I would like to compile a list of ways to take the harshness out of fruits.
submitted about 9 years ago by xsirxx

So I have noticed that alot of people have reactions whether throat, mouth, or lung when fruits are used. I see the most common way of taking the harshness out is to use creams. I think that's why we see alot of cream based recipes.

So I would love to know what ways you all use to take the harshness down so we all have better alternatives to using fruits. Maybe it's time? Specific creams? Some other additive? Technique? Quantity?

Thanks all!

Edit:. I will compile a list of ideas to try and add them up here. Also a good idea came out below, has anyone found a fruit to be harsh and found a replacement that was not or at least better?

Ideas that came out in the thread:

  1. TIME Steep.

  2. Additives Cactus 0.25-1% (Side effects: Higher volume yields sock flavor? soap flavor?) Ethyl Malol 0.25-1% (Side effects: Flavor muting) Marshmallow 0.25-1% Pyrue Stevia Sour FA MTS (0.25-0.5%) (Side effects: Flavor muting)

  3. Avoidance Linalool (contained in TFA Juicy Peach and others)

  4. Replacement Peach (try INW Peach, secondly FLV Peach?)

  5. Usage (for the vapor not the DIYer) Low wattage and higher ohms.

  6. Usage (for the DIYer) Using lower amounts can still bring flavor and lower harshness.

  7. Creams Using creams overall always help to bring down the harshness but can also change the flavors dramatically.

I would like to get more concrete data on this problem maybe specific replacements for flavors/brands, maybe additive percentages per flavor, what power levels affect users, what specific violates are causing the problems, specific times for specific flavors to steep. I appreciate EVERYTHING you have all added to help this situation and hope that we can get some more concrete data to fix this once and for all!

The two best methods I've found in my experience working with a lot of fruits:

  1. Let it steep.

  2. Make posts here while you Let it steep.

This is the correct answer.

Correct, ironic, and a little bit insolent. Dischord hit the trifecta!

Ethyl Maltol really helps, especially with stronger citrus. I rarely go over 1% myself, as EM does tend to mute the flavor after a longer steep.

Does that affect layering quite a bit or does that only happen at certain levels of use?

Beyond smoothing some harsh notes, it doesn't technically sweeten, but rather gives the impression of being sweet. Because of its muting qualities i personally rarely use it, but it has it's place for sure.

INW cactus at .5-1% has worked well for me to reduce harshness and add to a wet mouthfeel.

I would like to note that some may be super sensitive to Cactus. I use it at .25 - .5% and it's fine but at 1% it causes harshness to me.

I can't use it at all. Even at 1 drop per 15 ml it jumps out as a soap taste to me.

Huh. I just got some and mixed up a 5% batch, and I don't get soap or harshness, but I get an aftertaste of... Sock, maybe?

Some fruits contain ingredients that give that harsh feeling. There have been a few posts on this. Key Lime and peach are definite offenders here

Linanol? Lilanol? I have no clue how you spell it but I believe it's this flavour violate that tend to mess with people

Lanolin?

Edit: it's not this. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with sheep or wool. Fuck me.

Linalool is what you're looking for. It's in TFA Juicy Peach and others.

Do you have an idea what they use it for? Or does it give a specific flavor? Or more an enhancer?

It's just one of hundreds flavour violates that mixed with other create flavour. I can identify few different violates but I'm not soo deep indo diy to be able to tell you what individual violates r responsible for. Try /r/deeper_diy

INW Peach isn't that harsh. At least mixed with creamy goodness it's not.

FLV Peach - the juiciest.

Have you all had issues with some peaches and not others? I never thought about replacement being a good way around the harshness. What gave you issues and what cured them as a replacement?

I read that Marshmallow in low percentages softens harsh flavours like tfa Juicy peach. I have added 1% to a couple of peach mixes to see how it goes.

I started using marshmallow because some creams and custards are just too much for me. I like the fullness it gives and the fact that is isn't too sweet or cheesy.

I have a few different marshmallows... I might try it with my peaches... problem is I also want to minimize he flavor changes as best as possible but all ideas are worth trying out!

I think it's the same as using cotton candy, low percentages add sweetness but higher adds the cotton candy taste.

Oddly enough I've found mints and things of that nature to take the edge off of some harshness I get from fruits when used in certain instances

TFA Marshmallow. TFA Smooth. OR MTS Vape Wizard

Steeping is the best way for me to tone down harshness. Otherwise I will use marshmallow @1% or a sour @ 1% which it won't bring about that sourness you're thinking of at this %. I like cactus @ 1 drop per 10 mls and lately have been using Pyrue Stevia especially on citrus and it helps a ton.

I never realized this was a known thing. What about fa smooth? I may give the cream a shot later.

There really are alot of people out there surprisingly... I find that those out there who vape around 2ohm or higher don't get affected but when they go with more power and lower ohms it tends to start affecting them. I find peach is just fine with me at 2ohm but when sub ohm it is extrmely harsh at higher levels. The problem is most juices are now aimed for the lower ohm vapors..

That's something I'd never considered. I love fruit flavors, they're pretty much all I use. But when I started diy-ing I noticed a bit more throat discomfort. And I exclusively build around .6 and 70 or 80 watts. Is peach the only one that gives you issue?

by xsirxxabout 9 years ago

No there are alot of fruits that do. I have always used the cream method and use the fruits at lower quantity. I picked up a bunch of new fruits and am looking at ways to use the. But traditionally I've stayed with creams, alcohols, and spices.

Edit:. To add that after quite a few hits, the harshness tends to numb out for lack of a better word.

FA MTS.

Does this generally work for you? Side effects? Good effects?

by CoccoBill_fiabout 9 years ago

It's good for smoothing out rough edges of flavors and adding mouthfeel, it won't affect throat hit though. It will also slightly mute the flavors so use sparingly. 0.25-0.5%.

Yeah, I am really struggling with Coconut. I've been using less (1%), but then I lose the flavor that I'm looking for.

I add about 7 drops per 15ml of TFA Smooth. I've heard it can mute flavors, but I haven't noticed it much. Last batch I made, I did it without smooth and it was very harsh. Added in the smooth and the harshness is almost 100% gone.

I've seen some people mention steeping but it's especially the case with me, since I vape 11mg primarily. My juices are usually a bit more harsh at first regardless of the flavors I use. Secondly though a bit of EM when it comes to citrus is a great addition and I've definitely had some success with using the marshmallow as well. FLV's new marshmallow is great I'm loving my results with it. For me, cream fresh is another one that will (in some cases) offset a harsh mix without adding much excessive cream/dairy/cheese/egg flavor. Just sweet sweet milky goodness ;-)
