It's been slow the last few days, let's help inspire each other!
submitted about 9 years ago by ajsam3Diketones, Schmiketones

It seems flavor reviews have slowed a bit, which in all honesty is kind of nice. Also, it's summer, so people probably have a lot more going on with friends and family and have put recipe creation on the back burner. People are always mixing, I'm not here to say that they aren't, but I know I'm more lethargic in the summer months and my creativity takes a hit. The sub has seemed dead the last few days and I'm trying to speculate why.

The reason I'm making this post is to pose a simple question and hopefully start a dialogue to get people's brains switched to that happy place where true inspiration strikes.

What are some delicious real life foods that have yet to be transferred to ejuice?

I for one love pretty much any kind of baklava, it would be a killer juice if done right.

Like I said, just want to help everyone (and myself) get some creative juices flowing, pun intended. All this hit me on my bus ride home today, thinking this might be a spark for some people to mix up something fantastic, including myself. Hope everyone is enjoying a happy summer season filled with love and prosperity, this community is truly a beacon of creative energy and will undoubtedly become the leaders of the consumer market if the future pans out like the FDA wants it. Much love.

I've been busy remodeling my house and have been putting in long hours at work. Not to mention summer weddings, family reunions, weekend getaways, etc. I do have a couple recipes I'm waiting to put in the August thread, as I'm sure many others do too. Also, most of the action is in the new mixer's thread, just sort by new. Plenty of stuff to dig through there. Just because you aren't a new mixer doesn't mean there isn't any good info that you might not know in there, or you could even help someone out if you know what they're struggling with.

Ever since someone bitched about too many flavor reviews on the front page, it's easy for most people's attitudes to be "fuck it." Thank whoever it was, I don't really care, not going to go back and look it up. Frankly, I like dropping in every couple days or so and reading a 8-10 new relevant posts/flavor reviews rather than a new front page every day of non-contributors asking for clones or people who can't bother searching a million other posts or using the new mixers thread to find out why their shit nicotine or 10% (insert any flavoring with no steep time) is making their juice harsh. This has never been a crazy busy sub, and most of us hope it stays that way. I liked the flavor reviews, but I'm not sure if people are actually busy, or just not submitting much because of that one whiny post.

EDIT: A bacon cheeseburger with onions and pickles juice sounds hella good.

Don't get me wrong, the flavor reviews have been incredibly helpful. I work 6 days a week, I can only do so many single flavor tests in my free time. You guys doing the grunt work has been an amazing resource for mixers of every level.

I just wanted to make a post for some weird conversation. Bacon cheeseburger with pickle juice, case and point lmao. Thanks for all you do by the way, sure helps lurking mixers like me along the path.

If /u/chrisdvr1 can make a tomato soup that people... not me, but people... are actually willing to try, you can make eggplant parm. Just take your basil tomato sauce (Ripe Tomato, Zen Garden) and pour it over eggplant (TFA Pumpkin) that's been breaded (INW Biscuit), fried (FA Joy, AP), and topped with parmesan cheese (TFA Sweet Cream).

Wait, were you just joking about the eggplant parm vape?

What kind of indian pudding?

its a molasses based pudding thats popular in new england and usually served with ice cream. im trying to replicate my favorite one from a place called Durgin Park in Qunicy Market in Boston.

Ooh that does sound pretty good. Can you find any culinary recipes online for something similar?

When I hear Indian pudding I instantly assume there must be some spice element to it. Coriander, cinnamon, cardamom. Am I way off base here?

nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, maybe some clove. ive been trying a few different spices out. Ive been playing around with flv rich cinnamon, fa ginger, inw biscuit, tfa brown sugar, tfa vbic, fa joy, tfa holiday spice, fa cardamom, and some acetyl pyrazine. I think its missing some caramel, butterscotch, molasses, and maybe some fa fresh cream or vienna cream.

I remember you! :-D

I'm embarrassed that I forgot all about trying to make this one into a vape!

Did you ever make that recipe from the New England Cookbook I sent you? Or get someone to make it? It's a serious PITA, but it is such a good recipe.

by cpmerrillabout 9 years ago

My great aunt used to make a different version so I passed this on to her so hopefully when I'm up in Boston in a couple weeks I'll get her to make it. If not I may have to find the time and patience to work it out myself

by RuntDastardlyabout 9 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Oh, jesus, if there's any way you can get your hands on your great aunt's recipe and pass it on to me, I'd be absurdly grateful, otherwise, yeah, kill an afternoon some brisk fall day making that NE Cookbook one. It's a hassle, yeah (the hot water bath, all the timed stirring), but, once you're digging in, it doesn't feel like wasted time.

