavour concentrate of the juices I use to that: https://www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk/20ml-red-label-gold-standard-product.html

Is this the best and safest way to quickly start out with DIY and start savin money? (I'm in a student room, want to avoid concentrated nicotine if possible)

The trick with that is taking "donations" from friends and family in exchange for juice in order to continue your candy making research.

To be honest, I know we all say that, but, like if you order $500 of flavors and supplies, that lasts pretty much forever. Whereas $500 of retail juice will get you 25ish 30ml bottles - 25 30ml bottles will last you 3 months, and that's only if you're a slow vaper going through 30ml every 3.5 days.

> only if you're a slow vaper going through 30ml every 3.5 days

Everyone still using a MTL setup just pissed themselves reading that.

I mix at high nicotine - typically 10mg to 11mg -, so a 30ml generally lasts me 5-6 days. I have buddies who burn through 30ml in a day which is fucking inconceivable to me.

my first DIY order cost me about $110 CAD (and I got 25 flavors with all bases and nic) and I've already made over 300ml of liquid which would cost at least $500 at our local B&Ms.

best part is having tasty juice that doesn't force me to rewick every day.

The cheapest way is going to be buying your bases and concentrated nic separately (high mg concentrated...I think in the uk the highest you can buy is 75mg?) and mixing your own. If you buy 3mg 50/50 you are going to go through it pretty fast and have to restock a lot (albeit it would probably still be cheaper than premium juice). The intro cost will be slightly higher but your supplies will last longer (except VG be prepared to go through that like wild fire) find a few recipes that are in your flavor profile and just buy 30 mls of the flavorings and sit back. I don't know how much you need variety but one of my favorite adv is Mustard Milk and it's only 2 flavors (TPA Strawberry 6% and TPA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream 8%).

Alternatively you could buy the premixed bases and buy pre mixed concentrates. All up to you. Regardless I would save enough money in your budget for a scale and mix by weight.

Get yourself some oneshot wonder concs from chefsflavour.co.uk About £4.00 each for 30 mls. Most mix at around 20%. Dump the 30 mls in a big bottle, add about 120 mls of preffered PG/VG/Nic and shake.

driphacks.com also does one-shot flavor pre-mixes. Just heard about them yesterday.

You can get hold of premixed nic base from u/vapourdepot (really good stuff too) and pick up a few concentrates from there.

If you're not bothered about making up your own flavours, there's plenty of ready-to-mix concentrates floating around at the moment, which I believe you can pick up from Vapour Depot and also from Chef's Flavours (both of which have reddit discounts, see the side bar)

Whatever route you choose to take, make sure you pick yourself up a scale I picked up mine from Amazon and a few pairs of nitrile gloves.

Yes, you can do it on the cheap, but don't omit any safety precautions. Always wear gloves, and wear eye protection if you ever find yourself handing concentrated nicotine.

Other than that, be sure to save up your old bottles so you can reuse them and HAVE FUN!

Praise thee oh Drunkonladiesnight! PRAISE THEE! I never knew about CHef's Flavours man. Here in Holland its damn hard to get some good aroma's and usually they are out of stock too (like a lot of FW flavors). Then if you want a good DIY (or DIE) recipe, you have to order at three different suppliers! Now Chef Flavours not only is 1 shop that has everything, ITS CHEAPER then the vapestores in the Netherlands too! Hell even with shipping cost you will end up cheaper and now i can finally get some damn Bronuts up in this b...

So tnx Drunkonladiesnight :) The hussle might finally be over here for some kick ass diy flavors.

Buy just enough flavoring to mix into your base and you won't even need to measure anything once you get them. Just dump the flavoring bottle in (assuming enough space) and shake.

by matthewkocandaabout 9 years ago

I feel like there's too much room for error here. I could be wrong, and correct me if so, but how do you go about buying "just enough flavouring?" In some way, I feel like you'd still need to do some form of measuring.

