FA Custard [Flavor Review]
submitted about 9 years ago by wh1skeyk1ngDiketones, Schmiketones

Setup: Plume Veil RDA; dual parallel @ .40Ω; cotton wicks; 50W

Testing: FA Custard @ 4%; Aged: 19 days

Flavor description: Sweet, thick, and creamy authentic home made custard taste with notes of raw vanilla and possibly cloves. Sort of like pudding, but much thicker. Slightly eggy, but more of an "egg white" nuance without the yolks, which if you've ever had egg whites, they are a delicacy by themselves.

Off-flavors: Some people report citrus or lemon. I personally do not taste that.

Throat hit: 4/10

Uses: Definitely a valuable additive in a cream base to promote thickness and mouth feel.

Pairings: Various creams, graham cracker, cookies, and citrus fruits. I can also see some caramels working well with it. Would probably work well with other fruits as well.

Notes: Probably the most authentic custard I have tried, as I cannot describe in words how truly authentic it is. I feel it would make a decent standalone flavoring as there seems to be quite a bit of depth associated with it.

I get a fairly strong lemon taste after about a week. It pretty much turned my unicorn milk clone into strawberry lemon. Still good. Fantastic flavor.

I taste a bit of lemon in it. Not the sharp, in-your-face sort of lemon, but a soft and mellow note. Not even closely related to Capella's Vanilla Custards in regards to substitution. Goes amazingly well with FA Strawberry.

Just wanted to say reviews like these are gold I always give an upvote when someone posts a good review. Good job, keep it up.

Btw is there some list of flavors that have been reviewed on this sub? I'm thinking of starting to contribute and it would be good if I could make sure I don't pick flavors that have been done a gazillion times already.

I definitely get a bit of lemon zest in there, but I agree that it's truly an authentic custard

Definitely has that lemon zest -- not so much the juicy meat of a lemon, but the zingy, brightness of the peel... just a tad.

There's definitely lemon in this. It's not your typical American eggy custard, it's an European one. Works great with fruits, not so much if you're looking for a rich dense American-style custard.

Nice creamy lemon taste, lacks body (in my opinion), so does well with some FA Marshmallow (~1%) added. Can be quite harsh on its own, a similar deal to FA Vienna Cream, but in a mix it's all gravy. The custard taste comes out really well when vaping whilst having a cup of tea. Good flavour.

Got to say thanks for the notes to all who take the time to detail the flavors and what they think blends well with them. This has taken my mixing to another level.

Huge amount of citrus in this one, I'm honestly surprised that you couldn't taste it. Even after a 4 week steep it's there. On the upside, it's a great flavour to use for boosting creams in any tropical/citrus recipes, like a Lemon Curd or Mango Lassi.

I ordered "Custard Pi" from Flavour Art UK. Is this the same flavour?

Custard Pi is a slightly different custard flavour, heavier on the citrus notes.

like everyone else said, there's def a lemon twang to this flavor. I like this for adding body to a pie that has a high note that can mask the lemon note in the flavor. working the right way, it can bring the custard body to a pie like coconut cream pie or banana cream pie, but it's not a good teammate to a straight custard mix. I feel that Vienna cream is more of a traditional custard flavor IF you're only playing with FA, but even that has a strong high note.

TL;DR good if working with a brighter fruit, or if working with a lower percentage. adds a slight heavy custard with a citrus twang.

Hmm. The lemon note comments I'm reading is what's making me a little hesitant to try this (other than FA flavors for me in general are on the dry side). Doesn't jive in my head thinking of a custard but I guess it depends on how pronounced it is. But hey what the hell do I know, I don't like the mm clones with dragon fruit, cinnamon sugar cookie, and orange in them either. They tasted like grandma spent too much time tweaking and just fucked them up. Guess I fall more into the American custard tastes.

I have been very happy with FA Custard but as said it is completely different than Capella's versions.
