The syrup from canned pears is delicious and I need some thoughts on replicating that
submitted about 9 years ago by captaincannibal

I've not done a lot of mixing lately outside of single flavor stuff to keep me going (apologies to those of you wondering about my Shurb mix, it's on hold at the moment).

So I've always loved those canned pears you get at the grocery store. The syrup is especially yummy. I'm not talking about that weak-ass lite shit, I mean the heavy stuff.

I've had no problem replicating a decent canned pear flavor, but the syrup part has really been eluding me for a while. I'd love any suggestions you guys may have.

From what I've seen around the web, the recipe for the stuff varies greatly (shocking..) Del Monte lists their canned pears as containing pears, water, HFCS, sugar, and corn syrup. So basically just sugary water and syrup that pears have sat in for a while. Sounds easy enough, yeah? But apparently not.

Other ingredients for this syrup I've seen include..

  • Water and sugar. Great!

  • Lemon juice, water, and sugar. Sure, sounds right.

  • A vague instruction to use "water and sugar or a fruit juice of your choosing".

  • Sugar, water, anise, cardamom pods, cinnamon. Okay, little too much for me.

It seems pretty simple - we just need something that tastes like sugar and maybe a fruit juice. My thought is apple juice which I have no issues with. But the sugar.. I've tried sucralose and EM and neither really gave me what I was looking for.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Any other magical sweeteners out there that I could try that are more "sugary" than the others?

Anything you guys throw out is very much appreciated. Much love.

Did you try it yet? When I suggested it, i had been vaping FLV Mango at 6%, and to me it had some of the characteristics of that syrupy pear juice. I'm wondering if it made the connection for you.

Haven't gotten around to trying it yet, thoroughly broke after helping the SO move for her new job. As soon as my paycheck rolls in though I'm grabbing it. Thanks again for the suggestion, it's definitely intriguing.

As far as sweeteners go, some reviews on NN Monk Fruit say it's overly potent, and accents fruit flavors well. I have some on order, but haven't tried it yet.

I've seen it, yeah. I've also heard it can get preeettttyy potent. I saw they have a new sweetener as well which some have described as "sugary". I'll have to add them both to the list. Thanks!

You're welcome. I just got the stevia in my last order and haven't played around with it yet.. Good luck on replicating the syrup..

FA Brandy under 0.5% might assist you in this after a decent steep. Kind of alcohol-y initially, but it really gets thick after a steep.

Maybe some Cactus with Gummy Candy and Sweetener of choice for the syrupy part?

Late to the party here, but I've had great luck just layering FA and INW Pear, and maybe a tiny bit of INW Peach to back up the syrup texture,