1 points

by redbicabout 9 years ago

There are definitely some recipes that are simple and are like "8%x, 6%y, 4%z". That'd be 60ml, 45ml, and 30ml of each flavor and you'd have enough base for ~700ml of juice. It'd only work for very few recipes though.

1 points

by ngr900about 9 years ago

Depends on the recipe but it's doable. For example, my ADV is a single flavor at 5%. I buy 10ml bottles of that flavoring and mix it in 2 x 100ml bottles, so half the flavoring on one, half in the other. I use a 5ml syringe to measure nic. Done.

Save money?

Buy Bulk

PG/VG by the gallon

Nicotine liters of high concentration

Flavor by @ 12-16 oz(single flavors vape well also!)

Edit: sry UK vapor, removed link to US vendor.

1 points

by REDZED24about 9 years ago

I don't think buying 12-16oz flavor bottles is the most efficient way to go when you're just starting out. But once you nail down an ADV you could go that route.

New Mixer's Questions

Get single flavour stuff like Strawberry (Ripe) from The Perfumer/Flavour Apprentice or Vanilla Custard V1 from Capella and make some tasters at different percentages. You'll need to do experimenting no matter how little you want fancy recipes.

Or use Eliquid Recipes/alltheflavours, sort by top rating and get those ingredients.

Or just get premixed recipe concentrates and be done with it.

by fintanwabout 9 years ago

Never tried them but pre-made recipie concentrates are meant to be good and simple. then all you need is PG, VG and nicotine (and bottles to carry juice in). If you know what ratio you like you could probably find pre mixed pg/vg to make it even easier.

Only recipe concentraits I know of are ENYAWREKLAW's bronuts and rhodonite but I don't know how easy they are to find. I think it's something like 300mls of juice for $10 but it was while ago when I saw the ad.

ecigexpress has them, plus some others that you didn't mention. Here. Looks like they're selling out pretty quickly.

Edit: chefsflavors has them here for you UK folks.

Ok, I don't know squat about international commerce, but from what I'm seeing it looks like it would be cheaper to import your nicotine. As for flavors, unless the "Wicked Gold Standard" is really 'all that', you should be able to get Flavor Art and Inawera flavors cheap and easy.

Premixed is for suckers. That's how they make their money off the small consumer. Get 150ml each of pharmaceutical grade PG and VG from a trusted source, locally, assuming it's actually less costly than shipping heavy liquids, and order a 10ml of 100mg nicotine, (and some TPA and Capella flavors, if you want some US flavorings,) from wherever the total price is least and just mix all that together for your unflavored base. You'll want to keep that refrigerated since the nicotine will oxidize over the course of a couple months once you open it if kept at room temp. Then all you'll need is flavors. If maximum simplicity is the goal then you can actually mix some flavors in the tank though YMMV, and it's not that expensive to get a few TB syringes and a few ldpe squeeze bottles which will allow you to mix flavors separately and give them time to mellow.

The cheapest juice is the juice you actually vape, so be selective, be careful and always be safe. Even in small quantities you'll end up paying less than a quarter of what most vape shops charge for liquid, just mind your measuring and don't cross contaminate your batches and you should be good.

I recommend buying your concentrates from darkstar vapour. £3.50 I think for 30ml of concentrate so is quite cheap.

I'd recommend lubrisolve for PG&VG. If i remember correctly I bought 5l pg & 5l vg for about £30. I generally use chefsvapor.co.uk for concentrates as from memory they are one of the cheapest and their service is spot on, they also stock premixed concentrates if you wanted to go down that route. Not massively sure on best place for nic, I used alchemists cupboard previously but it wasn't amazing.

I can second lubrisolve. Just got 2L of 70/30 premixed for £15 delivered. I've used Darkstar for my nic. Seems good quality and was the cheapest I came across.

hey Man, I'm in the UK and doing the same thing, DIYing for the cost saving. I got premixed nicotine from F&S Cigs and some one shot flavours from vapour depot. Their cookie dough is amazing and I hear great things about the clotted cream but haven't tried it yet. They also sell a bunch of other one shots from other companies. I've also tried some recipes from the clone thread.

check out ECR_UK for other UKers and vendors who will help you out.