I could kill an 8X8" pan of it singlehandedly in one sitting. Fortunately I have good handlers around me to keep me from doing so. Right now one's trying to keep me from mixing another lemondrop martini. BRB, need both hands for combat. ;-)

One thing I thought about working on was a Rhubarb Custard Bar after tasting INW Rhubarb, but never really got around to experimenting with the profile. I also think there has been a lot of good banoffee pie recipes, but not one that has really nailed it (at least not that I've found), so that would be one I'd like to see.

I cannot express how much I would like to recreate the flavor of a slush type drink that I would get every so often throughout my childhood, they have many flavors and I tried them all but the absolute best imo was when you would combine the blue (Blue bubblegum I believe) and the yellowish-creme (thick sweet vanilla cream) colors/flavors. The result was a green almost teal slush that had a strange refreshing bubblegum-like flavor that could be found no where else but in that slush.

Alright. Sorry for the brick of text but I don't know much about this drink and would like to give as much information as possible.

Here's what I have to go on.

The drink is referred to as a Raspado.( It's like a slush.)

Two primary flavors:

  • Blue bubblegum: Tastes very similar to classic pink bubblegum but seems to have blue raspberry to it, though I can't find any evidence to support the blue raspberry. Inawera's Blue Dwarf really caught my attention when looking for this flavor but I haven't tried it and suspect it would need more bubblegum to support it.

  • Vanilla/Lechera: This is a very milky vanilla. The creaminess makes me think of vanilla almond milk without the almond. I haven't had the drink in some time so I can't nail this one down and I'm torn between if this is the vanilla or lechera flavor listed on the site.

And the website: Almibares Mexicanos is a brand of Rasparado syrup sold online, I highly suspect this is the brand used to create the drink I'm fond of and they list bubblegum and vanilla as flavors. What throws me off is that they also list "Lechera - a sweetened milk" which could very well be the creme I'm looking for.

As you might see I'm very interested in this flavor. Any help/suggestions on flavors to use would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to find others that have tried this.

I've been overburdened with life and work lately and cursing the way those things keep getting in the way of my mixing many of the great-looking recipes people have shared here. If I've told you I plan to mix up something of yours and tell you what I thought of it, I promise I will, just haven't gotten to its place in the queue yet.

I'm also debating whether an original Honey Bun recipe is worth sharing yet or could still use some tweaks, collaborating with another mixer on a donut that actually tastes like a donut, and worshipping at the altar of our Lord and Savior, FLV Mango. I haven't counted but I think I have 20 different recipes in the works all highlighting this nectar of the gods. When they start coming together, ya'll are going to be drowning in a flood of delicious mango recipes.

2 points

by TechnicolorRainbowsabout 9 years ago

I'm ready. I just dived into FLV and love them, definitely checking out Mango because I've saw you talking about it a lot. I think I'm ready for a donut recipe that doesn't taste like playdough, and Honey Buns sound perfect for the fall. I've been wanting to try that on my own but as you've said. Work, work, work and crazy life.

1 points

by ID10-Tabout 9 years ago

I feel pretty strongly about the mango because it's my 8th mango flavor and I invested a considerable amount of time experimenting with failed attempts to come up with some combination of the first six that tasted like FLV's does all by itself. So I'm going to keep preaching the gospel of it until I convert you all.

Don't get too excited about the Honey Bun; it's inspired by a Little Debbie Iced Honey Bun. I know it can taste better - just like a honey bun can be elevated way above something that comes out of a vending machine. But I don't want it to taste better. I want it to taste like Little Debbie. It's kind of a nostalgia thing.

You're welcome to help with development of the donut if you want. I'm stuck in neutral on it, just revving my engine until I make and receive my next flavor order because I ran out of Joy.

Yeah, I'll let you know how donut v4 turns out, tomorrow. If it tastes like doughy goodness, I'm gonna drop some Meringue in it and see what happens.

I've tried t make something that comes close to tasting like Rivella (a Swiss soft drink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOaxCBur3yU).

One of the main ingredients is lactic acid - which (correct me if I'm wrong) has been tried by some to make nicotine not have such a strong throat hit.

Other than that, if anyone has tried it, I would be super grateful to get some pointers together on where to start with it. And if you didn't try it, I strongly encourage you to do so ;)

This might be odd, but cornbread. Its not really a savory flavor IMO but more like a sweet bread or cake. The hardest part about this would be finding a sweet corn flavor obviously, or a corn flavor that would work period. It would likely require some weird flavor bending to try and mimic it, and the more I think about it the less I think it possible.

Certainly an odd idea, but maybe it'll give someone else a better one.

My co worker was describing Ube ice cream to me and now I really want to try it.. being lactose intolerant, I would love to create a vape for it instead. No clue even where to begin though since I haven't tried Ube and the closest flavor concentrate to purple yams I can find is pumpkin. Suggestions?

Edit: Used sidebar and found some reviews for duomei's ube but I am not willing to spend ~$40 or more for 10 kilograms of concentrate... other recommendations besides TFA Taro? PS I am totally interested now in making a Green Tea Kit Kat recipe...

