Happy Monday once again everybody!
While today's topic isn't directly about becoming a better mixer, I thought it would be a fun topic to talk about. As DIY'ers, we have complete control of our juice and what we put into it.
#Stealth Vaping
While it's generally not illegal to vape indoors, it can be considered bad social etiquette sitting there blowing clouds and disturbing those around you. The story of the person on ECR who had silverware thrown at them for vaping on the patio comes to mind. So, I just want to share some of my experiences and knowledge. There's three main components to stealth vaping: gear setup, e-liquid composition, and flavors
#Gear Setup
Just about any piece of gear can be use for stealth vaping. Though it does help to have a tank or RDA setup that is more geared towards high PG mixes. It doesn't matter if you have a 3x18650 DNA200 mod, or a 1x18650 starter mod, both can be used successfully.
Having recently fallen in love with my Sigelei 213, I find it to be a perfect mixture of size and battery life. It easily fits into my pocket without bulging and I can do 2-3 days on a stealth setup without changing batteries.
And since we are going stealth, you want a build that is going to minimize clouds. What I have found to work best for me is a tank or RDA with complete airflow control, around 0.8 ohms, 40w max, with a very basic coil setup (no claptons, twisted, fused claptons, etc). I go with around 0.8 ohms because it still gives me a little bit more flavor and warmth. Naturally though, if you want to stay 100% stealth, you will be better off staying above ohm. This means less power, less heat, and less clouds.
#E-liquid Composition
This goes hand in hand with the gear itself. The vg/pg ratio and nicotine content.
It's no mystery, lower VG equals less clouds. What everyone fails to mention though is how disgusting PG tastes. It's very bitter and astringent in flavor. Even if I'm vaping just for the nicotine, I have a hard time with the flavor of the PG. My cut off seems to be around 65/35 VG/PG. While this is still a moderate amount of VG, we can still mitigate the amount of clouds we put off.
Increase your nicotine! I know, it sounds a bit blasphemous since you probably aren't trying to increase you nicotine tolerance.
However, the higher your nicotine content, the less vapor you need to draw on your inhale. This allows you to still have a decent sub-ohm setup without having to go to low on your vg. All these things factor into the end goal though.
#Flavorings
This is the part I really want to talk about today. This is the part we control as DIY'ers. The flavor of your e-liquid. If you're outdoors, then this probably isn't such a big deal. However, if you work in a small office or other confined space, the smell of your vape could bother others, or give you away if you aren't supposed to be vaping.
There is one very obvious answer here, and it's to go flavorless.
However, since you guys are reading my post, this probably isn't your preferred option. So, I want to go over some flavors I have found in my experience to be good options for stealth vaping, and which to avoid altogether.
Avoid
- Strawberry/Maltol/Ethyl Maltol
So, this flavor set has a wide range of detection to people. Some people cannot smell or taste these components at all. Then there are people who can pick them out like a blood hound. People have come up to me nearly 30 minutes after my last pull off mustard milk and asked me why it smells like cotton candy in the office. This flavor just likes to linger in the air and is very detectable to the right people
- Bakery
All types of heavy bakery flavors seem to be instantly noticeable to me when someone else is vaping them. Whether it's yellow cake, biscuit, or cinnamon Danish swirl, I can immediately pick up on it. The most important aspect of avoiding these is that despite other flavorings being just add detectable, these flavors always seem out of place. So unless you're trying to stealth vape around a bakery, it would be best to avoid the all together.
- Tobacco
I don't think this warrants much discussion. Everyone knows what tobacco smells like, and it garners additional attention towards you since it's illegal to smoke tobacco indoors most places these days. Just don't risk it and avoid the potential accusations of doing something illegal.
Acceptable
- Creams
They tend to be very light add far as flavor goes, and don't seem to draw anywhere near as much attention in my experience. Flavors like TFA VBIC and FA cream fresh are very delicious and decent for mixing as a single flavor if you desire to go this route for stealth vaping. If you take other precautions of increasing your nicotine and vaping at a higher resistance, these are undetectable.
- Citrus
Orange, lemon, and lime have yet to cause any problems either. They aren't very detectable and, most of all, they just smell fresh. Similar to a citrus mint or cleaning product, the smell just isn't out if place if you catch a whiff of it.
- Mint/Menthol
One of the ladies I make juice for only vapes straight menthol, and despite how aromatic it is in your sinuses, I can't say I've ever smelled anyone vaping it. Similar to the citrus flavoring, this smell would not be out of place within an office. It's mild and smooth. Not likely to upset anyone.
#Conclusion
If you're in a place you should be considerate with your vaping, make sure to do so. Vape stealthy and don't piss people off. It gives the rest of us a bad name in a time there is already strife within the industry.
And just a pro-tip, if you leave your stealth setup at home, find a paper towel or napkin and exhale through that or your shirt. Literally no clouds or smell to linger around.

Also a good way to minimize clouds is to take a deep breath after your original inhale. Kinda like when you're told to hold it in when smoking the dank stuff.
Ahhh the double inhale... Getting me through airport transfers every time
Also the old blow down into your shirt slowly trick
Every time I try that, I end up with THIS
/u/matthewkocanda is so stealth I can't remember the last time I saw him around here.
I creep. Been going through some shit so I just have kinda been isolating myself. But I'm still here in the shadows.
You can also cut max VG with 10% DW for a stealth vape. Water has very little vapor, less than PG.
I've been to many bars that are OK with it as long as you ask, but even then you don't want to go blowing massive clouds everywhere. As long as it's just a puff here and there that gets blown straight up or down depending on the size of the establishment, non-vapers probably won't even notice.

^^Also, ^^sometimes ^^a ^^small ^^puff ^^exhaled ^^down ^^your ^^shirt ^^easily ^^goes ^^un-noticed ^^if ^^you ^^are ^^somewhere ^^that ^^absolutely ^^doesn't ^^allow ^^it, ^^but ^^use ^^discretion.
Great write up. I do a couple of other things, and I follow most of what was typed.
I put some dryer sheets or whatever in a paper towel roll and exhale through that.
I can vouch for the citrus flavors barely registering in the modern office; there are so many scented things in the offices I visit. Also, the deep breath tricks works well. If you hold it longer, not much comes out. My other trick, for my all day work vape, I use my standard MaxVG juices, tobacco with a dash of cinnamon or citrus or something, and I only use half the flavoring.

Uh, do you know any flavorings that taste/smell like tobacco? I was searching far and wide and the best I found was a juice that tasted like wet cigarette butts, which would probably be alright in pure PG but tasted disgusting in PG/VG due to VG's sweetness.
Nobody has ever once identified my tobacco flavors with tobacco... it comes off as bourbon, sugar, caramel, but never any sort of tobacco. In a 10% tobacco and .2% caramel mix, the caramel is almost always the one commented on...
Marshmallow seems to be much more of an "offensive" flavor for vapor than tobacco, and it's the only flavor I've ever heard a nonvaper describe as "burnt"...
The "tobacco" type flavors seem to be fairly neutral in terms of smell in my experience.
Inawera Dirty Neutral Base mixed with a little Tobacco Absolute 10% dilution tastes and smells like ashtray.
>Tobacco Absolute
