Question regarding Vapor's Tongue and Coil Longevity
submitted about 9 years ago by crkokinda

Hey folks, I'm quite new to the DIY scene, but I've noticed something interesting since I started making my own juice.

I started about 4 months ago, and I've been vaping a Blue Ice type flavor the whole time (max VG). I have not gotten "vapor's tongue" once since I've started. When I used to buy juice from stores, a flavor would maybe last me a week before it became muted.

Another thing I've noticed is how long the coils in my tank last. I use a Subtank Plus with standard OCC coils. They are lasting 3, sometimes 4 weeks each. I NEVER had that kind of longevity with store bought juice.

Has anyone else noticed this? I'm quite enjoying it myself, of course in addition to how much stinking cheaper it is to DIY.

Almost makes me wonder if stuff is put in store-bought juice to make you buy more. LOL

Yep a lot of store bought juice is full of sucralose which not only overloads juice with sweetness but also clog up your cotton and coils far, far quicker. Better concentrates and recipes can allow for the same sweetness with more distinguished flavours that won't clog up your coils since you rarely need to add sucralose.

Yeah, 5-10% sucralose will definitely do both of those things. You really notice it if you go back and try "premium" juice after making your own for a while. I bought a bottle of a rice crispy treat juice from ethos about a week ago because I'm trying to make a good rice crispy treat and wanted some fresh ideas. I couldn't taste anything but a very light cereal topped with mountains of sugar. Had to dump my tank because it was giving me a headache.

I'm having trouble with muted flavors but I don't use more than 1% sucralose. I've been adding marshmallow and ethyl maltol but I just don't understand all this stuff.

EM mutes if you use more than 1%. Hell, it might mute even sub 1% based on what else is in the mix. Use that one sparingly, see if that helps your mixes any way.

A lot of flavors themselves have EM and like karlmarco said if you are adding too much EM it will mute the juice. Honestly I'd avoid using any additive (EM,AP,Joy,sucralose, etc.) in any recipe until you have a good recipe and you cannot get the boost you need in any other way.

I can't vape the stuff my friends buy from vape shops. I think the juice from shops have wayyy too much flavoring.

Also after spending $20 on a bottle of "premium" juice and immediately coming home and making something just as good with 2 flavors I'm much happier sticking to DIY.

I actually recently did a "cleanse" with no flavoring. Just straight vg, pg, and nic for 2 weeks. I was able to taste flavors again after. I have been doing DIY for the better part of this year. The sucralose clogs coils pretty decently. There are plenty of flavorings that clog coils like the well known yellow cake. Flavorings that you would think to have a higher sugar content usually clog coils. I vape about 20ml of liquid on a dripper a day. I would get about 4-5 days on a dual extra regular coil setup. Around 0.3-0.4 ohms. When I changed over to flavorless, i was getting about 3 weeks on cotton pushing it a bit. It's all in the mixes.

I think vaper's tongue is a little different for everyone. Some flavors my tongue cannot handle and it gets overloaded quickly. Others I can vape a lot of and not see a big change in flavor.

Personally for me I cannot really do lemon and I've tried a lot of different ones. Everything decent I've made with lemon has a good taste the first 5 or so pulls but then it goes down quickly from there. It starts tasting a little bit like powdered lemon and then I only get a tiny hint of sour by the end of about 5ml. I get vaper's tongue on other stuff too, but not even close to this quickly.

I love citrus and sour stuff. I would just straight up eat a lime if I had one here and my mouth is watering thinking about it. I like lemons too but they are sweeter than limes so not as much. This is all speculation on my part but maybe I just taste citrus(or even just lemon?) more or differently than the average person. So when I vape lemon it's too much for my tongue to handle. With lime it does not happen near as bad, orange it really doesn't happen with. Pineapple I get good flavor off of for a bit but it also goes mostly away quicker than others for me. Doesn't happen when drinking these things mixed in something, just vaping.

Lemon/Lime/Apple are the only fruit flavours I have tried that I can always taste. Strawberry I stop tasting on my second pull and blueberry and banana lasts about an hour, Raspberry maybe two.

It would be really interesting to get a large poll together to see what the average person out there can taste more of while vaping. Maybe that was already done here and I missed it.

Strawberry is a weird one for me. I can definitely taste it some but there is a very very fine line between alright strawberry flavor and cough syrup. For some reason if I mix two strawberry flavors I almost always end up crossing into cough syrup.

The only blueberry I can really taste is Blueberry Extra, the others are either not there or very faint but that may just be the flavor itself.

3-4 weeks seems extraordinarily long. It's true about the juice, but I wouldn't keep my coils that long anyway. But yeah fuck sucralose, they should indicate such stuff on the bottle.

I no longer have issues with vapor fatigue after DIY. About a month ago I dripped a commercial juice it was strawberry/apple (tons of Cactus & sugar) after 5ml my cotton was light-brown and you could see the burnt sugar. Threw it out. Mixes with Yellow Cake and/or sweetener under 2% don't gunk-up like that. I think Loco_Mojo is right about the amount of sucrose/sucralose they use.
