POG (Passion fruit, orange, guava)
submitted about 9 years ago by crustycrew

Has anyone figured out a good POG flavor? If you don't know what POG is, its a passion fruit orange guava flavor. I can't even figure out a starting point cause I haven't worked with these flavors. Does anyone know what a good starting point is or a good recipe for this?

-FA passion fruit is the bees knees.

-FA Orange/Mandarin can create a nice base

-FW Blood orange - authentic orange, yet bitter

-TFA Guava smells like cat piss when vaped, so that's out of my mix from the start. Like walking into a single wide cat sanctuary trailer, filled with stale cat piss and rained on dog shit.

-CAP Sweet Guava is legit at 4-6% as a primary No experience with FA Guava

I may start with FA Passion, FA Orange/Mandarin, and CAP Sweet Guava. Will report once I settle on percentages.

Anyone want to collaborate with this on ATF?

FA Mandarin somehow jumped out of my cart last order. I gotta pick this up. I will confirm that FA Passionfruit and CAP Sweet Guava should be great here. I guess what I'm trying to say is...how patient are you? I'm looking to order flavors next week and I am down to work on this.

As patient as I need to be haha. I'd love to collab with a few of you. Just let me know a time frame. I'm gonna throw an order in too, just need to do a little bit more research on POG(auxiliary flavors, etc) and we'll fire it up.

/u/Philosaphucker already knows a love I good ménage à trois. Count me in. I will break my own rules in order to order CAP Sweet Guava next week instead of three weeks from now.

> No experience with FA Guava

It's a very realistic representation of the guava fruit, not like a sweetened guava confection (like the paste variety that's used in Cuban pastries and such..........(fuck, someone needs to jump on a guava pastelito recipe)). FA Guava is pretty dry and bitter, almost pithy at higher %'s. Personally, I love it in low %'s (0.1-0.5%) added to berry-heavy mixes. Its dry qualities help to create a more realistic fruit profile and pulls it out of fruit candy territory.

Anyway, it may still have a place in a POG recipe (honestly I've never heard of this until now), but they'll still need a guava flavor that leans more to the sweet and sugary type of guava (like Capella's).

I've tried it a few times in the past but I think it's been about a year since I last revisited it. It's on my long to-do list. At this point the best I can do is tell you what NOT to do.

How NOT to make POG Juice.

Failure #1: 5% CAP Passion Fruit, 5% FW Guava, 4% FW Blood Orange.

Failure #2: 4% CAP Passion Fruit, 7% FW Guava, 2% FW Blood Orange, 1% TFA Orange Cream

Failure #3: 3% CAP Passion Fruit, 8% FW Guava, 1% FW Blood Orange, 2% Orange Cream

Failure #4: 3% CAP Passion Fruit, 7% FW Guava, 3% FA Orange

Failure #5 : FA Passion Fruit 3%, FA Orange 3%, FW Guava 6%

Failure #6: FA Passion Fruit 2%, FA Orange 3%, FA Mandarin 1%, FW Guava 5%, FA Marshmallow 1%

Failure #7: FA Passion Fruit 1.5%, FA Orange 3%, FA Mandarin 1%, FW Guava 5%, INW Cactus 0.5%

The first one was too dry, apparently, and tasted like it had dirt in it. The second one tasted like the perfume worn by an overweight Hawaiian stripper. The third one tasted better but had a vicious throat hit. I failed to write down what was wrong with the fourth one, so it must have been too terrible for words. The fifth one tasted like bulimia. (?) (I take much better notes now than I did back then). The sixth one was "just plain weird." The seventh one was the best yet after a long steep but still not very tasty. Edit: a word.

CAP Sweet Guava is your friend here. I'll roll with one of your bases and plug it in. Want to collaborate on this utilizing the features in ATF?

Yes. I haven't thought about POG in a long time but looking at all that fail really makes me want fix it up nice. However, CAP Sweet Guava won't be in my arsenal until it arrives after I order it on September 1. You might be able to find a better collaborator who has it in hand already and can get right to work.

I'm certain it's the orange cream giving you the throat hit. I have an orange julius recipe with loads orange cream and it's delicious but yeah there's a throat hit.

It was. I'll usually come down hard against cap-off steeping because you're letting the flavor out but I think orange cream might be an exception. Heavy creams would be fine but unfortunately if you have other, light flavors in there with it, those will be escaping as well. Orange Cream is a delicious PITA, kind of like my second wife was.

I haven't had POG but I'd swap the FA orange and mandarin percents personally, maybe even 0.5% for the orange.

Yes, that would definitely have had better results. I think you can see I had problems with all three parts of POG. CAP Passionfruit and FW Guava are bad flavors for this, I used too much FA Passionfruit at least twice, I used too much FW Blood Orange the first time and failed to augment it with a sweeter citrus, and then at the end the FA Orange and Mandarin percents, were, as you noted, backwards.

Lol! What do you mean you take better notes now? Those notes are gold!

Ok, instead of a value statement like "better," let's just say I've learned usefulness of making more detailed flavor and recipe notes.

No experience with guava but I've been making a juice that smells and tastes a lot like those shitty j20 juices, that might be a starting point:

J2o 4% CAP Passion Fruit 3% CAP Sweet Tangerine 1% FA Fuji.

The passion fruit seems to sweeten the tangerine into a nice sweet orange taste and leaves the passion fruit nicely in the background.

Tried another revision with blood orange but it was either too much or needs to be lower as I felt it detracted from the tangerine. Next revision I'll probably try it at .5% Going to have to order FA Passion fruit next order.