Fellow Brit here :)

I buy my concentrates via a Facebook group called Flavour Boss. Because, like you, I'm really just interested in saving money I go for their "Boss Shots" option. I choose which recipe I want and they ship me it already mixed up.

Their Facebook page is here, or you can see their clone recipes here

I've bought my nicotine, PG & VG from a company called Dark Star, but you can get these on Amazon, eBay, etc... if you prefer.

I've saved a fortune since doing this, plus I don't have to worry about running out as I've now got litres of juice :)

by Heisencockabout 9 years ago

What worked best for me was to check out the TFA recipe thread, find a flavor, 2, 3, or however many you'd like, and simply stick to a few different juices that sound good.

I've been making the same 2 damn flavors for the last year and I've spent maybe 70 dollars total on the ingredients. 70 bucks. 1 year of constant vaping.

1 points

by abduisabout 9 years ago

When I was in dorms I would mix vg and nic. When I first started I used flavor too but I got tired of it and just did vg and nic.

I bought 100mg/ml nic online. You said you don't want to deal with concentrated but it's really easy and hard to fuck up. I also bought 3ml blunt tip syringes on amazon so that I could measure out the nic. Then I just topped off the bottle with vg.

Super cheap. Works if you're just trying to get nicotine

1 points

by GetRichAndODabout 9 years ago

Damn, how did that taste??

1 points

by abduisabout 9 years ago

It's honestly not bad, I got used to it really quickly when I ran out of flavor and just thought fuck it, it's not worth it to me to buy more.

I've bought juice at B&M a handful of times since then and all I think about is how fast my coils gunk up

That is incredibly interesting. You sir are a simple man.

Sounds pretty solid to me.

Remember that the vg/pg/nic gets wayyyyy cheaper the more you buy.

My 2 cents:

  • as you mention, you will need PG/VG and nic, if is easier for you to get a base with the right amount of nic, go for it. The other option is purchasing PG and VG bottles and nic then do you the mx -flavours, instead of purchasing the standard Capella, TFA, etc you can get premixed concentrates so that you just have eto add the to your base to get the liquid ready. I particullary love https://www.chefsvapour.co.uk/, here they sell their own concentrates (their custards are awesome) and also, and this is the most awesome stuff, they sell the pre mixed concentrates of one of the most talented guys here, DIY or die vaping (Wayne) : bronuts, funfetti, etc Personally I love mixing but I also use vaporchef for Waynes recipes, and the mustar concentrates for my sister, she loves them.

I found it a little hit and miss but in Aus there is a store that sell some recipe kits. I found that the best way to start out, it gets you a few different flavors that you can kind of assume will work together and gets you used to it all in a "this should work if i do it right" mind frame. Saves you buying a bunch of flavors that you might not like or ever use again. Cost me $50 for a milkman clone, bottles, syringes, VG and PG. Came with enough flavor to make about 200ml of juice. I'd personally suggest that route cause it gives you some piece of mind. I have found the recipes on that page that databases them to be quite hit and miss.

Buy a gallon of VG.

Buy a liter of PG.

Buy your nic in PG, as highly concentrated as you can get. (120mL of 72-100 mg/mL nic should do you fine and PG is so much easier to work with)

Buy (2x) more flavorings than you think you'll be happy with, do some research here first.

Mix accordingly. PG nic is easier to deal with. Your flavorings are likely going to be PG based. (Check into this) That will make you (and your friends) a metric shit ton of juice (70-80VG, ~4,000mL) and you can decide where you want to go from there. Get the recommended scale too, mixing by volume is sketchy and inconsistent. Write down everything you make. Buy more flavors and supplies as you get the hang of it. Don't EVER run yourself out of nicotine. Enjoy your new hobby.

