Asthmatic new to vaping and DIY mixing, looking for flavor concentrates that cause as little chest irritation as possible?
submitted about 9 years ago by supernought

I've probably what you'd call moderate asthma and ever since people started using vapes in my old workplace I've experienced chest tightness when around vapers. 6 months after moving workplace I became a smoker (smart idea i know lol) and have very recently transitioned to vaping, hoping to kick the habit. I bought PG, VG and nicotine this week with a few bottles/syringes for mixing. Vaping unflavored e-juice hasn't given me any issues so far and would like to integrate flavors into the mix, as I'm thinking maybe certain compounds in commercial e-juices gave me issues when inhaling them second hand. Anyone who's in a similar boat care to share any advice on where to find flavor concentrates that irritate the chest as little as possible?

Thanks in advance!

Well it's going to vary from person to person on what will irritate you. I personally can vape most of anything and not get too irritated. The culprits that are more common that I've found are peaches and citrus fruits. So maybe stick to recipes that don't have those particular profiles. And also single flavor test all of your flavors if you do find an ingredient that irritates you. Since this kind of problem is usually really varied from person to person you will ultimately have to be the person to find out for sure which flavors are vapeable or not.

Yeah peach, citrus, and some apples mess with me. Sucralose or any other sweetener can be bad too in large amounts.

Menthol and similar flavors tend to aggravate my asthma, as will too much graham crust flavor. Oddly, My asthma is also humidity induced, and steam from faucets and showers can trigger it, but vaping generally does not.

Yeah man, like I said, there are just so many factors from person to person that there is no one "definitive " list. It's just going to have to be one of those trail and error kind of things.

TFA has the msds for all their flavors, and they list chemicals that are known respiratory irritants.

Edit: I took the time to rename all the files. I can rezip it and upload it when I get home.

Edit2: /u/supernought here is the file

I would also do the most VG you can. I don't put PG in any of my mixes (the only PG comes from the flavor concentrates) I have asthma and this helps so much. I can't vape anything that comes from a shop because of the amount of PG and that is why I got started in DIY. Hope this helps!

There's a lot of max. Vg juice out there, not sure how that excludes you from any "shop" juice and I assume that since you're on the Internet using Reddit you know of online shops?

there is a lot of max VG out there but everything in my local B&M was more expensive for Max and I am not patient enough to wait for shipping. There are a couple online shops I have bought from, I just like to know exactly what is in my juice.

There are a lot of different variables that play in to chest/throat irritation. It looks like you've already ruled out your bases/nic so that's good. Best way to do it is to try your flavors individually and see if any of those are irritating. A good way to tame irritants is to pair them with things like creams, cactus, mint. Some things will just always be irritating though, and you'd want to avoid those. You oughtn't need to avoid DAP altogether, but it would be a good idea to keep those as low as possible (so something like butterscotch banana custard may not be ideal for you!)

I also suffer from pretty bad asthma, and I can say after transitioning to vaping, and then to DIY, I haven't had to use an inhaler in over 1.5 years (something that I was using at least 5+x/day before; 2-3x/day prior to smoking).

EDIT: Although I covered pretty much all the pertinent topics, I composed this article on troubleshooting harsh throat that might be a good read for someone in your situation.

No personal experience, but chocolates, nuts and some creams can leave a lasting tickling or burning sensation in my throat. That's not to say they would affect an asthmatic, but I'd aim for lighter fruit flavors, like TFA Blueberry Wild, TFA Strawberry Ripe, CAP Golden Pineapple, etc, and use them at low percentages (1-3%) for starters.

I don't know if this is related or so, I used to have Ashtma a long time ago and some time after starting vaping I was getting some sort of sore throat and chest pains. I've recently purchased 0mg liquid and it does the difference. Also I found that a little bit of menthol really help.

Just vape pure VG in an RDA.

Avoid like the plague: juicy peach, some citruses and high PG ratios.

Once you figure out what flavors you wanna try from the other comments, I recommend letting the juice sit in the bottle with the cap off over night. Typically it's not recommended to do this for more than a few hours because it can mute the flavors a little bit. I think in your case it could help. There will still be flavor there but it will be more mellow.

I have asthma that's moderately bad and vaping does exacerbate it - certainly some flavours are worse than others. I find that it isn't even particular flavours that can make it bad - it can be particular brands of flavours. So one banana was hell on earth and led to instant asthma aggravation, while another would be perfectly fine. I've wasted so many flavours picking out ones which are ok.

All I can suggest is buy flavours that you like the sound of cheaply. Mix small batches (5ml) at lower than recommended single flavour percentages and try them, see what effect they have and build up a portfolio of flavours that work for you.

Go as high of vg as possible.

I found that ingredients like Custards and Heavy Creams give me slightly more of a chest feeling when inhaling. Not really irritation but you can tell there is something different.

I have asthma and I think this is an issue that affects everyone differently. I can't vape any pg but I've also been dx'd with an allergy to it. Another friend with asthma vapes pg heavy eliquids because vg makes her chest feel heavy like she can't breathe. I've heard that from others with asthma about vg. There's others that are fine with 50/50. This is why I say it's very individual.

As far as flavorings, that's the same thing. Strawberry from one company may affect you, but strawberry from another company might not because they may be molecularly different. I think the safest bet is synthetic flavorings since it's more likely organic flavorings could be similar to something your allergic too.

I would also advise staying away from cinnamon. I had a huge reaction to the point of seeking medical care and come to find out that's not unusual for atopics (asthma and allergies).

The good news is this stuff is much easier to figure out when you DIY. I use super concentrates from Vaping Zone or Bull City and concentrates from Medicine Net. NN also has a line of pg free flavorings and additives. I also vape unflavored quit a bit. There are about 10 eliquid manufacturers that specialize in pg free liquids.
