Flavor Reviews; Coil builds
submitted about 9 years ago by vapaiolo

This is piggy-backing off this post by /u/ClaptonBurns (I just didn't want to hijack their thread). What's everyone's opinion about coil builds that should be used for testing/rating flavors? I tend to think the build should be one that is maybe a bit more commonplace/simple/one we've heard of. But then I consider the fact that some people test flavors not only for the public/reviews; it's also to test a flavor "under a microscope" and capture the different notes and subtle nuances. But for the public's sake, I feel like a complicated coil build will sway the review in a way that us simple folk can't relate to. Anyway, just my opinion. Chime in with your thoughts.

It's all so subjective. The only way you can really know is to test these flavors yourself, on whatever build you're using. I have several tanks/RTA's and various pre-built coils that I use. I also have RDA's galore. If I test a flavor on my Sapor and then use it in a recipe on my TFV4 with Octo-Coils will it be the same? Wickless, Organic Peruvian Cotton, Rayon, etc. There are a lot of variables that make the whole flavor review thing more of a jumping off point.

Yes. And the flavor reviews & the comments they encourage are a great way to find out whether or not you really want to test that flavor yourself. Or more accurately, since we all want to try all the flavors, a great way to help you decide which ones you're going to try next.

Exactly. I think the posting of coil build and wattage and ohms is important but ONLY for experienced mixers as different setups affect flavor differently. Wayne has a great metaphor involving open back and closed back headphones. Iunno. Shit doesn't really matter in the end.

Seems to me that it would only truly be important if you tried two very different setups and noted the flavor differences in the review. But it's not hurting anything the way it is being done and as you said, it doesn't really matter. People taste things differently regardless.

Standard coils are the safe bet, macro style, etc.

Claptons are usually a step up, you can find premade clapton wire in most places now. These have become a little more standard and easily accessible. (Though still easy to make yourself.)

Fused claptons are my usual go to, I don't even have to wick if I don't want to and if I'm just testing. They hold a ton of juice, they're not as warm as parallel builds so they're still pretty close to standard. But there's a TON of surface area so they magnify everything.

Framed/staple coils are a niche pick. If you can make them, or buy them, do so. They're worth the time/energy/money. I wouldn't do flavor reviews or testing on these right off the bat. But if you've done extensive testing and are wondering if there's any nuances you haven't picked up on, these will help you catch all the minor notes to figure out if you can make more changes that way.

I test on whatever coil I've currently vaping on. That way I know how it'll vape when I go to actually vape it, outside of testing. People tend to vape much hotter than I do anyway, so my results and theirs are more than likely not going to be exact anyway.

I have friends that run claptons and a bunch of other crazy stuff, but I honestly don't notice that much difference in flavor at least between theirs and my parallels. Yea, their clouds are obnoxiously massive and they're running 0.2 or less while I'm 0.35-0.45, but I just don't get that much more flavor (if any) from their fancy builds.

I don't do crazy builds but I use fused claptons pretty much exclusively. I get better flavor from single coils. My builds usually ohm out .25 - .4 and I vape between 40-60 watts. Nothing crazy.

I just get better flavor from fused claptons as opposed to any round wire builds. I believe this is just because the claptons actually hold more juice in the coil.

This is correct. The more surface area & the more grooves in your claptons, the better the flavour & a more efficient nic rush/delivery. I just stick to claptons/fused claptons. I used to run twisted builds when lazy, but then with the advent of 15ft fused/claptons for $6, wth why not.

Although, I've always gotten better flavour from dual builds than single builds.

Also: postless builds FTFW. Shits so easy & so cash.

Yeah I just sit down and make like 20 fused claptons in one sitting and am set for a few months

Maybe I'll go back to some dual builds. Not to say I don't. I'm running dual fused claptons in my griffin 25.

But, I'm also using the Theorem, which is single coil. This thing is blowing me away on flavor! The airflow design just works so nice.

I'm also running single coil in my tsunami. I'm actually vaping some random crappy recipe called Peachberry Cream. Maybe you've heard of it. Jk! It's pretty damn good! Thanks for making blueberry vape I actually enjoy.

What do you mean by "postless builds"? Just an RDA that has holes in the deck with screws on the bottom outer edge, or something else?

I agree. While I haven't tried doing any crazy builds, I do know I get way better flavor off my fused claptons than standard cois or even single core claptons.

Good point. I concur

Derringer RDA, 26 gauge kanthal A1, micro coil, 7-10 wraps (I aim for around 1 ohm because I MTL), a bit of cotton like Vurve taught us in Modest Monday post about flavor testing. That is all.

Just my approach, each is entitled to his or her own.

24ga, 5 wraps inner diameter 2.5mm in my Kayfun 5 has amazing flavor.