Best way to DIY and save money:

  1. Find a recipe you love

  2. Purchase the flavorings, VG, PG and nicotine in bulk

  3. Mix it up a flavoring base

  4. You're pretty much set for a long, long time

You can get a starter kit from thee-cigshop.co.uk for around £25 including flavours and nicotine. Should last a while and pay for itself in no time.

VG you can buy cheap from Boots, £1.39 for 200ml (Glycerol in the cough medicine aisle)

Try one shot flavours, mythicalmists.co.uk are good, £4 for 30ml and free (and fast) delivery over £15.

I've used all these and currently my costs are £1.03 per 30ml of juice

Someone already said the name of the site but i myself want to go their and order big lol and i don't want anyone snatching some precious DIY away from me (the Netherlands sux for DIY, its over expensive and stock is low to even non exsistence). But yeah, a quick google search and you'll come up with it yourself.

Check percentage, use a weight scale or just a needle (buy one, with a blunt tip), pour the correct ammount of juice in a bottle (buy one or clean up one of the premade you might have left), pour the rest with premix VG/PG mix with nicotine. Easy, saves a lot of money.

Pure nicotine is hard to get - almost impossible now with the dumb anti vaping laws going on here in Europa. Best i've spotted is 100mg/100ml. So if you want 10mg nic, you can make 1l with that (o nic pg/vg base is easy to find). But if you can, just buy premixed base (base pg/vg with nicotine). The cost are actually about the same sadly (premixed is even cheaper for me....20 euro vs 23 euro for a liter). I would def suggest you buy 1l and not 100ml each time (saves a lot of cash). Also, since you are new to diy, start off with 50/50. Then try 70/50 vg/pg. Is it to thick? lower the VG amount or just stick to 50/50. Don't go 100% VG or PG (unless you are allergic to one of the bases). 70/30 vg/pg seems like the most common used in recipes but 50/50 will do well to.

And yeah, that is it. I would recommand to try Mount Baker Vapor first (thug juice is awesome, as is their banana nut bread), vampire vape if you like fruit (and menthol) for heisenberg/pinkman and One hit Wonder. Keep the Diy or Die recipes for later on ;) Don't start with the best lol, caus everything else will look bland then.

I started mixing my own roughly 6 weeks ago and didn't have my first revelation until I found the Arabic Tobacco Essence from Bull City. It's just incredible how much it makes it taste and feel like a cigarette- I'm certain it's a real extract/concentrate. It gives you the same lung hit as a cigarette, on the inhale, and the exhale- something I've never experienced in a vape juice. I had other requirements as well.

  • has to taste good with coffee

  • has to taste good with food

  • has to taste good after brushing teeth

  • has to taste good if coil is too wet

  • has to taste good at low voltage

Never before could I get all these things in a vaporizer ejuice until I started mixing with the Arabic Essence. I drop 2 - 3 drops per 10ml of vg, I also add 6 drops of Hazlenut, and two drops Flavor West Cafee Coffee, with one drop of Capella Cup a Joe for my current adv. I'm certain there's other good tobacco flavorings, but this has the first I've tried that I can't get enough of.

That all depends on what your standards are and how picky you are. It depends on a lot of things. How often you can stay away from wanting to be creative and try new things. How quick you get tired of the same flavors and ect. I have spent a small fortune while coming here to save money. I have defiantly wasted more juice then I have vaped. If you have no desire to be creative and no desire to need to tweak recipes before you vape them then sure. You will be able to save money by picking recipes and vaping them even if you don't really care for them. The startup cost will be significantly higher then going out and buying a 30ml. The difference is that you can make a gallon of juice at the start.

For pg and vg I use theecigshop and buy it in the gallon . It pumps up the shipping to 7 pound but still works out much cheaper than the other uk suppliers . You can get a gallon of each shipped for less than 30 pound . Grab a 250ml of 72mg nic and some of the ready made flavors and your good to go for a few months

Th cheapest way is just buy base at your desired final nic strength and vape that. Or for even more savings buy higher strength base and cut it down with VG. Flavors cost money.

Edit: TL;DR - .