I still have yet to make a Boba tea that tastes like the real thing. I think the problem I have there is that I have yet to find a tea flavoring that I like. I don't like FA Black tea at all. I wanted to like it, even bought a new bottle thinking that maybe I got a bad batch but no matter what I do with it, it tastes harsh. A White Zero Ultra monster vape would also be yummy. I drink one almost every morning.

That White Zero monster is my next on the list, as it's exactly the same situation with me, I conveniently lost the count as I chug them like water. Maybe collab on that one?

Well I've tried this for the last few days - I really liked rocket pop by rocket fuel vapes, read their description of the flavour, and put something together with the concentrates I had.

Although it is certainly not the same, I really do like it quite a lot, and it is bringing quite a lot of freshness and juicyness to the table.

Of course, I'm always open to suggestions for improvements.

Actual Crema Gelato. It's just milk, eggs & sugar, so there shouldn't be any vanilla notes in there at all, yet any flavor I've worked with that has the appropriately eggy notes comes front-loaded with masses of vanilla.

I love vanilla and all, I'd just really like to capture some kind of custardy gelato note for a proper crema with no other supporting flavors like vanilla or citrus.

2 points

by ID10-Tabout 9 years ago

Shit, you're right. I've never thought of that before, but nothing we call "eggy" comes without vanilla or citrus.

Hey, what about FA Meringue? Just FA Cream Fresh and an ungodly amount for FA Meringue, like way more than anyone in his right mind would use? Theoretically, that might give you a "just milk, eggs, and sugar" type of flavor.

2 points

by RuntDastardlyabout 9 years agoOne of "The Damned"

You know, that's not a bad idea, because I cannot think of a single instance where I've used FA Meringue any higher than, like, 1.5% so I have no idea what it would be like at insane amounts.

My gut tells me it lacks the "weight" or richness to carry it off, but my gut is pretty stupid most of the time, so it's definitely worth a shot. Thanks!

2 points

by ID10-Tabout 9 years ago

I believe Vurve called it "greasy cheese" at anything over 1%. But I've mixed with it 2% and not tasted anything like that. InstigmaTheory's French Quarter Clone uses it at 2% and that tastes like a spot-on beignet. I can't find it now now but I swear someone said it tastes like sugared eggs over 3%. Guess I like sugared eggs; I enjoy it standalone and think it tastes like actual meringue at 3%, like the meringue part of a pavolva. When I said an ungodly amount, I mean like 4%. Maybe even 5%. Something only a crazy, desperate person would do. How desperate are you for this crema gelato?

Your gut is right - it's too light and fluffy - but maybe that heavy cream of FA Cream Fresh has enough weight for the both of them? It might be worth mixing up a very small tester of 4% of each of those and seeing what happens. If it's awful - well, at least you'll know what NOT to do - and that maybe listening to my gut isn't always such a great idea.

I want to try making a rice pudding juice but I havent figured out how to approach it yet. I have a feeling TFA Horchata Smooth might be something to take a look at.

1 points

by RuntDastardlyabout 9 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I really love TFA Horchata Smooth, and I think you're on the right track with that one, though it is still woefully light on the glutinous rice note. Good, clean, basic rice notes are lacking all around, (like simple cornmeal flavors are curiously missing from the mixer's palette. I don't count AP - too easy to drift into Fritos territory!) Grab CAP's Horchata, too, because I feel like it captures that gooey runoff from a homemade rice pudding really accurately.

TFA Holiday Spice at around 0.12%-0.25% would be a nice touch for a bit of nutmeg, too.

I believe my favorite dessert ever could be transferred pretty well into ejuice.

It is made of "creme de marrons", a very sweet and dense chestnut purée : http://www.bentokawaii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/marron-creme.jpg

The cake is just "creme de marrons" mixed with whipped white eggs, cooked in a water bath in an oven to make it kind of a fluffy mousse, caramelized on the side. It is eaten with a lot a vanilla custard sauce (crème anglaise). Absolutly delicious.

It looks like FA has made a chestnut flavour but a quick search on this subreddit and internet returned close to no results. Seems like almost nobody ever tried it! Unfortunatly it's quite risky to import DIY supplies in my country so I haven't been able to order it but it's clearly a recipe I'd love to try.

Just started, so I am not framiliar with all of the flavors and whatnot yet. So my list of recipes is low.

But I am looking for baklava as well, along with Mary janes. No not pot. The candy, Mary Janes. You might know them as those strange orange and black wax paper candies you got on halloween as a kid. Most people appearntly hate them but I love them.

I can't quite get the flavoring right though. It should just taste like Peanut butter and brown sugar mainly. Any help with undernotes or anything of the like would be appreciated. I've been considering marshmallow to give it more of a full feeling and edge up the sweetness...
